-RetweetLGF Ajax Comment Preview

Thu, Jul 5, 2007 at 12:46:20 pm PDT

We have a very cool enhancement to announce: our comment preview feature, that lets you see what a comment will look like with all your formatting before you post it, is now driven by Ajax.

For years, when you clicked the ‘preview’ button, you were taken to a separate page. Now, clicking the button will cause a preview of your comment to display just underneath the comment posting form. Using Ajax, I’m able to call a PHP module on our server that formats, filters, and transmogrifies the comment, rendering it exactly as it will appear when posted.

Again we see that dual Ajax benefit—faster for you to see a preview, and less bandwidth-intensive for our server. Stinky thanks you, the hamsters thank me, and I thank myself for coding it.

Important! You should use your browser’s ‘Reload’ button to reload the page now, so that your browser is using the latest versions of all the code.

  • Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
  • Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
  • Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
  • Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
  • Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.
  • REMEMBER: posting comments at LGF is a privilege, not a right. Abuse that privilege, and your account will be blocked.

The new comment system is so sophisticated, it previews comments I haven't even made yet, to posst that have yet to be written.

LGF is truly ahead of its time.

Remove the cord from the back of your keyboard and jam it in your ear. (I tried it - didn't work - might work for a nihilist, though)

Folks, what do you think of this suggestion:

Make the previewed text appear ABOVE the preview box, so that it's visible basically instantaneously without having to scroll down to see it.

Would this idea be an improvement, or just pointless fiddling?

21 Ward Cleaver  Thu, Jul 5, 2007 12:52:44pm

Tried that -- but it pushes the form down and that's kind of annoying if you're working on a comment.

I don't know if this is a nationwide phenomenon, but driving around the freeways of metro Detroit, I've come across three hand made Ron Paul signs on overpasses. Two of them say, "Who is Ron Paul?" The third one was something about Ron Paul saving the United States.

Tech nerds at Stanford have already succeeded in doing that -- remotely picked up brainwaves and used them to control a computer cursor. First they started with wires from the head to the computer, then went wireless.

You gotta be no more than about 2 feet from the computer for it to work, though.

Still in beta testing. (Deisgned for disabled people and -- most importantly -- military pilots.)

Ah, that's true -- especially when writing a long comment. It wouldn't push it much down with a short comment -- but then again, with a short comment, not much scrolling would be necessary either.

It's a wash. Leave the design as it stands!

Can't improve on perfection.

61 zombie  Thu, Jul 5, 2007 1:03:52pm

Charles, is the following overly demanding and unnecessary time-saver possible to code in Ajax (or anything else):

Allow formatting of text in the comment box to mimic the capabilities of a word-processing document, specifically:

Highlight a word, and click "command-I" to make it italic, "command-B" to make it bold, "command-apostrophe" to make it quoted, and so on? (Not sure what the 'command" key is called on a Windows keyboard, but you get the gist).

In other words, allow keyboard shortcuts to format comments, as opposed to the formatting links above the box, or doing it by hand?

If it's a big hassle, don't bother, but if it's simple and easy -- well, let the public vote. Folks, what do you think of such a suggestion?

62 NY Nana  Thu, Jul 5, 2007 1:03:56pm

They appear on my ISP home page ONLY when I turn on Firefox. Does not seem to happen in EI7, which I don't care for.

For example, instead of >>Title of whatever, it will appear ?Title.

And even here, in the posted comments (seems when someone copies and pastes from another source), there are question marks instead of commas, e.g, "they're" shows up as "they?re".

Weird.

You'd be amazed at how much processing has to take place when a comment is posted--just to make sure it doesn't have any bad HTML code, bad words, too-long words, annoying repetitions, 'first!' posts, bad karma, etc. etc.

Wow! You've actually programmed in the avoidance of bad karma? You've ascended to truly immortal realms!

I don't even know if that's technically possible. But what a dream it would be!

Yes it is possible. Ajax is a fairly mundane technology these days. Charles has done a great job, but this is all fairly standard stuff. Ajax allows you to pretty much arbitrarily add/modify/delete stuff from the web page programmatically without a refresh.

Since LGF can already display new posts dynamically, it is relatively simple to code it to accept new posts and then display them in the same fashion.

I love the new LGF stuff, but hey guys, it's just Ajax programming at the end of the day.

Thomas Jefferson Elementary School in Berkeley, Calif., is now Sequoia Elementary School because Jefferson owned slaves and his name "is offensive to a significant part of the population."

That's old news around here. They've been furiously debating it for at least five years.

Here in moonbatland, Thomas Jefferson -- the single person most responsible for creation the United States of America, and the most liberal of the Founding Fathers -- is a diabolical slave-owning demon.

It would be a hell of a hassle for Charles to turn the editing box into a WYSIWYG word processor. Even drag and drop would be very, very, programming intensive (although Wikiganda has that feature).

In the future, there may be a commercial application that does all this for blogs, but it would be a significant application that would have to stay resident on each user's computer.

I don't know if this was linked previously or not, but I could not resist:

Study: Women don't talk more than guys

Another stereotype - chatty gals and taciturn guys - bites the dust. Turns out, when you actually count the words, there isn't much difference between the sexes when it comes to talking.

The researchers placed microphones on 396 college students for periods ranging from two to 10 days, sampled their conversations and calculated how many words they used in the course of a day.

The score: Women, 16,215. Men, 15,669.

As a married man with 3 daughters, I offer this without comment. I may be dumb but I ain't stupid.

Google Earth Catches new Chinese sub in picture

Not only is it catching license plates and faces- we can now use it to find China's new subs

A commercial satellite image appears to have captured China's new nuclear ballistic missile submarine. The new class, known as the Jin-class or Type 094, is expected to replace the unsuccessful Xia-class (Type 092) of a single boat built in the early 1980s.

The new submarine was photographed by the commercial Quickbird satellite in late 2006 and the image is freely available on the Google Earth web site.

Hillary has no room, whatsoever, to criticize Bush for any pardons.

Libya's Gaddafi Storms Out of AU Summit

A disappointed Libyan leader, Col. Muammar Gaddafi, left the AU Summit in Accra, Ghana, prematurely on Tuesday night after the majority of African leaders, including President Yoweri Museveni, rejected a call for the immediate creation of a United States of Africa.
---
The Libyan leader, dressed in a golden tunic and wearing sunglasses most of the time, reportedly angered several delegations by stating that he helped them in their liberation struggles and knew their countries better than them, accusing those who opposed his scheme of not being interested in developing.

He allegedly also caused unease when he proposed the immediate creation of continental ministries, beginning with a ministry of defence, which he proposed to head himself.

Reuters reports Kaddafi got a much darker tan for the trip.

Any guesses which side Rev. Jesse was there to lobby for?

In 1979, after Jackson met with Libyan Embassy officials at PUSH headquarters, a Libyan diplomat gave PUSH $10,000. The donation triggered a Justice Department probe "as to whether Jackson was required to register as a Libyan agent"...

244 mich-again  Thu, Jul 5, 2007 2:02:03pm

MEMRI has posted an editorial from an Islamist website that makes a startling discovery. There just might be a connection between Islam and terrorism after all.

"This scene of bloody vengeance in Gaza came at the same time as another scene, no less bloody and perfidious, in the Nahr Al-Bared Palestinian refugee camp near Tripoli in northern Lebanon. There, gunmen from a group calling itself Fath Al-Islam opened fire on soldiers from a Lebanese Army battalion as it was carrying out a routine patrol near the camp, leaving some 20 of them dead...

"Despite there being no known connection between the events in Gaza and those in Tripoli, the proliferation of the use of Islamic appellations (The Islamic Resistance Movement [i.e. Hamas], Fath Al-Islam, Hizbullah, Jund Al-Sham, Islamic Jihad) has made Arab and Islamic public opinion ask itself whether there is something in Islam, as a faith or as a practice, that leads to all this violence and aggression. And it is understandable that they should ask this.

That pegged the obvious meter.

Report: Roenick decides to retire

PHILADELPHIA -- Jeremy Roenick is retiring, a newspaper reported, after an 18-year NHL career in which he became the third-leading American goal-scorer in league history with 495.

Roenick, a nine-time All-Star who played with four teams, sent a text message to a reporter at The Philadelphia Inquirer reading, "I'm retiring; is that still news?" The story was posted on the paper's Web site Wednesday.

Here's why I find this funny.

Former Black Hawk and current Detroit Redwing teamate Chris Chelios gave Roenick his nickname "The Moth". Chelios gave Roenick that nickname for Roenick's habit of running to the cameras in the club house like a human moth everytime the camera lights went on. Having been in the BlackHawks clubhouse a time or two myself after games, I can attest that you would have had to nail Roenick's feet to the floor to keep him from jumping in front of the cameras everytime the lights went on, when he played well that is.

Now he sends a text message when he is retireing.

"Islamic group drive Christians away from Mosul," from the Eastern Star News Agency:
A statement by an Islamic group that calls itself the Islamic Emirate of Mosul threatened to kidnap or kill all Christians whether students or employees in Mosul University if they did not leave the university campus in three days.

According to the statement that was posted on city streets, the Islamic group threatened as well all Christians living in Mosul to leave the city within three days or the group will behead any Christian who will remain in the city.

Mattapan? Good grief..I have never seen those. A lot of my family, on my Mum's ZT"L side, was from there and Dorchester, decades ago.

Not politically correct, but in reading an article about Leonard Nimoy, who grew up near Blue Hill Avenue, I learned that the area Gentiles referred to it as "Jew Hill Avenue".

There's nothing I can do about cutting and pasting garbage characters, by the way... you should try a different browser and see if the problem goes away.

Can we temporarily suspend this horrible experiment in cruelty if and when a major hurricane draws within 300 miles of the US coastline?

A hurricane bulletin that isn't pink with a lime background and flashing magenta border in 20 point font just isn't a hurricane bulletin.

I'll trade having to hit the 'F-5' again and getting rid of the new comments/show link if it means getting back the ability to psot in big and gaudy.

At the moment, they're still tryign to figure out how to not (get caught for) kill(ing) each other, and thier businesses.
Remember the businesses burned out after Saddam's Execution?

Things seem stable at the moment.
However...

No argument here. CSS hacks are too numerous and subtle to deal with except through outright exclusion.

Ed,

We used to call it that, too, and still do! Now IIRC, the Jewish community is all but gone from Mattapan, Dorchester, Roxbury, etc. Brookline, Natick, Sharon, etc., have sizable Jewish communities. Brighton and Newton, where I grew up? Not sure.

Hmmm, how about a new shortcut button above, by the strike and bold, that inserts some kind of propietary code for at least larger font-size and colors, maybe four or five from a drop down menu.

Or, maybe when a hurricane does get w/i 300 miles of the US coast, you change the code, so my posts get a flashing magenta border.

Aargh! Now I have to remember? One was on East bound 696 near Greenfield. One was on South I-75 between Square Lake and Big Beaver. The third one . . . I just can't remember, but it was south Oakland County. Every time though, I thought I should take pictures, but not at 70 mph. And I would have to borrow my daughter's camera. If I think of it though, I will try to photograph at least one of the signs and post it.

LOLOL! I made the mistake of playing that for my 7-year old granddaughter when she stayed for the weekend...and she kept playing it and playing it, and playing it...it is from a singer she adores..one of the best for kids, IMHO, even if he is a bit of a moonbat...Raffi.

She must still be singing it! She has his concert albums. I have created a monster! :)

Dry, so far, but storms are approaching.

Charles,

Your web site is awesome. Love the new bells and whistles, although that's not why I'm a lizard.

Have you thought about packaging all of this as a "one stop web-log app"? I think you have developed enough extras to have a real hit here, both on the front end and the back end. You'll want to see a copyright attorney first, and then maybe sell a content-washed package on-line? I really think you'd have some takers...

I should have given credit to the artist! I found this on a Web site with several ASCII cats. After you asked, I looked at sites until I found the site for what looks to be the creator of this leaping jaguar design - Joan Stark - see link below for the pets area. She has a bunch of them - and JGS should be included on them, including hamsters, Charles. :)

those hamsters are doing a ton of work for charles. must buy them a bag of hamster feed.

charles -> the preview doesnt really work at lower resolutions.
if you try it at 1024x768 the preview button is below the fold. might be better to have it near the top of this coment box.
