How've YOU been?

36 tokyobk  Mon, Aug 13, 2007 6:27:41pm

It would be so fun to have a second, more rabid, scok-puppet nic. But, such a precious commodity as access to posting here must be shared equally. Speaking of precious resources, here is the long-term solution to the Wahabbi threat from our fake allies:

TOKYO (Nikkei)--A government-affiliated research institute has developed technology for creating a diesel fuel from materials such as grass cuttings and wood chips, The Nikkei learned Monday.

Although similar technology exists for bioethanol fuel for gasoline cars, this is said to be a world first for diesel vehicles.

The Research Institute of Innovative Technology for the Earth is aiming for commercial production in three years. RITE was established in 1990 by the government and leading Japanese firms in such industries as automobiles and power.

The biodiesel fuel in question uses a type of alcohol known as butanol made using genetically modified microorganisms. The biobutanol was created by cultivating a large number of these microbes in a vat and adding sugar produced by breaking down such plant fibers as grass and tree cuttings, wood, and rice straw.

Light oil is generally used in diesel fuel. But in testing commissioned by RITE, Honda Motor Co. (7267) subsidiary Honda R&D Co. confirmed negligible effects on vehicle performance when biobutanol was mixed with light oil.

RITE sees the biofuel as key to cutting greenhouse gases emitted from diesel vehicles. Once mass production begins, the fuel is seen costing almost the same to produce as bioethanol for gasoline-powered cars.

Demand for biofuels made from plants is expected to grow because they help curb carbon dioxide emissions. But to date, biodiesel fuels have been made from materials like coconut and tempura oils. There has thus been fierce competition among RITE, BP Plc of the U.K., DuPont of the U.S., and others to create a biodiesel fuel from plants. RITE has already applied for an international patent on the technology.

A 23-year old Jewish woman was attacked and beaten in Paris.

A 23-year-old Jewish woman was attacked in Paris this week by two masked men of African descent, who beat her up and uttered anti-Semitic slurs, the Jewish Agency reported Monday.

Following the attack the young woman needed medical treatment. The local police launched an investigation into the incident.

The Jewish Agency further reported that another anti-Semitic incident took place in the French capital two weeks ago, when a young haredi man was battered by a cab driver.

According to the report, the youth was on his way to the synagogue with his brother-in-law and nephew, when the driver began shouting anti-Semitic slurs at them.

Smart move, Charles. We all know higher education is contaminated.

I politely take issue with the above mentioned comment. If anything, my awareness of the world around myself has become more critical because of the education that I have received. What's not taught is what I call pure logic, the kind of common sense that is mocked and derided at these institutions. If anything, it has made me more aware of how weak and pathetic their arguments and assumptions are without context and merit. That being said, they are idiots! Logic and reason mixed with information and knowledge will overcome their baseless and inane assertions.

A translation of the above comment reads as such:

You are wrong. I am right. Or I am wrong...OH Crap! Headache. That paragraph killed a couple of neurons! Here comes the big Headache!

I had a thought today about the woman who opened her Rolodex and we were going to find out who all the people were who called her "escort service". This was in order for her to pay her lawyers, of course.
Well, anyway, did I miss something? The only person that I heard of who got caught in that big news story was one Senator from Louisiana, a Republican.
I never heard of anyone else and the story has moved off the news.
Could it be there were some Democrats and we never found out?
I thought there were lawyers upon lawyers going through these pages like Sherman marching through Georgia?
What happened? Nothing? I guess it could have been printed on the 19th or so pages of the NY Times?
Wow! A spell checker - this is awesome.

Woman calls police about 'fake' cocaine

ROCHELLE, Ga. - A woman was arrested after she called police to help "get her money back" after she was unhappy with the crack cocaine she purchased.

Juanita Marie Jones, 53, called Rochelle Police late Thursday night after she purchased what she thought was a $20 piece of crack cocaine, according to police reports.

She told officers she broke the rock into three pieces and smoked one, only to discover the drugs were "fake."

She took Officer Joel Quinn and Deputy John Shedd of the Wilcox County Sheriff's Office into her kitchen and showed them the drugs, police said.

She was promptly arrested on charges of possession of cocaine.

In that case I would have put a huge picture of me enjoying some food on my desk. Though I don't dine on swine myself, I wouldn't be opposed to having pig in the picture.

It's a matter of principle not a matter of tolerance. When I eat it is my private space I'm eating in. If this was because admins just don't want food there ever then fine but that was not the case. It's not intolerant to eat in front of self imposed hungry people. Although it might be a bit rude.

Shoving food down their throats would be intolerance. Teasing them about it would be intolerance. This doesn't come close.

VERY popular at his location. We will have it available soon, I promise, for mail order. We need the bottling, license, all the legal stuff.

Every so often I'll mine the UN website for stupid statements from stupid people. It never takes very long. Heres a good one about the looming humanitarian crisis in Gaza.

A senior United Nations official today appealed to the Palestinian authorities, Israel and all other parties to take immediate steps to re-open a major crossing between Israel and the Gaza Strip to reverse a rapidly worsening economic, humanitarian and political situation.

“Failure to do this will lead to disastrous consequences: an atmosphere of hopelessness and despair in which extremism is likely to take hold,”

Be nice to Hamas or extremism might take hold in Gaza? Go back to the buffet table and reload on the cornbread you big dummy.

I remember she was Amilie sometimes, whatever fancy struck her at the time. Lived in Colorado and moved didn't she?

226 Tigger2005  Mon, Aug 13, 2007 7:17:18pm

There is something that confuses me. A couple things, actually.

I have been reading the Harry Potter books, although not in order (I've seen the movies so far, so I guess it doesn't matter that much what order I read them in). I read Goblet of Fire and Order of the Phoenix, then skipped ahead to read Deathly Hallows, and just finished Half-Blood Prince.

Here's what I don't understand:

I've heard that a lot of fundamentalist Christians don't like the Potter books, I guess because of the whole witches and warlocks and magic thing. But Christians lined up in droves to see the film of C.S. Lewis' Christian allegory "The Lion, the Witch, and the Wardrobe," which contains plenty of magic, sorcery, etc. And I haven't heard of that many complaints from Christians about Catholic J.R.R. Tolkien's "Lord of the Rings" or the films.

Disliking Potter just because J.K. Rowling sets her story in a world of wizardry and witchcraft seems incredibly silly and shallow to me. Christian allegories have been set in worlds of myth and magic since the Middle Ages.

Furthermore, the themes of the Potter books ... friendship, loyalty, steadfastness, courage, genuine, self-sacrificing love, resolution in the face of evil ... would seem to be exactly what conservative and fundamentalist Christians are saying there's not enough of in the West these days. (Heck, it's what us Lizards, Christians and otherwise, think there's not enough of in the West these days.) Why would they have a problem with kids learning about this stuff while following Harry through his magical adventures?

Now, the other thing I don't understand:

J.K. Rowling says she's a liberal.

But I can't find anything liberal in the Potter books. Heck, there's less liberal stuff you can draw out of HP than you can out of Lord of the Rings (lots of people find environmental and anti-industrial messages in LotR, and of course it was big with the hippie crowd in the 60's).

Voldemort is pure evil. He can't be redeemed, he must be killed, Dumbledore and Harry know it, Harry wants very much to do it, and Dumbledore has no problem with that. Harry, despite being brought up unloved, has boundless love and loyalty. He is steadfast and dedicated to his calling (which he enters into with much less reluctance than Frodo in LotR). And "greater love has no man than this, that he lays down his life for his friends." Ultimately, his devotion to his friends is absolute, yet even at the greatest extremes, he refuses to kill needlessly (as when he uses the Expelliarmus (disarming) curse, rather than the Avada Kedavra killing curse, on a pursuer he knows to be under the Imperius (magical control) curse.

I don't get what's liberal about any of this. J.K. Rowling's vision of good and evil is very much the conservative view, yet she aligns herself with those for whom most everything is relative.

Confusing!

Some fundamentalist Christians (I don't know what percentage) believe the Harry Potter series books might lead to children becoming more and more interested in the world of witchcraft. Witchcraft is a "no-no" in the Bible's Old and New Testaments, (Isaiah 15:23 and Galations 5:20).
Although reading the Harry Potter books is not the same as "practicing" witchcraft, (and the stories are fictional), nevertheless some people are concerned that continued general interest in the witchcraft subject might eventually lead to actual involvement . . . Well, that's certainly where it's up to the parents to teach their children the difference between reality and fantasy isn't it?

Interestingly enough, one thing the Bible goes very hard on is the practice of divination (predicting the future). And in HP, Harry's Divination teacher, Professor Trelawney, is portrayed as a drunk and a fraud, and the whole field of divination, from tea leaves to card reading to astrology, is presented as a joke, even the characters think it's mostly worthless. On the extremely rare occasions that Trelawney gives an accurate prophecy, she can't even remember doing it.

The articles I've read against the Potter series is more along the "slippery slope" lines and cautions against children being swept away into thinking anything to do with witchcraft is nifty. Seeing people happily wait for hours, in costume, starstruck, certainly gives that viewpoint credence.

They have the right to their opinion, and their viewpoint is certainly filtered through the lens of their belief system. I'm not even sure why "fundamentalist" is tacked on to the Christian label. If one is not a Christian, I can see where it would be confusing.

People tack on "fundamentalist" to Christian because Christians vary in the degree to which they practice their religion. Some people go to church every sunday and give to the offering but can care less about what two adults do in the privacy of their own homes. Then you have the bible thumpers who go out and protest everything under the sun that doesn't match their belief system.

re: #226 Tigger2005

Well, stuff like how the Ministry of Magic is a bumbling, useless, intrusive entity, and Christmas but no Christ; it's just there as background. Not so much liberal as literal. :-)

I'm a very conservative Christian, and I read these to my kids. We talked about good vs evil, friendship, cheating, and not taking out your moodiness on others. I agree, she's sending conflicting messages, but like a lot of Christians I know, we went through it with our kids on our own terms and instructed them on our values while we enjoyed some very good fiction. We're finding as the kids grow up that real people make better heroes, even if they're flawed... Local guys who're back from the war, or our volunteer firefighters. Local politicians, not so much. :-/

Eggs may come in many sizes
Eggs could hold some big surprises

Speckled, plaid, red ,or blue
Eggs hatch lizards that are new

Yet trolls will hatch, and if they yammer
They will be met with Nekama's Hammer.

"BWAAA-HA-HA-HA!" Very nice.

re: #280 Tigger2005

my main objection to the Potter bokks is that they are poorly written.

example: they use owls to send mail, the owls can find anyone, but there are people that no one knows where they are and are being looked for.
send an owl and follow it, or send an owl-bomb to them.

there are other examples of failed logic.

I've not read any of the Harry Potter series (I'm much more of a space-opera type myself) but looking at your argument about owls here... I don't think that's "failed logic" or "poor writing" particularly. I think it's probably more a matter of the author leaving some unwritten assumptions unsaid, and expecting anyone that is curious about that to maybe fill in the blanks themselves.

My own guess is, the author figures the owls are psychic in regard to finding people. Which is to say, an owl can find a person even when that person doesn't himself know where he is!

That's not "failed logic," that's not "poor writing," that's just leaving a low-level (under the floor) piece of information out that they reader might or might not be able extrapolate for his or herself.

It would only be "failed logic" or "poor writing" if the owls were not consistent on the circumstances under which they could find, or not find, a given person.
