Here’s an open thread for the remains of Tuesday morning; as noted in the previous topic, I’m traveling and will have sporadic access to the web today.

Charles' Mystery Excursion is good news for me too: knowing that there will be no new LGF threads today, I can safely ignore the computer and get some real-world work done!

And then it's off to my LGFA meeting:

"Hello, my username is zombie, and I am an LGF addict."

"One thread at a time, zombie, one thread at a time."

[Group hug, weeping.]

Anybody else have computer trouble on the "Shock Troops" thread? Even now, it wants to load, then reload, etc.

Hah! That's what you think. Just when you think you are safe working, you will check LGF and find Charles finished up early and there are six new threads on hot subjects, each with excess of 500 comments. And you would have missed it because you would have been at some touchy feely group sensitivity group hug thingee.

Seriously, when I get to that point I don't ask. I tend to present it as a fait accompli. In other words, I'm taking time, you have a preference of days, but my not taking is not an option and isn't going to happen.

First, go cry victim to the media, painting a picture of hopeless desperation. Next, lob a few rockets into his front yard and kidnap one of his children. Finally, threaten to really start blowing shit up if he doesn't comply. Repeat, as necessary.

Most members of the al-Aqsa Martyrs Brigades group granted amnesty last month by Prime Minister Ehud Olmert have not turned in all their weapons despite of media reports to the contrary, while some haven't even signed their amnesty contracts, WND has learned.

I've just been on that Kos website. They've got some frothing at the mouth item about a "Christian Embassy" at the Pentagon. I couldn't be bothered to read it after seeing "radical" and "fundimentalist" being tossed around.

The bit that made me laugh was the comment that how dare they think the media wouldn't notice. They haven't noticed terrorists. They haven't noticed the indoctrination of your schoolchildren, it's all just an exercise in understanding. Apparently. All suspicious behavour is done by "people" rather than one particular section of your poulation. The list just goes on.

Are they all mad as a box of frogs over there or Is it me?

go into the office (or wherever) and ask "I'm trying to figure out the holidays with the wife/kids/mother/father and am wondering how much vacation time I have stored up"

Then say
"wow, that much; I should take a couple of days next week/month to get the house ready for winter/visit the kids/folks etc"

I saved up almost three years worth of vacations so that I'd have lots of time when my dad passed away.

re: #58 MandyManners

Beuchamp and his ilk aren't bad people. They're INDIGO CHILDREN.

They come into the world with a feeling of royalty (and often act like it).
They have a feeling of "deserving to be here," and are surprised when others do not share that.
Self-worth is not a big issue; they often tell the parents "who they are."
They have difficulty with absolute authority (authority without explanation or choice).
They simply will not do certain things; for example, waiting in line is difficult for them.
They get frustrated with systems that are ritually oriented and do not require creative thought.
They often see better ways of doing things, both at home and in school, which makes them seem like "system busters" (non-conforming to any system).
They seem antisocial unless they are with their own kind. If there are no others of like consciousness around them, they often turn inward, feeling like no other human understands them. School is often extremely difficult for them socially.
They will not respond to "guilt" discipline ("Wait till your father gets home and finds out what you did").
They are not shy in letting it be known what they need.

I'm not interested in going to the Kos website to see what they say about a "Christian Embassy" at the Pentagon, but I can tell you that back during WWII the Pentagon held Christian services there during Holy Week each year. My father and Virgil Fox had been drafted in the military and were assigned to the Pentagon for that week each year to take turns playing for the services. I don't think a gun was held to anyone's head forcing them to go to the services, "convert" or be killed as the RoP likes to do.

Oh, look...it's the return of the Vast Right Wing Conspiracy!:

Gore: Polluters manipulate climate info

SINGAPORE - Research aimed at disputing the scientific consensus on global warming is part of a huge public misinformation campaign funded by some of the world's largest carbon polluters, former Vice President Al Gore said Tuesday.

"There has been an organized campaign, financed to the tune of about $10 million a year from some of the largest carbon polluters, to create the impression that there is disagreement in the scientific community," Gore said at a forum in Singapore. "In actuality, there is very little disagreement."

That's a really amazing piece of propaganda from Al-AP. basically, everything Gore says in it is 180 degrees from the truth.

re: #58 MandyManners

Sounds to me like spoiled brats but the, I'm old-school. The writer is one of them; 'guilt' discipline does not involve 'wait until your father gets home" that's a threat of physical discipline. jeesh. no wonder they are so screwed up.

On TV and before Congress, mine owner railed against more regulation

The president of the Utah mine where six miners are missing has been vocal against more regulation of the coal industry, even going as far as to call Sen. Hillary Clinton "anti-American" for suggesting the nation needed a president who is for workers' safety.

During an interview with Fox News' Neil Cavuto in May, Robert Murray responded to a comment from Clinton, who asked a crowd whether they were ready for a president who is "pro-labor and will appoint people who actually care about workers' rights and workers' safety..

"Bob, do you view this rhetoric as pro-labor, anti-business, what?" Cavuto asked Murray.

"Absolutely not," Murray responded. "I view it as anti-American. These people should -- are misleading the American worker then they talk about jobs. These are the people advocating draconian global warming conditions that are going to drive American jobs to foreign countries and raise electric rates for everybody on fixed incomes."

Murray continued that he found it contradictory that union people are supporting Democratic candidates "who are advocating environmental and other regulations that will actually drive jobs out of this country. And the American people should not be bamboozled by this."

If I recall it had a 170 or 200 engine or some puny little thing and the only feature in the car was an AM radio. It was also that puky green that was in vogue back in the early 70s. But the damn thing would never quit. Most reliable car I have ever owned, even if it wasn't the most comfortable.

About 10 years ago I had to go to Frisco for business for a week. Longest week of my life, I could not wait to get out of there. It would take being paid an incredible amount of money to even get me to consider the possiblity of going back there again.

I remember the first day, walking down Market Street to meet a businees associate and some skanky woman walked by me, stark naked, painted silver all over with TV antennae coming out of her head. And nobody but me seemed to notice. Then the next day was the Gay Pride parade.

Not my cup of tea.

I remember those shifting systems. Know why they got stopped from being made? Cause too many dummies accidentaly hit reverse while the car was moving forwar, and sheared a tiny little metal part that cost 40 cents to buy and $200 in labor tear the tranny apart to replace. I know cause I did some of those repair jobs when I was mechanic in the 70's.

Yeah, she's a piece of work. She wants a car, so I told her if she lived at home and transferred to the local, less prestigious college, the money I save on tuition could pay for her car. I didn't hear any more about it for a while. Next she decided that when her brother joins the Navy next month, her dad should drive his car so she can have Dad's nicer car (on which he is still making payments). I suggested she could take over the payments. Now we've bargained her down to taking brother's old car but she has to learn to drive a stick. This ought to be fun.

Luckily I wasn't one of them. I used to run it thru the gears (1-2-D) at full throttle. As much as I abused that car it refused to die. My sister finally killed it by putting it into the back of a Mercedes. The Mercedes sustained a bent bumper and the Dart got a punctured radiator. The cost of the repair was more than the car was worth so I took the insurance money and used it for a down payment on a brand new 1969 Datsun 510. Cost $1895 brand new. Put almost 180,000 miles on that car with no mechanical problems. But the body must have been made out of old beer cans and toothpaste tubes because it just sort of disintegrated over time.

While there I also played Old Head - it was great, though it has not stood the test of time and is expensive. For what it's worth, one guy I was there with told it Old Head is better than Spyglass...

Arnold Palmer's Tralee course was great. Front nine more forgiving than back nine.

Balllybunion New Course. It was a bear - but we had it all to ourselves as we could not get a time on the Old Course. If you want to play the Old Course, there is an Inn in town, I beleive called the 19th Green, that can get you on the course if you stay at the inn.

Other courses I have researched and put on my next itinerary include Cork Golf Cub (also called Little Island - its an Alistair MacKenzie design and he was a principle arcitect of Augusta), Dooks and Doonbeg.

Hope you have fun!

Union officers in America are handing fake work books to illegals in order they get work, they then take a kick back from the illegals from their pay,
the Union officers help with the fake ID's, help with the fake SS#s,and worse of all the "work book" fake .

This isn't anything new. In 1971 I was working for a construction firm in New England, a non-union shop. We got a contract to work on the government housing on the Naval/Sub base in Conn(?). Then we were informed that union members only could work on site. When we came into work the next day, we were all paid union members that had completed trade school and were now journeyman carpenters. The boss had worked a deal with the union folks. Never cost us workers a dime. But, damn if that wasn't one fine LTD stretch sedan the union guy drove.

Oh man! it's like cheating playing witht he European ball. About the same weight but maybe 10% smaller in weight. All that boils down to a lot less surface area for air friction and the ball goes much farther. Last time I was in Ireland I got to play a private country club In Newtonards. I was playing standard American balls to start out with. About the 3rd hole I found a European ball in the rough, and so hit and extra drive on #4 with that. I did not hit it all that well, and it still went 20 yards farther than the standard sized ball. Biggest problem I had was clubbing down so I did not fly the greens all the time with the european ball.

I HATE driving stick shift. My husband insisted that we buy one in Israel (better on gas, cheaper yadda yadda) and Jerusalem is so full of hills. It was not a pretty picture. I hated every second of driving the car. I will never drive standard again.

I hear the "better on gas" rational all the time. Problem is, so few people can drive efficiently and professionally enough to squeeze out the efficiency of a standard transmission. These drivers are easily heard coming down the road.
But, of course almost three quarters of the male population say they drive better than the average driver.

From what I understand, this rationale has pretty much disappeared with modern automatics.

I grew up driving an automatic (well, okay, by "grew up" I mean as of age 17, not like I was driving at 2 years old, you know); then deliberately switched to a stick about 9 years ago. I much prefer it now.

Any of the vehicles I drove while in the Army were standard shift and I think they worked out better than the automatics for field conditions. After I retired from the Army, I tried my hand driving OTR for a little while.
Now days I just cruise with my automatic transmission because most of my driving is Stop(light) and Go type traffic.

From what I understand, this rationale has pretty much disappeared with modern automatics.

There is still a certain amount of slippage in the modern automatic transmission just due to it being driven by hydraulics.

But the preference for stick has more to it than just that. You can control a car better with a stick than with an automatic. I can use the engine to brake the car with a stick, not so much with an auto.

I have driven on treacherously icy roads in the past successfully with a stick only becasue I was able to down shift and use the engine to slow the car down without having to touch the brakes. With an automatic, I would have spun and ended up in the ditch.

Not exactly a serious off-road vehicle, but it works okay for winters in Colorado.

What's a shirt throw shifter ?
Wait, maybe I don't want to know...

It was not my comment but I think the term should have been "short" throw shifter.

Just means the stick had to move relatively little distance to switch gears, which becomes very important in competitive racing.

330 3 wood  Tue, Aug 7, 2007 2:17:17pm

I've got to clean up a few work items and hit the road on my Fuji 18 speed, which has very short throw shifters, by the way.

Later.

For some reason, Ford hasn't been able to make a decent manual shifter for a rear wheel drive car since the 60s. The shifter that came with my car was crap. Reminded me of a video game controller.

Wisconsin's Ward Churchill - Only Worse Update:

University denies Barrett position

Former University of Wisconsin lecturer Kevin Barrett was denied a fall teaching position he had applied for in the English department, university officials confirmed in July.

Barrett, who brought a great deal of scrutiny to UW last year for his outspoken defense of a Sept. 11 conspiracy theory, wanted to teach a 300-level English course on Chaucer’s Canterbury Tales but was not hired because the other candidates were more qualified, according to UW spokesperson Brian Mattmiller.

I know I'm very late to the thread but I post this in the hope you see it and it gives you some comfort.

I've been divorced for 10 years and was the custodial parent for three children. I traded alimony, debt and her indiscretions being made public for the house and the children. The children took their anger out on me in the beginning but as I supported their college educations and the marriage of my oldest daughter, their anger subsided. As long as you are there for them, their (your son's) perception of you will change. Stay in it for the long haul and it will begin to bear fruit. Show your children love and caring and they will eventually come to see you as the loving father you are.

BTW it took my son, the youngest, to reach the ripe old age of 24 to realize that I really cared. (about the same age for my daughters as well)
Patience, love and being there mean more than you can imagine.

Posts or statements like those of KenKen are an example of just how far we, as a nation, have gone down the PC "rabbit hole". GWB may not be a great orator but his words ring true to those of us that live in the world as it exists not the world we wish it to be. Short answer to all his/her questions belies the difference between "us and them". Reality may suck but we, the adults, have to deal with it.

European Heighten Threat Levels

The English are feeling the pinch in relation to recent terrorist
threats and have raised their security level from "Miffed" to
"Peeved". Soon, though, security levels may be raised yet again to
"Irritated" or even "A Bit Cross". Londoners have not been "A Bit
Cross" since the blitz began in 1940 and tea supplies all but ran
out. Terrorists have been re-categorized from "Tiresome" to "A Bloody
Nuisance". The last time the British issued "A Bloody Nuisance"
warning level was during the great fire of 1666.

Also, the French government announced yesterday that it has raised
its terror alert level from "Run" to "Hide". The only two higher
levels in France are "Collaborate" and "Surrender." The rise was
precipitated by a recent fire that destroyed France's white flag
factory, effectively paralyzing the country's military capability.

It's not only the English and French who are on a heightened level of
alert. Italy has increased the alert level from "Shout loudly and
excitedly" to "Elaborate Military Posturing." Two more levels remain:
"Ineffective Combat Operations" and "Change Sides."

The Germans also increased their alert state from "Disdainful
Arrogance" to "Dress in Uniform and Sing Marching Songs." They also
have two higher levels: "Invade a Neighbor" and "Lose".

Belgians, on the other hand, are all on holiday as usual, and the
only threat they are worried about is NATO pulling out of Brussels.

The Spanish are all excited to see their new submarines ready to
deploy. These beautifully designed subs have glass bottoms so the new
Spanish navy can get a really good look at the old Spanish navy.

They have a tiger by the tail.

If they sold 1% of their holdings, the other 99% would decline in value by 10%. And just why would they do that?

There is almost no way they can get out of their position in less than twenty years, without taking gigundo losses.

And this doesn't even count what would happen to the $300b in trade (or whatever humongous number it is now) that we do with them per year.

Nope, they're stuck but good.

Here's the quote from the top link on Drudge right now:

The Chinese government has begun a concerted campaign of economic threats against the United States, hinting that it may liquidate its vast holding of US treasuries if Washington imposes trade sanctions to force a yuan revaluation.

Two officials at leading Communist Party bodies have given interviews in recent days warning - for the first time - that Beijing may use its $1.33 trillion (£658bn) of foreign reserves as a political weapon to counter pressure from the US Congress. Shifts in Chinese policy are often announced through key think tanks and academies.

Described as China's "nuclear option" in the state media, such action could trigger a dollar crash at a time when the US currency is already breaking down through historic support levels.

Bin Laden was right, we are a paper tiger. We are a nation of wimps. We've sold out our country for cheap trickets and beads. We let these people poison our children, arm our enemies in Iraq and Afghanistan selling them the weapons they use to kill our boys. We don't lift a finger to stop them. We don't lift a finger to help in the war on terror.

The threats play into the presidential electoral campaign of Hillary Clinton, who has called for restrictive legislation to prevent America being "held hostage to economic decisions being made in Beijing, Shanghai, or Tokyo".

Isn't the bank of America owned in London?
I could be wrong. So it's OK if London owns US interests just not Bejing? Is Hillary being racist? Err, maybe get some money printed without floating Illuminati eyes. Debase the currency then buy it from the Chinese.
