-RetweetPalestinians Want Israel to Let Them Import Weapons

Thu, Jun 7, 2007 at 8:18:05 am PDT

It’s almost unbelievable that this outrageous request would even be considered, after Israel has been burned again and again and again by the lying Fatah party, but that’s how insane the world has gotten: Palestinians want to import weapons.

JERUSALEM - Security forces loyal to moderate Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas have asked Israel’s permission to import anti-tank missiles, grenades and millions of bullets to fight the Islamic militant group Hamas, officials said Thursday. ...

Under interim peace accords, Israeli permission is necessary for military equipment to enter Palestinian territories, and Palestinian security officials said such a request by forces loyal to Abbas has been on the table for months.

Israeli security officials said Israel was discussing the issue with the U.S. security coordinator in the region, Lt. Gen. Keith Dayton. Officials on both sides spoke on condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss confidential military deliberations with the media.

A spokesman for Dayton said he had no comment. A senior Western diplomat said the U.S. “was playing no central role in this matter.” He spoke on condition of anonymity because he was not authorized to discuss U.S. involvement with the media.

Hamas, which shares power with Fatah in the Palestinians’ coalition government, was not immediately available for comment.

Israel has given permission for the import of weapons in the past, most recently in March after Palestinian officials made guarantees the weapons would not fall into Hamas’ hands and be used against Israeli targets. There is widespread opposition to this new request for the same reason.

Palestinian government requested that all Israelis go to the seashore and assume jumping position. The moderate Fatah gave explicit guarantee that they will not be pushed into the sea.

Disgusting. Just disgusting. The spineless Olmert government will sell their fellow countrymen as long as they keep their seats. What is their approval rating? Last time it was a whopping 3%. Probably Olmert's extended family still approves of him. Most of it anyway.

They would've been better off saying the anti tank missiles, grenades, and millions of bullets were to feed their starving people. It has worked for the last 40 years.

12 Just_A_Grunt  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 8:26:17am

Deal! With one provision. Israel must inspect each shipment to uh, er ensure they are functioning properly.

I posted this on my blog and it bears repeating. There's absolutely no reason for anyone to supply the Palestinians with weapons. None. Any weapons that have been supplied thus far have been used by terrorists, both against other Palestinians and against Israel. Whenever the Palestinians tire of their civil war, they'll go back to shooting at Israelis.

Arms embargo should be the only policy when it comes to the Palestinians.

After all, we don't want to be seen as taking sides in a Palestinian civil war, do we? That would be a quagmire...

Taliban handed commander's body

Afghans handed over the corpse of Mullah Dadullah (snort) three weeks after he was killed. I think this violates some sort of "bury before n sundowns" rule, and if so, good for the Afghans.

19 realwest  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 8:30:22am

WTF? This has gotta be Iowahawk's work. I mean how could Israel even begin to consider allowing importation of anti-tank weapons (when did Hamas acquire tanks, btw?) and millions of rounds of bullets.
Sheesh, you'd almost think Olmert was running Israel for the Pali's to even consider such a request!

20 Golem Akbar  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 8:32:03am

It's a good idea (sarc tags-o-plenty), but an even better idea, along the same lines, would be to skip the middle man (Abbas) and just supply the weapons directly to Hamas. Saves on shipping and handling.

Palestinian terrorists guaranteeing that the weapons wouldn't fall into the hands of other terrorists. Nice trick, especially considering that we've got several examples of terrorists ambushing convoys carrying those weapons and expropriating them for themselves.

23 MJ  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 8:33:15am

Olmert will OK it after the US State Department under Condi Rice and President Bush, who, at one time, used to a Republican President, tell Israel that they need to "help" the "moderate" Abbas.

Truce or no truce?...
Fatah activist killed in fresh Gaza clashes

A Palestinian security officer was killed on Thursday in the first deadly clashes between rival Fatah and Hamas gunmen to scar the Gaza Strip since a truce began nearly three weeks ago.

Another 17 Palestinians were wounded in the violence that erupted west of Rafah, in the southern part of the increasingly impoverished and radicalised Gaza Strip, before spreading downtown, medical sources and witnesses said.

The dead man was named as Wael Wahbeh, a security officer and activist in the secular Fatah movement headed by president Mahmud Abbas, which has been locked in periodic factional fighting with loyalists of Islamist rivals Hamas.

The clashes later subsided and both sides agreed with Egyptian mediators and the Islamic Jihad faction to pull armed men from the streets and open an inquiry into who was responsible for the infraction, security sources said.

27 Endangered in MASS  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 8:34:04am

"...made guarantees the weapons would not fall into Hamas’ hands and be used against Israeli targets."

Seems that all they are guaranteeing is that they won't fall into Hanas' hands while guaranteeing that they would be used against Israel.

28 Occasional Reader  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 8:34:06am

Then again, given that the AP has the Palis attempting to import "bullets" instead of ammo (and I don't think even the Palis are that dumb), who knows what the "anti-tank missiles" really are.

29 Iron Fist[deleted]  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 8:34:18am
30 Just_A_Grunt  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 8:34:31am

Guns and ammo can flow 2 ways. Iran can ship stuff to Hezbos through Syria and the Hamas can ship stuff to other groups through Egypt. It is all one big supply chain that would make UPS® envious, and all the materials of destruction are being supplied by the very people they have sworn to destroy.

31 finallyhere  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 8:34:44am

Now, that's chutzpah!

Of course Olmert will agree. Not only that, but Israel will pay for these weapons. First Barak gave as a gift natural gas near Gaza, that belonged to Israel even under Oslo, and now Olmert agreed to buy that gas woth billions going to Arab terrorists.

Arabs are dealing with mentally retarded Jews who agreed to self deportation and self ethnic cleansing, then put criminal Olmert in power after pogrom of Jews in Amona, and now keep him in power after the loss in Lebanon War that stripted Israel from deterrence.

So it is not chutzpah! Arab terrorists are very realistic and know who they are dealing with.

32 theheat  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 8:35:36am

Sure, why not? Israel has been picked at and attacked for years without utterly decimating its enemies, so there's no reason not to keep their enemies armed and maintain status quo. Stepping back, its almost become a Roadrunner/Coyote scenario, minus the humour.

33 Kenneth  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 8:35:52am

I hear Israel has developed a new tank which they're calling the Baker Plan in honor of James Baker. I believe the tank does exactly what you suggest-blows up in the face of the IDF soldier. The advantage from a political standpoint is that no one is ever forced to resign from the running the Israeli government.

Just to keep the perspective, if at any time since 1947 the Arabs had declared peace with Israel, and agreed to any of the land deals offered, they would have won. Since they've always turned down peace with Israel, they've lost. So far.

Good post.

Hamas does not have tanks, so the anti-tank weapons are not for use against Hamas. The purpose of the anti-tank weapons that the Fatah terrorists want is to copy what Hizballah did in repelling any Israeli incursion. They may be used directly by Fatah, or given to Hamas, or sold to Hamas, but the anti-tank weapons that they want are for fighting against Israel.

NATO officials say they have caught Iran red-handed, shipping heavy arms, C4 explosives and advanced roadside bombs to the Taliban for use against NATO forces, in what the officials say is a dramatic escalation of Iran's proxy war against the United States and Great Britain.

The Israelis would have to be insane to think that they can permanently flip Fatah against Hamas. Soon enough the weapons would all be used against Israel. Repeat the old Arab saying, ten times.

Not that Israel should do this, but anti-tank weapons are good against "up-armored security" vehicles (like Mercedes Benz).

“It is therefore truly amazing that, other than the foreign ministers of France and Spain, so few have raised their voice against Ahmadinejad. Why has there been no denunciation from President Bush, Secretary Rice or any other senior figure in the Administration? Unfortunately, this silence is part of a pattern.”

"There was silence when, on March 30, Hamas spokesman Ismail Radwan ended his sermon broadcast on the Palestinian Authority TV with the words, ‘The Hour [of Resurrection] will not take place until the Muslims fight the Jews and the Muslims kill them, and the rock and the tree will say: “Oh, Muslim, servant of Allah, there is a Jew behind me, kill him!” There was silence when, a Palestinian Arab author, Kan’an Ubayd, wrote in a Palestinian Arab newspaper in April, ‘the extermination of Jews is good … to which Allah gave his blessing.’ Why does the U.S. continue to deal with, support, fund and urge concessions to the PA when its elected officials call for genocide of Jews? Why are foreign governments not protesting or demanding a retraction of these statements? Now Ahmadinejad, head of a state that is believed to be close to acquiring nuclear weapons and which has openly discussed using them against Israel, speaks of Israel’s imminent destruction and the world remains largely silent.

Heh...

Hamas doesn't seem to have any problems getting weapons. Who knows, they may very well have a tank or two hidden away by now...

It's not as if the Israeli wall/fence is preventing anybody from entering or leaving those sections of the Holy Land that are currently illegally occupied by millions of Moslem immigrants.

It's just that Fatah, the pitiful remnants of the PLO, are stuck between the fence and Hamas.

Cue the worlds smallest violin...

Arafat, like the vast majority of "Palestinians" wasn't even a Pali. He was an Egyptian soldier, ordered by Nasser to lead terror attacks against Israel and trained by the KGB.

Guided Anti-tank missiles are useful in urban areas for pinpoint attacks on strongpoints- taking out a concrete building full of activists without blowing up the Martyr Mouse TV station next door, for example.

Of course they would never use them on Israeli targets..that would naughty.

Iran Adding Attack Boats in Persian Gulf,

Iran is increasing its fleet of small attack boats capable of challenging warships and disrupting oil traffic in the Strait of Hormuz, the sea route for two-fifths of the world's daily supply of crude oil, the U.S. Navy says.

Iran's Revolutionary Guard Corps already has more than 1,000 of the speedboats ``and continues to add boats armed with anti- ship cruise missiles,'' said Robert Althage, spokesman for the U.S. Office of Naval Intelligence.

"Iran still states that the Iranian Revolutionary Guard Corps will employ swarming tactics in a conflict,'' Althage said in an e-mail. Naval intelligence, in its latest report on threats, said an attack against U.S. forces and commercial tankers could include over 100 boats in coordinated groups of 20 to 30 approaching simultaneously from multiple axes.''

Question for LGF navy types: can the US Navy deal with that threat?

102 BIG  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 9:27:20am

I say we should give them the bullets but only after they have left the barrels of IDF guns.

I know how I'd deal with it. Three words: "Massive" and "Retaliation", with your choice of expletive in the middle.

//A: "What doesn't it include?"

Yes, quite effectively. Especially with two CSGs in the area. An attack like this would require massive coordinated command and control, which the IRGC does not have. The bigger concerns are all those mines and their Kilos, and the mobile platform cruise missiles on the coast. The could easily target international shipping like they have done previously in the 80s.

Like a gang of kids taking on a biker gang at a bar, they could get in one good punch before the sh*t got beat out of them, ultimately, yes, the USN has the fire-power on board to turn Iran into a glass-paved parking lot. But my question is whether the US would loose a major vessel to such a swarming attack? Or would they see it coming, from all the vectors and take them all out in time. I would assume these boats would be armed with missile launchers and not just a bunch of fanatical pirates waving scimitars.

If the IRGC's goal is to sink or damage a major US warship within the Gulf, at any cost. They could very well do so.

Mob tactics do not require massive coordination, all they require is a mob.

The IRGC has been practicing this very tactic, on a much smaller scale, since the early '80's.

The Phalanx mounts, which have never successfully intercepted an inbound anti-shipping missile in combat, would get a workout. Like the Phalanx mounts, the 5 and 3 inch deck guns can only fire just so many rounds before their magazines run dry.

Then we're reduced to US Marines and Sailors manning the decks with light and medium machineguns and small arms.

Funny, they've never seemed to have a problem obtaining weapons in the past.

The pre-text here is that without more weapons the "moderate" Fatah is going to be exterminated by HAMAS.

If so, I say good riddance to good rubbish.

Seriously, what has Israel to gain from this except the strong likelihood that weapons they provide to Fatah will end up being used against Israelis?

Fatah isn't going to exterminate Hamas, and why is it in Israel's (or anyone else's) interest to subsidize an endless Hamas/Fatah civil war?

Thanks for your comments. The US currently has 2 carriers strike groups and a Marine Expeditionery force. That's a hell of a lot of fire-power, but also a lot of targets. My guess is the Iranians will get in one or two lucky hits before the US stops them. I pray the commanders don't have to phone Washington for permission to shoot back.

A friend of mine told me he saw a Phalanx in action at the test facility run by the manufacturer. He was impressed, to say the least.

the Iranian small boats have to be sunk, BEFORE, not after a 'coordinated' attack

That's how i see it, & I'm sure how the brave sailors & Marines see it too. But what are the ROE? I would hope the USN has the green light to take out any boat or group of boats they deem a threat, as they approach certain distance for example.

Does Bush really think that the thing the Palestinians are lacking is "training."

Not to bore you but I am sick of hearing how long it takes to train the likes of the Palestinians, Iraqi's and others.

As the war of independance began shiploads of tired broken Jewish men came to Palestinine with no previous background in fighting. These men came after having somehow lost everything and everyone in the Shoah. What they saw and went through is impossible to describe in mere words. They were destroyed men inside. --->HOWEVER, in short time these destoryed men fought off the arab armies of Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon and did so with little training and inferior armaments!

And here we are living in a world who will not let up making excuses for why these poor people need more training. BULLSHIT! We have become the co-dependants to a lie for the poor Palestinians, Iraqi's and others because they are sooo untrained. WHAT THEY ARE is

LACKING WILL.

They are so used to others making excuses for them while doing little or nothing themselves to pull themselves up that now we find ourselves always having to prop them up with buckets of whitepaint with our fingers crossed behind our back.

The rag tag army of Israel beat off Egypt, Syria, Jordan, Iraq, Saudi Arabia and Lebanon simply because of sheer will.

When will we learn? When will the lies stop?

We can do nothing for those who lack the will to succeed for their own people! This is why all the training on the planet will do nothing but place us all the more close to death ourselves.

"This is the most promising moment for progress between Palestinians and Israelis in recent years. Over the past two days, I’ve had intensive and productive discussions with Israeli and Palestinian leaders. Based on those discussions and on our ongoing efforts with both parties, I depart the region confident of the success of the meeting tomorrow between President Abbas and Prime Minister Sharon. The United States is determined to do all that we can to take advantage of this moment of opportunity in the weeks and months ahead. As we have said on numerous previous occasions, ending violence and terror is essential to allowing the resumption of progress toward peace through the Road Map and the President’s two-state vision..."

What they really need is UN-TRAINING
from the society they grew up in.

This is something only they can do. Freedom is not given it is earned. We can morally no more give them freedom under the circumstance in which they live as we can give them a will to do good; a will for the better no matter how badly the powers that be try to do otherwise.

Their co-dependants in the west require un-training. Now we have a fire burning. Now we see before our eyes the victims have been turned into the victimizers. The good ones are the pariahs. Out of fear and paybacks and all kinds of twisted reasons we now have a bunch of coddled human beings aka terrorists who are hopelessly unable to help themselves.

The lies spoken to prop them up are like a gigantic knot which is almost impossible to untie. From this more and more lies flourish and we see ourselves literally teetering on the abyss.

141 Maine's Michael  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 3:31:59pm

Mucky

The definition of insanity is doing the same thing over and over again and expecting different results.

In all fairness, the ISraeli leadership is always in a bind. During Sharon's tenure, in his first years as PM, the US kept him on a short leash by withholding spare parts - for none other than the critical apache helicopters.

The US carefully modulated the level of violence done to Israelis so as to not allow enough to have them go batshit crazy, and just enough, from their point of view, to lubricate American machinations in Iraq and elsewhere in the Arab world.

The Israelis must bleed, and more importantly, be seen to bleed. It is simple Admin policy: 'Survive, but bleed, always, as we slowly whittle you down in size down to the bare minimum amount that modern technology can defend against premedieval murderers who want you and your children mutilated, killed, and thrown into the sea.'

This blood lubricates America's mid east policy.

Unfortunately, Olmert is even more pliable than the average Israeli leader has been in the past, or than he needs to be.

That's how I see it.

That is why a guy like Giuliani or Thompson, who have a logical and visceral hatred for the arab world, is just what the USA, and Israel, need.

142 Muck DeFuslims  Thu, Jun 7, 2007 5:22:09pm

MM, I agree with your oft stated thesis of Israeli blood being used to lubricate American machinations in the Mideast.

Although there is little doubt that the majority of Americans view Israel favorably and are sympathetic to her plight, and every President and administration has professed undying support for the Jewish nation as a valuable ally, behind the scenes there is an omnipresent desire to see Israel whither away with as little damage to American interests as possible.

The big problem for American policy makers is the Arabs have the oil, but Israel is the match that can ignite the entire region and turn over the chessboard, and that can never be allowed to happen.

In that respect Israel is a real pain in the ass to the USA. The upside to America is that in the meantime, there's billions in armaments to be sold to both sides of the conflict, and as long as the black gold keeps flowing all is cool.

Sooner or later though, the wild asses will make another more concerted effort to annihilate the tiny Jewish nation and this will push Israel, America and the entire planet to the brink of Armageddon.

The family was from Arkansas. The Dad (Dink) was a furniture salesman in San Bernardino, but back in the way-back-when he used to play 'bones' or 'spoons' in a minstrel show. To relive the golden days of yesteryear he would, from time to time, force his children to accompany him (Ronnie on guitar, Kenny on trombone) in a living room replay of a minstrel routine called "Lazy Bones."

The kids often found this to be an inconvenience, as they were fascinated by, and constantly perfecting new techniques for, The Manly Art Of Fart-Burning.
