-RetweetWednesday Afternoon Open Thread

Wed, Jul 11, 2007 at 12:30:44 pm PDT

Here’s an open thread for a hump day afternoon.

And since tech threads always turn into open threads anyway, here’s another bit of info that might be interesting to Javascript geeks. I mentioned that I’ve been working with the jQuery Javascript library to do the ‘slide down’ special effects in our commenting engine; but it does a lot more than fancy eye candy. Here’s an example showing how much time and code the library can save.

If you’re not logged in, the little buttons that activate the ‘reply’ and ‘quote’ features on the top line of each comment are hidden. So if you’re on a page containing comments and you log in, the commenting engine needs to go through all the existing comments, and make the ‘reply’ and ‘quote’ links visible.

Before jQuery, this was the code that showed those links; to find them, each set of reply/quote links is wrapped in a <span> tag that has the CSS class ‘replylink.’ First, since there’s no native Javascript function to find all elements with a certain class, we need a special function:

function getElementsByClass(searchClass, node, tag) {
  var classElements = new Array();
  if ( node == null )
    node = document;
  if ( tag == null )
    tag = '*';
  var els = node.getElementsByTagName(tag);
  var elsLen = els.length;
  var pattern = new RegExp('(^|\\s)'+searchClass+'(\\s|$)');
  for (i = 0, j = 0; i < elsLen; i++) {
    if ( pattern.test(els[i].className) ) {
      classElements[j] = els[i];
      j++;
    }
  }
  return classElements;
}

The code to actually show the elements calls this function, then loops through the results, setting the ‘display’ property for each one so that it becomes visible.

var theReplylinks = getElementsByClass('replylink');
for (var i = 0; i < theReplylinks.length; i++) {
  theReplylinks[i].style.display = 'inline';
}

Now here’s the cool part. Using jQuery to show all the ‘replylink’ elements on the page reduces all this code down to one—count it, one—simple line:

$('.replylink').show();

That ends our geek exploration of the day. The thread is now open...

I understand the FBI and the authorities doing that, but just for once, a little FOAD from the media would be nice.

Hmm. There seems to be an unfortunate interaction between our code-formatting CSS, and the show new comments feature. Removed the code temporarily while I sort it out.

I finally figured this out yesterday. I read LGF frequently from work, but rarely post. However, earlier in the week I noticed that I did not have the "reply/quote" options on my screen. Then yesterday, I realized I wasn't logged in. When I logged in, they appeared. At home, I'm logged in automatically so I don't always think of a connection with being logged in and some of the new features.

OT - (is there a T?)

Anyway, Little Winger came home last night and said that someone at the country club where he works offered him an all-inclusive week at a resort in VietNam next month. Apparently they had booked the vacation, but their son is coming home on leave from Iraq then and they can't use it or cancel. So he wants to take me.

Only thing is, we would have to pay airfare, which looks like about $2500 a piece, so I don't think we can swing it.

I don't know how I feel about vacationing in VietNam anyway.

A routine research visit to the British Museum nets a landmark archaeological discovery and proof of the Old Testament's truth

wow
...Upon reading the tablet, which records a donation of gold by "the chief eunuch of King Nebuchadnezzar," a man named Nabu-sharrussu-ukin, Jursa suddenly realized that the name sounded familiar. He quickly consulted Jeremiah 39, where he found the man's name listed as one of Nebuchadnezzar's top ministers who took part in the destruction of the First Holy Temple 2,500 years ago. The Biblical account, however, has his named spelled slightly differently:

DC Madam talk is all the conversation in DC.

Brace Yourself.

I was just told Dick Cheney, while CEO of Halliburton, used her services regularly, they are trying to spin up a message to explain that members of his staff, in his offices, used this service to entertain foreign clients.

Apparently several of his ex-staff at Halliburton are already being besieged by calls.

I had not thought of that Granada. Of course you must be right there. But again - that was 1492 as I recall. That would be a pretty good chunk of the entire population of the Iberian Peninsula. Man sentenced for lying in Hamas case

CHICAGO - A Chicago medical van driver accused by federal prosecutors of funneling money to Mideast terrorists was sentenced Wednesday to 21 months in federal prison for lying in a civil lawsuit.

Muhammad Salah, 54, also was ordered to pay a $25,000 fine and do 100 hours of community service.

"Telling the truth is the bedrock of our judicial system, and a slap on the wrist will not provide a deterrent," U.S. District Judge Amy St. Eve said in sentencing Salah. He has until Oct. 11 to surrender and begin his sentence.

Salah was convicted in February of lying under oath in a civil lawsuit concerning the murder in Israel of a teenager by Hamas terrorists.

US delivers two F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan

The United States has delivered two F-16 fighter jets to Pakistan and will hand over another 24 shortly, the US Embassy said Wednesday.

Pakistan received the two planes Tuesday at a ceremony at an air base in the western city of Sargodha attended by US Ambassador Anne Patterson and senior Pakistani and US air force officials.

The 26 aircraft, provided by the US Air Force, will join 34 F-16s already in Pakistan's armory, the statement said. They are separate from an order for 18 new F-16 signed last September.

The delivery "symbolizes the US intent to remain engaged with Pakistan over the long term, just as we do with any other important ally and friend," Patterson said at the ceremony.

The George W. Bush administration approved the sale of the 18 new jets last year. The package included an option for Pakistan to order more jets and to get used aircraft refurbished.

Tammy Bruce:
Another "Grand Bargain", Another Massive Failure
Just as the Amnesty Bill was dubbed a "Grand Bargain," we have another example of what happens when you compromise to reach a consensus--you agree on the lowest common denominator. With the immigration issue, it was open borders, stomping on the Rule of Law and rewarding 20 million illegal squatters with amnesty.

Now, the issue is Iraq. And what will a depraved "Grand Bargain" get us this time? Not an agreement to finally face down the enemy. Not even an agreement simply to dispatch singular enemy leadership like Muqtada al-Sadr. Nope, true to form, the Iraq Grand Bargain is all about the legacy of the Left: surrender and retreat. This time as facilitated by the biggest frightened "Please Like Me" liberal of them all--George W. Bush.

The New York Times leads today with David Sanger's story, "In White House, Debate Is Rising On Iraq Pullback; Political Considerations; Not Waiting For Sept. 15, Aides Seek to Forestall G.O.P. Defections." The piece is tendentious, as one would expect--but THE WEEKLY STANDARD has confirmed that there are real discussions going on at the White House, with advocates of what is being called "The Grand Bargain" pushing hard for the president to move soon to announce plans to pull back in Iraq. So this week will not only be a week of (mostly silly) debate on the Hill; it will also be an important moment of truth for the president, who will have to decide whether to give Gen. Petraeus and the soldiers a chance, or to accept the counsel of some of his advisers and begin to throw in the towel on Iraq.

Let me be clear: The president ordered the "surge," which only recently came to full strength and whose major operation has been going on for less than a month. If he were not to give it a chance to work, he would properly be viewed as a feckless, irresolute president, incapable of seeing his own strategy through a couple of months of controversy before abandoning it. He will have asked our soldiers to go on the offensive, assuming greater risk of casualties--and then, even though the offensive is working better than expected, will have pulled the plug on their efforts.

Indeed, the White House is living in a fool's paradise if they imagine that "compromising" now and in this way buys them anything...

Uh, Newsflash for Bill Kristol: The "surge" will only work if our troops actually had orders to do something other than be Crossing Guards, Body-Finders, and Dodgers of Car Bombs. Kristol's article is the sort of tripe you get from the "he's my president, right or wrong" crowd, incapable, or unwilling, to admit the truth and present it to you accordingly.

And when it comes to General Petraeus--he's now using Vietnam War analogies when referring to what to expect in Iraq. A "Mini-Tet Offensive" is what he said would could expect in the next few weeks. That's terrific--let's use the name for an event which signaled the final and irreversible rejection by the American people of the Vietnam War. All because Walter Cronkite, despite our overwhelming win of that battle, wanted the American people to believe otherwise.

Great job, Petraeus. Absolute, stunning genius at giving leftists exactly what they want--a return to the days when self-loathing cowards in media lied about our troops and our work in that God-forsaken country. And now you bring that lie right into the middle of what our troops are doing today. There's a reason why Bush chose Patraeus folks, just like why he chose Chertoff for Homeland Security--because they will passionately implement the president's Mister Rogers-like foreign and domestic policy.

The problem which Kristol doesn't seem to grasp, is that in order for the "surge" to work, there has to be a mission for the troops in the surge. There isn't one. And no, in a war theatre being a massive Neighborhood Watch program doesn't effing count.

If Cheney is on the DC Madams list:

We have already established that adultery, for that matter, lying under oath while being deposed, lying under oath to a Federal grand jury, and encouraging perjury among Federal employees isn't an impeachable offense.

Plus, Cheney has 18 months left in office, and at his age, he isn't running for anything again.

So, even if true, so what? Now, Senator Vitter did such a fine job shutting down the Kennedy-Bush McCain Open Borders Act, it is a little sad, that since he is a Republican, and thus held accountable for his behavior (see Bill Clinton, Ted Kennedy, Barney Frank, Jerry Studds, William Jefferson as counter-examples), his political career is in jeopardy.

Yesterday a heard a soundbite of Hillary Clinton saying something to the effect "there are no military solutions in Iraq." Of course, this misses the point. The real question is whether there are any reasonable solutions that do not involve military force. Even if there is no exclusively military solution in Iraq, that does not imply that a significant military effort is not required. Taken at face value, the "no military solution" mantra would imply that Iraq has no need of an Army, counter insurgency force, or national police force. Apparently all they need is smiling and friendly diplomats who do not like George Bush.

Obviously there must be some diplomatic and political accomplishments in Iraq before our enterprise there can be considered a success. But to fail to recognize the necessity of dedicated military capacity in a contested Iraq suggests a naivete unbecoming in one who aspires to executive office.

But the reason for Zawahiri’s recent desperate recruiting drive is the fact that AQ values in action have turned local people against them. Some Rudeness for general amusement...

Dear Religious Right: Give It Up:
Let's explain this clearly to all the deluded religious bags of nuts out there who cling to their destructive versions of sexual morality: if you're a guy who goes to a prostitute, there's only a few reasons (other than the obvious "not gettin' it at home" excuse). You go to a hooker because you can be reasonably sure the hooker's not gonna talk to the press. You just have to make sure you pay that hooker enough for the sex and for the silence. Another reason you go to a whore is because, for the negotiated amount of time and limits (maybe no cutting, nothing that permanently damages the merchandise), you fuckin' own that bitch. That means you get to live out your most crazed, perverted fantasies. Sure, sure, you might just like the usual, plain...[deleted]...You might want someone who'll [Rudeness].

So, sweet fundamentalists who cling to family values candidates like scared children to Chinese-made stuffed animals, while you're abstractedly thinking about Republican Senator David Vitter visiting an escort service, regularly, your highly-regarded moral champion wasn't just unzipping his fly to quickly bang an escort under her skirt because of some forgivable male urges. No, no, chances are that Vitter was bare ass naked, face down and tied to bedposts, while a high-priced whore [Rudeness].

How many more fuckin' times are we gonna go through this same pathetic charade with presumptive leaders for the religious right? For moral values supporters? How many more men, for indeed, can anyone name a powerful woman brought down in a sex scandal recently? How many hypocritical Ted Haggards and Newt Gingriches and Mark Foleys and David Vitters, all, all, all men that the religious right counted on to lead them to the promised land of political power, to keep those homosexuals down, to punish Bill Clinton, to make abstinence and anti-abortion policies the rule of the country? How many more men who make a show of deep faith who are just assholes who wanna get their rocks off? Vitter is sooo fuckin' proud to be Catholic, that his kids are Catholic, that one imagines the confession booth at his church is filled with the echoes of Vitter telling his priest about how many rim jobs he got from his hooker.

When do we get to act like a nation of grown-ups where we can say, "You know, I don't give a fuck if my candidate likes to have his nutsack stomped by a cross-dressed male hooker in stiletto heels as long as he supports my issues"? And where those issues can be shit like war and education and health care and not bullshit like who's fucking who and for what reasons?

Welcome back to what it means to be human, David Vitter. Your constituents in Louisiana oughta learn that it means you love the fucking, just like nearly every one of them.

I caught just the last few minutes, but last night's Law & Order- SUV episode had a Christian fundy who murdered somebody for being gay, and than tried to pin the blame on an innocent person.

Because we all know how many gay people are killed by Christian fundies.

I don't think I'd end up buying any real estate in VietNam. It'd be a long commute. Right now I just have a 3 minute drive to work. That might take longer.

Here's my $0.02. I've known a lot of military people - mostly Army - many of whom went to Nam (and other places.) They had some terrible experiences. They also had some fun. Even today they will still talk about some of those good times. Vietnamese food is wonderful, so is the scenery I hear. Sounds like the chance of a lifetime to me. You can call it a memorial trip and say a few prayers for the boys that never came home.

Giant 'corpse-eating' badgers terrorise Iraqi city

THE Iraqi port city of Basra, already prey to a nasty turf war between rival militia factions, has now been gripped by a scary rumour – giant badgers are stalking the streets by night, eating humans.

The animals were allegedly released into the area by British forces.

Local farmers have caught and killed several of the beasts, but this has done nothing to dispel the rumour.

Iraqi scientists have attempted to calm things down. However, the story has spread like wildfire in the streets of the city and the villages round about.

re: #209 funky chicken

Did Petraeus himself use the term "mini-Tet"? Or was that term used by somebody commenting on Petraeus' comments? Got link?

Did you read this:
The New Strategy in Iraq
General Petraeus learns from past U.S. mistakes.
by Frederick W. Kagan & Kimberly Kagan

A thorough article, the authors go look honestly at past mistakes, and the at what actually worked, and show what's right about the new strategy.

LESSONS OF THE PAST

A number of clear lessons drawn from these operations have informed the current strategy. First, political progress by itself will not reduce the violence. From May 2003 through mid-2006, the Bush administration and the military command focused on political progress as the key. The transfer of sovereignty in mid-2004, the election of a Transitional National Assembly in January 2005, the approval of a new constitution by referendum in October 2005, and the election of a fresh National Assembly in December 2005 were all expected to subdue violence by creating an inclusive and balanced government. Throughout this period, American armed forces tried to stay in the background, keeping their "footprint" minimal and pushing the nascent Iraqi Security Forces into the lead. Violence steadily increased. Sunni insurgents and al Qaeda terrorists dug into cities that U.S. forces left open, and Shia militias took control of abandoned Shia lands.

Note that the biggest mistake of the previous strategy is precisely what the Dems & Rinos are proposing now!

Ok, I found a link to Petraeus' Tet comment. I think he's coming from the point of view of a military man who studied Viet Nam and knows the history of the war as well as anybody. To most informed people, Tet refers to a US military victory that was thrown away by a defeatist media. Yeah, the leftis media will jump all over that. But maybe that was the point: hand the MSM & Dems a shovel to dig their own rotten hole.

The fact is, and you can read Yon if you don't beleive me, the Surge is succeeding in Iraq. The only way to lose the war is in Washington.

Thanks. I found a link to Petraeus' comments. Personally, they don't enrage me at all. Read Kagan & Kagan piece and you can see how the General was citing well known military strategy-counterstrategy. Everytime the US has gone hard after Al Qaeda in Iraq, they responded by striking back elswhere. The difference this time is that the US & Iraqi forces are pressing AQ everywhere at once. Unlike Fallujah, where many of the thugs slipped away and set up in Mosul, they can't do that so easily this time.

Andy MacCarthy at NRO make a very strong point,

Planet Earth to President Bush and the Republicans:

Al Qaeda — having killed nearly 3000 Americans on 9/11 and promising to do it again — is baking 11-year-old Iraqis and serving them as cannibal fare to their own parents! The impediment between these barbarians setting up shop and civilization is OUR TROOPS. Do you think, maybe, there might kinda, sorta be something here we could work with — y'know, assuming, just for argument's sake, of course, that we might possibly want to, um, take on the Left and rebut their insanity before we go along with all this?

Do you think maybe if you — repeatedly and convincingly — made clear to Americans what is going on over there, they might think, like, maybe we really do have to kill these savages — whose biggest target is us and who will get bigger and stronger if we leave? Do you think the American people, no matter how unhappy they are with you and how low your approval numbers are, will be content to lose a war to al Qaeda?

Is it possible that, instead of filling the media with stories about how your administration is trying to find a way out, we might possibly have you get on TV with some of the pictures Michael Yon has been publishing — and, y'know, like, friggin' P-E-R-S-U-A-D-E the American people that our troops are over there for a reason that makes a difference for AMERICAN lives.

I can't believe we're losing to these guys — in Iraq or Washington. Can't anybody here play this game?

I know how he feels. Bush is crap at communicating. But to give him credit, the media either ignores him or misquotes him when he does try.

The case for mistrusting Muslims
The latest terror plots are confronting tolerant Britons with uncomfortable choices.
By Theodore Dalrymple,

ARRIVING IN BRITAIN by air the day after two men crashed a gasoline-laden Jeep Cherokee into the main terminal at Glasgow's international airport, and a couple of days after two car bombs were discovered in the heart of London, I was surprised by how calm everybody was.

Apart from the prohibition of passenger drop-off and pickup next to the terminal building at Birmingham Airport, everything was as usual. Men and women in Muslim garb mingled in the crowd with perfect tranquillity, expecting neither violence nor even verbal reproach.

Was this a sign of the admirable tolerance of British society, or of its bovine complacency born of an inability, or unwillingness, to make the effort to defend itself? Was it decency, cowardice or stupidity?

I really don't know anymore, which is an indication of the problem: Only time will tell, and by then it might be too late.

Police Holding 3 PM Briefing On Missing Girl Case

POSTED: 1:58 pm PDT July 11, 2007
UPDATED: 2:34 pm PDT July 11, 2007

TACOMA, Wash. -- Tacoma police spokesman Mark Fulghum says a sex offender in custody as a person of interest is not the only lead in the abduction of a 12-year-old girl.

Watch Livestream Video Of 3PM News Conference

He said investigators are still tracking down information coming from their requests for tips and information from the public about Zina Linnik.

She was abducted near her home the night of the Fourth of July.

A tip lead investigators to search yesterday at the Tiger Mountain State Forest near Issaquah. Fulghum says they're checking a towel and trash that were found, but he says the items may not be connected to the case. The FBI is helping with the investigation.

The person of interest is a 42-year-old sex offender from Thailand who is being held for failing to register and for an immigration violation.
A search warrant says investigators found girl's undergarments Monday at the home where the man lives alone. He says he's remodeling the home for his sister.

Investigators also seized a gray van to search for evidence, and the man admitted he had recently changed the license plate.

The man denies any involvement in the Zina's disappearance.

Here's what I think: One Charles in the possessive is Charles's. However, if you have two folks named Charles, they are Charleses. Possessive for the two Charleses is Charleses'. Sounds the same in both instances, but written is different.
