7 Ringo the Gringo  Fri, Mar 2, 2007 7:33:48am

Are they entered in the EuroWeenie song contest?

8 Peacekeeper  Fri, Mar 2, 2007 7:34:27am

They're real, they made the video to mock Islamic misogyny and they've since gone into hiding. I linked a story on them a couple of weeks ago. Not that you noticed. Hmmpf!

9 zombie  Fri, Mar 2, 2007 7:34:47am

The announcer says "Afghanische Frauen," so they're claiming to be Afghan women -- but the move like German guys.

I suspect a parody!

10 Earth2moonbat  Fri, Mar 2, 2007 7:35:04am

Actually, I see great commercial potential in anonymous rock. They can send a dozen crews on the road at the same time, and nobody knows the difference.

#1 zombie,

Serious -- or parody?

I think it's serious parody.

I'm 2/3rds through this, and the chick on the guitar needs to learn another chord.

14 Chicken Kiev  Fri, Mar 2, 2007 7:38:52am

My opinion: It's men, it's a joke, and real footage of Kabul was intercut with performance footage filmed in a free country such as Italy or Greece. Dancing/music etc. were illegal in Afghanistan during the Taliban days, for men and women alike. Moreover the English lyrics fairly shout "Joke!" to me.

15 Sharmuta  Fri, Mar 2, 2007 7:39:08am

Musically, very interesting. Lyrically, I think it's satire.

Nargiz started the Burka Band when she met a German music producer in Kabul in late 2002. The producer was teaching Afghans to play modern music, and Nargiz learned to play the drums. One day she wondered why all the burkas in Kabul were blue, and together with two friends she wrote the song "Burka Blue" which is about burkas and the way you feel when you wear them. The song was recorded in Kabul with help from the German producers. The band would rehearse behind locked doors, so nobody would find out that the women were playing music. The burka also helped hide who the bandmembers really were.

- Of course it was a joke to sing in the burkas, but it was also necessary to wear them. If people in Afghanistan knew who the members of the Burka Band were, we could be attacked or killed because there are still a lot of religious fanatics here, says Nargiz, who hasn't told any of her friends that she has played in the Burka Band.

In 2003 the German record label Ata Tak released the song in Germany and the song became a hit in German clubs after it had been remixed by a german DJ. The Burka Band even performed at a big concert in Köln during a trip to Germany . Unfortunately, Nargiz couldn't join the band in Köln because she had to work, but she followed all the hype from her home in Kabul .

21 Ed Mahmoud abu al Qahool Martyr Brigades  Fri, Mar 2, 2007 7:41:03am

Re my #13

Perhaps it is hard to play anything but that in a burkha.

22 vxbush  Fri, Mar 2, 2007 7:42:34am

But shouldn't each "girl be wearing a different color of burka? You know, we should have six of them, each wearing a burka in a rainbow color (red, orange, yellow, green, blue, turquoise, purple).

Then, they can sing "We are the world....Or we want to be."

23 American Soldier  Fri, Mar 2, 2007 7:42:49am

34 Irene NYC  Fri, Mar 2, 2007 7:50:10am

Why're so many lizards down on this group? Seems to me they did a terrific job taking the p*ss out of a lot of things that we agree about. And the lines about kissing and that may be your uncle, I mean, come on, brill. Give 'em some credit. They have an extremely hard life. Good on them for defying the worst social prohibitions and making fun of them at the same time. And, of course, let's not forget that it wasn't an easy or safe thing for them to do.

35 wildcat_clan  Fri, Mar 2, 2007 7:51:08am

The fabric seems light but still...seems it would dampen the strings. She could play some harmonics, maybe crank out some Red Barchetta or something. That being said, let's hope the Dixie Chicks see this and like the look. If fate is kind they already have their denim, rhinestone-studded burkies on order.

#5 Earthtomoonbat.

Its trivial to play guitar through a burka if your song consists of only one chord.

Its also quite possible to play a whole set of music through a burka if your guitar is tuned to an open chord tuning.

I've heard of some group whose guitar player (as a goof) used to play a song wearing an oven mitt on his fretting hand and picking the strings with a piece of dried swiss cheese.

Who's behind the Blue Burka Band?...
Burka Blue

Latest band excursion for the ever accessible Monika label. Some sensation on the internet around this band, who perform all their gigs clad in full Burka costume, but you have to question the frankly awful vocal and lyrical elements. Morgenstern provides a typically chirpy remix but even she's fighting a losing battle. To co-opt Sofia Coppola, something is seriously lost in translation here.

Da Jooooooooos!

This is a spoof. Nobody can play a guitar through a burka.

I actually knew a guy who managed to play with a towel over his left hand, presumably to keep rival players from stealing his chops. I think he's in rehab now. I'm not making this up.

48 Sharmuta  Fri, Mar 2, 2007 7:59:39am

One vocalist, one bass player, one drummer- but I hear a lot more going on musically than 2 instruments and a vocalist can explain. It's too musically complex. The song is simplistic yet engineered.

I think this song/video is fake but accurate.

And, of course, you've never seen ANY lip syncing, musical playing pantomime (or whatever it would be called) etc. in American rock/pop videos and taped performances either, right?

It's a spoof like Andy Kauffman or Borat. The background story of the women rehearsing behind closed door in Taliban controled Afghanistan is fiction, the singer's accent in German (not Pashtun) and that's a man playing the drums.
It's very funny social commentary.

Please consider reading "Veiled Courage" by Cheryl Benard, about real Blue Burka'd women's exploits under the Taliban. Of course, at more than one level it's a spoof. And, of course, the music being heard is not the music being "performed." That's obvious.

I don't care about any of that. There is a serious parody going on here and everyone's p*ssing on the performers instead. That is what I don't get.
