Update: Oakland Muslim Bakery Linked to Killings (Update: Suspect Confesses)

Sat, Aug 4, 2007 at 10:17:21 am PDT

The latest news on “Your Black Muslim Bakery” in Oakland: weapons seized at the bakery have been connected to several murders, including the daylight assassination of journalist Chauncey Bailey.

One of seven men arrested on Friday was Yusef Bey IV, the son of the bakery’s founder, Yusef Bey, a well-known local black Muslim leader who died in 2003. The six other men arrested on Friday were not identified by the police, nor were two suspects who were still being sought.

The police said the raid came after a lengthy investigation of other crimes, including two kidnappings on a single day in May, and two killings in July that occurred in the same north Oakland neighborhood where the bakery is located. The police had connected those crimes and put the bakery under surveillance before Mr. Bailey was killed.

“During our investigation, Chauncey Bailey was murdered, and it turns out that the evidence in that case also linked the same individuals we were looking at in the other two prior murders to that case,” said Lt. Ersie Joyner of the Oakland Police Department.

Asked whether there were any regrets about not moving faster to arrest the suspects before Mr. Bailey was killed, Assistant Chief Howard Jordan said that the Oakland Police Department’s resources were “very thin” and that the long-term investigation involved the cooperation of neighboring departments.

“Today was the best day we had, that we could have done this with the coordination of our allied agencies,” Mr. Jordan said. “We weren’t just kind of waiting around.”

Mr. Jordan said it was “very disheartening” to hear about Mr. Bailey’s killing, “and it was particularly disheartening to know it was connected to our investigation.”

The bakery’s operators had been investigated by the police in the past. In 2002, the founder, Mr. Bey, was charged with rape, sodomy and lewd acts with a child under 14, stemming from accusations that he had fathered a child with a 13-year-old girl in 1982. Mr. Bey died of cancer in 2003 before his trial began.

In late 2005, several members of the group that operates the bakery, including the younger Mr. Bey, were charged in an attack at a small neighborhood grocery store, in which liquor bottles were smashed and other merchandise was destroyed. The attack was treated as a felony hate crime, the police said, because the store, which is owned by Muslims, had sold goods forbidden by Islamic law.

UPDATE at 8/4/07 10:34:27 am:

Police: Oakland Post editor’s killer confesses to slaying.

A 19-year-old handyman at Your Black Muslim Bakery admitted to police Friday night that he ambushed and killed Oakland Post editor Chauncey Bailey, investigators said.

Police said Devaughndre Broussard told them he killed Bailey because he was angry over stories the journalist had written about the bakery, its employees and leaders in the past. Investigators said Broussard also was concerned about stories that he thought Bailey might be working on.

Bailey had apparently been working on a story about the group and its finances, authorities said.

Broussard made the admission to Sgts. Derwin Longmire and Lou Cruz. Broussard had been arrested at his home Friday morning in the 1000 block of 59th Street in Oakland, where police recovered the shotgun that they believe was used to kill Bailey the day before.

Police said Broussard had found out where Bailey lived and before the killing Friday morning had gone to the newspaper’s office to see if he was there. When he found that Bailey had not arrived at work yet, he began driving around in a van looking for him and spotted him in the 200 block of 14th Street, where he confronted him and shot him several times with the shotgun.

According to other media reports, members of this group have shot rifles and automatic weapons into the air (to threaten other local residents) and flaunted warrants issued against them (for assault and possession of weapons) which were never acted on.

I assume that firing weapons inside the city limits, and firing them in the street, into the air, is also prohibited.

If the Oakland police had been less PC and been willing simply to enforce the law equally against all citizens, this editor might still be alive today.

Islam provides a perfect breeding ground for the conversion of urban blacks into "spiritual" thugs much the same way the black panthers did back in the '60s. I have yet to witness anything good come from Islamic conversion, man or woman. And I hope our good black leaders are desperately trying to get the word out that this conversion ends in nothing but death and destruction.

I'd love to talk to Muhammad Ali sometime and ask him if he still thinks his conversion was the right one and who was more honorable: (1) MLK or (2) Elijah Muhammad.

Surely history has had time to fairly judge. I haven't driven down any Elijah Muhammad expressways that I remember.

46 zombie  Sat, Aug 4, 2007 10:38:46am

From what I've seen and read over the last 12 hours, this looks like the end of the Nation of Islam's presence in Oakland. The bakery will be shuttered permanently, the leaders of the group jailed, the organization will have its assets seized, and will likely disband.

And the world just became a brighter place.

The anti-gun left, Bloomberg, every leftist Democrat, Handguns Inc., etc, etc, etc, make certain that criminals with firearms such as these, are never properly arrested, charged, convicted and sentenced, because it keeps "gun crimes" fresh on the minds of ignorant people, hence, the kook anti-gun left can then spout about the need for "gun control"

That is a proven fact.

Wayne LaPierre of the NRA, told Bloomberg, "if you want to decrease gun crimes by 50-75% in one year, go down to your city prosecuters office and demand there be no more light sentences, no more plea bargains, if you commit a crime with a gun, you go away for a very long time, to life"

The left, including any on the Oakland PD, don't do anything about this stuff in time, because it serves the agenda of the anti-gun left.

That is a proven fact.

The biggest cryers and screamers for gun control, do the very least to keep criminals off the street, because it would decrease gun crimes, and they'd lose their "cause".

Hello,

I represent the Brody Campaign to prevent Baked Goods Violence.

As the Brody Campaign, we work to enact and enforce sensible bakery laws, regulations, and public policies through grassroots activism, electing public officials who support bakery laws, and increasing public awareness of bakery violence. Through our Million Muffin March Chapters, we work locally to educate, remember victims, and pass sensible bakery laws, believing that children have the right to grow up in environments free from the threat of bun violence.

As the Brody Center, we work to reform the bakery industry by enacting and enforcing sensible regulations to reduce bun violence, including regulations governing the bakery industry. In addition, we educate the public about bun violence through litigation, grassroots mobilization, and outreach to affected communities.
As we can see from this news story, bakeries are the first choice of terrorists and gang-bangers. I call for sweeping bakery legislation:

1. All bakeries must be registered with the police.

2. All bakery owners must have a BOID (Bakery Owner's I.D. card). No baked goods may be sold without one. No more than 10 items may be sold at a time.

2a.Say goodbye to your dozen donuts. Nobody needs more than 10 donuts. (Must be said with as much sneering condescension as possible).

3. Restricting the sale of easily-concealable donut holes, or Sunday morning specials.

4. Eventually, all civilian ownership of baked goods (notably the most dangerous assault-crullers) will be restricted to the Military and Police.

/duh...

I am certain, Devaughndre Broussard is mentally unequipped to do the planning and research necessary to kill this reporter

I was wondering about that...he was a 19 yr old kid...would he know enough to be angry enough to shoot someone or was he told to do it?

He was not too smart if he did not hide his guns...they found it where he was living.

And I'm the supposed societal nut simply because I own many legal firearms...

"I realized racism isn't just a black and white problem. It's brought bloodbaths to about every nation on earth at one time or another. Brother, remember the time that white college girl came into the restaurant — the one who wanted to help the Muslims and the whites get together — and I told her there wasn't a ghost of a chance and she went away crying? Well, I've lived to regret that incident. In many parts of the African continent I saw white students helping black people. Something like this kills a lot of argument. I did many things as a [black] Muslim that I'm sorry for now. I was a zombie then — like all [black] Muslims — I was hypnotized, pointed in a certain direction and told to march. Well, I guess a man's entitled to make a fool of himself if he's ready to pay the cost. It cost me 12 years. That was a bad scene, brother. The sickness and madness of those days — I'm glad to be free of them."

I am beginning to think that is a good idea...

It never hurts...plus proper knowledge of firearms / self defense techniques are needed in this day and age. Even if you never want to own a gun, knowing the proper respect you need for handling and maintenance of if is a necessary must if you ever encounter them in the future.

Once in my life (a Long time ago) I never owned a single firearm, and had no desire to. After I took proper training courses sponsored by certain ranges, and had more advanced training taught by former and active duty military personnel I started buying weapons. I don't hunt, but shoot for sport at the range. Add to the fact that I enjoy peace of mind with my CCW, and I am able to conquer the debilitating fear that normally freezes people in their path when your life is threatened or some thug wishes to apply physical harm to you or your loved ones (...which due to my job, these situations have occurred many times...)

I recommend it, even if you don't own any firearms. This kind of knowledge can only help you and your family not harm you (if you're trained correctly by professionals)...

The location we provisioned was in Oakland so I'm pretty sure this is the same business, we all had a good laugh because we could not figure out why it would have such a ridiculous sounding name and why it had to be black, did brown muslims have to go somewhere else? I used to hate this freaking business because they constantly had to be TD'd due to non payment and then immediately would pay so we had to re-connect them right away, this would happen at least once every month and the bastards had a lot of lines with centrex features which made it harder to re-instate them.

True, Malcolm X said that, but I'm still not quite ready to put him in the category of the Good Guys. What were once "radicals' of old, however, do begin to look a lot tamer in light of what we have, today. My father couldn't throw a dime in the toll booth without first spitting on FDR's face, but Roosevelt would be run out of today's Nannycrat party as being to the right of Lieberman. And I remember that there were some dark mutterings within the GOP about Barry Goldwater's credentials, the second time he was in the Senate. Some of the younger folks thought he'd gone soft. But:

Nation of Islam hater Yusef Bey IV Swat-ed

Evidence recovered during the police raid at Your Black Muslim Bakery Friday morning links members of the organization to the ambush killing of Oakland Post Editor Chauncey Bailey, authorities said.
...
Police would not give specific details about the cases they believe are linked to the people associated with the bakery, but did say some were committed last year and earlier this year.

Two are believed to be shooting deaths of two men last month within a few blocks of the bakery, in pre-dawn hours. One was the July 12 shooting death of Michael J. Wills Jr., 36, who had addresses in both Oakland and Fremont. He was gunned down in the 6200 block of San Pablo Avenue.

Four days earlier, Odell Roberson Jr., 31, was shot to death in the 1000 block of 60th Street. Police suspected the murders were connected because of the circumstances and similarities of weapons used.

of course ridiculous names make you ridiculously easy to Google - as is the case with Devaughdre Broussard, who - when he wasn't murdering newspaper editors - was receiving an award from Berkeley

At the Investment Portfolio Competition, 38 tenth-grade students presented their top investment choices to a panel of judges at Haas on Saturday, April 26.

The teams had spent the past year in the YEAH program using a computer simulation called Stock Quest to learn about the stock market. Each team started the year with a fictional one million dollars to invest and worked with a mentor to learn how to analyze target companies.

At the competition, the teams presented their portfolios, explained the rationale behind their investment choices, and described how those investments fared over a 12-month period. This year's winners were DeVaughndre Broussard, Alberto Fuentes, and Pierre Hudson. All three were mentored by second-year Berkeley MBA Tony Brekke. Each student on the winning team won a $100 savings bond.

I suppose it could be a different DeVaughndre Broussard (!), but if not - kudos to Berkeley for spotting young talent.

A word or two of caution here:

I work just a few blocks from Your Muslim Bakery. That doesn't make me an expert, I know. Several coworkers rave about the baked goods, and one swears by their fish sandwiches. (I haven't checked for reactions to the rats in the kitchen. There are potential ironies there too fun to speculate upon.)

But: It's not clear that Islam informed much of the crime and thuggery at YBMB. Smashing liquor bottles is the only overt sign I see. The Oakland PD claims there's no link between the bakery gang and Calypso Louie's Nation of Islam.

I think this group's association with Islam could as well be a symptom of its - shall we say delicately - lack of critical thinking skills and failure to join civil society as it could be a cause. In other words, this could be a bunch of criminal thugs who were going to be that way whether they labeled themselves Muslim or not.

Maybe, anyway. So don't be too quick to see this as a sign of dhimmitude in California. There are plenty of real signs to worry about.

They *should* investigate the bakery, since an investigation of the illicit finances of small businesses usually mean only one thing: money laundering. Nedir Bey, who stalked his ex-wife and threatened to beat her, received a grant of $1.1 million from the city of Oakland for AIDS assistance, in his capacity as CEO of EM Health Services a year after he pleaded "no-contest" to the charges of false imprisonment of Onipede. In June 1996, the city gave the grant but by 1997 officials were questioning Nedir Bey's expenses:

a $96,000 salary for Nedir Bey, $2,000 in cellular phone bills, $43,800 in consulting services, $12,600 for "security," $8,000 in "architectural fees," and $6,800 to lease a Cadillac Sedan DeVille for Bey's personal use -- although Bey later insisted that no city money was used to lease the car. Officials ultimately concluded that EM Health Services had spent $226,000 in excessive salaries and consultant fees in the second half of 1996 alone.
On July 18, 2001 the city received judgement against Bey, ordering the $1.1 million to be repaid. The money was not paid, and in March 2003, Nedir Bey stood for election in Alameda County. He was a candidate for Council member of City of Oakland, DIstrict 4. With only 282 votes (2%), he came last. Because of irregularities in his campaign statements and disclosure of expenditures, the City of Oakland issued a complaints notice against him.

The fingerprint unit at the department's crime lab used to consist of three technicians. But for the past seven months, it's been shut down for lack of money and staff.

Oakland cops still dust for fingerprints at a rate of about 113 cases a month. However, according to veteran homicide Sgt. Phil Green, cops often don't even bother to submit the prints for analysis because they know it's useless to do so."

I have no qualms about universal health care... as long as it apples to everyone! that includes our Congressmen and women... Good for the goose...Good for the Gander.
Our elected officials occasionally forget that they are there to serve us... no matter how much those "overpaid" servants make.
Get out and VOTE !

Maybe I missed it in a previous comment , but when did bakeries have leaders? I thought they had chefs and cooks and cashiers.

So if I have this straight, its prohibited for a Muslim to sell alcohol, but rape, sodomy, lewd acts and murder are permitted.

Gotta love those fine Islamic morals.

Sooo...

When do they arrest the police officers for incarcerating Yusef Bey IV because he was practicing his religion? Isslime specifically says to kill those who hinder the spread of Isslime...

What?!?

What did I say now?!?

But there is a Malcolm X Blvd in Boston MA.

Its (not coincidentally) the site where the new and controversial Islamic center mosque is located, as reviewed many times here at LGF.

There's a Malcolm X elementary school in Berkeley. Sadly, that's where my darling grandson will start kindergarten in a couple of weeks. There's a lottery system in the school system = no choice. I feel sick.

a lot of lines with centrex features which made it harder to re-instate them.

Can you expand on that a little? What is a centrex feature? Is this a more complex system than a "bakery might need? What advantages-features does a centrex system allow?

our existence here in the hells of North America.

That's the thing they don't like about America, you're free to make your life hell if you want to.

They want the government to do it.

252 Stuck-in-CA  Sat, Aug 4, 2007 4:06:41pm

First the murder of an Oakland newspaperman, now an arrest of a terror suspect in San Jose. Northern CA is a hotbed of radical leftists and radical islamists, with all the resulting crime and violence both those sick ideologies leads to.

And this is news to whom?

Why don't they just secede from the union and do all of us a favor?

I keep wondering why one of those fault lines hasn't let go by now, dumping the lot of them into the Pacific. I guess that would be bad for all the conservative holdouts behind enemy lines though.

I hope that the media will cover the life and career of Chauncey Bailey, who had the courage to pursue a lead against a dangerous group of thugs and murderers. What were the stories that Mr. Bailey was pursuing?

255 strandedSF  Sat, Aug 4, 2007 5:40:03pm

Sorry to be coming to this thread when it's dead, but I wanted to put in my two cents' worth.

Until two months ago, I lived 1/2 block from "Your Black Muslim Bakery." The Muslims operated an illegal school out of a home across the street from my house as well. I never could understand how they could afford to own two blocks of Bay Area real estate selling bean pies from a bakery that no one ever seemed to patronize. I guess it struck the late Mr. Bailey as strange as well, may he rest in peace. Apparently it doesn't pay to look too closely at Muslim finances. Lesson learned.

256 Bear  Sat, Aug 4, 2007 5:54:07pm

Of interest that the 59th Street location is only a few blocks from the old Black Panther headquarters of the 1960s

257 strandedSF  Sat, Aug 4, 2007 5:55:40pm

Bear,

I did not know that. I really was living in questionable territory.

The HQ was at 57th and Grove by old Merritt College site.

pegcity 8/04/2007 11:07:09 am PDT reply quote

"There is no word in Arabic for blacks that does not mean slave."

American blacks who convert to Islam are embracing the religion/Arabic culture that was the master force behind the African slave trade, starting it and still carrying on to this day in pockets of contemporary Africa. It is also the religion of the Arabic janjaweed who have recently slaughtered 200 000 black Africans (and counting) in Darfur, raping their women and displacing millions by burning their homes.

The treatment of blacks by Arab Muslims in both historic and contemporary times is unalloyed racism to the nth degree i.e. genocide.

A Black Muslim makes about as much sense as a Jewish Nazi.

Where are the two master extortionists, the reverends Jackson and Sharpton?!
Where are the demonstrations, the outrage and anger?!
Where is the NAACP?!

261 UncleSam  Sat, Aug 4, 2007 9:06:38pm

I work in a retail establishment, and last week I had some Black Muslim customers.
They were the nicest, friendliest, and strangely enough, the funniest, as in a good sense of humor, customers I had all week.
So it seems they're not all deranged or racist, as far as I can tell.

PS- I'm white.

262 adela  Sat, Aug 4, 2007 9:20:54pm

Uncle Sam...
As long as you do not antagonize them in any way or do not say anything about islam,in a retail establishment kind of an environment,in a client/customer type of relationship,,you should be safe.

Yep, can't be under the influence when you're doing what the prophet for prophet mo encouraged you to do. Sort of like the excuse by the Nazis "I was just following orders." Didn't work then and it sure isn't working now.

The concept of the rock-guitar solo in the eightees has pretty much been reduced to: Weedly-weedly-wee, make a face, hold your guitar like it's your weenie, point it heavenward, and look like you're really doing something. Then, you get a big ovation while the the smoke bombs go off, and the motorized lights in your truss twirl around!" -- The Real Frank Zappa Book.
