Here's my take on the state of the jihad:

1.) The young men and women being recruited for this bloody and barbaric waste of time are not Holy Warriors; they are fantasists, for whom indulging in the illusion of a real cause is reason enough to kill themselves.

2.) The esteemed "Holy Warriors" that Dr. Zawahiri addresses are a veritable smorgasbord of psycho-pathology. Were it not for an astounding high prevalence of sexual repression, cowardice, malignant resentments against people who actually do something worthwhile, and wholly justified feelings of inadequacy, there would be no jihadis at all.

3.) Jihad, for all its pretensions to sacred inspiration, otherworldly rewards, and fatalistic mumbo-jumbo has only one thing going for it: it is possible to kill people with high explosives. That's it. Jihad may pretend to theological roots, but without chemistry, it is nothing.

4.) Forget about a Caliphate. Ain't gonna happen. There's this thing called reality that has only so much room for medieval fantasy. Islam may be one of the world's great religions, but is is wholly inadequate as a modern political system. There used to be a Caliphate. Used to be.

5.) Dr. Zawahiri and his like-minded psychotics have to give these periodic pep-talks because deep down inside they know the inevitable: the jihadist fantasy is doomed. Its days are numbered, not just because it based on primitive and disordered psychological wants, it is doomed because it is fundamentally inhuman, and inhuman dogmas inevitably fail. Just like the followers of Baal, the jihadists will be left behind by the human spirit. The decent Muslims know this.

Have you ever wondered what happened to the 56 men who signed the Declaration of Independence?

Five were imprisoned by the British as traitors, and tortured before they died.

Twelve had their homes ransacked and burned.

Two lost their sons serving in the Revolutionary Army; another had two sons captured.

Nine of the 56 fought and died from wounds or hardships of the Revolutionary War.

They signed and they pledged their lives, their fortunes, and their sacred honor.

What kind of men were they?

Twenty-four were lawyers and jurists.

Eleven were merchants, nine were farmers and large plantation owners; men of means, well educated, but they signed the Declaration of Independence knowing full well that the penalty would be death if they were captured.

Carter Braxton of Virginia, a wealthy planter and trader, saw his ships swept from the seas by the British Navy. He sold his home and properties to pay his debts, and died in rags.

Thomas McKeam was so hounded by the British that he was forced to move his family almost constantly. He served in the Congress without pay, and his family was kept in hiding. His possessions were taken from him, and poverty was his reward.

Vandals or soldiers looted the properties of Dillery, Hall, Clymer, Walton, Gwinnett, Heyward, Ruttledge, and Middleton.

At the battle of Yorktown, Thomas Nelson Jr., noted that the British General Cornwallis had taken over the Nelson home for his headquarters. He quietly urged General George Washington to open fire. The home was destroyed, and Nelson died bankrupt.

Francis Lewis had his home and properties destroyed. The enemy jailed his wife, and she died within a few months.

John Hart was driven from his wife's bedside as she was dying. Their 13 children fled for their lives. His fields and his gristmill were laid to waste. For more than a year he lived in forests and caves, returning home to find his wife dead and his children vanished.

Some of us take these liberties so much for granted, but we shouldn't.

So, take a few minutes while enjoying your 4th of July holiday and silently thank these patriots. It's not much to ask for the price they paid.

Remember: freedom is never free! I hope you will show your support by sending this to as many people as you can, please. It's time we get the word out that patriotism is NOT a sin, and the Fourth of July has more to it than beer, picnics, and baseball games.

As to your point about the left, I really believe that the problem isn't so much that they hate America, so much as it is that "progressives" paradoxically fear progress. Progressives are not motivated by a desire for change as much as a desire for indulgence. They are at odds with Christianity and Judaism because those institutions wisely recognize that indulgence can be destructive. But they tolerate the intolerance of Conservative Islam and the repression of multiculturalism because those are seen as opposed to what they really fear: The inevitable progress that results from private property and market freedom. They fear it because they know that those who drive progress have power, and they fear anyone other than themselves having power. This theory explains radical environmentalists, socialists, terrorist apologists, grievance pimps, The New York Times, and every Hollywood pants-wetter whose contribution to socierty consists solely of pretending to be someone else. The left fears the freedom of others because they are emotional and silly. They don't fear the radical Islamists because they are naive, and think that their own inherent wonderfulness makes them immune to it all.

It is on live now, on NBC, from NYC, and there are fireworks right down the road, in the harbor, but it has been drizzling,and also raining off and on, and I do not hear them..and Rye Playland also is supposed to hear them..I hear something just now...my husband went on the balcony to see if it is here or Rye..it is Rye. The question I have about Islam is:

Ours must have been cancelled, like DC.

Mine were cancelled too. Usually my family goes to my uncle's house, and at the appointed time, head up the hill on the golf course next door. From there, we can see the fireworks of about six different little shore towns, all at the same time.

But not this year... drizzling on and off for a few hours now.

No 'sploshuns for me.

Anybody else here ever play Killer Bunnies or Nuclear War? For the uninitiated, the card games in question use what is called a run cycle: You place 2 or 3 cards face down in front of you, and your first move is to flip over the front card in order to play it, then add a card to the back at the end of your turn.

Events may occasionally render the frontmost card a moot point. You may have put in place a card that makes A happen if B is true two turns ago, but one turn before you actually flip the card over, events could have made B no longer true, making the card a waste of a turn.

Al Qaeda has a system for distributing videos meant to avoid Western intelligence and their ability to track the video back to the source. This system can take a bit of time.

You want my semi-educated wild-ass guess? This was meant to gloat over a successful attack of car bombs on London streets---only the attack was halted, and the perps had to settle for a halfass attack on the Glasgow airport with gasoline.

I think there will always be a violent element in Islam, not so much because Islam turns otherwise decent and compassionate people into cowardly killers, as much as it has elements that appeal to people disposed to be killers. If you are disposed to killing innocent people, your attention is much more likely to be held by a religious tradition that advocates killing unbelievers "using every stragtagem of war" than it is "blessed are the meek, for they shall inherit the earth." Jihadi's are not selected by God because of their wonderful martial qualities, they are self-selected because they have loose screws.

I think it is important to remember that jihad is not all that violent a perspective historically. The Israelites under Joshua, the Mongols, the Huns, the Aztecs ,the Vikings were all very violent men of their times. Read up on how the Mongols took care of the Assassins. The jihadis want us to think they are fearsome because they are anachronisms. The Hadiths feed into their pathology, but really, the world has seen it all before.

When we in the west get over this fallacious nonsense that we are only good as others think we are, and stop absolving decent Muslims of their responsibility to descredit wahabbism and sufism, the romance of jihad will fade. Sadly, the violent elements of various religions (which are really matters of epidemiology rather than theology) will always be with us.

It is letting up here. It was a nice day til just before dinnertime. Now, the rail has stopped, but it feels like there is another band to come through. We are in NY, right on LI sound, near CT.

The anchorman for the 11PM news just gave the headlines on a commerical break...lots of local parades and fireworks cancelled due to weather. Ours fireworks was, also.

The parade was the other day, in conjunction with the Firemans' Carnival, at the harbor.

You make some excellent points. The remarkable ease that Wahhabist imams have in recruiting converts to Islam in the West's prison systems gives proof to your first statement. Many find the path a short and simple journey.

But I wonder if there is a "stunting effect" in the religion itself as well. The abundance of willing warriors indicate a vast and effective internal recruitment, in both major branches of the faith, and, increasingly, in all areas of the world, including places that were known for their tolerant versions of Islam.

As for the violence of other peoples, in other places, at other times... very true, however I am unaware of any other religion that entrenched violence so deeply in their founding texts. It is simply too easy to take the words of Muhammad literally... and given the lack of hierarchy in Islam, too hard to permanently expunge the literalists.

We are in for a long, uphill slog... and half our country is dead weight.

On channel 7? Dozens of fireworks in the metro area had to be cancelled because of the darned weather. I can imagine the 7-year old if they couldn't go to Jones Beach. Damn, it was cancelled. All over NY and NJ..waves at Jones Beach? 10-12 feet high. No signs on highways..people were not happy, to say the least.

They said there was a lot of security at the Macy's fireworks.

Great...worse weather with bad thunderstorms tomorrow. Feh!

They took abu ghraib, a minor situation, where some TERRORISTS were humiliated by a few troops acting outside their orders, and called it torture. They make far more out of abu ghraib than where TERRORISTS torture and behead their captives. It gives me reason to question, not only their patriotism, but their sanity as well.
