Palestinian Civil War Watch

Tue, Jun 12, 2007 at 7:42:21 am PDT

They’re slaughtering each other with abandon in the Palestinian territories today, as Hamas seems to be trying to drive Fatah out of Gaza. And finally, the media are starting to face the fact: Deadly fighting drives Gaza closer to civil war.

GAZA CITY (AFP) - Hamas fighters armed with guns and rocket launchers besieged two Fatah security headquarters on Tuesday as deadly clashes threatened to topple the government and drive Gaza closer to civil war.

Gunmen from the radical Islamist movement ambushed two seats of the Fatah loyalist national security — the main Palestinian security force — in Gaza City and Jabaliya provoking clashes with those holed up inside.

Security officials and witnesses at the scene reported heavy fighting but were unable to give immediate reports of any casualties.

The attack came after mortar shells slammed into prime minister Ismail Haniya’s home and the seafront compound of president Mahmud Abbas in the latest bout of fighting that has killed 18 people in 24 hours.

The apparently no-holds barred conflict threatens the very foundations of a Hamas-Fatah coalition that took office less than three months ago in a bid to halt the feuding that has killed nearly 180 people since December.

And in the West Bank, Fatah thugs have kidnapped a Hamas deputy minister.

Threatening that shaky coalition even further.

OT

20 years ago today.

Are these the beginnings of profound changes in the Soviet state? Or are they token gestures, intended to raise false hopes in the West, or to strengthen the Soviet system without changing it? We welcome change and openness; for we believe that freedom and security go together, that the advance of human liberty can only strengthen the cause of world peace. There is one sign the Soviets can make that would be unmistakable, that would advance dramatically the cause of freedom and peace.
General Secretary Gorbachev, if you seek peace, if you seek prosperity for the Soviet Union and Eastern Europe, if you seek liberalization: Come here to this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, open this gate! Mr. Gorbachev, tear down this wall!

I wonder if Condi stills wants unchecked convoys traversing Israel twixt Gaza and the "west bank'?

Just last week.

Let's see, Condi. What depth of depravity to the 'palestinians' have to sink to before the concept of a 'palestinian stae' is taken off the table?

Targeting Israeli women, children, and other civilians? Nope.

Targeting each other? Nope.

Brainwashing their children and then sacrificng them on the alatar of Jew hatred? Nope.

Demonstrating complete and utter incompetence in managing their won affairs, beginning with sewage and moving up from there? Nope.

Sacrificing their own children

23 Far Sparkle  Tue, Jun 12, 2007 7:52:20am

Serious question:
Were they getting along better when it was simpler and easier to kill Jews? And now that they are fenced off, must the killing urge that has been programmed into them be expressed by killing each other?
This question calls for a comment by a Clinical Psychologist.

Sderot

And on the day one of those "flying objects," to use the disdainful expression uttered by attorney and advisor Dov Weisglass from central Israel, landed in Sderot and killed Shirel Friedman, one of the commentators on national television recounted the military options available to Israel, when newscaster Geula Even asked him with concern: But what will happen if, as a result, innocent Palestinians will be hurt?

I guess even the Israeli media is part of the problem, and not part of the solution.

Yet in any case, when the time comes to choose between the lives of Sderot children and the lives of innocents-or-not-so-innocent people in Gaza, I choose the lives of the former.

Amen!

An interesting thought from Mere Rhetoric...

What if Gaza chaos means that arch-terrorists - otherwise safe from Israel for diplomatic reasons - start getting knocked off? Would that justify Sharon's "you want a state... knock yourselves out" disengagement calling-of-the-world's-bluff?

I unequivocally and unreservedly condemn the terrorist swine shelling Sderot or any other Israeli city.

Back on topic, I hope the Gaza conflict does a couple of things. First, is that the terrorists will stay busy killing each other, thus keeping them out of operations against innocents. Second is that people will finally realize that Hamas and Fatah are nothing but gangs of thugs, unworthy of support from the United States or anywhere else.

Hope springs eternal...

I don't know if I buy into the civil war analogy in this case. It might be more accurate to think in terms of a proxy war between Iran (Hamas) and Saudi Arabia (Fatah). This wouldn't be the first time that Muslim States have vied to control the Palestinians. Egypt and Syria did it for much of the 70's and 80's.

Check out the link to the BBC website.

BBC have decided, in no uncertain terms,
that this chaos is the absolute fault of
the Israelis and their main backers, the
USA.

So, #12 - bigdada - blaming the truly
innocent victims - Israeli's and American's
took place as the first bullets were
fired.

And to think of the hundreds of thousands
of American lives and trillions of dollars
we have spent to keep England "free".

I'm beginning to think the USA should have
trade relationships with everyone. And
military relationships with only our true
friends. Israel, Austrailia and only a
small handful of other countries.

If the Europeans wish to march down the
road to serfdom, I think we are morally
compelled to let them.

Interfering in their lives and culture
- and the lives and cultures of the rest
of the world - only cause us Americans
scorn and hatred.

I do understand the argument that if we
don't stop the tyrants in their lands
they will eventually come to mine.

But I think if we tell the tyrants they
can do want they want in the rest of the
world as long as they trade their trinkets
with us, and let them know they will be
utterly destroyed if they even attempt to
harm us - or our loyal allies - may be the
best thing we can do for humanity.

President Bush letting Persia know it
will be wiped off the map if they attempt
to harm tiny Israel would be a good start.

A recent Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics study indicates that close to 70 percent of parents in the West Bank believe that their children are exposed to violence primarily by the Israeli army.

1) I'm quite sure the Palestinian Central Bureau of Statistics is a sober, non-partisan bunch of highly-trained number crunchers, aren't you?

2) I'm also sure that 99% of Palestinian parents surveyed "believe" that the Israelis are controlling their thoughts with Zionist penis-shrinking rays.

True.. but you'd think at this point, they'd be trotting out their grannies, retarded teenagers and disgruntled mothers festooned with suicide belts by now.

96 Golem Akbar  Tue, Jun 12, 2007 8:19:46am

I think Sharon's pullout was a mistake, but only on a technicality. I think he should have gotten an agreement from the Palis, one they would of course have broken, but an agreement nevertheless. Like the so-called Oslo Accord, it would be something the Israelis could hold up as Exhibit B (A being Oslo), another case of Pali's inability to keep their word.

However, all along, their real word has been "Death to Israel, Death to America," and has never waivered.

#70 pragmatist:
It's not just the BBC. The terrorists themselves are looking to fix blame for their civil war on Israel. Hamas calls Fatah collaborators, and Fatah blames their failing ability to fight Hamas on Israel's refusal to arm them and provide financial assistance.

Israel has nothing to do with this civil war. Hamas and Fatah are fighting because they are obsessed with power, and couldn't care about such things as elections, power sharing, or diplomacy. It's naked ambition, and Hama rules. They want the other side eliminated, and they'll take any action to do so. They'll go after each others' leaders; attack hospitals, and any other location where the terrorists are holed up.

#61 tfk:

How exactly is the corruption of three NGs sent by the gov't to enforce the borders supposed to be blamed on Bush? Corruption can exist anywhere, and to blame that on Bush is asinine.

You'd be correct to criticize Bush on continuing to try and push an amnesty/free ride for illegal immigrants in the country, along with failing to enforce existing laws and pushing border security first, but blaming the arrest of three NGs on running an illegal alien importing scheme on the President is too much.

OT:
Mike Nifong is facing the music for his Duke prosecution. He's going to be hammered hard - especially when evidence will show that one of the accused could not have been involved because he wasn't at the party at the time claimed when the alleged sexual assaults took place; not to mention the changing story by the accuser - who claimed at various times that any number of men sexually abused her - up to 20 in one account. Yet, he went forward with the case without actually interviewing her right off the bat.

This is a very rough video to watch...not for the squeamish...but I am ululululating...and they are already assigning blame...and a country that's name begins witt an 'I', not India, Iceland, Indonesia, etc., gets a big part of the blame...any wild guesses?

99 godfrey  Tue, Jun 12, 2007 8:22:59am

Since 1988, the "Palis" have been permitted to observe the General Assembly of the UN as "Palestine." They have an "ambassador" who is officially called a "permanent observer."

"Palestine" is recognized at the UN as a "sovereign entity," not a non-member "state," but that appears to be a step up from being an "intergovernmental organization having received a standing invitation to participate as an observer."

The further collapse of the PA into chaos should remove the grounds for calling "Palestine" a "sovereign entity" at the UN.

A motion should be made to that effect.

According to the AP story posted on Fox News web site the Egyptians are saying fuhgetaboutit

The head of the Egyptian mediation team, Lt. Col. Burhan Hamad, said neither side responded to his call to hold truce talks. "It seems they don't want to come. We must make them ashamed of themselves. They have killed all hope. They have killed the future," said Hamad, who brokered several previous short-lived cease-fires.

Hamad said both sides were about equal in firepower. "Neither can have a decisive victory," he said. "To be decisive, they need weapons that neither side has."

Interesting that he doesn't talk about laying down their arms or trying to hold some sort of discussion. Nope, let's just give one side or the other better weapons. Dontcha love the Muslim mindset?

An exact prediction of what Gaza would be like, published over 350 years ago:

The Incommodities of Such a War.

Whatsoever therefore is consequent to a time of war, where every man is enemy to every man; ... In such condition, there is no place for industry; because the fruit thereof is uncertain: and consequently no culture of the earth; no navigation, nor use of the commodities that may be imported by sea; no commodious building; no instruments of moving, and removing, such things as require much force; no knowledge of the face of the earth; no account of time; no arts; no letters; no society; and which is worst of all, continual fear, and danger of violent death; and the life of man, solitary, poor, nasty, brutish, and short.

Is it quacking like a duck? check.
Walking like a duck? check.

One wonders what exactly has to happen before the media calls this spade a spade?

They can't use the term "civil war" because that completely destroys the myth of a Palestinian nation. . .ie that the Gazans are actually willing and capable of peaceful self rule.

If they can't even stop from killing each other, why should anyone believe they are going to stop attacking Israel?

You are misquoting Lieberman a far as I know. I thought Lieberman was suggesting that we not allow Iranian training camps where they train the people who cross the border and kill American soldiers and set up IED's, and we know where the camps are. I think Colmes said "would that not be a provocation to Iran to continue its march towards nuclear weapons?" and Bolton said "if we don't do what Lieberman suggests we will be showing weakness and that will encourage Iran to continue its march to get nuclear weapons." I put quotes around it but the words are not quotes since I don't have that good a memory. I am just conveying the gist of what I remember from the conversation.

What was interesting on Hannity was that Colmes was not buying Pari's 24 hour turn around and Hannity was.

146 grumpy old codger  Tue, Jun 12, 2007 11:36:03am

Why even call it a civil war?

Why not call it what it is, that's two criminal enterprises struggling to control the money that's extorted from the rest of the world. I see it as more of a Capone-Moran thing. Two mobs fighting for control, not of the state (their actions already show us that they don't give a fig for a human life, even a Pali one, not to mention a jewish one. All they want is the money and the power.

Is that the definition of a civil war? Must it be a conflict between government forces vs. rebels? I thought that any time large numbers of civilians in organized groups fought against each other, that constituted a civil war.

152 grumpy old codger  Tue, Jun 12, 2007 12:46:21pm

No, civil war is out!

This is gang war, nothing more, nothing less. Two criminal enterprises wrapped up in theological garb, terrorizing the local palis and the neighboring Jews, making believe they can/could/are running a "state".

In reality, it's more of a turf war. We've got two well armed gangs, shooting up the town, with one goal in mind. control of the money that the West pours into the Pali state. They can hire any imam they want to issue a fatwa that "gives them legitimacy".

Think of Capone and Moran gangs shooting it out in Prohibition era Chicago. Its the same scam. Maybe its time for the Feds (aka the IDF) to go in andf clean up Dodge.
