True. A friend of mine gave me Michael Moores book "Will They Ever Trust Us Again". It's basically a collection of letters from people in the military bitching at Michael Moore about having to fulfill their contracts and break things and kill people, which is what a military does. Meanwhile, milbloggers, experts, and soldiers in the field are taking apart the stories lie by lie. And nearly to a person, they all note that anyone is capable of depravity, but the stories are completely unbelievable because someone would have been reported for these actions, especially the reckless driving of a Bradley and the discovery of a mass grave in the course of building a firebase.

Why prisoners would vote Democrat

Well, prison is supposed to be isolating. The prize of being allowed to vote again should be a carrot dangled in front of an inmate to entice him to behave, shape up, and earn parole.

But I did not know that a prisoner could vote in the riding in which they were convicted. I always thought it was the riding of their last known address.

That's terrible. Imagine a prisoner convicted of murder. In that riding, a father or mother, a son or daughter, some hard-working store clerk, or perhaps just a victim of a random mugging, is dead.

He or she will never vote again. But that person's killer is allowed to vote in their stead? And of course, this killer will vote for whomever is likely to let him out earliest.

I would say that being concerned about the quality and level of mental health treatment the troops receive after they return home is definitely not indicative of hatred towards them. One would think the opposite, actually.

Actually, such a study has been done, going back to the 1970s. I read it in college as a criminology student. They included Whitman, Oswald, Unruh, and a few of the others mentioned in this "article", plus a couple of others, notably Mark Essex, the former U.S. Navy medical assistant who went on a murder spree in New Orleans in December 1972- January 1973, culminating in a takeover of the Howard Johnson's hotel on 7 January, during which he killed six people out of a total of eght, mostly police officers.

The study found that the military "careers" of these killers were remarkably similar in that;

1. With the exception of Unruh, none of them were ever actually in combat;

2. Those trained for the combat arms, such as Oswald, invariably were discipline problems who were soon transferred to non-combat postings, often by their own request (Oswald and Whitman were technicians);

3. Most of the rest were never combat-trained or in combat arms (Essex was a dentist's assistant);

4. All had shown evidence of mental or emotional problems at least as early as BT (Essex, Unruh), or even going back to childhood (Oswald, Whitman);

5. When given psych counseling, all of them blamed everyone else for their problems; and

6. With the exception of Unruh (in WW II), none of them had finished their terms of service, most being discharged early for reasons of mental problems or substance abuse, after attempts at counseling had failed to make retention either possible or desirable. (Oswald being the other exception, as of course he defected to the USSR before he could be given a general discharge, which was in the works when he went AWOL.)

The test of a profile is whether it can predict the likely future behavior of a potential offender. This study from the mid-Seventies did a pretty accurate job of predicting Jeffrey Dahmer, to name only one example.

The bottom line being that the ones who this writer would define as "potential crazed killers" are exactly the types the military's present-day intake screening procedures are designed to spot and weed out before they even put on the uniform and take the oath.

This, BTW, is why I believe the story about the guy "miming eating brains" about as much as believe that "Scott Thomas" is a real, live grunt. That is to say, not one chance in hell.

Not only are they slandering our brave men and women in uniform (yet again), they aren't even doing their basic research in trying to put this one over on us.

Between 1940 and 1968, if you were male, in reasonably good health, and not demonstrably insane, homosexual, or with a disqualifying criminal record, the odds were quite high that you had military experience. Thus, if you want to cherry-pick your examples, it's not hard to find killers who had been in the military. For that period, however, there's a much higher correlation between military experience and being a priest, an executive, a welder, a stevedore or a President. Sorry to inject some (additional) logic into this, though. The only particle of truth in this piece is this: the left hates the military. Always has, and always will.

Since I wasn't going to read this piece I instead read the comments. Here is what I can add for those of you that didn't do this.

There were a number of posts showing feelings for the members of the military, based on the horrific stories displayed. Along the lines of what I expected to see. These poor serial killers probably wouldn't have done it were it not for military training. Yes, there may have been other factors that contributed to the killings, but the common thread is military training.

And then there was Pablo.

Pablo basically brought the hammer of reality down on the author, citing a lack of data to support what was written. And it was done without name calling and other ad-hominem attacks. Just a simple, "What are you basing this on?" He asked for the facts behind the story and when the author failed to produce them he held his feet to the fire. The author was even caught citing an incorrect source which he admitted to on a follow up by Pablo.

Granted, there are only 37 comments so who knows what would have appeared had this article remained available. But I for one take a little comfort in this Pablo character who didn't fall for the baseless crap being served.

It gives no joy to say so, but the lizardoids need to hear this.
As some of you know, I am retired from the US Army. I still retain many informal contacts with serving officers and NCOs. I have known some of these guys for 30 years or more and they are my source for what I have to say here.

On the basis of what I hear from these old friends, I am convinced that there are some quite serious discipline problems among returning troops at several installations, notably Fort Carson, Colorado, but not limited to there by any means.
These include such things as drunken and willfully reckless driving, bullying civilians (cutting in line, shoving, cursing, etc. in public places), frequent assaults against civilians and fellow soldiers, insubordination, a few reports of involvement in drugs and gang culture, and a report of a soldier using an air rifle to snipe at a high school parking lot from the balcony of his apartment. Most of this is unreported or underreported publicly because Colorado Springs is a staunch military town and the local media and police labor under the delusion they are being supportive when they look the other way.
It isn't serial murder by any means but it is serious and the failure to address it realistically will sooner or later lead to a real tragedy.

The mental health of returning veterans is one of the areas that appears to have been neglected during the Rumsfeld era, and we now have a three year backlog of psychological casualties to deal with. Pop culture mythology aside, we do have a wealth of experience in dealing with these problems and it is unconcionable if past mistakes are being repeated by those who believe that ignoring a problem is the same as solving it.
Iraq is a very tough environment, as bad in many ways as Vietnam, if not worse. It is no disgrace to come back unprepared for the civilized world, and suffering from nightmares, anger, and the usual psychic aftermath of war. It is war, it is pain and fear and killing. Decent people recoil from it.

When I came home from Vietnam, I needed some help and I got it. I didn't murder anyone, I didn't attack my relatives, and I didn't start using hard drugs. I did have a lot of trouble coping; things like depression, impulsiveness, apathy, anger, and so on.
As I have mentioned here in the past, my assigned therapist was none other than the great M. Scott Peck, an Army psychiatrist at the time and later a renowned author and philosopher. Dr. Peck started off by telling me that it was normal, in the literal sense of the term, for me to feel the way I did. I would be crazy if I didn't. That was the starting point for a brief but completely successful course of treatment that has paid dividends to this day.

This can be dealt with, but it has to faced realistically and without the kind of stigma that should have disappeared century before last.

Articles like this are completely logical and reasonable if you have the view that society is responsible for all the problems of life and that people are only deviant or destructive if society has twisted them. Just as Muslims believe that all are born Muslims and only corrupted by an evil society these people believe that life would be so much better without the corrupting influence of the dominant culture, which is Western Civ.

If I believed that I'd be a moonbat too, but I learned other lessons from life.

Went to the beach today with the family. The Gulf is wonderfully warm. The family only spent a short time at the beach before heading to the pool in the vacation trailer community we were at (my wife's "Popo" has a trailer).

Claimed the water was hot. It was in the shallows inside the first sand bar.

I did some surf fishing. Even in knee deep water, lots of fish all around me in the muddy water. And I'll bet you didn't know blue crabs can swim. Or maybe you did.

Caught nothing edible, but I caught 2 large catfish, which I believe are the inedible "hardheads" that also have stinging spines, so I used the big long handled de-fish-hooker. Not a bad fish, really, they put up a good fight. By large, I don't mean anything really big. Maybe 5 pounds or a tad over. One of the two catfish grunted at me as I removed the hook. How an animal without lungs can grunt, I do not know.

I kind of wish I knew my Gulf fish better. I'd recognize the yellow-fin and redfish I've seen others catch, but other than the 'hard head', I don't know of any inedible fish.

Wonder how soon it will be before Kerry, Murtha, McCain, go on a killing spree?

I agree that within certain precincts they are emboldened to express their true feelings, but I think there is something more at play. The anti Bush/antiwar crowd thought they had a real chance to end the war by congressional action. Now they see that's failed and they have moved on to a more high risk tactic: attacking and the maligning the troops. The New Republic, the Nation, all the usual suspects, are jumping on this simultaneously, which leads me to suspect a calculated change in tactics. Hopefully, this time we won't see the success this tactic achieved in the Vietnam era.

I’ve a feeling that the name is linked to a few more articles that were thoroughly fisked and discredited.

It seems that “Pablo” asks Corey Mitchell for his data and statistics; Mitchell provides “Department of Defense's own 2001 report to Donald Rumsfeld entitled "Defense Task Force on Domestic Violence."

But Pablo checks, and the data simply isn’t there.

Mitchell then admits that he used another source; “Marcia Herman-Gidden’s report, based on a study of two North Carolina counties where children from military families. . . ”.

Mitchell ends up writing quite a long response (actually two) and using an analogy.

Pablo’s summary: “You should correct and retract this. There is no factual basis for it.”

A quick reading of the article reveals that (quoting Mitchell):

“This article in no way is meant to suggest that all miltary members will become serial killers or mass murderers”

simply cannot be believed. The words and ideas, as written in the article, make generalizations and conclusions based on the actions of a very small and select number of individuals, and then apply them to the general military population.

What are the chances that Kos saw Mitchell getting pounded, and decided to take action?

Perhaps allowing anyone to post anything, if that is indeed Kos' policy, is not a wise one.

This is beyond the pale. Yes, the military does teach soldiers to kill other soldiers or combatants. It does NOT teach soldiers to kill non-soldiers or non-combatants.
And yes, despite what some former soldiers or Marines may say, killing another combatant is NOT easy on the soul and in fact it, in my experience and in the experience of other combat veterans with whom I've spoken, it is something that stays with you, frequently painfully, the rest of your life.
But it most assuredly doesn't make you want to kill civilians either while on duty or after you return to civilian life.
Instead of praising the brave men and women of the United States Armed Forces for winning wars and defending America by doing that which is contrary to everything we've been brought up to believe, naming killing other people - soldiers and combatants and the unfortunate civilians who get caught in the crossfire, this article would have you believe that the Military finds it necessary to make you a "serial killer" or "mass murderer" type of person in order to fulfill your obligations as a soldier or Marine. And that is absolutely pure, unadulterated horse shit.

Ive seen the same problem when returning stateside, I noticed a different type of Army then the one I left behind overseas.

Alot of Soldiers had that "short-timer" attitude that I always Hated.....you know the ones who daily announce how many days-and-a-wake-up they have left.

I was a civilian contractor on a weapons testing facility run by the U.S. Navy in '73. One of the enlisted men was rotating back from Vietnam. He had brought back a footlocker full of weapons, a skull, a few ears, some really grisly stuff. He spoke of how he'd like to find a tall building and see how many he could take out before he was taken out. He ended up tying his own hand and feet (a sure fire suicide technique) while holding a firearm and blew his own head off. He was a truly disturbed individual but in no way reflected the rest of the servicemen I met while I was there from '72 to '81.

While the cached version shows no comments (perhaps Google cached it immediately), it is entirely possible that there were comments (and they were read), someone saw the comments on “In Cold Blog” and sent an e-mail, Corey Mitchell’s name is known (and . . .), someone read the contents of the post (and . . .), or some combination of these events.

I'm at a loss for what they are trying to prove. At first, they called people in the armed services "brave" yet they allege (or rather, state) that the military trains future killers. Soon, our streets will be flooded with murderers all trained in the army. Sure.
