Weird Meta-Fatwa Apology of the Day

Mon, Jun 4, 2007 at 5:34:20 pm PDT

Egypt’s top mufti, Ali Gomaa, who issued a fatwa stating that drinking the urine of Mohammed was a blessed act, in response to another mufti’s fatwa about adult breastfeeding as a way of overcoming the ban against contact with females, has now apologized.

Egyptian Mufti Dr. Ali Gum’a has apologized for a fatwa he issued stating that the companions of the Prophet Muhammad blessed themselves by drinking his urine.

During a discussion by the Academy for Islamic Research at Al-Azhar on the fatwa, Gum’a promised that he would remove from the market all copies of the book containing the fatwa.

UPDATE at 6/4/07 5:57:41 pm:

The Prophet Urine Mufti is currently meeting with British Prime Minister Tony Blair at a two-day conference on Islam hosted by Cambridge University: Blair launches fund to improve teaching of Islam.

Tony Blair today launched a passionate defence of Islam as a religion of “moderation and modernity”, as he announced a £1m government fund to aid teaching of the religion and train UK imams.

"...blessed themselves by drinking his urine."

They shouldn't have done it, you shouldn't have brought it up, but now that you did, it is VERY APPROPRIATE to CONTRAST this with the purity, moderation and rationality so prevalent in the Faith of God, brought by Baha'u'llah and lived in practice by Baha'is worldwide!

10 Arashi  Mon, Jun 4, 2007 5:39:13pm

Okay, was it ACTUAL urine they were talking about, or a symbolic sort of thing, like Christianity and Communion with the "blood" (wine) and the "body" (bread)?

...if it was actual urine, indeed, how the heck did it last that long? LOL.

If Ali Gomaa's wikipedia page can be believed, he seems quite the liberal. It's a good bet no one in Egypt takes him seriously:

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

Since taking office Gomaa has issued a number of fatwas and statements that have made an impact in the media. He has issued a fatwa asserting that men and women enjoy equal political rights in Islam, including the right to become president of a modern state. [5]

He recently stated on national television that it is permissible in Islam for a woman to have hymen restoration surgery for any reason since Islam promotes protecting one’s privacy and reputation and does not require a woman to provide proof of her virginity. [6]

He has also stated that Islam does not call for and has never known a theocratic state and that there is no contradiction between Islam and liberal democracy saying, “I consider myself a liberal and a Muslim, but this does not mean I am a secularist. The Egyptian [historical] experience has combined liberalism and Islam in the best of ways.” [7]

He is a signatory of the Amman Message, which gives a broad foundation for defining Muslim orthodoxy, unequivocally states that nobody has the right to excommunicate a Muslim, and restricts the issuing of fatwas to those with the scholarly qualifications to do so. [8]

Gomaa has taken a very clear stance against extremist interpretations of Islam. “He has become the most explicitly anti-extremist cleric in mainstream Sunni Islam.” [9] He says that the use of violence to spread Islam is prohibited and extremists have not been educated in genuine centers of Islamic learning, “Terrorists are criminals, not Muslim activists.” [10]

Although some media outlets have portrayed Gomaa as an anti-Semite, he has publicly asserted that The Protocols of the Elders of Zion is a forgery and made an official court complaint concerning a publisher who falsely put his name on an introduction to its Arabic translation. [11]

Peter,

A former Laotian military general and a former California National Guard officer were among nine people charged Monday with plotting a violent overthrow of Laos' communist government.

The group was raising money to recruit a mercenary force and buy enough weapons to equip a small army, including anti-tank missiles and grenade launchers, prosecutors said.

If they're plotting this on our soil, then we have jurisdiction.

What I find disturbing is this:

He said thousands of co-conspirators remain at large.

Recall it was partly due to criticism of Al Azhar University that got Kareem Amer in trouble.
Gloria Steinem writes to Hosni Mubarak; requests Kareem’s release

President Hosni Mubarak
c/o Embassy of the Arab Republic of Egypt
3521 International Court, NW
Washington DC 20008

May 7, 2007

Dear President Hosni Mubarak:

I have visited Egypt, worked with its women leaders, and come to believe in the sense of justice and compassion that resides in its people.

Therefore, I would like to bring an unjust and perhaps accidental decision by one judge to the level of your attention.

It is the conviction, sentencing to four years, and incarceration of Abdelkareem Nabil Soliman, a law student at Al-Azhar University, for writing his own opinions in his personal web log. For this only, with no accusation of any illegal or even challenged physical act, a judge in Alexandria convicted, sentenced and jailed Mr. Soliman.

I believe, as do many in Egypt and around the world, that a mistake has been made. Like so many others, I am concerned about the well-being of this young man, who has been held mostly in solitary confinement since November.

I appeal to you especially because his crime was writing that allegedly “insulted religions” and “defamed the President of Egypt.” Mr. Soliman wrote about what he had experienced as a lack of freedom on the campus of Al-Azhar and in Egyptian society. Yet I cannot imagine that you or the authority of your office would be threatened by the writings of a young blogger. In fact, his sentencing by the judge is far more damaging testimony to a lack of freedom than anything he wrote.

All courts make mistakes. In my country as well as in yours, one of the duties and pleasures of a chief of state is rectifying those mistakes. Therefore, I hope you will consider pardoning Mr. Soliman.

I thank you for your consideration. This letter is not one of criticism, but of faith that a mistake will be rectified.

Sincerely,
Gloria Steinem

Four executed in Pakistani tribal region for alleged illicit relations (AP via IHT)

PESHAWAR, Pakistan: Tribesmen shot four people to death in a public execution in northwestern Pakistan Monday, after a council of elders found them guilty of adultery, an official said.

Residents seized the three men and a woman at a house in Alam Gudar, a villager in the Khyber tribal region near the Afghan border on Monday morning, said Purdil Khan, a local government official.

The four confessed under questioning by a hastily convened jirga, or council, of tribal elders, who sentenced them to death, Khan said.

Tribesmen shot them in the street in front of a large crowd of residents, Khan said.

Haji Jan Gul, a local elder, confirmed that the four were executed "according to tribal tradition."

"Tribal tradition", don't be fooled, this is Sharia, plain and simple...

Tony Blair today launched a passionate defence of Islam as a religion of “moderation and modernity”, as he announced a £1m government fund to aid teaching of the religion and train UK imams.

Things are sure being set up for the big finale.

Here we have a world leader, or should I say former world leader, who is out in the world, talking about the cult of ideology, which will wage the final war aginst Israel, which has very publicly stated many times its intentions, and Tony Blair calls them "a religion of moderation and modernity,".

This is the world group, along with everyone else in the world who hates Israel, which is, by Scriptural guarentee, going to wage the final war against Israel, and the leaders of the free world, are deceived beyond comprehension.

Everyone needs to enjoy their lives to the fullest, because this world, is about to take a turn, that mankind has never even imagined, and it is not a turn for the better.

Islam is so crazy that when Mo told his followers to drink his piss, they obeyed him. You just can't make this stuff up.....

I hear ya!

Just wait, though, until you watch what is coming.

Whatever you do, under no circumstances, do you become deceieved.

Things are going to get insane beyond comprehension, and the proof in that, is they already are.

What the hell happened to Tony Blair? He's been unravelling like the sleeve of a cheap sweater.

Part of it, obviously, is what ahmadinajihad told him, over the 15 British sailors who were held captive by Iran.

It's like he took a left turn, on a dime,

Keep watching, it only gets worse.

Wait until you see the Americans who fall for this deception.

I just saw that, kinda creepy....

I figure the candidates understand that the bat-sheeple that blundered into the auditorium don't constitute a meningful political measure. Edwards had to be happy that his lines shot up whenever he tossed his head, though.

I see Edwards numbers are gutter-bound, though.

What the hell happened to Tony Blair? He's been unravelling like the sleeve of a cheap sweater.

I have a hunch, this is part of the deal that Tony Blair made with ahmadinajihad, to get his 15 sailors back, unharmed.

You can't make deals with the Devil, that work out in the end, as many will find out.

I highly suggest these "concerned" muslims take a good, hard look at where this "image" stems from.

The lefties have been gunning for Vang Pao ever since he escaped Laos and gained asylum here.

It seems anti-western muslim immigrants & pro-aztlan reconquistas are ok with the left but Southeast Asian anti-communists are not.

It's like Blair and Bush believe that if they say nice things about Islam, it will magically become so.

I can't decide if it's pure delusion, pure arrogance, or a mixture of the two.

Neither man is stupid enough to really believe that Islam is a religion of moderation, modernity, or peace, right?

Why do you find a bunch of anti-communist buddhists disturbing? Even if these allegations are true, why would thye be a threat to US citizens? They want to liberate their homeland from communism, not carry out Jihad against American civilians, unlike some other groups we all know well.

Sorry to butt in...

I think it has to do with "thinking the unthinkable". Bush, Blair and the rest of the leadership of the West simply cannot allow themselves to face the truth. Then they would be obligated to do something about the enemies in their midst. None of the choices would be pretty, or clean, or humane... but they would be necessary. So they lie to themselves. They lie to their people. They suppress the truth. They surround themselves with apologists and follow their advice.

Blair and Bush, by now actually believe their own lies... they believe they can usher in a new dawn of peaceful co-existence and understanding.

It all is due to willful ignorance... the strongest type of lie in the world.

Who is trying to convince? The Muslims? This is a loony as Bush's ROP when every damn Muslim on the planet scream their hatred of America and act like moronic ghetto gangs.

124 funky chicken  Mon, Jun 4, 2007 7:38:57pm

122 stevieray I have to agree with you, that was really well done.

I came to post this quote from a blog/opinion site I found and really like:

It would appear to this observer, who entered the US military during the Kennedy presidency and has been a student of US politics and warfare ever since, that our politicians and the American society they represent are incapable of correctly identifying our enemies. But of course by “incapable” I don’t mean they lack the physical ability to see what is clear before their eyes. What is meant by this assessment is an existential shortcoming or mindset that refuses to identify the enemy as such because that would require wholesale discrimination between “US” and “them”.

A conscious refusal to discriminate between us and our enemies boils down to a political and societal cowardice. I will leave to others to argue the reason why cowardice has become such a driving force in American political and social life but one conclusion is demonstrable. When cowardice costs US lives, it is an impeachable offense.

Sorry, I don't quite have a handle on he "left" and "right" sides in England. I think they are a little different than here? What I meant by "left" above is the anti-war crowd and I'm pretty sure Blair was taking significant abuse from them. Same as Bush has been from the shitty Congress. I'm not defending them, by the way. As I said, they've become weak and foolish.

126 funky chicken  Mon, Jun 4, 2007 7:43:42pm

stevieray...I think the arguement also applies to Bush's idiotic illegal immigration beliefs.

I read an interesting comment by a liberal Bush critic who said that conservatives shouldn't be at all surprised by the recent nasty crap Bush has spewed about people who want border enforcement because Bush has behaved that way toward critics from day one.

It made me think back to the Harriett Miers debacle and how Bush came out and said everybody who opposed her SCOTUS nomination was a sexist. It was yet another obnoxious attack on the GOP base.

Did lots of folks just not see it for years because the targets of his ire were folks we didn't like?

Of course he never has said a single word to/about Ted Kennedy like he's said about conservative critics lately.

I'd sign that petition for cluster bombs. That was pro-bombing right. I know this will offend some, but being a country boy, when we had to get the rats out of the barn, you got rid of all of them - mommy and baby rats too. If you don't make war extraordinarily and unbearably painful to the other side, they have no reason to quit. Many wars are ended by one side having the choice of surrender or extinction. In dealing with a cult that demands the subjugation of all other religions or their death, I would chose extinction, I just hope that it is not us. But soon, whom will fight for us, we are not the U.S.A. any longer: little Mexico here, Havana there, China elsewher and then there is Detroit. If you throw to many veggies in the pot, it takes much longer to get a stew - our government has gone nuts and it may be to late to save it.

"moderate Muslim' not so moderate when it comes to ratting on Jihadists:

Sheik Shami, who is also an Australian Federal Police chaplain, said he had not notified authorities about Muslims interested in jihad because he did not want to betray the trust of people making the inquiries.

"If you come to me and tell me about something, it's not nice for me to go and tell the authorities about you because you trust me and I have to just keep your secret," he said.

"I know I have enough faith in myself. I'm not going to hurt the person or hurt the authorities."

The federal Attorney-General's department last night said clerics were not obligated under common law to pass on national security information.

140 Mike_W  Mon, Jun 4, 2007 11:19:58pm

Tony Blair is a bloody menace.

What is it with our leaders these days?
Are they so busy shaking hands and making deals and various busy, busy, busying about, that they have no time to educate themselves about little things like, I dunno...maybe Islam.

Ignorance everywhere.

Sometimes I half believe that they know all about what's going on and are just trying to keep a lid on things for as long as possible to prepare for what's coming.
Then, I think of all the decisions made that exacerbate the problem, like increased Muslim immigration to the West.
The truth seems to be that Blair and Co. are either deliberately trying to destroy the West, or, they are just incredibly ignorant.

Tony Blair, bet a clue from one of your predecessors, for God's sake ;

Winston Churchill On Islam

A quote from an 1899 book by Winston Churchill, "The River War", in which he describes Muslims he apparently observed during Kitchener's campaign in the Sudan

-------------------------------------------------- ------------------------------

How dreadful are the curses which Mohammedanism lays on its votaries! Besides the fanatical frenzy, which is as dangerous in a man as hydrophobia in a dog, there is this fearful fatalistic apathy. The effects are apparent in many countries. Improvident habits, slovenly systems of agriculture, sluggish methods of commerce, and insecurity of property exist wherever the followers of the Prophet rule or live. A degraded sensualism deprives this life of its grace and refinement; the next of its dignity and sanctity. The fact that in Mohammedan law every woman must belong to some man as his absolute property - either as a child, a wife, or a concubine - must delay the final extinction of slavery until the faith of Islam has ceased to be a great power among men.

Individual Moslems may show splendid qualities. Thousands become the brave and loyal soldiers of the Queen; all know how to die; but the influence of the religion paralyses the social development of those who follow it. No stronger retrograde force exists in the world. Far from being moribund, Mohammedanism is a militant and proselytizing faith. It has already spread throughout Central Africa, raising fearless warriors at every step; and were it not that Christianity is sheltered in the strong arms of science - the science against which it had vainly struggled - the civilisation of modern Europe might fall, as fell the civilisation of ancient Rome.

Taking Islam for granted as an Empire that (unlike the Soviet Union and Nazi Germany) will last forever is a catastrophic mistake - shared by both Blair and Bush. It is unlikely the Muslim Empire can be reformed to the point that it is no longer a massive genocide machine bent on global conquest.

Ok, so what I'm wondering is why the mobs who went berserk over the danish cartoons haven't torn this mufti limb from limb for claiming that mohammed was a perv who was into watersports. That's a hell of a lot more insulting than anything that's been printed in a western newspaper.
