Washington Post Slams Pelosi - A "Shadow Presidency"

Not even the Washington Post will defend House Speaker Nancy Pelosi’s disgraceful trip to Syria, or her ludicrous statements about Syria’s readiness for “peace:” Pratfall in Damascus.

“We came in friendship, hope, and determined that the road to Damascus is a road to peace,” Ms. Pelosi grandly declared.

Never mind that that statement is ludicrous: As any diplomat with knowledge of the region could have told Ms. Pelosi, Mr. Assad is a corrupt thug whose overriding priority at the moment is not peace with Israel but heading off U.N. charges that he orchestrated the murder of former Lebanese prime minister Rafiq al-Hariri. The really striking development here is the attempt by a Democratic congressional leader to substitute her own foreign policy for that of a sitting Republican president. Two weeks ago Ms. Pelosi rammed legislation through the House of Representatives that would strip Mr. Bush of his authority as commander in chief to manage troop movements in Iraq. Now she is attempting to introduce a new Middle East policy that directly conflicts with that of the president. We have found much to criticize in Mr. Bush’s military strategy and regional diplomacy. But Ms. Pelosi’s attempt to establish a shadow presidency is not only counterproductive, it is foolish.

If you’re a Democrat, you know you’ve made a mistake when the Washington Post won’t cover for you. (Idiots like this, of course, will blindly defend anything the Democrats do.)

By the way, the Washington Post was not the first to make this “shadow presidency” accusation: The Democrats’ Shadow Government.

Of course, when I did it, I was immediately attacked by lefty blogs.

For once, the Washington Post has called it right on the money. Pelosi's message to the Syrians, and to the world, is that they now have an alternative source of foreign policy to work with -- or better still, a preview of what they can expect if they just start funneling oil money into the Democratic Party coffers and wait another eighteen months.

In my more paranoid moments, I've wondered if the whole business with the British sailors might have been a mise-en-scene engineered from the start not so much to make Blair look stupid as to help make Pelosi look like a heroine to the fatheaded voters back home.

Ms. Pelosi's attempt to establish a shadow presidency is NOT simply counterproductive or foolish - it is TREASON. It is a deliberate attempt by Ms. Pelosi and her supporters to assume for themselves powers given solely to the President of the United States by the Constitution of the United States.

Ms. Pelosi - indeed the entire Congress of the United States - has NO authority to strip the President of his Constitutionally defined role as Commander in Chief, unless they would care to initiate a Constitutional Amendment.

The Constitution of the United States of America dictates that the President alone has the authority to conduct diplomacy on behalf of the United States of America. The only role allowed to Congress or any member of Congress is to either reject or approve any treaty the President may choose to make.

Ms. Pelosi's actions are not simply foolish. Her actions are an attempted coup, an attempted takeover of the legitimate government and authority of the United States of America.

Ms. Pelosi should be immediately discharged from office and prosecuted for both treason and violation of the Logan Act.

Flying pig moment yesterday when the local CBS owned AM station's afternoon guy.....Democrat of course.....featured the Pelosi issue on his show. He said she was wrong and I was impressed. 1. She would have to wear a burka

3. If she refuses, Bush just says "She's acting like the ambassador, so I make her the ambassador. And then she says she doesn't want to be the ambassador. Just pick one, that's all I ask!"
4. If she takes the job, she'll make some mistake large or small in the first week. Fire her. Now she's out of the House and can't run again until 2008.

Bush's complaint that Pelosi and the bipartisan congressional delegation were sending "mixed signals" made it appear that Bush either resents or refuses to accept the Constitution's unambiguous granting of extensive powers in foreign policy to the legislative branch. Pelosi and her colleagues were doing what innumerable delegations of senators and representatives have done in the past: traveling abroad to consult with foreign leaders, gather information, and enhance their ability to fulfill their obligations to advise, consent, and appropriate funds. Republican congressmen met with Assad last week. If the American system of checks and balances is to function properly, the co-equal legislative branch must exercise its powers to check and balance the actions of the executive branch.

When it comes to Bush's approach to the Assad regime in Syria, there is a particularly glaring need for Congress to explore the road not taken. There is no doubting the nastiness of the Assad dictatorship, but the Bush policy for Syria has been an unconcealable failure. For too long, Bush has acted as though he could compel Assad to change his trouble-making ways by isolating Syria and by refusing to engage in direct discussions about Iraq, Lebanon, Iran, or the Israeli-Palestinian conflict.

The Iraq Study Group headed by former Democratic congressman Lee Hamilton and former secretary of state James Baker recommended, as a potential means for stabilizing Iraq, that the administration engage in dialogue with both Iran and Syria. Baker, who obtained the cooperation of Bashar's father, Hafez Assad, in the 1991 war to chase Saddam Hussein out of Kuwait, observed after the release of the group's report last December that talking with adversaries is not appeasement. This summarizes the tough-minded statecraft that Baker and the first President Bush practiced when waging the first Gulf war, managing the bloodless demise of the Soviet Union, and achieving the unification of East and West Germany.

This week in Damascus, Pelosi and her colleagues were following Baker's advice. And despite Bush's petulant assertion that "photo opportunities and/or meetings with President Assad lead the Assad government to believe they're part of the international community," US diplomats attended an Iraq security conference alongside Syrian and Iranian envoys last month in Baghdad. And Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is scheduled to participate in a meeting this month in Turkey with her Iranian and Syrian counterparts. Bush may not want to admit it, but he too has begun tip toeing in the direction of Baker's traditional deal-making statecraft.

As you might guess, it's like being trapped in a time-warp, with no lessons being learned from history as we move along. No real passion about life on the macro level or what is truly meaningful, above the daily pleasures of beer and casual sex. I listen to the generally friendly and insular locals, who are often deeply prejudiced against capitalism, the US, Israel, and so forth and I do feel a degree of pity. They have no idea what's coming and they've been infantilized by decades of soft socialism.

Heh, but other than that I have no idea because I am writing this thing on Leibniz's logic all the time, in my chambers ;)

I don't know if you caught on You Tube Evan Sayet's speech on liberals and their principle of non-discrimination, but he covers on a basic level one of the key parts of the worldview around here. For the left, 'Every value system that has been discriminating in the sense of saying certain values are better has resulted in war, extremism, and hatred. Therefore the enemy are these traditionalists in the West that claim 'truth' and 'goodness' and try to be discriminating on that basis and we must tear them down everychance we get.' It's John Lennon's Imagine -- "nothing to kill or die for." Israel (and now America and people like R.R.) represents the antithesis to nihilism and is the root of the idea of distinction between good and evil.

A surprisingly mature and realistic assessment from WaPo--I would have expected them to close ranks behind Pelosi.

The comments made interesting reading--especially the one Pelosi defender who said the real problem was "Jew duplicity". These people insist that conservatism equates to racism--they call Republicans "Republikkkans"--and yet utter blatantly anti-Semitic remarks that would sound completely correct coming out of the mouth of an Aryan in a brown shirt and an armband.

But one of the comments was priceless: it said Pelosi suffers from "delusions of adequacy".

I saw him on a sports show which had a list of the 10 events that transcended sports - and he mentioned Jesse Owens "sticking it to Adolf Hitler" - as if Hitler when he conquered France said to himself "Geez I can't enjoy this because I am still thinking about Jesse Owens winning all those medals 4 years ago!" At this point, Congress is over-reaching itself. It does not have the power to set up it's own foreign policy, and it does not have power over military matters once it gives the CIC a declaration of war. It can choke the purse strings, but leaving ones troops in the lurch is a good way to get fired fast. And as to citing polls....only one poll matters. The Electoral Poll. Everything else is just static

Oh course, if we want to give congress this kinda of power, We need merely look to Britain or Canada for an example of how well that's worked out.

Yep. Paraliment. Seems we had a war over that sometime in the past to get out from under that.

The French looking, joke botching, Junior Senator from Mass. who by the way served in vietnam, also visited Syria on his shadow presidency tour of the middle east recently.

What is it with those that wish to harm this President (much less this Country) always visiting Syria as a stick in the eye? Do they really think that the majority of the country wants us to negotiate with Syria?

I live in the San Francisco Bay Area, and I've had to listen all morning to coworkers justifying this woman and her b.s. It's pretty frightening. I understand that they don't like Bush, his administration or his policies, but these folks seem to think that they have the right and the moral authority to preempt a sitting President's policies simply because they exist and they disagree. I have never in my life heard (what I thought were) intelligent, sophisticated people advocate for a coup d'etat as I have today. What have we come to in this nation?
