Two Arrested with Explosives Near Charleston

Sun, Aug 5, 2007 at 1:10:46 pm PDT

It happened last night, but there’s still very little information out there; two men of “Middle Eastern descent” were arrested after police discovered explosives in the trunk of their car.

Goose Creek - Berkeley County police pulled over a vehicle in a routine traffic stop near Meyers Road and Highway 176 around 6 p.m.Saturday.

The vehicle with Florida tags was driven by two men of Middle Eastern descent.

Some type of explosives were found in the trunk. Those explosives were detonated after three o’clock this morning.

Two men were arrested, and charges of possession of unlawful explosives are being prepared.

Officials are not at this time releasing any additional information on the number of charges or types of explosive devices they found.

The Associated Press report omits the fact that the suspects are Middle Eastern, with a headline that could not possibly be any more innocuous and unnoticeable: S.C. police detain 2 for suspicious item.

(Hat tip: LGF readers.)

They're just following all those cool verses in the koran, the ones that talk about killing infidels, Jews, etc.. Arresting them is interfering with the practice of their religion. From AP via foxnews.com:

"GOOSE CREEK, S.C. — A highway was shut down outside Charleston after police found a "suspicious item" in a car during a traffic stop, authorities said Sunday.

Charleston County Sheriff Al Cannon would not say what the item was, but said that a bomb squad planned to demolish it.

Cannon said two men who were in the car were still at the scene at 2 a.m. An FBI agent said officials were trying to determine whether a crime had been committed.

Julie Johnson, assistant special agent-in-charge for the FBI in Columbia, said there was "no immediate threat," The (Charleston) Post and Courier reported late Saturday.

Law enforcement officials closed the road about 7 p.m. after the traffic stop in Goose Creek, home to the Naval Weapons Station. The station houses the U.S. Naval Consolidated Brig, a military prison where enemy combatants have been held.

The traffic stop took place about 7 miles from the sprawling Navy facility.

Johnson said the FBI was still trying to determine whether a crime had been committed but that there was "no immediate threat" related to the traffic stop.

Goose Creek, with a population of about 30,000, is located about 20 miles north of Charleston."

They had something that was not a threat and maybe not a crime but the bomb squad is going to destroy it?

I've got this one on a 24 to 48 hour quarantine only because I've been known to accidentally buy fireworks in Ga. or S.C. and mistakingly transport them back to N.Y. That being cautiously stated with a slight amount of "limited hangout," not a lot of freckle faced 43 year old, Americans of Irish-Catholic ancestry, fly planes into buildings or blow themselves up in a crowded market. Generally speaking, we just drink a lot of beer and lite fireworks in the backyard. Just sayin'

two men of Middle Eastern descent.

That only slipped past the censors because the event occurred off-hours and was covered by non-big city press.

These days the American public is not trusted with this sort of information because we might just form opinions which are politically incorrect.

It was only a few years ago the names and descriptions of perps or suspects was released to the press immediately. How quickly we have become desensitized to not knowing these things. It is because the press is compliant in restraining this information.

The press would move heaven and earth to uncover or speculate upon the names of persons they do not like. That's what leaks are for. But leaks need not apply where protected groups are concerned. Why, next thing you know the American people might wake up and realize they are in the middle of a war -- and vote accordingly. The press will not be complicit in anything like that.

One thing not noted in the report:
They made the traffic stop for speeding, but one of the officers stated that they were alerted "information by an investigation in another jurisdiction" from my post:

Something to think on: the truck car came from Florida, was stopped in South Carolina, which is enroute to Washington DC. Maybe a stretch, but remember that the media outlet for Al Qaeda put up a banner promising a “Big Surprise” with a picture of Bush, Musharraf, and the White house burning recently.

UPI report:

A South Carolina highway was closed for hours Saturday night while authorities used a bomb squad robot to search a car.

Although U.S. Highway 176 in Goose Creek near Charleston, S.C., was closed for more than four hours, the FBI said there was no immediate threat, The (Charleston) Post and Courier reported. More than a dozen police cars, fire trucks and an ambulance surrounded the gray sedan being searched, the newspaper said.

An FBI spokeswoman said the federal agency was trying to determine if a crime had been committed. One witness told the newspaper the incident appeared to have started about 7 p.m. when police making a routine traffic stop and were talking with one man who might have been of Middle Eastern descent. The road was still blocked by authorities after 11 p.m.

UPDATE: Another story on the explosives, it appears there was a tip from “another jurisdiction”, even though the stop was made for speeding.

Lombardo also said information from an investigation in another jurisdiction raised the suspicions of the deputies

56 Luigi  Sun, Aug 5, 2007 1:36:46pm

Must be those darned Minnesota Lutherans again...

Mn-Dot is dismantling the traffic signals and putting up jersey barriers at the intersections on the upper part of Minnesota Highway 280 today. This bottlenecked the traffic on the I-35W detour route down to one lane.

After I checked my P.O. box in at the Downtown Post Office I found a place to park, grabbed the set of binoculars that I keep in my car, and walked down to the old Stone Arch Bridge. There was a crowd on that bridge. I couldn't see the whole of the wreckage of the 35W bridge but I could see huge patches of rust on some the structural pieces that were visible.

Why do I have the odd feeling that I'm living in a chapter of Atlas Shrugged?

62 ironbill  Sun, Aug 5, 2007 1:39:02pm

I read the comment earlier (can't recall who) but ther is an interesting relationship between maniacs with explosives in the trunk, traffic stops, and "Middle Eastern males." Perhaps the whole desire to get to those 72 virgins in a hurry makes ya' wanna' drive over the posted limit to get there.

LAKE CHARLES, LA (KPLC) - Shortly after midnight Thursday, one Lake Charles man died while engaged in sexual behavior involving a firearm.

The Calcasieu Parish sheriff's office has charged 36 year old Kimberly Grosset with negligent homicide in connection with the shooting death of her boyfriend.

Just another example of the MSM no longer even being a transcient point between information, and the audiences.

Me? When the bridge just collapsed in Minnesota, I did all my news searching on the Internet.

I even heard about the two dudes, supposedly disguised as Puerto Ricans. On the Net. This morning.

That the police/FBI, whatever, won't talk to the media; nothing new here, folks. They're as frustrated with the media as so many of us, are.

Separate from the arm that comes out funded to talk about the "religion of peace," and "no terrorism." What credibility does it all have?

Even Glasgow, I watched it totally on the Net.

So it seems the one area where the MSM thought they had a lock; that's gone, now, too.

By the way, you'll notice how FACTS do trump.

When it became obvious that the St. Anthony's Bridge in Minneapolis fell down through wear and tear. And, that maintenance had not uncovered its growing flaws, I think that's the way we do find out when something's "not terrorism." And, people let it go.

This neutering of the news by the press itself is one of the most dangerous things I've seen in a long time, and that's saying something. The press is entirely complicit in leaving out identification of suspects involved in crimes because I believe they do not want to reveal the race, or increasingly Islamic orientation.

I just going to reach out here and try to explain the mental algorithm I believe the press undergoes when they hide the fact that these men are of "Middle Eastern descent," i.e. Arabs. In brief, I believe the press is afraid if you get your hands on that information you would be more likely to support the President and the war, and generally adopt a conservative or Republican viewpoint . It is the position of the Democratic Party that the war is useless and counter-productive and there is no such thing as the War On Terror. If you find out that Arabs are sneaking around blowing things up, you're no longer going to believe that.

This can be fatal to our democracy. The founders provided for a free press. Here we have the press itself muzzling itself to keep the electorate in the dark.

And the public officials who are not providing this info to the press? It is the job of the press to, well, PRESS them! The press should be all over them like white on rice questioning why such information cannot be made public. You know, kind of like a Presidential press conference, or a session/skirmish with Tony Snow. But in this case, clearly the info is public and the press itself is censoring itself, against the wishes of the Founders.

I believe when money comes out of a 401k it gets taxed as regular income not as capital gains. In any case, if a democrat is elected, I'm sure all the tax rates will go up.

Yes, but with a capital gains tax of that percent the market is not going to do as well ergo 401k sucks wind. When capital shifts under taxes, it goes to more favorable environments... like offshore to countries where gains are not taxed as high. So we hurt US economy, our 401K's, and decrease the amounts collected overall in taxes.

This is how I thought they arrived at their logic: It is intolerant to think another race could do something bad. And if we keep disclosing the perps race while they're behaving badly....Americans will think "X" race is bad. And then we will have to start all over again at square one, teaching tolerance.

Interesting. Usually they immediately say it's not terrorism related.

The FBI spokesperson was probably playing golf and had to check in to see what they were talking about, hence, "could neither confirm nor deny." In other words "WTF?"

For whatever reason (... MSM desire to advance PC, ... general apathy,...so on so forth) these stories tend to drop off the radar screen. I will try, best as I can, to keep up to speed (pun intended) on this one. Cops in S.C. don't generally call out the bomb squad for bottle rockets in the trunk.

I don't get it. It seems to be a virtual news vacuum about this story. From what I've been able to piece together, this is what (I think) we know. 2 middle eastern men riding in a car that appears to be a rental with Florida plates were stopped for 10 hours on a US highway while the RED CROSS set up shop, then arrested while the bomb squad blew up 'illegal' explosives contained in the vehicle which was in close proximity to a US Naval facility, international airport, and appeared to be headed in the general direction of I 95 which after a cursory map inspection seems to be a bee line to DC.

The MSM version has been reduced to 2 guys were arrested after police destroyed a 'device' in South Carolina.

Am I missing something here? If I was a local journalist, I'd be all over this one.

They are of Middle Eastern descent and are not US citizens. Neither man has been charged, but charges are expected Monday. A press conference will be held at the Berkeley County Sheriff's office Monday at 11:30 in the morning. Among the potential charges is possession of unlawful explosives. Officials are not at this time releasing any additional information on the number of charges or types of explosive devices they found.

That's bylined Shantel Middleton again, like the original story. Kudos to her. It's the wire services that are the major culprits in this censorship. Especially the AP like Charles pointed out above. I'm sure everybody knows virtually every newspaper in the country runs wire service stories since they cannot have reporters everywhere. This shadowy AP is the prime culprit in this sort of censorship. They are literally the clearinghouse for a huge percentage of what the American public knows as the news.

While digging I got this over at Jihad watch from a week ago:

[Link: www.jihadwatch.org...]

GREENVILLE -- A man has attracted the attention of the FBI after an incident at a Greenville County church last weekend.
Sheriff's deputies said Iyad Abed Alnazli entered the Redemption World Outreach Center's morning service Sunday, and tried to approach the stage.

"It was a young man of Arabic descent who had come in and said that he had a message for the church and this was a word from Allah." church founder Ron Carpenter said

Security officers met Alnazli before he reached the stage and stopped him.

"He became unraveled. He began to scream vulgarities out," Carpenter said.

When the officers escorted Alnazli from the building, they found he had left a briefcase in the foyer and parked his car in a church worker's spot against the building.

"And our first thoughts were, 'We have someone here who's unstable.' But the concerns grew when he began to talk all of the terrorist language, 'I want to do my job. I want to go back to my homeland," Carpenter said.

Deputies called the bomb squad and the FBI to investigate....

The bomb squad blew up the bag, but found no explosives. The FBI told WYFF News 4 only that it was aware of the incident and would not elaborate, but Carpenter said he was told that Alnazli was on an FBI watch list.

Investigators said Alnazli had recently been treated for mental problems.

They were arrested about 50 miles from I-95. If they were on their way to DC they were hopelessly lost. The road they were on is a short cut between US 17 A (Main St. through Summerville) and HW 176 (St James Ave through Goose Creek). Meyers Rd has some houses and apartments and lots of woods, there really isn't much of anything out that way [IIRC an industrial plant is out that way] . They could have been trying to get to US 52 then to US 17N to get at least in the right direction, but it would have been easier to drive west on US 17A to get to I 95.

I live here in Goose Creek, SC, and it's funny to see how the media played this out last night. All they would say was the suspects were, "not white or black" so that only leaves one other race--HISPANIC! It's got to be! No one mentioned middle-eastern at all! I'm glad now more details have come out. You could tell the newscasters wanted to say middle-eastern, but were afraid to come out with it.

In Atlanta, the local media quit giving out the race in the description of the perp two decades ago. No reason was given but we have learned as the Soviets did that you can read between the lines and figure out whats going on. Lately it hasn't been a big issue as they normally will give out the name of the suspect. And generally you can figure out the race from that. Of course 90 percent of the suspects names are afro-centric and you can make your own conclusions from that. Still it is infuriating to get a description the excludes race. It is impossible to ID suspects with the description of male, 6 foot 1, 220 pounds. The American news media: Pravda would be proud!

Is it too much to ask of our Homeland Security to come out and make a statement?

What's the point of having those "Terrorist" Alert levels? Why make everyone guess as to what is occurring?

This is a failure of our government. They ask us to be alert but then they won't even bother to assuage our fears when something suspicious such as this happens.

Thanks for keeping us in the dark, Homeland Security. If this is nothing, then tell us. We can handle the truth.

Fireworks is not that big of a deal in the south. You might possibly get a citation if you keep blowing them off after the cops have told you to quit. But I have never heard of anyone being arrested for fireworks down here. As far as using the gun-powder of fireworks for an IED, this is extremely inefficient. By law fire-crackers are limited to 50 milligrams per round. M-80's have been outlawed for nearly half a century. If you want black powder all you have to do is walk into a gun-shop and buy it. Nowadays they will probably record your name. That my be the show-stopper for terrorists. Still, it is not that difficult to mix fertilizer and diesel fuel. I no longer trust our law-enforcement officials to gives the truth in these incidents. The SLC mall shooting is a perfect example of this.

Goose Creek - Two men are being held in the Berkeley County Detention Center after police find explosive making devices in their car. The men 21-year-old Yousef Megahed and 24-year-old Ahmed Mohamed were pulled over Saturday evening during a routine traffic stop near Myers Road and Highway 176. Among the explosive devices found were igniters and fusers. Few details about the suspects are known at this time. They are believed to be students at a Florida college.

India, the Kashmir, Pakistan, Bangladesh -- all officially part of Asia, and the part of Asia the Brits are most familiar with. Sometimes the area is called "the Subcontinent" but it's not part of the middle east.

198 Ledger1  Sun, Aug 5, 2007 2:57:11pm

Here is some information on fusers. But, “igniters and fusers” could arm a verity of munitions.

...The mines can be buried after the lane is closed. Upon completing the arming operation, fusers give the safety clips to the NCO, who verifies that all the mines have been armed and camouflaged. The NCO checks the strip and ensures that sandbags, tape, and debris have been picked up. The NCO gives the safety clips to the PSG, who buries them 30 centimeters to the rear of the beginning-of-strip marker.

202 Pal2Pal  Sun, Aug 5, 2007 3:04:01pm

2 points:

First, the "routine traffic stop" wasn't so routine as law enforcement had been "tipped" from "another jurisdiction" to be on the lookout.

Second, NSW is the home of the brig that has held enemy combatants but I don't think that is the attraction.

I posted this last night from the NSW website info pages:

Brief History: Commissioned in 1941, the Station had two distinct missions: as home for two strategic submarine squadrons and a tender, and as an ordnance station with capacity for more than 60 million pounds conventional ordnance. The ordnance mission continues today, and Naval Weapons Station Charleston is the only military installation in the continental U.S. with completely unencumbered explosive safety arcs.

The Weapons Station has expanded its mission and DoD support role, and today is a training center, with the Naval Nuclear Power Training Command, Nuclear Power Training Unit, an engineering center with the Space and Naval Warfare Systems Center and nearby Southern Division, Naval Facilities Engineering Command; and as the Army logistics hub, the busiest CONUS surface port in the defense transportation system.

From the Fact File: Naval Weapons Station Charleston encompasses more than 17,000 acres of land with 10,000 acres of forest and wetlands, 16-plus miles of waterfront, four deep water piers, 38.2 miles of railroad and 292 miles of road. With its integrated rail head, surge mobilization capability and the only unencumbered explosives arcs in the continental U.S., Naval Weapons Station Charleston is truly a unique national defense asset.

My husband was stationed there as the Dockmaster for 3 years and it is also the home to the floating drydock where our nuclear subs sneak in up the Cooper River when they need repairs. In addition to all that conventional ordinance which if exploded would probably blow S.C. right off the map, it also stores nuke warheads that are carried on our subs.

209 Pal2Pal  Sun, Aug 5, 2007 3:12:08pm

And since someone asked what "unencumbered explosive arcs" are, I looked it up and found this:

Here is what the page about Hawaiian ports has to say:

“Explosive arc” is a term for the use of the quantity-distance (Q/D) separation for a given Net Explosive Weight (N.E.W.) as a radius in order to plot Q/D separation on a chart.

This is done in order to assess the risk to life and property posed by a given explosive handling operation, and is a fundamental part of the permit approval process.

Q/D separation is figured using the following formula:  D=KW%u2153 where D = distance, K = 24, W = net explosive weight N.E.W. (lbs.).  “K” is the symbol for a factor of acceptable risk, or safety.  There are many different “K” factors for computing safety zones for various explosives and other hazmats under various conditions.

It is important to note that this distance should be used as minimum guideline.  Separation distances are not absolute safe distances but rather are relative safe or protective distances, and greater distances should be used whenever practicable.

The separation distances (Q/D) below were measured from the point where the explosives/ammunition are to be handled to inhabited buildings, public highway routes, or sensitive areas, such as large oil storage tanks.

So, if I read that right, an unencumbered explosive arc means there are no restrictions on weight, meaning there are some mighty powerful bombs around NSW.

Where did the assumption that these fellas were driving north from Florida to DC come from?

Having driven from FL thru the DC area to the NE many, many times over 30 years, I can't recall ever having to detour off of I95 in that area.

If these ME boys were travelling from FL to DC, and they were stopped by local police in the area displayed on the map provided in Michelle Malkins post, they weren't simply taking a potty break. Like you, I'd be real curious to learn about the reason for their interest in Goose Creek. The North/South corridor of I-95 doesn't even show up on that map. Neither does US 1.

For those not familiar with the eastern corridor's famous tourist trap known as South of the Border . . .here's a link that describes it.

211 doppelganglander  Sun, Aug 5, 2007 3:17:39pm

#55 Thanos:

Another story on the explosives, it appears there was a tip from “another jurisdiction”, even though the stop was made for speeding.

I would assume that means that when they were pulled over and the officer ran their license, they were flagged in some way -- warrants or, more likely in this case, they were already being watched. The news blackout may be an attempt to coordinate with the aforementioned other jurisdiction to raid another location or round up other suspects. So even though the media aren't doing a good job here (except for Shantel Middleton), it may be partially because they are receiving little information from LE.

re: #77 Carol Herman

Oh, Carol....don't stop there! This is news to me! --do you have any more....? ):

That particular guy's full name is Youssef Samir Megahed. While it's an uncommon name, again - this guy could be someone else, so I'm not linking other info I found.

But doesn't the MSM rationalize publishing top secret anti-terrorism documents/programs in the NYT's and CNN by touting The Public's Right To Know? Now suddenly we can't be trusted with certain "sensitive" information like the names and descriptions of perps or suspects?

Several un-confirmed nuclear incidents reported across America. Police put on alert for possible anti-muslim backlash.

President Chelsie Clinton declared marshal law and several bloggers were arrested as a precautionary measure following several nuclear incidents that at first were reported to have killed ten million Americans but now are said to have killed as little as 8 million. The President warned that the greatest danger is not that of fallout, but the possibility that 3 or 4 mosques might receive angry phone calls, an act the President said would be dealt with most harshly.

Like you, I'd be real curious to learn about the reason for their interest in Goose Creek. The North/South corridor of I-95 doesn't even show up on that map.

Not too far from there (South of Ladson) is the plant for the USA's leading manufacturer of armored (MRAP) trucks, Force Protection. The latter is cranking out over 100 MRAP trucks every month, running 20+ hours per day. All over Iraq the insurgents have scrawled KILL THE CLAW! on city walls to show their hate and disdain for Force Protection's Buffalo and its success at finding buried Land Mines (IEDs.)

The Associated Press writer Bruce Smith is hiding the fact that the arrested pair were of Middle Eastern descent, or else he included this important information in his article and his AP editor edited it out.

The question that an awake reader would have is whether there is any possibility that this could be related to jihadic terrorism. The Middle East descent of the explosives transporters increases suspicion, and this possibility of a jihadic terrorist purpose needs to be followed up by investigation.

This could also be a dry run for the transport of explosives, to test kafir security. In that case, they would provide a legitimate purpose for the explosives, but would continue probing kafir security to see where it is lax. They may be security probers, in which case they should be considered to be spies.

It could be a schizophrenic MSM editor who forgot to take his/her meds or one CAIR supporter and one regular news reporter tugging over the head lines.

Let’s see, two middle eastern men from Florida who just happened to be driving by a large military installation when an Islamophobic police officer pull them over for “driving while jihad” and found what appears to be military “Igniters, fuses and a bomb” in the trunk of his car – which had to detonated by a bomb squad.

Are you asking why the word terrorism has been redefined? I think probably for the same reason that all kinds of issues get redefined. Because it works to sidetrack people. Take terrorism for example. The same tactics are being used, by those of the same religion and ideology. So what has changed? How we define terrorism that's what. It now can be anybody or group, for any reason, using any tactics or weapons. Or how about illegal immigration. Nothing has changed except how it's now defined, It's now workers without documentation. Like they lost their Social Security card or something. Take any issue, you can see how it's been redefined by the leftists.....on their terms.

I have watched FOX News like once in the last two months, and I never, ever watch any of the other leftist Democrat state run msm, because they are nearly all nothing but blatant, outright, premeditated liars.

This is why I trust people like Charles Johnson, Charles points out the lies, discrepincies, spin, and other such insnaity from the bulk of the msm, and though there is little I can do about it, other than to stay prepared in every way, for anything, I still want to be informed.

with a headline that could not possibly be any more innocuous and unnoticeable: S.C. police detain 2 for suspicious item.

Sigh...
I guess it would have been unrealistic to expect them to write it

Two Arab-looking Muslims Caught Red Handed With C-4, Semtex.

Linky no workie.

Here it is again. Car crashes into barrier at Y-12

If that doesn't work, try going here, scroll down a a click or two to teaser with headline same as above, and click on the "Click here for complete article" link below the teaser.

If that doesn't work, Try http://www.oakridger.com/ and do a keyword search for "barrier" (without quotes).

I never could get the video to play and then I left for a dinner engagement. While I was out the pictures were posted and I agree, the smiling is kind of creepy.

I guess we are stuck waiting for the press conference, but I'm not buying the fireworks bit. They said fuses and ignitors and gasoline. Would they call in the bomb squad for that? Would they use a robot to search the vehicle for something that turned out to be fireworks material? I don't know what the law is now, but when we were stationed in S.C., you could buy any type of firework at roadside stands. M-80s, bottle rockets, cherry bombs, you name it, there they were at these drive up stands like going to the Dairy Queen. Surely S.C. law enforcement is plenty familiar with fireworks materials. Besides, I've seen M-80s do a terrific amount of damage, especially if they are put in an enclosed space on a timed fuse. Sticking the fuse end into a lit cigarette about halfway down the cig. will give you several minutes of lead time. Someone clamped the lid down on this story real fast and that fact makes it suspicious by itself. I don't think the reporters are to blame for the lack of reporting.

Nah, the two were oboists. You know, they keep making those dangerous double reeds.

Oboist extremists must be stopped or all US symphony orchestras will be in grave danger!

I think the reporters are scared to death, hence no accurate report.

This story reminded me of a scene from Stephen King's 'The Stand', which I refuse to detail here. One reason I gave up reading his stuff. I don't need that garbage in my head. More brain bleach needed!

Coming soon to a mosque near you - Rage Boy and his Muslim Metal band 'Megahed'!

I didn't know he was on tour.

Persons of "middle eastern decent" with explosives in their trunk?

Surely they were only planning on 'expressing themselves'...

/do I have to?

re: #321 leepro

Leepro: Sorry to leave you hanging! It was Oak Ridge, and apparently some guy ran into a barrier there, then took off on foot before they could catch him. Again, it was "not terror related" and "nothing to see here", but they were looking for the guy. The article said a man "matching his description" had been seen afterwards in a nearby town, but that he had not been caught. They didn't, however, divulge what his "description" was. If they don't want people being paranoid and suspicious, they should come right out and divulge it. Since they didn't, of course it is natural to assume these days that he probably looked Middle Eastern. That is the habit of the press, to omit uncomfortable information. I will see if I can find the article.

328 PeggyU  Sun, Aug 5, 2007 11:11:49pm

Here is the article I read, leepro. I found it repeated elsewhere, but nowhere a description of the person.

329 Strike Hornet  Sun, Aug 5, 2007 11:25:40pm

Now had this been two "Christian" students and had they been within 100 miles of a "Planned Parenthood" clinic, now THAT would've been a "lead terrorism story" for ABC News...

Curious little story here:

Montco man killed in bed
Jereleigh Morton, 47, a real estate developer, is believed to have been asleep when he was shot early yesterday.

Here's a few curiosities:

They described the family as quiet, polite people, Muslims who wore traditional dress.

and

Newspaper property records indicate Morton and his wife, Myra, bought the Mount Pleasant Avenue Southwest-style house for $1 million in 2005. A handsome house, it is set off the leafy road and down a long driveway ... Before moving to Whitpain, Morton lived in North Philadelphia near Allegheny Avenue [baaaaaaaaad area] ... His occupation was plumber and handyman, but he had become involved in buying and rehabilitating houses in Philadelphia, Ferman said.

Real estate transaction records show he bought at least three houses in the last two years.

336 ErisLDysnomia  Mon, Aug 6, 2007 7:40:18am

#335

forgot to add:

Morton was supposed to leave on a personal trip to Morocco yesterday, Ferman said.

and

Much about the case remained shrouded in mystery yesterday.

re: #337 MartelBrigade

Ahmed Bedier, executive director of the Tampa chapter of the Council on American-Islamic Relations, a civil rights organization for Muslims, said the men arrested are Youseff Megahed, 21, and Ahmed Mohamed, 24 - two University of South Florida students - and - the men are not troublemakers and that they a were simply on a weekend trip to North Carolina.

Now we can all go back to sleep.

339 knotboy  Mon, Aug 6, 2007 8:28:30am

My brother saw this happen. He said he passed the men on the way back from dinner with the family. He first thought they were Mexicans being arrested but found out from the news that they were Middle Eastern.

340 faraway  Mon, Aug 6, 2007 12:55:22pm

I am a little slow this week.

I think we may have been had on this one. It is likely a setup by CAIR.

This topic should be called Flying Imams Part 2 or even Smokey and the Rocket Boys

341 cant know  Mon, Aug 6, 2007 1:16:33pm

I have been lost in that area
The signs for the base are not as obvious as you might think
You can drive around and not be aware their is a major military station close by

If avoiding I95 it would be interesting to find out how the came up from Florida

342 TexasYeehadist  Mon, Aug 6, 2007 6:18:45pm

Lizard hatchling reporting, so be gentle.

Ahmed Bedier, Executive Director of the Tampa Branch of CAIR has posted a video on YouTube where he vindicates law enforcement for doing their job then vilifies law enforcement for apparently profiling these naive kids with firecrackers in their truck.

343 jayzee  Mon, Aug 6, 2007 6:26:40pm

This is awesome. Keep in mind the two had pipe bombs on them! Pipe bombs!
[Link: bob.wjla.com...]

"Definitely this is not related to terrorism," said Ahmed Bedier of the Council on American-Islamic Relations.

"Had these been two good ol' boys from South Carolina driving through and speeding - and even if they did have some fireworks - nobody would have been arrested," Bedier said.

344 ceejaytoo  Mon, Aug 6, 2007 8:20:39pm

It's no wonder Rush calls them Al-AP. Al- Reuters, Al- CNN-- they are so driven by an agenda of hatred for freedom and conservatism, and mired in propping up socialism, multiculturalism and antichristianism. Not to mention sharia. Muckabunchafuslims!

345 Ledger1  Tue, Aug 7, 2007 12:11:01am

Here illegally with pipe bombs?

Just dandy!

We should let more in!

Mohamed is a native of Kuwait and Megahed is Egyptian, the sheriff said. Both are in the country legally... They were heading west, away from Goose Creek, when they were pulled over... from the sprawling Navy facility...

Officers became suspicious because the men quickly put away a laptop computer and couldn't immediately say what they were doing in the area or where they were going, DeWitt said... deputy then found what he thought were explosives in the 2000 Toyota Camry and called the bomb squad. Technicians confirmed the devices were pipe bombs and destroyed them, according to sworn statements in the arrest warrants... Mohamed, 24, said he made pipe bombs from items he bought at Wal-Mart, according to an affidavit with his arrest warrant.

See: WJLA-TV

346 Ledger1  Tue, Aug 7, 2007 12:35:55am

Mohamed: If I could only have placed those bombs in a fuel laden jet aircraft or got them to ignite a gasoline truck it would have been good.

Megahed: Patience my brother. With Allah’s help and CAIR’s lawyers we might get a second chance.
