A would-be mass murderer in Morocco tried to take out a bus full of tourists today, but only succeeded in blowing up himself.

RABAT (Reuters) - A suspected radical Islamist tried to blow up himself near a bus carrying tourists in the Moroccan city of Meknes on Monday but he detonated the gas cylinder he was carrying before reaching it, police sources said.

“The gas cylinder exploded some metres (yards) from the bus and badly injured the attacker,” said one police source. Another source said authorities suspected the bomber was a member of the radical Islamist Jihadia group.

Police sources said the failed suicide attack came after anti-terrorism police stepped up a crackdown on radical Islamists in the past six months, arresting scores of suspected jihadists. “That crackdown move put terrorists on the defensive and destabilised their plots and forced them to commit acts of despair like this one,” a third source added.

High court denies prisoner's efforts to stay at Guantanamo

Ahmed Belbacha has been incarcerated at the U.S. military prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba, for five years. He has tried to keep himself detained because he said he fears being tortured by the Algerian government if he goes home.

The justices, in a one-sentence order, denied his emergency request for a stay to any pending release.

55 Thanos  Mon, Aug 13, 2007 3:25:43pm

This is exactly why we need to combat the electronic jihad stronger -- Al Qaeda's scraped below the bottom of the barrel now, and they are digging in the dirt beneath the barrel. The e-jihad is in hopes of gaining more support in a world where their support is beginning to flag badly, contrary to what the MSM is saying.
E-Jihad & hostage taking is what they can do... everywhere else they are failing or getting crushed.

I'll make a longshot prediction that Michael's little brother Marcus (an even bigger loser) will try to take the fall for his cash cow brother and say he was behind it and its a simple case of mistaken identity. They have from now until the trial to make him look like his brother's double for the trial to help put a seed of doubt in a few juror's minds. And then go after the credibility of the hoodlums who turned states evidence.

I agree Michael should get a lifetime ban from the NFL, but with his high priced lawyer, don't rule out an acquittal just yet.

It amazes me that these people are somehow smart enough to build a bomb capable of killing dozens of people, but aren't smart enough to detonate it in the midst of them.

Gotta disagree here a bit. The typical bombmaker terrorist group member ( and I am thinking of the Palestinians in particular ) doesn't wear the bomb himself.

They usually recruit the young, stupid, ignorant and impressionable to wear the bomb. The actual splodeydope is usually not bright enough to build a bomb.

And from an organizational point of view, you don't want to sacrifice the guy with the know-how to make more splodeydopes. And usually, the engineer, being relatively smarter than a splodeydope, knows there ain't no 72 virgins anyway, and likes living. Making splodeydopes is fun for them- vicarious thrills.

Buy a GSM phone anywhere in the world and send it too Iraq. So a number bought any where will do, no such thing as Iraq specific numbers. You don't turn the phone on until the device is in place.

From reading the blogs it sounds like ours guys are getting ahead of the curve on cell phone detonated bombs, the bad guys are going back to hardwired. Plant the thing string the wire, then after a while the go back if the thing goes unnoticed the hook up and wait.

206 JohninLondon  Mon, Aug 13, 2007 5:46:39pm

In February I visited the ancient Islamic university city of Fes in Morocco, quite close to Meknes where this incident happened.

The old town of Fes is a real rabbit-warren of alleyways, quaint but fetid. The famous buildings were vastly over-rated (just like the Alhambra in Granada) and the town was generally a mess.

Most of the people were OK. But what really struck me was how often the young men, if they could not hustle you to buy something in their alleyway, would start real bad swearing - hating the tourist, it seemed.

And this happened again on my last morning, about 6am in a street cafe, hardly daylight, waiting for a taxi to go to the airport. A young punk in the cafe opposite walked across and tried to offer a guided tour, I politely told him I was about to leave the city - and he broke into a tirade of swearing at me. Bith cafe-owners appeared too scared to say anything to shut the punk up - so even though I am in my mid-60s I stood up and spoke firmly to him. He then crept away like a cur.

No kidding - some of those people really hate us, they have massive unemployment and a mess of a society. Much trouble lies ahead.

I am not surprised that someone tried to attack a tourist bus. Its what they do.

(And thanks to the Labour Government we have imported a lot of it into Britain)

The thing that really bothers me about the 9/11 highjacker memorial, is that, aside from the very few who are giving their all to have it stopped, much of America either doesn't even know about it, or they don't even care.

That is a very troubling sign of what is ahead for America.

Accidents happen, especially when you are a little nervous that 72 virgins might actually be 72 raisins. Hopefully the perp will go the same route as the botched Glasgow perp went. Dead from burn injuries. Hopefully he will talk a little before going to meet the 72 raisins but the operative word is dead and if he doesn't talk, at least the g-t f-er won't kill innocent humans again.

222 Q-Burn  Mon, Aug 13, 2007 5:59:42pm

I'm importing this from the open thread because it deserves more attention. We have all seen live TV news where the reporter suddenly gets more information on his earpiece and relays it. "I'm now getting updated reports... the earlier high radiation levels reported were false etc."

That's not what seems to be happening here. About :48 in you can hear the producer say "tell them no radioactivity". The reporter becomes very flustered and starts hemming and hawing. Suddenly a report about high radioactivity levels becomes a story about normal radiactivity levels in very Orwellian fashion. Watch it and see for yourself:

Radiactivity Detected at New Jersey Accident Site

re: #41 km

OT

Something weird going on in New Jersey.

[Link: [Link: [Link: www.homelandsecurityus.com...]...]...]

13 August 2007: A minor accident that took place at Hoboken and Summit Avenues in Hoboken, New Jersey Sunday night - a mere 6-mile drive from the Empire State Building in Manhattan prompted the response of police to the scene as the driver of one of the vehicles fled on foot after the accident. But the police were summoned for another reason – the vehicle from which the suspect in the hit-and-run fled contained a “box” in the trunk containing “radioactive” symbols. According to a law enforcement source close to the Northeast Intelligence Network interviewed shortly after 5:00 this morning, sensors carried by police that measure radioactivity sounded an alarm that indicated higher than acceptable levels of radioactivity, prompting a response from HAZMAT and other officials. Police, fire and HAZMAT officials established a safe perimeter around the accident scene, and the driver of the car containing the box or device emitting radioactivity was caught several blocks from the scene.
This event took an unusual twist, however, when Fox Channel 5 news reporter from New York City was reporting live from the scene. As he was describing the event, a voice coming from the reporter’s ear piece was picked up by his microphone: "TELL THEM NO RADIOACTIVITY" was the message clearly heard as isolated as a sound file HERE. Viewers can clearly see the befuddled reaction by the news reporter to the message from his ear piece in the video clip below, and the confused response to the complete change of information by the television anchor.

Capture a few boxes, pull the bullets, pour out the powder (not black powder, btw), and substitute something stiffer. Mix a few of those into the other rounds and let the VC find them one at a time and end up having to destroy the cache in self-defense.

TheBugMan1956 (#188),

Yes. And yes. We have a whole array of new tech that "blip" cell phone and wireless signals to set off IEDs.

Wearable IED Jammers

July 29, 2007: The United States has ordered hundreds of additional wearable CREW (counter radio-controlled IED electronic warfare) jammers. Earlier this year, the U.S. ordered 10,000 of the new CREW jammers (for defeating roadside bombs). CREW is a further development of the first jammer, the Warlock, which appeared in 2003. Warlock is currently the most common jammer in Iraq and Afghanistan. The Warlock has gone through many revisions, to add more frequencies and better software.

In addition to jammers like CREW and Warlock, several of the U.S. Air Force and Navy electronic warfare aircraft are able to perform the same functions, but over a wider area. This was often used when American troops were in action against the enemy, shutting down IED detonation over the entire combat area, as U.S. troops moved around seeking out and fighting the enemy.

Most Americans don't know the meaning behind the symbols or anything else related to the memorial for that matter. There are a few people who are truly tuned into these things - both at Ground Zero and in Shanksville. Perhaps that's as it always is, or maybe people are simply more apathetic than ever.

Either way, those who know ought to do what they can to make their voices heard - both to inform the rest of us out there what is happening, along with what the symbols mean.

Look, there's nothing wrong with a crescent per se - it's a common shape in nature and architecture. That's what the architects have said in the past about the Shanksville memorial. The problem is when you add in the other elements and you have to seriously ask questions over the intent and meaning of every single element involved.

Thanos, slightly off topic, you are pretty well read on Pakistan and the politics of the area. Do you think India will stand idly by if the Pakistan government falls?

1st, sorry for the delay, we had an internet problem as I was typing the reply earlier ...

The problem with trying to answer that question is that I don't read the Indian papers that much, the Indians who come to the Paki blogs are generally anti-partition trolls and Indian security, so hard to judge Indian gov't reaction to such a thing.

First, I don't think the gov't is likely to collapse in Pakistan, worst case scenario is the army replaces Musharraf, but that's not likely either.

If the gov't did collapse, I don't see India stepping in unless they see signs of Islamists taking over the army. Regardless of all the sensationalist stories you read, that's not likely to happen. The Pak army is well educated, and while they sympathize with the Fundis on occasion, it's only for the gain they can get.

Israel Outsmarts Dumb Rockets

August 13, 2007: Israel is going ahead with installing the Iron Dome anti-rocket system. This is a defensive system with a unique twist. Iron Dome radars (there are two of them) quickly calculate the trajectory of the incoming rocket (Palestinian Kassams from Gaza, or Russian and Iranian designs favored by Hizbollah in Lebanon) and do nothing if the rocket trajectory indicates it is going to land in an uninhabited area. But if the computers predict a rocket coming down in an inhabited area, a $40,000 guided missile is fired to intercept the rocket.

"Thanks for halting the Blue Angels. When they use clean alternative fuel like hemp oil, they can come back."

This is why it is more than just a "debate" of ideas with these leftist anti-Americans.

The solution is,

How very sad.

Or maybe just bad reporters.
Never ascribe to wile or evil intent what may reasonably be best described as simple incompetence!

Thanks you for that. Those are words to live by. But just because I'm paranoid it doesn't mean they're not after me!

Excellent. Looking forward to it.

I hope the Moroccan authorities extract any/all information from him before he expires.

Given the predicament this thug is in I would make all efforts to keep him conscious and restrict dosing him with opiates. Don’t put him on a ventilator. His self-inflicted injuries should provide enough discomfort to get him to talk.

If he dies then he dies.

It would be a mistake to allow him to linger on like the Limey Authorities did with GasCaniStanMan. The cost to the medical system is too high.

WhiteRasta (#267),

The system should calculate where the rocket was launched from and then launch a hellfire to impact that exact spot.

We use a counter battery system like that in Iraq and Afghanistan. The British don't use theirs and are reduced to being pot-shot targets for the jihadis.

re: #267 WhiteRasta

re: #264 Geepers

That is a BS waste of time and money.

The system should calculate where the rocket was launched from and then launch a hellfire to impact that exact spot.

Why do we piss around with these barbarians?

That was Krauthammer's suggestion last year. Install a system that automatically pinpoints and destroys the site from which a Kassam was fired. No human intervention. Let the paleostinians know that this will happen automatically, EVERY TIME a Kassam is launched.

Either the paleos will eventually get fed up with being turned into smoking craters for the benefit of Hamas, or eventually there will be no more paleostinians.

That's what's known as a win-win.

"No sweat War Chief". No apology necessary, you were far more reserved and far less abrasive than I am used to, I just didn't want any misunderstanding to exist between us. And thank you kindly for the warm welcome.

On the MSM: I know shit when I smell it, but without a counter-point to the BS I have no way of putting my finger on it, so to speak. LGF and the Lizard Army has been a great counter-point to the stink I've been getting from the MSM regarding the WOT, Islam, and so on.

Ignorance can be cured with proper and regular applications of knowledge and information; stupid, sadly, is forever. I hope to viewed as far more of the former and much less of the latter here.

Well it looks like the Moonbats have won and forced the Army to dump their gas guzzling Hummers for hybrids.

Sort of. ;-)

Army Vehicle Could Be Iraq's First Hybrid

The new, second-generation prototype will still utilize the same basic chassis and exterior design for light-duty capacity. But the Army’s auto research arm -- part of the Tank Automotive Research, Development and Engineering Center (TARDEC) -- has developed a battery-dominant, hybrid-electric drivetrain with a diesel engine-generator. That could make the new Aggressor the first hybrid to hit the streets of Baghdad en masse.

A wider, 66-in. body design makes room for high-performance acceleration -- as military vehicles go -- with the second-gen Aggressor set to rev from 0-40 mph in four seconds and top out at 80 mph. But speed is not the main attraction here; stealth is. The Aggressor’s design provides battery-only operations, allowing it to switch into “silent mode” with a reduced thermal signature. Combine that with extended range and exportable power, and this should be one tough-to-detect AMV for missions involving communications, surveillance and targeting.

If the greenies only knew their push for hybrids would create a more efficient lethal killing machine they'd have stuck with their gas hogs.

re: #240 republic

Just as a curiosity question. Have either Paul Murdoch (the architect) or John Reynolds (project chairman) ever been involved in anything leaning to any pro-Islamist causes? After reading the linked article there seems to be a lot of bizarre; perhaps coincidental, perhaps not, facets of this project. Although I am a believer in coincidences, there are to many factors at play here to rule all of them a coincidence.
I've googled around for anything on Paul Murdoch and all I can really find is a tendency of his firm to go eco-friendly when designing structures.
What do you think would cause either him or Reynolds to go this Islam sympathetic route in such an American face slapping way?

re: #284 Geepers

Whatever will they do when they are faced with the fact that tomorrow's most efficient, affordable commercial hybrids are born from today's military efforts? Likely ignore it, I suppose, just as they ignore the fact that most of today's modern convinces, scientific/technological and medical advances were born of yesterday's military struggles.

War is at times a necessity, and necessity can be a mother!

I'm not sure how this works now. I mean, the 70 virgins are definitely out, but does the guy get at least a little something for the effort? Maybe his choice of a Barbara Boxer impersonator or a $2 ho?

Why can't such farklin idiots just use a dull knife to slit open their own throats, while screaming something to the tune of 'Allahu Kackbar' and void scaring tourists?
