Here is why we are going to have no assimilation of Spanish speaking immigrants, illegal or otherwise...

Dear Mr. Argybargy:

Thank you for contacting Pillsbury with your comment about a Spanish and/or bilingual package of Pillsbury products. We are sorry you were offended.

These products are part of our effort to reach the growing number of people of Hispanic origin in the United States . According to recent census figures, over 42 million Hispanics reside in the U.S. , and of those, 73 percent rely on Spanish as their primary language. These people select their food from the same shelves as the general population, but their understanding of these products is limited. We wish to offer them and their families an equal opportunity to enjoy our quality products.

Our efforts to reach the Hispanic residents are in no way intended to be un-American. A proud American company, General Mills employs over 80,000 people in the United States . In a country where the ethnic composition is changing rapidly, the livelihood of our employees is increasingly dependent on consumption of our products by people of all races, creeds and ethnic origins. Thus, we have initiated attempts to reach Spanish-speaking customers.

We appreciate your bringing this matter to our attention and will carefully review the information you provided with our promotion and advertising staff. We value every one of our customers and we would like to continue to include you among them in the use and enjoyment of our products.

Sincerely,

Nancy Jackson

General Mills

No outrage in MSM or anywhere else:
Gunfire, explosions rock besieged mosque in Pakistan's capital; reports of children used as human shields

Also Aziz gave an interview, still in the burqa he disguised himself in to flee...

No outrage... because this is acceptable behavior for these creatures, no doubt.

A rather brisk 22º at SFO

23º at Oakland

I imagine the marine layer is stacked up against the Berkeley Hills.

41º at Stockton Yup, the marine layer is to shallow to get over the hills.

Toasty 47º at Death Valley, 45º (113ºF) in Vegas and a really unpleasant 52º (125ºF) in Baker, CA.

On the other hand, at the end of June, the closest weather station to the South Pole set an all time record of -131ºF, so it isn't hot everywhere, and with all the rain in Texas, neither Dallas or Houston has seen a 100ºF day yet.

How would you describe this blog in one sentence?

65 Shiplord Kirel  Thu, Jul 5, 2007 3:44:09pm

Discussion topic:

Alan Colmes (aka Strawman Von Skeletor) typically dismisses the influence of leftist celebrities as insignificant. This would seem to be at least a little disingenuous since Strawman frequently interviews lefty entertainers on his politically oriented radio call-in show, sometimes going far to the fringe to do so, and was himself a stand-up comedian before deciding to go straight.

He did ask an interesting question the other night, though: If Hollywood is so leftist, why is it that only (more or less) conservative celebrities seem to get elected to high office? He named Reagan, Schwarzenegger, and Fred Thompson as examples. This is important because it is likely to become a standard talking point among lefty pop-culture apologists. Off the top of my head, I can't remember any lefty celebrity who has reached an office as high as governor, let along the White House, but Straw-man's invited inference, that this disproves the notion of an overwhelming leftist pop-culture establishment, is only superficially credible.
These three are manifestly not typical of the Hollywood establishment, nor of the internal culture of the media-industrial complex as a whole. Leftists have the burden of demonstrating otherwise.
One thing that has occurred to me is that only those to the right of the spectrum in the entertainment world would be close enough to the American mainstream to have any chance of winning an election. It is hard to imagine someone like Rosie O'Donnell, not especially radical by entertainment world standards, running for governor anywhere with any chance of success. Many other lefty entertainers have extensive histories of drug abuse and scrapes with the law. Enough of this is normally a disqualification from elective politics even among Democrats, particularly since leftist celebrities (unlike say Bush and Schwarzenegger) are not convincingly repentant about their past transgressions. Indeed, they often seem proud of them.
In any case, a fairly mainstream Hollywood lefty, like Ed Asner, would rank as a bomb-throwing weirdo, completely beyond the pale, in the world of elective politics.
Leftist Hollywood is locked out of office by its own extremism, but this does not mean that they are locked out of influence.

Rep. John Conyers, D-Mich., chairman of the House Judiciary Committee, has scheduled hearings Wednesday on Bush's commutation of Libby's 2 1/2-year sentence.

Hearings for what? What doesn't this brain-dead moronic liberal piece of shit not understand about Art. II, Sec. II of the Constitution?

Do these dimocrat asswipes not wonder why their approval rating is 14%?

Here's why:

Since January when the dimocrats took control of Congress, what have they done?

A. Tried to cut and run (surrender) in Iraq by not allocating money for the necessary equipment for our troops.

B. Started over 600 investigations of the Bush Administration.

C. Proposed massive tax increases on every American, including millions of the poorest Americans removed from the tax rolls by the Bush tax cuts.

That's about it...

I hope these A-holes enjoy their majority because it'll end in Jan. 2009 if they keep doing shit like this.

I'll have to look him up but Cheif Sequoia may owned had a few himself.

Rather, the English and scientific name for the trees came from the fame and accomplishments of the Cherokee Chief Sequoya. A silversmith, trader, and U.S. Army soldier who lived in Cherokee County, Georgia, in the early nineteenth century, Sequoya became famous for devising a way of writing his native language.

Ultimatum to Mosul's Christians: Leave within 3 days or die

A statement by an Islamic group that calls itself the Islamic Emirate of Mosul threatened to kidnap or kill all Christians whether students or employees in Mosul University if they did not leave the university campus in three days.

According to the statement that was posted on city streets, the Islamic group threatened as well all Christians living in Mosul to leave the city within three days or the group will behead any Christian who will remain in the city.

It may sound Orwellian, but I'm getting a sense that a requirement for world peace is the whole world must first become Dar ul Harb.

Stupidity on wheels

Well, that was easy. Less than 72 hours after President Bush commuted Scooter Libby's jail sentence (and that includes a national holiday), erstwhile Prisoner 28301-016 paid his financial debt to society. Cheney's Cheney's $250,400 check -- 250 grand, plus a $400 "special assessment" -- was posted on the U.S. District Court's docket this afternoon. So much for the financial hardship his supporters had touted in defending Bush's actions.

My 3 cents worth:

The conservatives in the entertainment industry have to get their arguements polished in order to garner any support to their cause; whereas, the with the lll hollywood uneducated elite, the farther left you are the more play you get by the media. I mean, Sean Penn visiting Mount Rushmore would not make a six month news story.
(This same phenomena occurs with the media and people of color-the more outlandish the claim, the more the media goes to the bizarre rather than the 'norm.')

More celebrity politicians

Roy Acuff (R): Acuff, one of the pillars of the country-music scene in Nashville, ran for Tennessee governor twice (in 1944 and 1948) -- both times unsuccessfully. Acuff's political ambitions were reportedly the result of then Gov. Prentice Cooper's (D) refusal to attend a ceremony honoring him.
Novelist Upton Sinclair (Socialist/D): The famed author of "The Jungle" made a number of runs for office -- primarily in California where he moved in 1915. He ran for Congress twice -- once from New Jersey and once from California; he went on to campaign for Senate (1922) and governor (1926) as a Socialist.

In 1934 he was the Democratic party's nominee for governor.

yes. But i'm not sure that is the right question. Instead of asking "is Hamas really attempting to create order or just was it just a movie", we should really be asking:

Is "order" imposed by a hate filled Mafia really acceptable.

The Nazis had order, the jet, fixed wing aircraft, stealth technology, and trains that ran on time. But I'm not sure that was enough to want us to over look the murder, fascism, destruction, and evil ideology, in an attempt to find reason to accept Nazi rule over Europe.

Boy, somebody is in BIG trouble at Associated Press and Yahoo. Get a load of what got through their editors and posted to Yahoo:

Al-Qaida video reflects group's troubles

BAGHDAD - A new video by al-Qaida's deputy leader Thursday left no doubt about what the terror network claims is at stake in Iraq, describing it as a centerpiece of its anti-American fight and insisting the Iraqi insurgency is under its direct leadership.

But the proclamations by Ayman al-Zawahri carried another unintended message: reflecting the current troubles confronting the Sunni extremists in Iraq, experts said.

...al-Qaida in Iraq, the group that claims allegiance to Osama bin Laden's goals, has been put on the defensive. Some Sunni insurgent groups have publicly split with it, distancing themselves from its bomb attacks on Iraqi civilians and accusing al-Qaida of trying to strong-arm their members into joining.

One influential faction, the 1920 Revolution Brigades, has openly helped U.S. forces in new offensives against al-Qaida in and around Baghdad, and some Sunni tribes have turned against it in western Anbar province.

Here's a great example of doing something rather than just talking about it.

John Ratzenberger, aka Cliff Claven and a voice in every single animated movie made lately, invented a subsitute for foam packing peanuts.

Outside the entertainment industry, John's love and respect for nature and the environment influenced his business interests. In 1989, John developed packaging alternatives made from biodegradable and non-toxic recycled paper as a safe alternative to Styrofoam "peanuts" and plastic bubble wrap. The first product, Quadra-pack, became an international success with clients including Hallmark, Elizabeth Arden, and Nordstrom.

John has since sold his creation, which is now sold in over 58 countries, and counting. "It's the only earth we have”, John states, "and I have never been a member of the cause of the month club. Concern for the environment shouldn't be confined to a one day celebration every 20 years."

And the invitation's still open for a weekend if you're in the Livermore area and we're out at our hangar at the airport - the beer's always cold - just ask mickthemick or Dianna (or Iron Fist even!).

Brenda! We were just talking about you the other night (favorably, of course!).

It's reallly, really nice in the city this afternoon - as Ed says, the marine layer is staving off the heat - little breeze, feels really great.

French Minister on Video saying it is possible Bush is behind 9/11 attacks.

[Link: dailymotion.alice.it...]

I am shamelessly plugging my post on the original lgf thread here, because it is the last one (#310), and unlikely to get as much attention. I do not want to deny you any fun at the expense of the French.

Here is the offending French Minister of Housing's Governmental Email Address:

And here is the French Embassy's webpage for questions about governmental policy:

I was politely blunt. I am not saying you should be.

Unsuccessful preemptive honor killing:

Baby survives being buried alive
Indian baby's hand

A two-day-old baby girl in India has survived after being buried alive in a field by her maternal grandfather in the south of the country.

Police say they have arrested the baby's grandfather, 52-year-old Abdul Rahman, after he confessed to trying to kill the newborn by burying her alive.

"I am yet to marry off four daughters and cannot take responsibility for a fifth one, even when she is only a granddaughter," Mr Rahman was quoted as telling police.

I hear that the vortexes attract moonbats. I use a Glock 27 if the moonbats get too rowdy.Mostly though, they just flit around annoyingly.

They attract moonbats like moths to a light. It would be more fun to dart them and release them in the deep woods.

Fred Thompson: We Need a Lazy Politician

Since the word got out that Fred Thompson will likely enter the Presidential race in July, there has been constant talk about his governmental experience, his conservatism, and yes, his alleged laziness. It is comical, however, to think that the worst thing that can be said about Thompson is that he "did not like to work very hard." Personally, I could not think of anything that would make him more qualified to work in government; laziness is on the top of my list of qualities I want in a politician. In fact, we desperately need more of them.

Conversely, it is precisely because of hardworking politicians that our government cannot live within its means, we have an administrative nightmare, there are never-ending entitlement programs, pork barrel spending is at an all-time high, and our tax system is an embarrassment. For some reason, politicians and the American public think that more needs to be done about everything. No, in reality we need to stop doing everything. Specifically, stop creating government programs to solve problems created by the government.

In my humble opinion, we need more politicians to get elected and do absolutely nothing. Make no compromises. Pass no bills. Make no laws. Make no press appearances. Do not even answer the phones. Just sit and stare out a window.

Once we allow this to happen for two years or so, and the Country gets back in shape, then we can talk about removing the wasteful laws we have on the books. We can eliminate just about every federal government agency. Finally, after four years, Fred Thompson can drive his big red pickup truck back to Tennessee after a job well-done.

Line breaks inside quoted comments should now behave in the expected way, with complete obedience.

If you look through this thread you'll see some quoted comments that have all their line breaks stripped out so that sentences run together.

Now fixed.

I have a question for those of you who spend more time than I do these days talking to loonie leftists.

Someone I know asserts that quoting Caligula thusly, "Let them hate us so long as they fear us." must, regardless of context, be interpreted as a statement of support for the current administration.

Is this something the loonie left is telling themselves these days?

The left likes to pretend that hate is what the right and only the right does, and that anything right-wing is equivalent to Bush and war and death and even defense.

The left fears to be feared, for some unknown or at least very distasteful psychological reasons.

In actuality, I think Bush is not in the least eager for the US to be hated by anybody, even the Muslims, so if and when the left says that, they're just spewing their usual nonsense.

Well, that's what I'm trying to discover. Do lefties you talk to actually take that as a code-phrase or is it just the paranoid ravings of this particular lefty I know?

In either case, if I were to quote someone to express concorde with this administration (not likely), I think it would have to be James Buchanan.

Wow. I hope my relatives in India can remain safe enough with this kind of antipathy against Christians. And they own a Montessori School and put on Christmas plays every year. I hope India doesn't become like Pakistan. Distant relatives on my mother's side fled Pakistan during Partition because the Muslims would kill them if they stayed. Would be a shame if that kind of crap caught up with them 60 years later.

I just read a FASCINATING work by someone, a former reporter, who over a 24 year period of research: interviews with retired personnel, FOIAs (and appeals of redactions due to security classification) filed with the USN, his coverage of the 'quid pro quo' testimony of John Walker (of the, now infamous, "Walker family") in the Government's case against another member of the spy ring, lays out a remarkable case of what really may have happened in the loss of the USS Scorpion (SSN 582) in 1968.. and tied it to other events (surficially unrelated) occuring at the time.

The book is "Scorpion Down". Ed Offley is the author.
