Al Qaeda Camps in Pakistan Abandoned?

Sat, Aug 11, 2007 at 11:44:44 am PDT

Bill Roggio has a disturbing report from Pakistan, where Al Qaeda training camps in the Waziristan regions have suddenly emptied out: Pakistan: Concern over nukes as al Qaeda camps empty.

The Fourth Rail interviewed a senior military intelligence official and a military officer, both of whom are familiar with the situation in the Northwest Frontier Province and wish to remain anonymous. The sources confirmed Mr. Shahzad’s information concerning the al Qaeda and Taliban camps in North Waziristan and the Taliban’s reorganization is accurate. Both sources are particularly concerned about the implications of the emptying of the camps.

Mr. Shahzad reported there were 29 al Qaeda and Taliban camps in North and South Waziristan, and all but one “have been dismantled, apart from one run by hardline Islamist Mullah Abdul Khaliq.” [Note: on October 4, 2006, The Fourth Rail reported “there are over 20 al Qaeda and Taliban run training camps currently in operation in North and South Waziristan.”] While The Fourth Rail sources verify the camps’ existence, they noted the camps have not been dismantled, but the infrastructure is still in place. “The physical infrastructure (camps and the like) still exist, they haven’t been dismantled. They’ve just been abandoned or are being operated by skeleton crews,” the senior military intelligence source said, while noting “the Khaliq camp is only churning out Taliban, not al Qaeda.” ...

The emptying of the camps is a cause for great concern in the military and intelligence communities. “We don’t know where they went to or who was in the camps,” the military officer told The Fourth Rail.. “They are well trained, these aren’t your entry level jihadis. They are dangerous.”

“This is one of the reasons that we are worried about a major CONUS [Continental United States] attack,” the senior military intelligence source told The Fourth Rail, noting the recent influx of news of terror cells attempting to penetrate the US. “If they evacuated their bases, they almost certainly did so out of fear of more than just the Pakistani army.”

Seconded. That was my first thought. My third though was to wonder whether that's reason to doubt the reports. Wish I had more confidence that the WOT would have dismantled those camps via bunker-buster if their coordinates were known.

One wonders if, with Musharraf taking two steps back and Benazir Bhutto getting face time on the MSM, the enemy is smelling blood in the water. Pakistan in flames would be an incredibly destabilizing thing, even without nukes. As far as another 9/11; I don't think AQ even looks at the calendar. They want every one of us dead, every day of every year.

Ploomie -

This is a really easy one - we don't want to stir up Pakistan any more than is necessary. Camps were known, observed and inhabitants sent to Allah as they crossed into Afghanistan. Don't have to like it or agree with it, its just the way it is.

29 camps...
So 29 MoaBs are in the air and on the way right? Right?
Destroy the camps and seed the bombed areas with enough land mines and radioactive isotope dye marker to make everyone that goes back a glow in the dark one-legged ballerina.

Much easier to say "sorry" than get permission in that area of the world.

If Paki complains, we'll give them something else shiny and expensive to play with for a while and they'll be happy.

But I'm simple.

50 redshirt  Sat, Aug 11, 2007 12:05:41pm

I agree it's disturbing on first read. However, this is from the Torah reading I completed this Sabbath:

And it shall be, when ye draw nigh unto the battle, that the priest shall approach and speak unto the people, and shall say unto them: "Hear, O Israel, ye draw nigh this day unto battle against your enemies; let not your heart faint; fear not, nor be alarmed, neither be ye affrighted at them; for the LORD your God is He that goeth with you, to fight for you against your enemies, to save you." I thought there were only 2...

To Behead or not to Behead, that is the question.

...even then, just give it time and the 'not to Behead' will either be killed by the 'To Behead's' or will join up with them...so I would argue along with you that there really is only one type of Islam...

Years ago I took a taxi in Indonesia and told the driver clearly where I wanted to go and what I wanted to see. The driver said he knew exactly what I wanted and told me to hop in. I hopped in and proceeded to take a nap.

What was supposed to be a 30 minute trip ended up being 2 hours and where he took me was not exactly where I wanted to go. Of course by this time I was thirsty and hungry and in the middle of no where.

Lucky for me the driver had a friend who had a restaurant just nearby.

Man jailed for taking woman to hospital
MICHAEL THEODOULOU

A NIGERIAN convert to Islam who took his sick neighbour to hospital has been jailed in Saudi Arabia because he was not related to the elderly woman.

Ibrahim Mohammad Lawal was convicted of immoral behaviour by religious police who enforce the state's strict code banning women from mixing with men other than relatives.

Well, with the U.S. borders wide open, with virtually no enforcement, and no real plans in progress to change that, I'd say they'd have as easy a time getting into the U.S. as the other 30+ million illegals have.

And with the leftist Democrats trying to insure, at every turn, that there will be no listening in on known al-qaeda phone conversations, I'd say that things are being set up quite well for the islmofascist human butchers.

Leonardo DiCaprio is coming out with a new movie in the spirit of Al Gore's movie:

Arriving in a Canadian-made electric car for her first walk down the red carpet at a Hollywood movie premiere this week, environmental activist Tzeporah Berman was appropriately dressed in an outfit made of wood pulp.

Berman, who made a name for herself during the Clayoquot Sound, B.C., logging protests of 1993, is one of two Canadians -- along with environmentalist David Suzuki -- featured in Titanic actor Leonardo DiCaprio's new documentary film, The 11th Hour.

"As a Canadian, I find it devastating that our natural heritage is literally being exported into the United States to make junk mail and catalogues," said Berman, co-founder and program director of ForestEthics, a non-profit organization dedicated to preserving endangered forests. "We have some of the most beautiful and important old-growth forests left in the world and 80 per cent of our exports are going to the United States."

DiCaprio's film, which he produced and narrated, "talks about the need to support new ideas and solutions and I think it will encourage individuals to call on decision-makers to do that," says Berman, 38, a native of London, Ont.

The 11th Hour, which made its North American debut Wednesday, features luminaries such as former Soviet president Mikhail Gorbachev, scientist Stephen Hawking, former CIA director R. James Woolsey, and dozens of other experts on environmental and sustainable development issues.

Berman said the DiCaprio film is similar to Al Gore's anti-global warming film, An Inconvenient Truth, because of its grave warnings about where humanity is heading. But she also predicted that the new movie will inspire with its focus on new ideas and solutions to promote action.

She noted there are many new ideas that are both environmentally sustainable and present good business opportunities, such as the zero-emission, no-noise vehicle with the apt acronym ZENN, produced by Toronto-based Feel Good Cars. She rode to the screening in one Wednesday.

I wonder if DiCaprio is seeing an opportunity to cash in on the GW frenzy here. Has he looked into starting up a carbon credit store?

It is noteworthy the camps have not or not all been totally evacuated =

They’ve just been abandoned or are being operated by skeleton crews,” the senior military intelligence source said

Why leave caretakers behind if they expect the buildings to soon become piles of rubble?

It will be interesting to know if the camps fill up again - or no - over the next few weeks.

If they remain empty for longer than that then one must strongly suspect this was a "strategic move."

152 Render  Sat, Aug 11, 2007 1:01:23pm

For the moment I'd agree with #136 Snakespit.

Somebody in the Paki government/military tipped off the Talib/al-Q to the contents of the US intel dossiers that were given to Mushies people.

The Talib "Spring Offensive" inside Afghanistan has been a disaster for the Talib with massive casualties for them and no land taken. The Red Mosque action turned into a debacle for the Talib.

This is a bad time seasonally for the Talib/al-Q to be taking offensive actions in that region. Fall and winter are traditionally a time where people of the region struggle just to stay alive against the elements.

===

However...

As Bismark once said to his staff officers, "Gentlemen, if there are three options available to the enemy, you can be assured that he will take the fourth option."

As Roggio notes, this particular training class from those camps may have been intended to help the Talib/al-Q forces gain, (regain, or retain), control over new provinces within Pakistan.

===

IOW: This could be a bad sign, but the odds seem fairly low of that.

Or: It could be a good sign, and the odds of that are very high.

LATTER,
R

I can't understand why this bothers anyone, or causes anyone to fear. ... Why in the world should any of us fear the abandonment of a bunch of caveman camps in that mountainous wilderness?...

If there are thirty or so known camps that haven't been hit it is because the US military and the ISI are using them to keep an eye on things. You know, if you smash the camps the AQ's just build new ones that are harder to find. Meanwhile you keep watching the camps looking for that mysterious tall gentleman to wander in.
When the AQ's suddenly leave all their camps at the same time that is a signal that resonates with the old World War 3/ Cold War intel boys because prior to doing something provocative you might expect your adversary to want to move his assets away from where they are usually parked, just in case. Suppose AQ were to attack, a jumpy public might demand an immediate response, no matter how ineffectual. Those thirty camps would be the best targets because they could be hit while the planning staff scouted around for better places to use newly authorized force.

So fast and unexplained exits could mean that a warning signal has been issued to the camps by AQ to expect those thirty camps to get some very unpleasant visits in the near future. Either a warning of imminent attack on Pakistan or the US, or a serious leak in the operations side of Pakistan or the US that an attack on the camps was being considered about now.

Taking on even one of those camps within Pakistan's NWFP would have required a fairly massive operation. An operation of that size would cease to be "black" or "covert" the second the first choppers left the ground.

A quick comment about the above references to "Jack Ryan". I believe you meant Jack Bauer of the "24" TV series. Jack Ryan is the principal character in the Tom Clancy novels ("Hunt For Red October", etc.).

As for the main topic of this thread, I hope our intel boys and girls have been keeping an eye on movements in Iran and North Korea. Both have been uncharacteristically quiet and nice-nice diplomatically. And all that started essentially right after the Norks did their nuke test. We have foolishly sat back and let these two mortal threats proceed with their nuke development, assuming that we could eitherpressure them diplomatically (duh) or survive a first strike (how does it feel to be the sacrificial lambs, NY and DC?).

I'm tired of Debka reports and "anonymous sources". There's no mystery here what these guys ARE going to do. This is an existential decision. We should do the deed. Now.

Sounds like we might have given the base info to the Pakis so they could hit them, (meaning we could hit them secretly and let the Pakis say they did it) and the info got leaked out. Either that or they're all coming out to engage in their favorite pastime, getting their asses shredded by the U.S. Military in Afghanistan.

But just in case, I'd make sure we had the location of each and every Paki nuke well located and within "reach" of our military.

AQ are gearing up for a win/win situation here:

They launch major terror strike/s on the CONUS. This will be completely unpreventable given the ease with which these people can enter the country and the fact that they are all highly trained terrorists, i.e. nothing like your Fort Dix variety.

Following the successful and probably horrendous terrorist strikes, the US then has the choice of either invading the Pakistani tribal territories with or without Pakistan's consent ... even with consent, this will push many so-called 'moderate' Pakistanis to side with the jihadis ... or alternatively the US can just take the terror strikes without any sizeable response and thus hand AQ the propaganda victory of beating the 'Big Satan', emboldening jihadis the world over and enormously demoralising the US citizenry.

If the US respond by invading the terrrorist host country, in this case northern Pakistan, the military will find itself stretched close to breaking point as the wars in Iraq and Afghanistan are still far from being over. Chavez will likely do his bid for the global struggle of the 'oppressed' and offer Venezuela as a staging point for the entry into the CONUS. This adds the need to take action against Hugo as well.

AQ know all this and that is most likely precisely what they are after. This gives me the cold creeps.

Well according to the AP, the wedding fired in the air and "disturbed the peace"...

Hamas shows up in trucks...jump out (via brown-shirt tactics) and begin systematically shooting and beating the guests...throwing chairs... yelling and hollering...then they drive the pickup truck through the wedding reception...making more noise then a pack of elephants waring tap shoes in an antique china shop...all to punish those who disturb the peace...

...and these camps weren't bombed because?

206 abu_garcia  Sat, Aug 11, 2007 4:14:15pm

I'd like to offer some observations to the various posters who have said we should have acted against these camps.

We are in a struggle for the survival of Western Civilization and the rest of the free world to which it gave birth. It will be a fight to the death, we are not going to persuade our enemies to relent. We do not have a chance unless we are united and the majority of people in this country and throughout the civilized world realize the seriousness of the enemy and what is at stake. At this time that degree of resolve is totally and completely absent.

IMHO the enemy is correct in its estimation that it can bleed us and weaken us. After 9/11 lots of folks wanted to bash the enemy with our superior force, but way too many of our people and our "allies" are not convinced of the seriousness of the threat to either sustain the casualties on our side or, more importantly to inflict the carnage on our enemy necessary to win the war. In their eyes we simply do not have the casus belli.

In my opinion, even a lot of the people on this board do not face the reality of what we will eventually have to do to prevail. There has always been a lot of talk about "flattening" this or "bombing" that, but few of us are willing to say the word "killing" (not talking to you Iron Fist), especially if it means the horrendous number of deaths that it will take to root jihad out of Islamic culture.

Going into this thing piecemeal would only assure our defeat. Sun Tzu knew this, Machiavelli knew this, even FDR knew it, and we had better learn it if we are going to survive. I personally doubt that there is a chance, not a glimmer of hope, that we could sustain a real war as long as we are comfortable with our jobs and McMansions, nor would the nation be willing to sacrifice those for the hypothesis that we are in that kind of struggle.

We are walking a tightrope in Pakistan, and striking there, just like invading Iran, would require a commitment that the nation is nowhere near ready to make. In fact, the burden of a half-committed war would only take us farther from that day.

It is unpleasant that, like an alcoholic, we are going to have to hit bottom before we will fight for our lives, but that's the way I see it and I have a feeling that a few folks who make the decisions are realizing the same.

BTW, I'm not saying there shouldn't be some black ops, but even with that we'll have to be careful.

207 Ghengis Khan  Sat, Aug 11, 2007 4:21:23pm

If I were them, I'd be waiting till the presidential election to do anything. If they can get somebody like Hillary or Barack as an opposing Commander, it makes their job alot easier. Among the plausible explanations for a coordinated emptying of the camps in Pakistan is the explanation I like the least: They know we know where the camps are and that we feel constrained about striking them. Maybe they think something will happen in the next few days that will remove our restraint. Well spoken! We are divided as a nation and I do not see any sign of that changing for the foreseeable future. Our resolve is weakening and the number of our allies are shrinking.

As far as the Camps are concerned, this smells like an intelligence leak to Al Qaeda rather than a major operation to me. It is unlikely that a tipoff this large would be given either the Pakistani or US military. This action is also inconsistent with Al Qaeda behavior in the past before an event.

This makes me f**king sick - there were 29 Al Qaeda camps. We knew where they were and we did nothing.

Whether Pakistan liked it or not, we should have just flattened them. I can't imagine they would have any serious defences. We could have wiped out Al Qaeda in one afternoon.

Now - after 3 years of humming and harring, it's too late.

I despair of our "weak, sensitive" attitude. Diplomacy only stalls the process and gives our enemies time to grow.

White guilt effectively kills us.

Be ye not alarmed! (not more than usual that is) When CNN aired congressional concerns over the camps there, they do what rats do when discovered, they move on. Plenty of mountain apses and caves to hide in.

Where is Thanos? This story would seem to fit well with the guy teaching the kids to lie, in the thread down below --but, last time I made such a comparison, Thanos said, no, there's different kinds of Islam in Pakistan...?

Its true. Some of the people there are very nominal Muslims. Many have tribal and traditional Shamanist beliefs that supercede their Islam. Some are Shia and they hate the wahabs and are very aware that the mullahs in Iran are weriod. Incidentally... these are the same people who BUILD the girls schools and who beg for funding for women's centers in those same schools with sewing machienes... for their wives' benefit. You see, then she can make stuff that Pops takes to town and sells, thus enhancing their wealth, and her own value. Helps pay for supplies to get thru the winters. MAny of these guys traditionally take only one wife. Its too hard to feed multiple wives, and all those kids in that poor region. The women traditionally care for the animals, like goats, sheep, cattle, donkies, and they cant do that shut up in the house like animals. The men dont like doing what they think of as women's work, either. So taliban rules are not particularly popular with those guys. And the wahabs coming in upsetting the traditional life, Pisses the old guys running the villages off. They like order and tradition. Adat.
They need those young hands that the Taliban wants to put guns in, to do the work and make it thru the rough winters.
Not all of these guys is looking to beat all four of his wives, and blow up Americans, 24-7. Some of them just wanna be left alone, and they really wish these wahabbis would get outta their hair. The whole Saudi funded madrassa phenomenon threatens their lifestyle and culture just as much as it threatens ours. Especially the Shia in the Hindu Kush.

They could become our Allies. We have common cause with them. But we must sit down and sip their chai, and give their elders respect before they will talk to us. Its not hard. But it does require a certain amount of going native and learning where our interests lie.
