Wed, May 16, 2007 at 6:08:41 pm PDT

A reader who followed PrisonPlanet.com’s link to our thread about Ron Paul supporters spamming our poll emailed the following poetic effort, using the obviously fake email address “madwhitemoron@moronsrus.com” and the subject line “to whome it should concern”:

why do you people lie so much since your full of it
like stepping in the daisies and find you stepped on
the tail of a snake
who forgot he should be in grass
and became food
for the wolf who
saw it was foolish and stupid just like
you people the foist garbage when its yourself
who smells from your on seat of pants cause you forgot to go to mama to
get your diapers changed
now you wear it on your head a bragging buffon
with no sanity to
your madnes keep
it up and it will bite you where it hurts the most
a major coward who lies when it
comes to truth and what is right
may god have pity
on your pathitic soul who will end up in hell!!

We have a goodly number of gas storage fields in the US. We pump them full of gas during the summer when demand is low, and then empty them out during the winter when demand is highest. They are usually old, depleted gas fields in carbonate or clastic formations. I've worked a couple of those projects.

We don't store it above ground in big metal tanks, ya know.

These were underground, where they'd used pressurized water to leach out the salt in the past. Looked like big hollow Coke bottles below ground, and they claimed the permeability would allow pressurized storage, but I suspect the old sites might be under things like school buildings and such, not that they'd endanger the people in the People's Paradise :-)

Gas storage fields all have the problem of undetected leaks. Columbia Gas Systems built one in Ohio back in the 70s, and did their diligent best to find and securely plug every hole in it. We blew one house off the ground when we pressured up, due to an old, improperly plugged and undocumented well beneath it. Fortunately, nobody was home at the time. Feces occur.

True story...

I once had a poem published.

I worked all night on a freaky buzz of 64 oz. of Coca Cola and a two-pound bag of peanut M&Ms - my cramming method. It's trademarked, but go ahead and use it.

I came up with five poems in which I'd reached back deep into my trials and tribulations. I employed the techniques of Dylan Thomas, Jack Kerouac and my favorite poet - a real man's poet - Robert Frost.

Tweaking from my lack of sleep fighting through the fading buzz of chocolate and soda, I dashed off one last two-bit piece of dreck.

Dolphins will jump...
... completely out of the ocean.

That's the one they published.

OT but outrageous

Internet game of Virginia massacre sparks outrage

SYDNEY (AFP) - An Australian man has sparked a storm of protest after creating an online computer game based on the murderous shooting spree at Virginia Tech in the United States last month.
Players control an image of Korean-born gunman Cho Seung-hui, who killed 32 people before turning a gun on himself, and screams can be heard on the soundtrack as shots are fired at the other characters.

The creator of "V-Tech Rampage", 21-year-old Ryan Lambourn, said he made the game "because it's funny," the Sydney Morning Herald reported Thursday.

The unemployed Lambourn responded to outraged calls for him to remove the game from the Internet by demanding 1,000 US dollars for each of the two sites it is on and said that for another 1,000 dollars he would apologise.

But he said later that was a joke to "make more people angry" and he would not remove the game from his own website or seek to have it removed from amateur game sharing site Newgrounds.com.

The game, described as offering "three levels of stealth and murder" is set on a facsimile of the Virginia Tech campus and can be freely downloaded from either site.

"I've done offensive things before but they're not usually this popular," he said.

Lambourn said that while he had sympathy for those who had lost friends and relatives in the massacre, he also had sympathy for the gunman.

"No one listens to you unless you've got something sensational to do. And that's why I feel sympathy for Cho Seung-Hui. He had to go that far."

Lambourn told the national AAP news agency that he would not take down the game under any circumstances, even if he received a request from the victims' families.

"I'm afraid not," he said, but added: "I hope they'd never do that."

He said he empathised with the killer and that he, like Cho, had been a victim of abuse and bullying at high school.

Lambourn was born in Australia but grew up in the United States before returning to Australia when he was 14.

He said he left school in the eighth grade having been bullied and abused at several institutions in Texas, Maine, New Jersey, New York and North Carolina.

He described himself as a self-taught animator supported financially by his mother, who still lives in the United States.

Everything wrong in the world today
Is the fault of the USA,
(Unless you include the evil Jew
Which almost everyone seems to do.)

They vilify the land of the free
Exalt their own stupidity
And claiming that it is God’s will
They kill and kill and kill and kill.

They kill themselves, they kill their brother
To prove their faith they kill each other
And when the cameras roll they say:
“ It’s all the fault of the USA.”

Here is what Ron Paul said..

“I’m suggesting that we listen to the people who attacked us and the reason they did it,” Paul said. “They don’t come here to attack us because we’re rich and we’re free. They come and they attack us because we’re over there.”

Of course he's blaming America for 9/11. That puts him in the center between all the nut jobs on the extreme right and the extreme left. He'd be a perfect speaker at a KKK/Worker's Party Rally.

Now, the poll spammers are in all likelihood bored lefties who want to cheese off Republicans by pimping for an idiot GOP candidate. (Kinda like how all the Republicans in Michigan got Geoffrey Fieger nominated to run for Governor as the Democrat nominee a few years back). And further, most of the real far right nutjobs would never vote in an online poll. They're too paranoid that Big Brother and the NSA will rat them out and put them on the shit list for supporting Paul.

RoundUp® is safe around critters. But it will kill EVERYTHING with a leaf, so don't use it on the lawn. Use Weed-B-Gone or something similar to kill dandelions in the lawn.

Whoever said there is no such thing as a weed never met Convolvulus arvensis, aka bindweed. That stuff will envelope and smother anything within days, and it's tough as nails. The root system can go down as far as thirty feet, and it lives through the winter.

It's hard to spray for it because you usually can't hit it without hitting the plant it's strangling, too. It is the bane of my existence.

Glyphosate is currently registered as a general use pesticide because of its low toxicity.

True Detroit story.

My aunt lived in Detroit on a relatively quiet street. One winter morning, she looked out of her window and saw a man laying down in the middle of the street. She calls EMS since she's female and doesn't want to go out and check out a male body laying in the street.

As she continues to watch the body from her window, a car approaches. She's scared the body will be hit.

The car slows down. The car stops. Someone gets out of the car and goes over to the body.

They move the body to the side of the street, get back in the car and drive off. EMS never arrives. The guy eventually gets up, vomits in my aunt's bushes and stumbles down the road.

True story.

Here's what the global warming crowd really should be worried about instead:

The need for a huge new supply of electricity over the next 50–100 years is blindingly obvious. The alternatives are either a drastic collapse of living standards in the developed world—and no doubt elsewhere as well—or a radical reduction in the number of humans on this Earth. Probably both.

Last year the academic quarterly Daedalus published an article by Daniel Nocera of MIT in which he laid out a credible and alarming vision of this world’s future energy demands. He pointed out that in 2002 the whole world “burned energy at a rate of 13.3 TW [terawatts]” and he calculated that “if 9 billion people adopt the current standard of living for a US resident… the world would need an astronomical 102 TW of energy in 2050.” He also pointed out that “If everyone adopts Equatorial Guinea’s current living standards, we will need 30.4 TW by 2050.”

A decrease in absolute and relative pituitary weights were observed in mid- and high-dose male dogs.

I'd like to buy that man a scotch.

Actually, I'd like to go on a bender with Christopher Hitchens. I think that'd be cool... newspapers all over the place, five ashtrays full of cig butts, a well-worn path from the whisky bottle sliding back and forth between us, piles of empty pizza boxes...

What a jackball! This guy needs to realize that the source of his paranoia is that he's smoking too much pot. In fact, I'd venture a guess that most of the folks who hold Alex Jones as an oracle need to put down the spliff and read a book or two. Or at least read about the Mufti of Jerusalem and the links between Islamic terror and Nazi terror. Not to paint all pot smokers as misguided paranoids, but I'm just sayin'

Christopher Hitchens is a complicated man.

Think so? I've actually read his stuff where I would read it and agree with his viewpoint but that was sometime back.

But this will surprise some: I actually find him quite shallow and calloused. He's got a superficial sophistication but I don't find him near as deep as most do.

FOR IMMEDIATE RELEASE

CAIR LAUNCHES OKLAHOMA CHAPTER WITH SOLD-OUT BANQUET

(OKLAHOMA CITY, OK, 5/16/07) - The Washington-based Council on American-Islamic Relations (CAIR) recently launched an Oklahoma chapter (CAIR-OK) with a sold-out fundraising dinner in Norman, Okla. CAIR-OK joins 32 other CAIR chapters and offices throughout the United States and Canada.

Attendees at CAIR-OK's May 12th banquet, themed "American Muslims: Connecting & Sharing," included representatives from the FBI, local and state government officials and interfaith leaders.

In his keynote address to the gathering, CAIR National Board Chair Dr. Parvez Ahmed said: "I urge that you stand for the cause of justice, for Islam stands for justice. . .for the cause of peace, for Islam is peace, and. . .for the cause of mutual understanding, for Islam advocates cooperation and harmony between people of all faiths."

I'm not going to rescind my vote because of some lame haiku, if that's what you're asking.

Given the 'only using the tools they provided' meme we've gotten from Charles with regards to Digg, I'm still wondering why Charles would feel the need to remove Paul from the online poll he created. No one was 'cheating'. There was a poll, and people voted (once). End of story.

Like I said, now that he's removed, we'll never know how many votes for Paul were 'legit' (if you want to think of it that way).

‘Islamophobia Worst Form of Terrorism’

ISLAMABAD, 17 May 2007 — Foreign ministers of the Organization of the Islamic Conference (OIC) yesterday expressed grave concern at the rising tide of discrimination and intolerance against Muslims, especially in Europe and North America. “It is something that has assumed xenophobic proportions,” they said in unison.

Speaking at a special brainstorming session on the sidelines of the 34th Islamic Conference of Foreign Ministers (ICFM), the foreign ministers termed Islamophobia the worst form of terrorism and called for practical steps to counter it.

The ministers described Islamophobia as a deliberate defamation of Islam and discrimination and intolerance against Muslims. “This campaign of calumny against Muslims resulted in the publication of the blasphemous cartoons depicting Prophet Muhammad (peace be upon him) in a Danish newspaper and the issuance of the inflammatory statement by Pope Benedict XVI,” they said. During a speech in Germany last year, the Pope quoted a 14th Century Christian emperor who said the Prophet had brought the world only “evil and inhuman” things. The Pope’s remarks aroused the anger of the whole Islamic world.

You just can't make this stuff up.

Would you feel safe using this chemical:

Major Hazards:

Corrosive to the skin and eyes; vapor or mist is very irritating and can be destructive to the eyes, mucous membranes, and respiratory system; ingestion causes internal irritation and severe injury.

Toxicity:

The acute toxicity of (chemical) is low. The immediate toxic effects of (chemical) are due to its corrosive action and dehydration of tissues with which it comes in contact. A 10% aqueous solution of (chemical) produced mild or no irritation on guinea pig skin.

At 25 to 50%, generally severe irritation results. In the eye, a 4 to 10% solution will produce immediate pain and sometimes injury to the cornea. (Chemical) solutions of 80% or greater concentration can cause serious burns of the skin and eyes.

(Chemical) is slightly toxic by inhalation; exposure to 50 ppm is extremely irritating to the eyes, nose, and throat.

(Chemical) has not been found to be carcinogenic or to show reproductive or developmental toxicity in humans.

Flammability and Explosibility:

(Chemical) is a combustible substance (NFPA rating = 2). Heating can release vapors that can be ignited. Vapors or gases may travel considerable distances to ignition source

Toxic, but low toxicity. Not a caricinogen, but corrosive. Combustible. So not terrible, but some concerns.

I'd use it. Especially to dye Easter eggs.

This is vinegar. ;-)

I'll consider myself the historian on the matter.

Some time back, Charles had a haiku thread. As you might expect, most of us are very bad at haiku. However, DesertSage cracked everybody up by ending his haiku with "Burma Shave." It was one of those notable "LGF Moments."

Given the theme of the night, the thread quickly turned into a haiku session by Karmic Inquisitor at #16. DesertSage, showing his profinity of the comedic mechanism - the callback, suggested that tonight's poet laureat should have ended his work with "Burma Shave."

I have "casually mentioned" some poll or another at a certain web site on occasion here. Within minutes the results begin to change. There are more than a few jokesters here that intuitively know what is required. Would you give that poll any validity the next day when it was completely flipped?

I'm not sure it's safe to assume that these polls have any validity to begin with.

I've heard of that trick but haven't tried it yet.

If you have a latino neighborhood in your city (or, I imagine, italian, spanish or portugese), you can pick the stuff up in bulk for only pennies more than you'd buy at the grocery store.

The seeds won't grow peppers, but if they do - you've got peppers (chiles), too.

Hey, dewde; here's what kewl poetry looks like...;~)

The Tempest

A man was sitting upon a chair
In a red rut shotgun shed
Chin on palm and a thousand mile stare
Hearing voices inside his head.
"TRY and ignore us!" the voices cried
As the thunderheads mushroomed dark and wide
"We will not be bottled here up inside."
As the cannon boomed o'erhead.

"We know your soul's triumphs and despairs"
As the wind-whipped rafters moaned
"And the depths of the good and the evil there"
As foundations creaked and groaned.
"We know all the things that you've never tried"
As dark torrents drenched the world outside
"And the dreams from which your hopes have dried
And where lost years have blown."

"You know we know and you know we care"
As the lightning fell all aground
"Because we're you!" And though thunder blared
The little man heard not a sound.
And though blast and brilliance raged through the blind
O'ershadowed they were by his raging mind
As his thoughts of things lost, and left behind
Spun him wond'ring round and round.

Okay, real poetry, now. Two of my favorites.

A Dream Within a Dream

Take this kiss upon the brow!
And, in parting from you now,
Thus much let me avow
You are not wrong, who deem
That my days have been a dream;
Yet if hope has flown away
In a night, or in a day,
In a vision, or in none,
Is it therefore the less gone?
All that we see or seem
Is but a dream within a dream.

I stand amid the roar
Of a surf-tormented shore,
And I hold within my hand
Grains of the golden sand
How few! yet how they creep
Through my fingers to the deep,
While I weep - while I weep!
O God! can I not grasp
Them with a tighter clasp?
O God! can I not save
One from the pitiless wave?
Is all that we see or seem
But a dream within a dream?

411 Noam Sayin'  Wed, May 16, 2007 8:41:31pm

And Robert Frost, the real man's poet.

Two roads diverged in a yellow wood,
And sorry I could not travel both
And be one traveler, long I stood
And looked down one as far as I could
To where it bent in the undergrowth.

Then took the other, as just as fair,
And having perhaps the better claim,
Because it was grassy and wanted wear;
Though as for that the passing there
Had worn them really about the same.

And both that morning equally lay
In leaves no step had trodden black.
Oh, I kept the first for another day!
Yet knowing how way leads on to way,
I doubted if I should ever come back.

I shall be telling this with a sigh
Somewhere ages and ages hence:
Two roads diverged in a wood, and I--
I took the one less traveled by,
And that has made all the difference.

Hamas had a friendly fire incident and killed five of the their own people.

There have been about 40 people killed in the last few days. That's 2880 virgins. Allah's going to have to permit cloning virgins just to keep up to the demand.

Better poem, and for today:

Turning and turning in the widening gyre
The falcon cannot hear the falconer;
Things fall apart, the center cannot hold;
Mere anarchy is loosed upon the world,
The blood-dimmed tide is loosed, and everywhere
The ceremony of innocence is drowned;
The best lack all conviction, while the worst
Are full of passionate intensity

Since the Paulist ranter's poem didn't rhyme, I thought I'd put up another non-rhymer, for comparison:

The Soothsmith's Song

I shall blast the bellows of hours past
Smelting ores of pain and joy, belief and desire
Of both baser and rarer mettle
And work to craft my Hammersongs.
Clarity is a kiln-pane, to be seen through, not seen.
The white-hot moments when shapes are beaten
Illumine by their intensity;
The subtly wrought point stings like serpents' truth.
And I shall be the soothsmith
And forge facsimile lives
And drive my spikes deep
That, cleaving to contrary hooves
They may yet hold fast my intentions.

Mine is not the alchemist's Art.
I do not blend, but bind and blend
A weighty matter with clumsy tools.
Quicksilver flees the casting pour
Forsaking pig slag, should the solve lack fervour.
Then should one rather render anew
Than palm dross arcs riven at a glance.
Still the pure issue must be fashioned.
A handcramp of anvilling follows
With heat and hammer precisely applied
And clear eye and caring ear
Seeking clean line and true ring.
Neglect is measured in a stricken gait:
The misshapen shoe curses its maker
