LGF Poll: Should Olmert Resign?

Tue, May 1, 2007 at 3:02:28 pm PDT

In a big improvement, the LGF poll application now uses Ajax (Javascript and PHP) techniques to let you vote and see the results without reloading the page.

The ‘Show’ button will still take you to a separate page, where you can view and vote on any LGF polls that are currently open. But now if you select a poll option and click the ‘Vote’ button, your vote is entered into our database and the screen is updated with the results automagically, in the background. Instant feedback, less bandwidth.

To launch the Ajax polling system on its maiden voyage, here’s another simple question:

Sorry to go OT so early --

Reporting on the President's just-completed veto of Congress's dead-on-arrival troop-failure bill, we see Miss Neutrality herself, the AP's word-connotation queen Jennifer Loven, gets the write-up.

Check out how she and her co-author frame the brief article, at the beginning and especially the end.

Florida Man files lawsuit to try and halt mosque construction - CAIR Seething

The lawsuit claims the leader of the mosque, Imam Hassan Sabri, has repeatedly been associated with others who are tied to terrorist groups including Hamas, al-Qaida and the Palestinian Islamic Jihad,... "I'm very much disturbed that in this day and age you'd find people going to such extreme measures to prevent a house of worship from being built in any American city," said Altaf Ali, executive director of the South Florida chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, which is also named as a defendant in the lawsuit. "I look at this as an act of religious intimidation." ... The mosque is radical, the imam is radical," Klayman said. "We believe they will go out and recruit people in the African-American community to do their bidding." Besides the lawsuit's bold terrorism claims, it makes more routine complaints, including that prayer meetings could cause substantial traffic and taxpayers will be forced to foot the bill for increased infrastructure and police protection ...

I know you are just testing code, but better less predictable polls would be nice.

I would enjoy polls limited to registered users as well as general polls.

Polls that users can generate and insert into comments.

Also, demographic polls of LGF readers would be interesting.

Education, Age, Income, etc.

Should Olmert resign? Absolutely. Yet, he's showing the same indecision over his political future as he showed when dealing with Hizbullah.

He just can't make a decision of import about anything. One has to wonder how he gets dressed in the morning based on his lackluster performance.

32 sarah  Tue, May 1, 2007 3:20:02pm

Well dang it all, I missed President Bush.

And well...I can't say about the poll. It's cool that it is on this site. I like that.

33 Golem Akbar  Tue, May 1, 2007 3:20:49pm

Olmert should serve as a warning not only to Israelis, but to Americans. Finish the frickin' thing. Defeat your enemy. If they honorably surrender, talk to them. But don't give anything away because you are trying to prove how wonderful you are or that they can't be trusted with a treaty. If you can't trust them, then they must be defeated. Otherwise, they'll be back.

Olmert should symbolize what can go wrong when a stronger force listens to unwise advice. There are obvious parallels to the democrats' (defeat-otarians) Iraq Bill that Pres. Bush just vetoed.

If Olmert goes, Israel's Basic Law governs what happens next. The government continues until a new government forms. Olmert would remain in charge until a new government takes place - elections could be called, or the various parties are directed to form a new government by the President of Israel.

In either case, expect Hizbullah or Fatah or Hamas to exploit the uncertainty.

What the heck is wrong in Washington, where it is only the liberal pols that get to speak trash and lies

Bush always says that trash-talk is just politics, but if you listen to other pro-Bush pundits, there's plenty of in-your-face-mud. I agree, however, that Bush just doesn't exude enough righteous indignation. But that's him.

He says:
1. Olmert made the right decision to go to war with the Hezbos, based on the knowledge he had.
2. However, his military didn't fully apprise him that it was not ready for such a war.
3. Olmert appointed the Winograd Commission and since the Commission is so critical of him, Olmert must resign.

Recall the millions who died during the "Year without a Summer"

A similar volcanic eruption in Indonesia, besides the immediate end of the carbon footprint of millions of Indonesians due to burns, suffocation and tsunami, the following years, even decade of abnormally cool weather, would further help save the Earth due to the famine and starvation that follow, removing tens, evens of hundreds of millions of more people who have carbon footprints

1 - 10 percent will almost always answer in the alternative in any poll no matter how one sided the question. (To a point)

Those same people will flock to 'I dont know' or 'I dont care' if offered and your percentage will move there.

For example: Should cows be eliminated?

89 percent no
7 percent yes
4 percent dont know

I can almost guarantee you with 500+ people responding you get close to those results.

73 Carl in Jerusalem  Tue, May 1, 2007 3:49:28pm

WHY?

94 Kenneth  Tue, May 1, 2007 4:55:44pm

Olmert should not resign. If he did, Israel would be stuck with somebody else from his misruling coalition of apeasemeniks. Better he should call an election and the lot of them be turfed out by the voters. But, of course, that would take decisive courage on Olmert's part, and we know he doen't have that. So alas, he will resign and the PM's job will go to Livni. That is not a good thing.

Is there any way the Israeli Knesset can bring down the gov't and force an election?

# 94 Kenneth

Yes, but it's very difficult.

96 Perplexed  Tue, May 1, 2007 5:03:04pm

Carl in Jerusalem, dropping the leader of a country could result in a much worse individual being placed into office. Olmert is a known quantity. If he isn't stupid (as in incapable of learning) then he should be able to learn from his mistakes and change his behavior. He's got lots of good people under him. If you got a 'roll back the borders and give them what they want' pacifist instead, then Israel would be in some very deep troubles, more so than they are today.

thanks for the answer. Sadly, I don't know that Israel has the luxury of time. Many observers beleive another war is coming soon, as early as this month or next, by summer at the latest. I don't see Olmert performing any better next time, do you? Nor Livni or anybody else in Kadima...

Haaretz poll: 40% want elections, 68% say Olmert should resign

A poll taken Tuesday, 24 hours after the release of the Winograd report, shows that 40 percent of those asked favor elections, especially on the right wing.

The poll found that between 10 and 17 percent of respondents prefer that the current Knesset - only 14 months old - continue in office, and that the government be changed and headed by Likud leader Benjamin Netanyahu, Vice Premier Shimon Peres or Foreign Minister Tzipi Livni. Nine percent support the existing government in the poll, conducted by Haaretz-Dialog and directed by Professor Camil Fuchs of Tel Aviv University's statistics department.

The results concerning Prime Minister Ehud Olmert are particularly interesting: Sixty-eight percent want him to resign, an almost identical percentage that appeared in previous polls on this question. In this sense, the major shock of the Winograd report has not left its mark on the people.

Those who believed six months ago that Olmert should resign still think so. In the current poll, 23 percent want him to stay to "fix the defects."

Regarding Defense Minister Amir Peretz, 85 percent want him to resign and only 9 percent want him to remain in office. Peretz's situation is desperate among voters in his own Labor Party as well: 81 percent want him out. In contrast, Olmert has a relatively low percentage of opponents in his Kadima Party - 58 percent want him to resign.

Knesset seats

In the regular poll Haaretz-Dialog conducts every two months on the number of seats each party would receive if elections were held now, Kadima actually gained two seats over the 12 the previous poll gave it. Likud continues to lead, with 30 seats, and Labor has 21, with no real change for the rest of the parties.

Because the feeling in the Knesset is that Olmert will not hold his present post for long, the poll sought to check who the public believes is the most worthy candidate to replace him. On a scale of 1 to 10, those polled placed Netanyahu in the lead with 5.27, although he is the only right-wing leader presented, while respondents on the left had four candidates to choose from.

Tzipi Livni is second at 5.03, Peres has a rating of 4.91, Labor's Ami Ayalon 4.29, and Labor's Ehud Barak 3.91. However, Barak cannot become prime minister during the current Knesset's term because he is not an MK.

Respondents were also asked to choose a candidate they would like to see as prime minister. Here too, Netanyahu led with 26 percent, followed by Peres at 11 percent, Livni at 10 percent and Barak and Olmert at 6 percent each. Ayalon trailed with 5 percent.

Another interesting item: Yisrael Beiteinu voters divided their preference among Netanyahu, who took the lead, as well as Avigdor Lieberman and Arcadi Gaydamak, who received 3-percent support. The candidate by the name of "other" took in 18 percent.

When asked whom they preferred as defense minister, support for Ayalon was greater than for Barak - 50 percent to 34 percent. Among Labor voters, support for the two was almost equally divided.

The word I hear is that Israelis are getting tired of giving up land for...what? If there is a Vegas line on this thing, It'd probably show Bibi in the lead, and Labor candidates running for dogcatcher.

111 Golem Akbar  Tue, May 1, 2007 6:16:45pm

One more comment: Iran. Israel is getting threatened almost daily by Iran, and Olmert is seen as a windbag when it comes to defense.

Voting that you don't believe Olmert should resign doesn't necessarily mean that you support him.

For example, I would much rather see him voted out of office than resign.

(Though I would much rather see him resign than continue to be PM).

Nice use of AJAX!

114 EE  Tue, May 1, 2007 7:14:36pm

Olmert is unable to provide competent leadership for Israel, so he needs to get out of office. Resigning would be the most honorable thing for him to do. Who would replace him is another matter, but first he should step aside.

Whether Olmert likes it or not, Israel is involved in a continuous state of either active war, or a pause in which Israel's enemies prepare for war against Israel. That includes Hizballah, Hamas, Fatah Aqsa Martyrs Brigades, Syria, and especially Iran.

Olmert's statement before the kidnapping of Israeli soldiers that Israel is tired of war was something that inspired Israel's foes to take action against Israel. If Israel is tired of war, then isn't that the perfect time to strike at Israel? Olmert doesn't understand that the statements that he makes to try to impress the international community and to vainly seek to get their support are also statements that earn contempt and belligerence from Israel's enemies.

If Olmert wants to do something to help Israel, the most important thing he can do would be to step aside. Resign, Olmert. You have already done enough damage.

115 mythicknight  Tue, May 1, 2007 7:34:31pm

Yes, but only because for the most part he really hasn't been that good.

Sure, he has his moments, but come on. Time for another person to take the reigns...hopefully someone more like Sharon.

116 John Tiller  Tue, May 1, 2007 7:37:23pm

Ehud Olmert is about to make the kind of peace deal that only people with 0% approval ratings can deliver, complete and total surrender. Bush and Rice will treat the news like Olmert was not a zero but a hero. Then we will see who favors our old friends and who likes the new reality, dealing with brutal dictators, better. We have to stop this drifting and stand for something that we can be proud of.

117 sadatoni  Tue, May 1, 2007 8:23:42pm

Looks like his cabinet is starting to quit:

A member of Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert's cabinet has resigned in protest against Israel's handling of its 2006 war against Lebanon.

So you think that Olmert has not hurt Israel enough, so we need another Sharon. Funny.
No matter how bad is Olmert, he is thousand times better than Sharon, who ignored Hizb'allah for 6 years, but trained IDF to deport Jews, both dead and alive, who put all brainless officers and corupted ministers in power, including Olmert, and who brought Hamas to power, not that Fatah is much better.

Too much luxury for him. Move him to Sderot!

"OK, who voted to keep Olmert? You got some 'splainin' to do."

I did, and if you must know, it's because I don't think this is the time for national leaders to be stepping down from their elected positions...extraordinary circumstances notwithstanding. That's just my opinion though.

Other than that, I have great respect for Israel and the Israeli people, and this is an issue for them to render judgement on, not me.

123 j_mon  Tue, May 1, 2007 11:40:14pm

Love the new poll feature! More polls please!

Oh, and I voted YES. He is very bad for Israel... At the same time, Israel needs a real leader, and it's not clear if that leader exists yet. (America too needs a real leader... Grrgh! Where is he?!?!)

124 green helmet guy  Tue, May 1, 2007 11:51:43pm

WE got a big problem though.

I Am no fan of Olmert ALL-MERDE, but who will replace him?

livni?! shes worse!(not that I want ALL-MERDE TO STAY!) she would love to turn over Israel to the arabs and replace rifles with flowers.

Netanyahu, no one trusts anymore because he talks the talk but doesn't walk the walk.

All the honest politicians end up on the outside (e.x. Natan Sharansky, Uzi Landau etc..)

Avigdor Liberman is an oppertunist who would also gladly do anything (including Land swaps) to advance him self.

No one is perfect But where is a leader that will stand up to the Islamofascists?

because land for "peace" didn't work. Evacuations for "peace" didn't work either. and I don't expect the Leftard's National suicide for "peace" will work either. (the terrorists would much rather do it themselves and recieve "paradise"

how about security for peace.

Agreed. That said, Olmert should move to Fwance.

Yea, ALL-MERDE could join one of his two self-hating, draft dodging sons already living in France (the other son is in New York). and while he's at it he can take his traitorous daughter and moonbat wife with him.

126 AW  Wed, May 2, 2007 12:17:09am

Yes, he should resign.

An extremely unpopular and weak Olmert might be much better than a government headed by Livni or Peres, but Olmert's resignation will trigger early elections after which Kadima will probably fall apart completely.

I did, and if you have a problem with that, then tough shit.

128 VonStierlitz  Wed, May 2, 2007 12:40:06am

Shalom from Haifa, everybody!

Olmert is a total moron.
I don't want him just to resign. It would be too simple. Instead he should take a pistol and shoot himself in the ass, where his microscopic brain is located. Stupid dhimmi asshat.

129 ismail  Wed, May 2, 2007 2:21:53am

i think olmet has a bit of the dreaded leftist-lib-mad syndrome, isreal need bibi hey thats just my opinion.

130 Clio  Wed, May 2, 2007 2:31:15am

This is not a simple YES or NO question.

Should Olmert cease to be PM? Absolutely, positively, immediately. BUT HE MUST NOT GO ALONE.

If he resigns and the Kadimite government stays in power, than another Kadimite will become PM -- and that would be either the moronic Tzippi Livni or the evil Shimon Peres. (The loutish Meir Shitreet has announced his readiness to say "Yes" but so far no one has proposed to him.)

If Olmert resigns but Kadima remains in power, the Sharon/Olmert follies will go on. And the same clique will be in charge when the next war starts.

So it is not enough to force Olmert out without bringing down the entire Kadima government. What is holding this up, is the reluctance of the Shas and Yisrael Beitanu parties to quit the coalition and leave Kadima without a majority in the Knesset.

The seem to be hanging back for fear that in an election the voters will punish them for having been in the coalition in the first place. But they longer they prop up the Kadimite government, the more they will lose when an election does come.

Since the politicians will not take the necessary action the people have to do it -- with mass demonstrations, protests, and strikes until the Kadimite government can no longer pretend to function.

This could work better and faster with Olmert still in that with Olmert out.

So my vote -- improbably as it may seem -- is NO -- Olmert should not resign [yet].

131 alkmyst  Wed, May 2, 2007 2:50:51am

I'm tempted at first to vote YES - most definitely (Hey Charles - anything in that AJAX Bag o' Tricks for adding comments to polls?)

But on further thought - VoldOlmert should not have the option of resigning with -ahem- dignity. Cough, cough.

He should be run out of town on rails, tarred, feathered, and be whipped and beaten by every single person that
A) was beaten in Sde Boaz and Amona
B) That lost someone due to his incompetence in Lebanon

and then everyone that went along with him should lose any and all rights to ever serve in any public office again.

Hey, the Knesset barred Ariel Sharon from ever being Defense Minister, yet somehow overlooked the ability to give orders to the Defense Minister... there needs to be a stop - once and for all, from incompetent, corrupt thugs from ever being in charge of anything more serious than their own house, because most of them can't even keep that in order.

132 Nannette  Wed, May 2, 2007 3:01:51am

Of course Olmert should resign.

He was the accidental prime minister, and wasn't actually elected. Israel went to the polls thinking that Ariel Sharon would get better.

Kadima should all resign. They're the most corrupt, money-grabbing "government" Israel has ever had. They're whoring themselves to the highest bidders.

To top it all, they've been jailing and intimidating anyone, especially Jews, protesting their dictatorship, and let Arabs, like the former MK Bishara, get away with speaking to the enemy states on how to best destroy Israel! Kadima suck up to enemies and traitors, and yet jail the patriots.

Talk about scum of the earth...

133 AW  Wed, May 2, 2007 4:09:36am

#130 Clio

True. The only thing better for us on the right than Olmert resigning right now is if he stays on and drags Kadima into the ground with him.

It's unbelievable that he had the balls to do it. That he favors Hizballah over Israel is much less surprising.
