-RetweetAP Flying Pig Watch

Thu, May 31, 2007 at 1:52:20 pm PDT

The flying pig is out of the hangar for this one, not because Iraqis in west Baghdad are demanding an end to the Al Qaeda thugs, but because of the Associated Press’s headline: Iraq residents rise up against al-Qaida.

I did a classic double-take when I first read it. What the ... hey! It’s an anti-Al Qaeda intifada! And AP reported it! Good wire service. Here’s a treat.

BAGHDAD - A battle raged Thursday in west Baghdad after residents rose up against al-Qaida and called for U.S. military help to end random gunfire that forced people to huddle indoors and threats that kept students from final exams, a member of the district council said. ...

U.S. forces backed by helicopter gunships clashed with suspected al-Qaida gunmen in western Baghdad’s primarily Sunni Muslim Amariyah neighborhood in an engagement that lasted several hours, said the district councilman, who would not allow use of his name for fear of al-Qaida retribution.

Casualty figures were not immediately available and there was not immediate word from the U.S. military on the engagement. But the councilman said the al-Qaida leader in the Amariyah district, known as Haji Hameed, was killed and 45 other fighters were detained.

Members of al-Qaida, who consider the district part of their so-called Islamic State of Iraq, were preventing students from attending final exams, shooting randomly and forcing residents to stay in their homes, the councilman said.

UPDATE at 5/31/07 2:22:51 pm:

Iraq the Model says the AP got this one wrong; and that’s even more flying pig-worthy, because normally, all their errors are of the anti-US variety.

Stories like this give me hope that things might turn out okay in Iraq. Does anybody really think that the Iraqis want to live under AQ?

Read stuff like Michael Yon's latest post, and you'll see that they don't:

Over time, AQI provided ample demonstrations of their ruthless and reckless abuses of power over civilians, shooting people for using the Internet, or watching television, or other “moral transgressions” such as smoking in public. AQI’s claim of fundamentalist piety proved to be a thin veneer that was quickly eroded by blatant drug, alcohol and prostitute use. The people of Anbar rejected AQI, but AQI was still strong and well-armed, so rejection was only a first step.

Inevitably, al-Qaeda types wear out their welcome wherever they go. They roll in and take more than full advantage of local traditions regarding treatment of guests. After milking their hosts as hard as they can, they start acting like they own the place. The locals have all they can stands, and they can't stands no more.

Also, they are pretty attuned to which way the wind blows and know that there is always a time to roll the welcome mat back up. Plus, they start to see that the quickest way to get the occupiers to leave might be to get rid of the baddest interlopers among them.

Funny how AQ's expel-the-meddlesome-outsiders thing comes back around to bite them.

OT, just something very noteworthy from the Telephone Apartheid thread on DKos: comment by "dijelo":

Thank You (7+ / 0-)

for again verifying the real goal of anti-"Zionists":

Former South African President Hendrick Verwoerd already understood in 1961 that, "Israel, like South Africa, is an apartheid regime." -Rand Daily Mail, Nov. 23, 1961.

In 1961, Israel did not occupy the West Bank or Gaza.

That means that if the Israelis were to vacate all of the West Bank and Gaza, in your view it would STILL be an apartheid state.

And, of course, all apartheid states must be eradicated, right?

It is important that enemies of Israel never be muzzled or shouted down. The more you express yourselves the clearer your true intentions become.

I don't recognize anything, regarding islam anyway, about "martyrdom".

Any and every islamofascist who is planning on killing Americans, as al-Sadr is and has done, needs to be killed, now, period.

The islamoc version of "martyrdom", is a straight ticket to Hell.

If anyone kills and American, they need to be taken out, collateral damage included.

Oh, I understand completely, the relationship with the islamofascists and the left.

Hillary, Kerry, Algore, Murtha, Pelosi, Edwards, et al, are all on the side of the islamofascist human butchers.

It would give them absolute power in America, until all of their backs were up against a wall, blindfolded, and then...

The left in America, are willing, just to gain absolute power for a brief moment, to sell all Americans out.

Rioters asked for their story

snip

A group of academics are examining the violence which exploded in Oldham in May 2001 and linking with a French team examining the recent Paris race riots.

snip

Dr David Waddington, of Sheffield Hallam University, said gathering first hand accounts of the riots was essential to the project.

Dr Waddington, said: "In recent years, there has been a growing concern in society about the situation of young people in various ethnic minority communities in both sides of the Channel.

"By sharing our knowledge, the British experience can provide valuable information to the French and we can use their experiences to test and enhance our own theories and policy."

snip

Gangs of disgruntled Asian and white men took to the streets and hundreds of riot officers with dogs were drafted into the town.

By the way I think St. Pancake asked once if there was a book that really got the flavor of the people, and I think I found two great ones:

The Innocents Abroad, Mark Twain (1867)

and

The Pilgrimage to al-Mekkah and al-Madinah, Sir Richard F. Burton (1855, 3rd revised edition 1860s)

The latter is better, though more tediously written. But reading the Burton and then the Twain, two independent voices by men who cannot reasonably be called bigots, confirms what every lizard knows to be true. Which may not be necessary, but it's gratifying.

Not yet. Iraq deserves one last chance. But to make that chance even remotely viable, we'll have to take desperate measures. We need to fight. And accept the consequences.

The first thing we need to do is to kill Muqtada al-Sadr, who's now a greater threat to our strategic goals than Osama bin Laden.

We should've killed him in 2003, when he first embarked upon his murder campaign. But our leaders were afraid of provoking riots.

Back then, the tumult might've lasted a week. Now we'll face a serious uprising. So be it. When you put off paying war's price, you pay compound interest in blood.

We must kill - not capture - Muqtada, then kill every gunman who comes out in the streets to avenge him.

Our policy of all-carrots-no-sticks has failed miserably. We delivered Iraq to zealots, gangsters and terrorists. Now our only hope is to prove that we mean business - that the era of peace, love and wasting American lives is over.

And after we've killed Muqtada and destroyed his Mahdi Army, we need to go after the Sunni insurgents. If we can't leave a democracy behind, we should at least leave the corpses of our enemies.

For you and those who search my posts.

I was born in the US Navy. My father was an LTJG, my mother an Ensign when they met at the Line School in Newport, RI. They married. I was the result, in 1950.

I grew up in the Navy. There was this little thing called the Korean War. My father did not see me when I was two. He was elsewhere. People today complain about 6-month deployments. In those days, as in WW2 (Father was at Pearl Harbor) deployments had no announced end.

As a boy, growing up mostly in Navy surroundings, I always assumed I would serve in the military. That was what my family did. I have an ancestor who served in the American Revolution, another in the Confederate Army. I like to say that there have been two revolutions in this country: my family has been on the revolutionary side in both of them. We're batting 500.

I had a student deferment during the Vietnam War. For reasons too complicated to explain, I wanted to drop out of college and join the Army. Unfortunately, I'm very nearsighted and you couldn't then die for your country if you couldn't read the big E on the eye chart. Since I was trying to get a position as a computer programmer with ASA, that struck
me then and now as rather silly.

Maybe you can understand my attitude.

But there is still a 'smog situation'...? Better doesn't mean fixed...

Does 'fixed' mean no smog whatsoever? If so, that will never happen as long as we're using fossil fuel.
But there is a huge improvement over 20, 30, even 40 years ago.

True... and I understand your point... I now live in a city that when I last visited, 25 years ago, my teachers told me not to wear anything light colored because of the pollution... Yes, it is much better now, but there are still areas where improvements can be made...

12/6/06 Baker report: Israel must withdraw from Golan

5/31/07:
Olmert: Israel Willing to Give up Golan for Peace with Syria

By Amihai Zippor

(IHC News, 31 May 2007)

Israeli Prime Minister Ehud Olmert acknowledged he is willing to give up the entire Golan Heights, captured from Syria in 1967, for a peace deal.

However, the price Israel will pay will depend on the level of relations Syria is willing to provide.

"The price is clear. There may be a debate on the payment terms, discounts etc. but the main question is what Israel would receive in return. Will it receive peace like [the one it has] with Egypt, peace like Britain and France have, or a deception: Give us the Golan, and all you'll get is an alliance between Syria and Iran and Hamas headquarters in Damascus," the Israeli daily Haaretz quoted Olmert as saying on Thursday, 31 May 2007.

"My duty as Prime Minister is to examine [the negotiations option] even if intelligence evaluations say it's a deception and even when Western and other leaders warn me," he was reported to have said in recent closed meetings on the issue.

Since last summer, Syrian President Bashar Assad has threatened Israel that if it did not restart peace talks on withdrawing from the Golan, Syria would begin an armed campaign to retake it.
