-RetweetThe Blotter: US Al Qaeda Cell

Tue, Jul 10, 2007 at 6:01:17 pm PDT

ABC News seems to be using The Blotter (their “blog”) as a dumping ground for stories that they don’t want to put on their main web site. Tonight they have a scary report that an Al Qaeda cell is either in the US already or on the way.

Senior U.S. intelligence officials tell ABC News new intelligence suggests a small al Qaeda cell is on its way to the United States, or may already be here.

The White House has convened an urgent multi-agency meeting for Thursday afternoon to deal with the new threat. Top intelligence and law enforcement officials have been told to assemble in the Situation Room to report on:

—what steps can be taken to minimize or counter the threat,

—and what steps are being taken to harden security for government buildings and personnel.

“It suggests they have information that the cell or cells coming this direction want to attack a government facility,” Brad Garrett, a former FBI agent and ABC News consultant, said.

And officials say the London attackers use of the Internet left important clues that are being used to decode other e-mails that had initially been deemed unimportant but are now taking on new significance.

So, what does this tell us about the ongoing situation?

Well, Democrats will quickly claim this is just a puffed up threat and that there's no news there.

We've suspected that AQ cells had entered the US at some time in the past but that ABC is running this story suggests that the intel on a possible cell is more than just idle chatter.

It means that we have to remain vigilant and I've got to put up with having my bag checked every few days by the good police officers of the Port Authority of NY/NJ because terrorists might try to take out the PATH system (again).

The White House has convened an urgent multi-agency meeting for Thursday afternoon to deal with the new threat.

This is Tuesday. If it was all that "urgent" they would be having the multi-agency meeting tonight or tomorrow.

After all this time, reorganization & billions spent, they really should not NEED an urgent meeting to deal with a "new threat." They should have been operating all along on the assumption that the threat was real and imminent.

The Reuters account mentions at least 3 Filipino soldiers killed, and otherwise matches that report. No mention of beheadings.

De présumés militants islamistes ont décapité quatre soldats philippins. Dix autres sont portés disparus, a annoncé mercredi l'armée. Ces militaires étaient à la recherche d'un prêtre italien enlevé il y a plus d'un mois.

That's the first line from your report.

IIRC all the 9/11 terrorists entered the U.S. legally and none came in through Canada. Some boarded a plane from Maine to get the connecting flight they eventually crashed, but that's as close as they came to the Canadian border.

‘Jerusalem, Israel’ Passport Ban Upheld in Canada
(IsraelNN.com) The Canadian policy of not allowing Canadian residents of Jerusalem to list their address as “Jerusalem, Israel” on their Canadian passports was upheld last week in the North American nation’s Federal court of Appeals.

The case was presented by 19-year-old Eliyahu Veffer, son of a Toronto rabbi, who demanded that he be allowed to list his place of residence as Jerusalem, Israel. The three-judge panel maintained that Veffer’s rights had not been violated. “There is no discrimination here,” said the court. “Veffer still maintains the freedom to express his faith and his subjectively held views as to the status of Jerusalem; he is just not able to do so in his Canadian passport.”

That's the basis for the Dem harangue in the Senate today. If the US stays in Iraq, they blame the GOP. If we pull out or weaken our support and the roof caves in on Iraq (Turkey, Iran, al-qaida, etc.), they blame the GOP. And if the Bush Administration has prevented another attack since 9/11, 1) you can't prove causality, and 2) Gore could have done the same without the combat losses and loss of international stature.

Of course, arresting Pelosi on her return from Syria would have been a better way to make this point.

97 sandbox  Tue, Jul 10, 2007 6:30:01pm

Take a look at article by Therdore Dalrimple titled: "Rational Discrimination"
which appears in today's NY Sun and in the LA Times.

[Link: www.nysun.com...]

I can't believe I am reading this:

And the plain fact of the matter is that British society could get by perfectly well without the contribution even of moderate Muslims. The only thing we really want from Muslims is their oil money for bank deposits, to prop up London property prices, and to sustain the luxury market. Their cheap labor that we imported in the 1960s in a vain effort to bolster the dying textile industry, which could not find local labor, is now redundant.

In other words, one of the achievements of the bombers and would-be bombers is to make discrimination against most Muslims who wish to enter Britain a perfectly rational policy. This is not to say that the government would espouse it, other than surreptitiously by giving secret directions to visa offices around the world. But why should a country take an unnecessary risk without a compensatory benefit?

Or is it just me that thinks this is a wholly gratuitous - and false - statement?

I noticed that--I was wondering why the AP would run such a piece and then when I got to that paragraph it all became clear.

I don't think it matters if there are Christian sects in Africa that do FGM or not--they want readers to see Christianity and Islam as moral equivalents.

O/T:Female genital mutilation becoming a problem in Britain

Has anyone noticed of late that every time there is an article on female genital mutilation it has become the norm to include the statement that "Christians do this too." I have never once heard of Christians anywhere in the world following this practice. Most denominations would entirely prohibit this practice. Or is it just me that thinks this is a wholly gratuitous - and false - statement?

I guess you haven't seen what happens to posters in the subway.

Of course, to a sane person that's not the same thing as something being done to a real live human--but since some people are talking about destroying a copy of a book as a "hate crime," I'm sure there are people who think that defacing the genital area of a hot babe on a subway poster is at least the moral equivalent, if not actually the same as, the actual practice of FGM.

Probably not Buzz. We don't have subways in Vermont.

ot -
If Olmert had any balls at all, he'd be sending Canada's ambassador packing. What benefit does Israel derive from friendly relations with Canada in the first place. Guaranteed, the Canadiens need Israeli technology much more the Israel needs anything from Canada.

Do you know where this animosity even began?

The Israeli's used stolen Canadian passports for the better part of a decade for operatives in the Mossad. They've never apologized for that.

Of course it is a sore point for Canadians, and the Canadian government in direct or indirect use of the Canadian passport in respect to the Israeli state.

Last I looked, Canadian territory did not include Jerusalem, Israel. It's a Canadian passport, and needs to reflect a Canadian place of residence for it to be a valid document.

It's like a US Muslim requesting that his place of residence be listed as Mecca. Think about how that would go over.

I was in Boston a few weeks back (first time in a couple of years) to take the kiddos to the USS Constitution, but we did not ride the subway.

I hate the Trutheresque quality of saying that "we haven't got the real/full story." But there were such rumors, originally from government sources--and the bomb was so very much like the bomb in WTC I.

I sometimes think that whatever connections that might exist were buried good and deep because a) McVeigh is useful for multicultists to wave around as a "Christian terrorist," b) the fact that the bombing was pulled off in the heartland makes the FBI et. al. look like a bunch of bozos, and c) it would show that the government has been willfully blind to the warnings of people like Steven Emerson for a very long time.

Buzz, this bombing wasn't just pulled off in the heartland. It was pulled off at the FEDERAL building - federal as in FBI regional headquarters.

I wasn't even thinking about 9/11. I was thinking about that huge unpopulated North Dakota border and the 20-odd-person cell that got busted in Toronto last year...

The 20 odd-person 'cell' that was busted in Toronto was home-grown. They had their roots in Canada, and intended to stir crap in Canada. Disaffected youth, with a religious bent.

CSIS had been following them around for quite a long time, and busted the cell when things starting getting weirdly dangerous. Up to that point it was just rhetoric in a suspect mosque, and a bunch of nut-bars running around with paint-ball guns in the north of Ontario.

They planned on obtaining arms, and pulling a 'group Rambo' against Canadian authorities if they went in after them in their 'territory' in Northern Ontario. One of their own was ratting them out from the inside.

It's up to the US to defend the ND border, not Canada.. we have our electronic sensors, you have yours, as well as manned patrols and arial surveillance.

Didn't you know? In the Progressive Universe, "non-progressives" are responsible for everything, up to and including the heat-death of the Universe.

I was thinking exactly the same thing. There is California and then there is California. Don't forget St. Jude in Memphis. They take kids from anywhere. Free. Well over half of everything that we know about leukemia came directly out of St. Jude. There are usually just two very important stipulations: they have to pay their own way to Memphis and the patient must not have been started on a treatment regimen elsewhere.

I still would like to know if there is substance behind the shadowy rumors that there was a Mohammedan hand behind Timothy McVeigh.

Me too. Is anyone still investigating this?

Yeh, But I can't remember her name. It was suppose to be Iraqi money. Tim was on his own and they just finaced it from what I remember.

I'm hard pressed to believe that any Muslim financed this operation. Don't Muslims love to brag about their exploits?

Not Iraqi at that time. We just kicked there ass. They didn't want another stomping.

Sorry Dustoff - when it comes to leukemia there is St. Jude, then there are 3 or 4 others in the entire country that are close but no cigar. ONE of those is in California. The decision to avoid naming the place of birth in relation to Jerusalem Israel is a wholly political one by many governments, the US included. They've refused to make what should be obvious to everyone the fact. Jerusalem is part of Israel, and has been since its creation. All of Jerusalem (East and West) came into Israeli possession after the Six Day War. Refusing to accept Jerusalem as Israel's capital is a blight on the foreign policy of many governments around the world, including the US, which refuses to move the embassy to Jerusalem as is befitting of a world capital.

I understand the feeling all too well. One of my nieces died of leukemia a few years back - a very rare form. But no Mama, you could not handle it so much better than a 6 year old. For starters, she is 6 and female, so unless she has some pretty unusual type of leukemia she has as good a chance of surviving this as it gets - much better than if she were older and much better than if she were male.

You would be dumbfounded at how well even very small children handle this.

The video had Gov. Keating acknowledging that bombs were still in the building and showed bomb squads on site to remove them.

Where are these reports now? I can't say, but I attest to what I say right after the fact.

They tried to say they were training bombs for the squads. Except the dogs were the ones who found them.

Jayna Davis has piles of great evidence to back up her claim, but nothing is as powerful as visual evidence.

Behold!
The third Oklahoma City terrorist sketch and Jose Padilla, the "dirty" bomber.

Jayna makes a very strong argument, and firmly bellieves, that John Doe #2 (the third terrorist) was an ex-Iraqi intelligence officer who came to the US and OKC as a "refugee" after the Gulf War. Also, the books presents fairly massive evidence that the OKC bombing was funded by al-Qaida out of Manila through Khalid Shaikh Mohammed and Ramzi Yousef. The inference is clear that Clinton and Janet Reno chose not to pursue the Iraq/AQ connection in order to 1)blame domestic right wing extremists, and 2) avoid going to war with Iraq. Her point is that McVey and Nichols were "lily whites" hired by the Islamic terrorists. Her evidence details Nichols trips to Manila, meeting with Yousef and his associates, and even Yousef's logbook in Manila showing "Nick" as signing in during a very short period of one of Nichols' visits to the Philippines.

My biggest disappointment in the Bush administration, is in their not taking Clinton to task on OKC.

Just read the book.

Dustoff, I understand your allegiance to your state. California does have some darned good hospitals. But all hospitals are not created equal for all things. Some specialize in hearts or kidneys - or leukemia. You have just exactly one hospital in all of California that I would send my own child to be treated at if I could not get her into St. Jude. I say that as a medical professional who has dealt with the issue for years, as a mother who has had to deal with a life-threatening illness in one of my children for more than a decade, and the sister of a woman who lost her only grandchild to an exceedingly rare leukemia and has never been the same.

There is no BUT about it.

re: #209 Midwestprof

I apologize, I never read the instructions on the passport. When you fill out the application, they ask for place of birth. It is to fill out State and Country, or City and Country if not born in the US. If you write Jerusalem Israel, on an American application (and apparently in Canada as well) it will be changed to Jerusalem.

This is so the issuing country does not have to recognize that Jerusalem is in Israel.

You can write out anything you want after it is issued, but officially they have taken Jerusalem and turned it into its own city/state.

According to the paper, Ibrahim and Shahzad Tanweer attended the camp in Manserah, in a remote area near the Kashmir border, between December 2004 and January 2005.

The training centre is run by Harkat ul-Mujaheddin, a group that was involved in the kidnap and beheading of The Wall Street Journal reporter Daniel Pearl in 2002 and which trains fighters operating alongside the Taliban in Afghanistan.

The man who organised the kidnapping of Pearl was another British-born Muslim, Omar Saeed Sheikh, who had joined the Harkat.

Security sources say, however, they have not found a link between Sheikh on one side and Tanweer and Ibrahim on the other.

Eritrea-born Ibrahim, who has convictions for theft, indecent assault on a minor and attempted robbery, had spent three years at a young offenders institution before turning to religion.

In May, the men who went on to take part in the 21/7 plot went to a training camp in Cumbria along with a group of other young Muslims. All of them appeared in surveillance photographs taken by MI5 and the police.

Weird...just got a phone call from a phone-bank at the Red Cross, asking for a blood donation...never heard of that being done before --'cept in great emergencies, then it usually goes out over the radio & such... ?

Is there something going on I've not heard about?

(I've never donated blood, so I know I'm not on any special list...)

I have never heard of that being done either Ma Sands - even in great emergencies. Red Cross appeals go out over the TV & radio - or in the paper. I would be very cautious of this. Remember to never give out personal information over the phone - even to the "Red Cross."

According to Jayna Davis's source, Dr. Oscar Coronel, Chief, Intelligence Division, Philippine Immigration Bureau, Nichols returned to the US (earlier than planned) on 1/6/95, the day of the fire in Yousef's Manila apartment. A computer that was left in the apartment led to the discovery of Operation Bojinka (the plan to blow up US bound aircraft over the Pacific) and the arrest of Yousef in Pakistan several weeks later.

Thank you for your comments. I have spent some time researching the terminology because most of the time the usage drives me crazy. So many overused/misused/obfustating terms. Examples: 'linked', (any of a series of rings or loops making up a chain) as in linked to AQ vice 'affliated' (member or branch) , 'terrorist' (exactly what is one and does it matter as to the distinction between affiliation or linkage?), 'militant' (at war, ready to fight), 'insurgent' (rising up against authority, rebellious), 'islamist' (a member of Islam, the Muslim religion),' moderate' (within bounds, restrain, within reasonable limits), religion of peace (uhmm, see Spencer) ... etc.
I love the dictionary.

re: #308 Cognito

Just curious -- do you guys feel there's any form of Islamaphobia. That is, any irrational fear of Muslims?

Lets say that every time I met a dog that dog bit me. I don't think that it would take too many bites before I would learn that dogs are dangerous. I would go out of my way not to be around them - and I might shoot one if it came near me, on the very reasonable premise that the dog was likely to bite me. Is that a "phobia?" Of course not. That is a perfectly reasonable and ration fear. No substitute "muslim."

Is there such a thing as "islamophobia" ? Of course not. What is completely irrational is for those of muslim persuasion to go around screaming aloha snackbar, beheading people, blowing up pizza parlors full of children, pushing each other off buildings, gang raping, stoning, threatening to kill every Jew and all "infidels" and raging every single time they THINK somebody said something offensive (never mind their own offense) and THEN having the sheer gall and balls to DEMAND that they be treated not just equally but better than everyone else.

If Olmert had any balls at all, he'd be sending Canada's ambassador packing. What benefit does Israel derive from friendly relations with Canada in the first place. Guaranteed, the Canadiens need Israeli technology much more the Israel needs anything from Canada.

First of all, it is Canadians, not Canadiens.. the Canadiens is a Hockey team, now defunct. You can't even get the plural of the country correct, and you wish to Eff us? Ignorant.

So the Supreme Court says "that the plaintiff's request to have listed as his "current" address as Jerusalem, Israel is invalid.. what is the problem here? It isn't diplomatically recognised by most countries in the world as being in Israels legal possession! Until it is, it is an invalid street address to be put on a legal passport! As i read this, it indicates that the Supreme Courts issue is not with the place of birth, but the Canadian Passports holder's resident place of address! It's a legality, not only in Canada, but by Passport protocols. Please note to Americans, referencing your own passport for this info may yield erroneous information. The US does not issue Passports to Canadians, Canada issues passports to Canadians. Your information on your passports may be differently listed.

[Link: www.ppt.gc.ca...]

The issue is with the plaintiff's wish to put down Jeruselum, Israel as "Address of Permanent Residence", not place of birth. It's not a diplomatically recognised address, nothing more, nothing less.

I was erroneous in my assertion "Last I looked, Canadian territory did not include Jerusalem, Israel. It's a Canadian passport, and needs to reflect a Canadian place of residence for it to be a valid document." I don't know where the hell that came from.

The Canadian Supreme court simply ruled in the favor of common sense, in terms of diplomatic protocol. I fail to see how your American sensitivities have been insulted.

And no, unrelated to this court issue, the Canadian government has not been as close to Israel as the US is, due to the previously mentioned improper passport issue with Israel's Mossad.

Mossad put the Canadian State, and indeed each Canadian individual at risk by mis-using passport documentation in the course of nefarious activities. That is a grave misuse of credentials by a foreign power, no matter what that foreign power is.

So if they manage to pull off another attack, can we finally find out how much heat has to be generated to melt the Meccan moonrock. I mean really, can we maybe entertain the notion that Islam might have something to do with terrorism and start bombing all of those buildings with the shiney christmas ornament looking things on the roof.

Not according to the EU.

Yesterday was the first time we had a squirrel on our balcony railing. He was acting as if he was eating the bird seed, but spent a lot of time watching us through the window. He seemed foreign, awkward with the local squirrel mannerisms.
Coincidence? Question the timing.

Don't worry...I'm keeping an eye on the squirrel ummah. We police our own.

You think he trained in Pakistan?

That's the million dollar question. Was he seething about the raid on the red mosque? Did he burn Musharraf in effigy? I have my best people on it, but these things take time.

Squirrel-phobia overtook me in Alaska once -- I will admit I got carried away when the squirrel ummah would not stop chewing through the logs of my cabin. (nasty little infiltrators.) So I shot their leader, had him stuffed, put a hook on his hand an eyepatch on him and set him on the mantle. The infiltrations stopped after that.

Morocco holds 15 Qaeda suspects

RABAT: Moroccan police have detained 15 Al Qaeda suspected members who were plotting to blow up sensitive targets in the North African country, a newspaper reported on Tuesday.

The main Arabic daily Al Massa, quoting security sources, said four of the 15 suspects came from Al Qaeda’s base in Algeria and had sneaked into Morocco to prepare “dangerous and sophisticated” terror attacks. Morocco, citing an intelligence warning of an imminent attack, last week raised its security alert to the highest level and deployed more than 5,000 police and paramilitary gendarmes to guard strategic points.

Assabah, another Arabic daily, said separately that a Moroccan anti-terrorist police squad had arrested three Al Qaeda suspects who were preparing bomb attacks in Morocco. The newspaper said the three were detained after a French intelligence tip-off that they intended to link up with other Al Qaeda members from Algeria and Mauritania and carry out attacks in Morocco. Asked to comment, an Interior Ministry official said: “We are only aware of the arrest of 13 Syrians who came from Algeria illegally to try to reach Spain. They are illegal migrants”.

Let us take the bait. It is not "fear of Islam" as Islamophobia would suggest. But, "dismissiveness" (sic), distrust, disdain, or genuine despising of Islam.

Find a better mousetrap than Islamophobia.

Try "MisIslamistism" or "misa[bigoted word]" or something else that conveys a genuine hatred like real words "misanthropy" and "misogyny" do. Choose your neologism - Misadesertscrewingcameldonger" might one day suffice. These words do not fear any individual practitioner of Islam. But as a group, we might join hands with the campus feminists, linguists, English profs and leftists and come to a similar general conclusion.

Secret Document: U.S. Fears Terror 'Spectacular' Planned

A secret U.S. law enforcement report, prepared for the Department of Homeland Security, warns that al Qaeda is planning a terror "spectacular" this summer, according to a senior official with access to the document.

"This is reminiscent of the warnings and intelligence we were getting in the summer of 2001," the official told ABCNews.com.

...

Unlike the United States, officials in Germany have publicly warned that the country could face a major attack this summer, also comparing the situation to the pre-9/11 summer of 2001.

Oh for F%ck's Christ's SOME THING'S sake. Didn't we have the religious debate a few posts ago? This pointless bickering back and forth about who worships correctly or if at all is seriously starting to remind me of another group of sh!t heads... what are they called again?

Oh yeah... that's right... the Sunnis and the Shiites.

Give it a rest. If you're a follower of the church, I implore you to remember that its your faith and your compassion towards your fellow man, not necessarily your actions come prayer time, that will get you into heaven. If you're not a follower of the church, I invite you to remember Oriana Fallaci, who held herself as a Christian atheist, meaning that while she did not believe in a God per se, she felt that the teachings of Christ were worth believing in.

And if you're a member of one of the other countless religions not mentioned in this rant, I leave you to your own devices on how to be a decent human being, and contribute to this great nation of ours.

A modern day Vlad Tepes, you are. Obviously, you need some indoctrination training from the Council on American-Squirrel Relations (CASR).

Stop the hate...or we'll seethe (and eat your log cabins).

currently i'm on hiatus from it (medical reasons) but it's a great way to indulge in my hobbies as well as support a worthy cause. Also got my mother into it -- which gives us a great way to stay in touch and keep the bond strong.

www.projectlinus.org for any crafty Lizards who might be interested in putting extra quilts / afghans / hand-tied fleece throws to a very good use!

i've also been contacted by one outfit that allegedly provides a similar service for convalescing soldiers, but i haven't checked them out (they wanted money, not blankets...)

It would be nice if there was a similar outfit for soldiers - or if we could start our own. My Dad is a WWII vet, gets his care at the biggest, newest vet hospital in the country. He calls me in tears every time he has to go in to the main hospital. We are saving more of our injured soldiers than has ever been done in the past, but lots of them have some pretty horrific injuries.

there are several i can think of off the top of my head (with or without squirrel pelt Davy crockett hat)

the one i give $$ to is "Help Hospitalized Veterans" -- it provides craft kits to soldiers & vets to give them something to do while recovering -- especially if they've lost mobility it can help the healing and the getting used to a prosthesis.

i endorse it because i lived w/ a terminally ill disabled AF vet for the last two years of her life and watched her crochet up a storm of afghans (this before 9/11 of course) so i know that it works.

Unlike the Troofer Morons, I recall the high alert status in the summer of 2001, when an attack was anticipated, but where was not known.   A week later the World Trade Center was gone.

The Troofers are well aware of the memo in July/August of 2001, but they seem to think it gave the date, time and operational details of the 9/11 attacks. It was very vague and had no actionable intelligence (i.e. something you could actually do something about). They use this fact and President Bush's 7 minute pause while reading My Pet Goat as "proof" that the administration new all about the attack and did nothing. Reading comprehension skills are beyond them, apparently.

Took them YEARS to realize something was wrong, and by the time the figured out WHAT, the USSR spy network was so badly compromised it would have cost a year's GDP for USSR to replace it!

Helped catalyze the collapse of USSR!

Close the boarders NOW!

Oopsy. Too late.

I've been seeing them for years. The year after 911, I was camping in San Diego... Campland on the Bay and there were 8 single middle eastern men camping in our row. I was walking the dog and they gave me dirty looks. Some were dressed like imams the rest looked normal. The trailer next to ours was playing that whiny Arab music.

Another time a friend of ours was hosting a Turkish student at their home. Come to find out they were going back and forth across the Mexican border in a taxi. I reported that one to the FBI.

San Diego is full of terrorists and there is a mosque in the Clairemont area ( where one of the 911 perps came from) that has influenced the area so you don't recognize it anymore. Even the local college is hosting 'Islamic Awareness' clubs. Half the students wear the hajab. Even WalMart has employees wearing a black veil over the face.

Tell me they aren't here.

I am guessing that someone at IsraelNN.com misunderstood, or did not translate the words correctly. The reason this is news, is because the guy just lost a suit against the Canadian Department of State. I dont think that it is new. I am also not aware of any country that lists Jerusalem Israel as a place of birth (Costa Rica may the exception but I think they changed too).

I don't know what the true story is either - i can only surmise, not having a passport in hand to 'interpret' what the story is saying.

My apologies to Lizard-land for my blast-off at 'Biff'.. I get defensive when people start using urban legends to point blame at Canada for 9/11, and i get pissed when people use the "blame Canada" or "Eff Canada" crap in an ignorant fashion.. just because we don't see eye to eye on all issues, doesn't mean such an attitude is warranted. We've lost 11 soldiers in Afganistan in the past month alone, and for our committment in replacing US soldiers in that country so that they may concentrate on Iraq, it's an insulting attitude to have towards a country that is allied with the US on that front. I'm in the minority of Canadians who support our mission in Afganistan, not one of the ones screaming to be pulled out.

Again, my apologies. I'll try to hold my (virtual) tongue next time.

What is irrational about it?

Just curious -- do you guys feel there's any form of Islamaphobia. That is, any irrational fear of Muslims?

I suppose one could postulate a theoretical islamophobia, wherein the sufferer would get a case of the screaming meemies every time he or she so much as saw a muslim in traditional garb.

A phobia is normally defined as an irrational and excessive fear of something, IIRC. But expressing concern over the excesses of radical islam, or displaying a healthy distaste for certain of the nasty passages in the koran, is certainly not phobic.

For those who pray, could you send one up for this family? He is a lovely Korean man who came to this country for his theological training at Trinity Divinity School outside Chicago, and then enlisted in the US Army. Motorcycle vs. Squirrel Part 1

I never dreamed slowly cruising on my motorcycle through a residential
neighborhood could be so incredibly dangerous! Little did I suspect...

I was on Brice Street - a very nice neighborhood with perfect lawns and
slow traffic. As I passed an oncoming car, a brown furry missile shot out
from under it and tumbled to a stop immediately in front of me. It was a
squirrel, and must have been trying to run across the road when it
encountered the car.

I really was not going very fast, but there was no time to brake or avoid
it - it was that close. I hate to run over animals, and I really hate it on
a motorcycle, but a squirrel should pose no danger to me.

I barely had time to brace for the impact. Animal lovers, never fear.

Squirrels, I discovered, can take care of themselves!

Inches before impact, the squirrel flipped to his feet. He was standing on
his hind legs and facing my oncoming Valkyrie with steadfast resolve in his
little beady eyes. His mouth opened, and at the last possible second, he
screamed and leapt!

I am pretty sure the scream was squirrel for, "Bonzai!" or maybe,"Die you
gravy-sucking, heathen scum!" The leap was nothing short of
spectacular...as he shot straight up, flew over my windshield, and impacted
me squarely in the chest.

Instantly, he set upon me. If I did not know better, I would have sworn he
brought 20 of his little buddies along for the attack. Snarling, hissing
and tearing at my clothes, he was a frenzy of activity. As I was dressed
only in a light t-shirt,summer riding gloves, and jeans this was a bit of a
cause for concern.

This furry little tornado was doing some damage! Picture a large man on a
huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a t-shirt, and leather
gloves, puttering at maybe 25 mph down a quiet residential street, and in
the fight of his life with a squirrel. And losing...

I grabbed for him with my left hand. After a few misses,I finally managed
to snag his tail.

With all my strength, I flung the evil rodent off to the left of the bike,
almost running into the right curb I recoiled from the throw. That should
have done it.

The matter should have ended right there. It really should have. The
squirrel could have sailed into one of the pristinely kept yards and gone
on about his business, and I could have headed home. No one would have been
the wiser.

But this was no ordinary squirrel. This was not even an ordinary pissed-off
squirrel.

This was an EVIL MUTANT ATTACK SQUIRREL OF DEATH!

Somehow he caught my gloved finger with one of his little hands and, with
the force of the throw, swung around and with a resounding thump and an
amazing impact, he landed squarely on my back and resumed his rather
anti-social and extremely distracting activities. He also managed to take
my left glove with him!

The situation was not improved. Not improved at all.

His attacks were continuing, and now I could not reach him.

I was startled to say the least. The combination of the force of the throw,
only having one hand (the throttle hand) on the handlebars, and my jerking
back unfortunately put a healthy twist through my right hand and into the
throttle. A healthy twist on the throttle of a Valkyrie can only have one
result. Torque. This is what the Valkyrie is made for, and she is very,
very good at it. The engine roared and the front wheel left the pavement.

The squirrel screamed in anger The Valkyrie screamed in ecstasy. I screamed
in...well ...I just plain screamed.

Now picture a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in
jeans, a slightly squirrel-torn-t-shirt, wearing only one leather glove,
and roaring at maybe 50 mph and rapidly accelerating down a quiet
residential street on one wheel and with a demonic squirrel on his back.
The man and the squirrel are both screaming bloody murder. With the sudden
acceleration I was forced to put my other hand back on the handlebars and
try to get control of the bike.

620 azpatriot  Tue, Jul 10, 2007 8:47:23pm

Motorcycle vs Squirrel Part 2

This was leaving the mutant squirrel to his
own devices, but I really did not want to crash into somebody's tree,
house, or parked car. Also, I had not yet figured out how to release the
throttle ... my brain was just simply overloaded.

I did manage to mash the back brake, but it had little effect against the
massive power of the big cruiser. About this time the squirrel decided that
I was not paying sufficient attention to this very serious battle (maybe he
is an evil mutant NAZI attack squirrel of death), and he came around my
neck and got INSIDE my full-face helmet with me. As the faceplate closed
partway, he began hissing in my face.

I am quite sure my screaming changed intensity. It had little effect on the
squirrel, however.

The RPMs on The Dragon maxed out (since I was not bothering with shifting
at the moment) so her front end started to drop. Now picture a large man on
a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed in jeans, a very raggedly-torn
t-shirt,wearing only one leather glove, roaring at probably 80 mph, still
on one wheel, with a large puffy squirrel's tail sticking out of the mostly
closed full-face helmet.

By now the screams are probably getting a little hoarse. Finally I got the
upper hand ...

I managed to grab his tail again, pulled him out of my helmet, and slung
him to the left as hard as I could.

This time it worked ... sort-of. Spectacularly sort-of ... so to speak.

Picture a new scene. You are a cop. You and your partner have pulled off on
a quiet residential street and parked with your windows down to do some
paperwork. Suddenly a large man on a huge black and chrome cruiser, dressed
in jeans, a torn t-shirt flapping in the breeze, and wearing only one
leather glove, moving at probably 80 mph on one wheel, and screaming bloody
murder roars by and with all his strength throws a live squirrel grenade
directly into your police car.

I heard screams They weren't mine... I managed to get the big motorcycle
under control and dropped the front wheel to the ground.

I then used maximum braking and skidded to a stop in a cloud of tire smoke
at the stop sign of a busy cross street. I would have returned to fess up
(and to get my glove back). I really would have. Really.

Except for two things. First, the cops did not seem interested or the
slightest bit concerned about me at the moment. When I looked back, the
doors on both sides of the patrol car were flung wide open.

The cop from the passenger side was on his back, doing a crab walk into
somebody's front yard, quickly moving away from the car.

The cop who had been in the driver's seat was standing in the street and
was aiming a riot shotgun at his own police car.

So the cops were not interested in me. They often insist to "let the
professionals handle it" anyway. That was one thing. The other?

Well,I could clearly see shredded and flying pieces of foam and upholstery
from the back seat. But I could also swear I saw the squirrel in the back
window, shaking his little fist at me, shooting me the finger .. That is
one dangerous squirrel. And now he has a patrol car.

A somewhat shredded patrol car ... but it was all his.

I took a deep breath, turned on my turn-signal, made a gentle right turn
off of Brice Street, and sedately left the neighborhood.

I decided it was best to just buy myself a new pair of gloves. And some
Band-Aids

From reading the article and seeing the past month, I have come to one conclusion.

When they say "harden security for government buildings and personnel." I think that means, "What can we do to build a border fence...

...AROUND D.C."

I think the message is clear. They want to protect themselves, and screw the rest of the country. If they really cared for NATIONAL security we would have had our borders closed on 9-12-01.

I should not be shocked, yet I am. The only answer I have as to why they would "dump" this story on their blog is that it doesn't fit with their leftist meme. That is shameful! Our Founding Fathers were depending on an informed electorate. Today's msm has stabbed them in the back. Not only do they not inform, they actually give a voice to our enemies.

I was a little nervous after the first season of Showtime's miniseries Sleeper Cell, it seemed too real for comfort... especially when compared to 24, etc.. there was nothing in it that left you feeling good or confident.
Then I had to watch Season Two, and alternated between seething and freaking out for a week or two after. The story of the cell members, here in the US and planning terror on a huge scale, is perfectly believable, and therefore perfectly horrifying. Watching, you're left with the sense that they're here, and they're as bad as we've been told.
Worse, maybe.

Top intelligence and law enforcement officials have been told to assemble in the Situation Room

What's a "Situation Room"? I think I want one on my house!

The next thing I would like is for the government to do some serious investigation of the Muslim camps (like that one in Virginia) that have been popping up across the country. From what I have read, they violate health codes if nothing else.

You must not live near DC.
It is almost completely encircled by a 30 feet high concrete wall.
Noise - all for blocking out noise, for neighborhoods that frequently vote Dem, but the US Libs didn't want the Israelis to put up the exact same thing to block out suicide bombers.

It is discouraging - essentially we are all on the same page.

Extremism, and nationalism however, has no place in this fight. It's not about US vs Canada, or assigning blame, or looking for a scapegoat.

What is in the past, is the past. We need to deal with the present, to ward off what may come in the future. Back-stabbing each other as allies, in comments or actions, is counter-productive.

It also discourages discourse on forums like this, where supposedly those posting are adults. We all have a difference of opinion to some degree or another - one shouldn't have to fear being bludgeoned by someone with an opinion that is offensive on a personal level.

682 Biff  Wed, Jul 11, 2007 8:10:03am

The backstabbing is Canada's refusal to recognize Jerusalem, Israel. Historically, to the present, it is one of the oldest capitals in the world, the capital of Yisrael. The arab/muslim world has no claim to Jerusalem. Try to find it in the q'uran.

If they want to, they will.

Close the border, yes...but they are already here...probably for years.

The next one will change everything. The "average" American will not take it anymore...we are all willing to accommodate, but only to a point and if and when another attack comes down, we will no longer accommodate...illegals, anti-Americans, the Congress, the White House, the apologists, the Islamofacists and their mosques...

Get ready...it will happen if the attack comes.

They forgot to remember that you have to be CIVIL to get CIVIL Liberties...and that citizenship means something.

Haven't followed this entire thread...

However, NATIONALISM is what it is all about or we would all be the same. There is no shame in nationalism, sovereignty, or the like. My ancestors were Canadian. I am not. I am American. You are nice people. You are not American. You are good, but we are better.

You may think the opposite...and that is OK, as you state: We all have a difference of opinion to some degree or another - one shouldn't have to fear being bludgeoned by someone with an opinion that is offensive on a personal level.

But don't think we really are the same. What principles founded our country are different then the principles that founded your country. That is OK and we can still get along.

You are right, we don't need to blame each other. We need to accept responsibility for our own shortcomings. Plenty to go around. But American nationalism is not one of them...
