Dark Ages Rising in Malaysia

Mon, Aug 20, 2007 at 1:33:26 pm PDT

Islam’s war on sin dims bright lights in a nation torn between cultures.

To the south, in Kuala Lumpur, the capital, celebrations are starting for Malaysia’s 50th year as an independent state. Its proud achievements are modern universities, a buoyant economy and a respected place in the world as a moderate Islamic nation.

State minister Takiyuddin Hassan’s party boasts a different set of achievements: banning mini-skirts, chastising unmarried couples and renaming Kota Bharu’s favourite beauty spot. They also closed down nightclubs, banned nearly all bars except a few Chinese restaurants, where no Muslims are allowed, and refused to let a proposed cinema open unless there were separate sections for men and women.

In a sign of their clout, the American pop diva Gwen Stefani has agreed to wear traditional costumes in her Malaysian concert next week after conservative Muslim youths protested at the “indecent dressing and obscenity” of her skin-baring act. An Islamic opposition party demanded that her show next Tuesday should be cancelled. The platinum blonde star has agreed to cover up in the hope of heading off further protests.

As it celebrates 50 years of independence on August 31, Malaysia is once again debating just how Islamic it should be. Older Malays bemoan a younger generation that has become puritanical, self-righteously declining to attend social functions where alcohol is served. Headscarves, rare 20 years ago, are worn by almost all Malay women now, although often in combination with tight jeans.

As for Mr Hassan, a moderate who was once a lawyer, he is proud of his party’s achievements in Kota Bharu. He says that it has kept the rustic capital of Kelantan state upright and clean-living. The biggest building in the city is a gigantic headquarters decorated with concrete Korans where the moral enforcement department is based. Its bearded officials spend much of their time prowling parks in Kota Bharu in search of amorous young sinners.

Nothing worse than being torn between cultures.

Imagine the distress for the Austrians during the Anschlus - "we don't have a national flag anymore, but we can send our Jewish residents away forever".

Torn between cultures.

#5: My thoughts exactly - she should cancel her concert immediately and refuse to perform in a country that so completely subjugates women. Any country that has a "moral enforcement department" sounds like a scary and inhumane place to me, and Americans of all stripes should boycott.

As we speak, my fiancee is back in Kuala Lumpur visiting family and attending the 50th anniversary celebrations. She doesn't always understand why Americans feel the way we do about the rising tide of Islam and illegal immigration. Moreover, she always points to Malaysia (of 25 years ago) and insists that coexistence is possible.

Good grief. I sometimes wonder if it's too late to call off the wedding.

This doesn't surprise me. When I was in grad school, my department had an exchange program with Malaysia. Grad students from Malaysia who had never worn scarves or been particularly religious came here and either became extremely conservative, or found themselves targeted by the religiously conservative Malaysian Student Union (and their pal in the embassy). Those who complied, stayed. Those who did not were sent back to Malaysia.

And that was in the early 80s.

If I am not mistaken, isn't the child-molesting singer Akon going on this tour also? Also if I am not mistaken, Akon is a Muslim. I wonder how many protests there have been about his lewd behavior with minor children onstage.

I'm wracking my brain for a majority-muslim country where this kind of behavior isn't either the accepted style or the legal mandate, and I'm coming up empty. To be a muslim country is to strive toward sharia - it's as simple as that. And yet, there are those who will argue that such outrages, perversions of justice and international crimes can only be attributed to the nations themselves, and not to the religion or the culture as a whole. I say: what is the common denominator here?

Venezuela oil chief in Argentina quits over suitcase scandal

CARACAS, Venezuela -- The top official in Argentina for Venezuela's state oil company has resigned, a new casualty in a scandal over a suitcase of cash found with a passenger on a flight of Argentine and Venezuelan oil executives.

Petroleos de Venezuela on Friday said it accepted the resignation of Diego Uzcategui Matheus, the president of PDVSA's Argentine unit.

The executive's son, Daniel Uzcategui Spetch, and officials from PDVSA were aboard the government-chartered flight with a Venezuelan-American businessman who brought US$800,000 undeclared cash into Argentina on Aug. 4 and abandoned it when customs officials found the money.

Local news media have reported that Uzcategui Spetch several times accompanied the businessman, Alejandro Antonini Wilson, in trips around South America.

The scandal that has rattled both the Argentine and Venezuelan governments, whose officials have denied any links to Antonini.

Suitcase of cash shows Chávez's ways

After years of speculation that Venezuelan President Hugo Chávez has used petrodollars to finance presidential candidates or support loyalists in Latin America, the latest political scandal surrounding a suitcase with nearly $800,000 in cash seized at the Argentine capital's airport speaks for itself.

You may remember that in the most recent elections in Bolivia, Ecuador and Nicaragua, among other countries, there were widespread opposition claims that pro-Chávez candidates had received suitcases filled with cash from Venezuela's state-owned PDVSA oil company, courtesy of that country's narcissist-Leninist leader. The pro-Chávez winners of these elections have repeatedly dismissed such claims as U.S. imperialist lies.

But the case of Guido Alejandro Antonini Wilson, the Venezuelan businessman traveling with a PDVSA delegation to Argentina on Aug. 4, is the clearest illustration I have seen of some of the obscure ways in which Venezuela is trying to influence other countries' political life, and about how it spreads its massive corruption to countries in the region.

Yes, but the potential exists for sharia law to creep on in. The article states:

Older Malays bemoan a younger generation that has become puritanical, self-righteously declining to attend social functions where alcohol is served. Headscarves, rare 20 years ago, are worn by almost all Malay women now, although often in combination with tight jeans.

Weren't Iranian women wearing jeans until recently? I think they still do, but now they are being required to cover up any hint of a feminine shape, or they are taken away by the police.

36 Ben Hur  Mon, Aug 20, 2007 1:52:50pm

Golem Akbar: I suspected you weren't being sarcastic - I only hope you're right and that their tourism DOES suffer, rather than being built up by the PC crowd that thinks it's ok to give American dollars to such a place. Banning mini-skirts, prowling local parks for young couples, closing night clubs - all dangerous first steps on the road to totalitarianism and slavery.

On a separate thread, I commented on a documentary Christiane Amanpour is working on, in which she compared an American Christian group that encourages teenage girls to wear longer skirts to the Taliban - and questioned how the two are different. THOSE are the types that will continue to offer tourism dollars to Malaysia.

Feminists see Islamists as knuckle dragging men. But they see fighting Islamists as the knuckle dragging male reaction. Most feminists I know (3 of 4 sisters are self identified feminists) think that women are much smarter than men and that they would simply outsmart Islamists if women were in power.

When reduced to actionable details, the "outsmarting" usually involves handing Islamists power, handing them Israel, and then disarming the US military. Pretty smart, eh? Lots of history to support their plans ( /s )

You see - then we don't threaten Islamists they will behave nicely. Men are like dogs and other dumb animals.

Feminism = sexism.

Christiane Amanpour is working on, in which she compared an American Christian group that encourages teenage girls to wear longer skirts to the Taliban -

When American Christian groups start infibulating young girls and toppling walls on homosexuals, then I'd agree she has a point.

She should STFU.

Bitch.

My Church has a post college program of in depth Bible study for 2 years. It has a dress code. White shirts and dark blue or black trousers, subdued ties, black shined shoes, short hair cuts. For women white blouses, black or dark blue LONG skirts, and horror of horrors a symbolic head covering when in meetings, often a white handkerchief folded in a triangle and held in place with a bobby pin.

Yes sirrie bob, I am the American Taliban.

Malaysia's State Department Summary on Human Trafficking from 2005:

MALAYSIA (TIER 2)

Malaysia is a destination and, to a lesser extent, a source and transit country for men and women trafficked for the purposes of sexual exploitation and forced labor. As many as several thousand women from Thailand, Indonesia, the People’s Republic of China (P.R.C.), Cambodia, and Burma are trafficked to Malaysia for commercial sexual exploitation. Additionally, some economic migrants from Indonesia who work as domestic servants and as laborers in the construction and agricultural sectors face exploitative conditions in Malaysia that meet the definition of involuntary servitude. Malaysian women (primarily of Chinese origin) are trafficked to Western Europe, North America, Australia, Japan, Singapore, and Taiwan.

The Government of Malaysia does not fully comply with the minimum standards for the elimination of trafficking; however, it is making significant efforts to do so. While the government took some steps to combat trafficking, Malaysia lacks comprehensive anti-trafficking legislation to enable officials to provide adequate victim protection and work effectively at the interagency level to combat trafficking in persons. The Ministry for Women, Family, and Community Development announced in December 2004 the establishment of a dedicated shelter for foreign trafficking victims. The National Human Rights Commission (Suhakam) drafted a national action plan on trafficking, though it has not yet been approved by the government. The Malaysian Government should screen illegal migrants detained for immigration violations to identify and provide care for trafficking victims that may be in their midst. The Malaysian Government should draft and enact a comprehensive trafficking law that recognizes trafficked men and women as victims and provides them with shelter, counseling, and assistance in repatriation.

jcm: Well, you have to admit, the line between asking teenage girls to please, if you could, maybe lengthen that miniskirt just a bit - and beheading a woman because she accidentally flashed an ankle to a non-related male - that line can be blurred PRETTY easily, it's just one babystep from one to the other. At least according to enlightened Christiane. You are SO RIGHT. Can you imagine if, say, she wanted to play somewhere in the Bible Belt, and they asked her (probably without even threatening to behead her or anything) if she could possibly dress a little more conservatively for a show in their town? She would LOSE IT. She would pitch a fit, and there'd be all kinds of media coverage about how her First Amendment right to show her crotch was being infringed, and she would be shocked, I tell you, shocked. 124 Ben Hur  Mon, Aug 20, 2007 2:45:25pm

This is a universal leftist problem.

In Israel, leftist women constantly harp about separation of the sexes at the Wall for example, yet when their late hero, Leah Rabin, saw no problem in gender apartheid on her trips to Arab countries. "It's their culture" she said after being herded into the women's bull pen for Hussein's funeral.

They flipped out when Bat Sheva dance company, that can't perform ONE dance performance without stripping to their underwear, was asked not to perform a certain number (the dancers stripping to lyrics of the Passover Hagadah) at the Wall for a Jerusalem celebration (with VP Gore in the front row).

Yet when international ISraeli singer Noa, performed for Pope John Paul II half naked, no one (not even the singer) was upset that after her performance 5 people had to just about tackle her to cover her with a blanket before she made it to the Pontiff.

Again, there:culture. here: relgious imposition.

re: #158 buzzsawmonkey

re: #126 jcm

Looking at films which do not seem old to me, but which I realize are now 40 years old or more, the assumption of marriage before sex, and of virginity at the time of marriage, was common. In fact, the preservation of virginity and the achievement of marriage drives most of the action in these films--and that portion of the action which does not concern them concerns how people who do not conform to this standard can or should behave, and how they attempt to salvage their lives and reputations if they do not.

The assumption in the vast majority of today's films seems to be that virginity is shameful or risible, and sex without any commitment beyond sharing next morning's orange juice a reasonable expectation, if not a right.

It's been quite a change.

40 year mark is significant, the 60's. That's when the major fault line in society appeared. I think my favorite movie How Green was my Valley is about DUTY. The 60's was about ME. IMHO DUTY is a forgotten part of education and social discussion.

The DUTY to care for family, specifically children.
The DUTY to be a good citizen.
The DUTY to contribute to society.

In regard to duty, let me, in conclusion of this hasty letter, inform you that nearly a hundred years ago there was a day of remarkable gloom and darkness -- still known as "the dark day" -- a day when the light of the sun was slowly extinguished, as if by an eclipse.

The Legislature of Connecticut was in session, and as its members saw the unexpected and unaccountable darkness coming on, they shared in general awe and terror. It was supposed by many that the last day -- the day of judgment -- had come. Some one, in the consternation of the hour, moved an adjournment.

Then there arose an old Puritan legislator, Davenport, of Stamford, and said that, if the last day had come, he desired to be found at his place doing his duty, and therefore moved that candles be brought in, so that the House could proceed with its duty.

There was quietness in that man's mind, the quietness of heavenly wisdom and inflexible willingness to obey present duty. Duty, then, is the sublimest word in our language. Do your duty in all things like the old Puritan. You cannot do more; you should never wish to do less. Never let your mother or me wear one gray hair for any lack of duty on your part.

my advice is be prepared to be an outcast in law school. If this is the way you perceive America and the law, which I did and do (though I disagree with some of your imagery), you will be ridiculed or dismissed as a loony "leftist" in law school. The vast majority of your colleagues are attending law school to be rich professionals and could care less about changing the world. The best and brightest will go to work as corporate enablers and the remainder will cut their teeth in family or criminal law. Save your money, unless someone else is paying for your education, in which case lucky you.

Tajikistan convicts two ex-Gitmo detainees

DUSHANBE: Tajikistan handed down 17-year prison sentences on Saturday to two former Guantanamo Bay detainees convicted of fighting alongside Taliban forces in Afghanistan.

Both men were detained by the US military in Afghanistan in 2001 and held in the Guantanamo military prison for five years before being returned to their home country to face charges of being mercenaries in a foreign country.

A Supreme Court judge said the men had belonged to the Islamic Movement of Uzbekistan, a militant group active in Central Asia in the late 1990s. IMU guerrillas fought alongside Taliban forces in Afghanistan but the group was largely destroyed by the US-led military campaign there in 2001.

“Tajik citizens Mukit Vokhidov and Rukhniddin Sharopov were found guilty of mercenary activity and illegally crossing state borders,” presiding judge Musammir Urakov told reporters.

He said the men would serve their sentences in a penal colony.

Tajikistan, a Muslim nation of 7 million in Central Asia, shares a 1,340 km (840 mile) border with Afghanistan. The ex-Soviet country remains flooded with weapons after a 1992-97 civil war between Islamist guerrillas and the secular government in which more than 100,000 people were killed.

The foreign ministry says at least 10 Tajik citizens are being held in Guantanamo Bay, most of them detained by US troops in Afghanistan on suspicion of involvement with the Taliban or al-Qaeda.

In the last five years, about 70 suspected members of the IMU have been arrested in Tajikistan. Most were put on trial and received sentences of between 15 and 25 years. reuters

Count me as one agnostic/atheist who proudly points to religious pluralism in this country.

It doesn't appeal to all the kids in our church. It is utterly voluntary. It maintains a dress code the attendees agree to before going.

The thing about the New Testament that many miss including Christians is that regulation (the law) has been replaced. THERE IS NO LAW OR REGULATIONS in Christianity. Christians are governed by their spiritual relationship with God. Any Christian that tell you how things should be done, is missing the point.

Defining the beginning and end to the 60's will take a few beers to short out. Would be fun to hash it out. Summer of Love 67' was definitely the "high point" or should I say low point. How ever you define it, it was seismic and we are still feeling and paying for the aftershocks.

The irony of this Gwen Stefani incident is that it's the conservatives in the west that are telling her that she should wear what she wants. Contrast that with no complaints from western "Liberals" about the censorship. On top of that the media calls the Islamist "conservatives." What ever they are conserving over there it's not freedom.

Move to win Muslim youths

LAHORE: The US State Department is launching what it says will be the first comprehensive public diplomacy effort targeting children, hoping to shape the views of Muslim youths ages 8 to 14 with a series of summer camps and enrichment programs designed to counter negative images of the US, The Boston Globe reported on Monday.

The report said the new initiative was the brainchild of Karen Hughes, a confidante of President Bush who has become the most powerful public-diplomacy czar in decades. Hughes has argued forcefully that the US government must reach out to children younger than age 14, a population the State Department has largely neglected because they are too young for traditional exchange programmes.

“By the time kids get to high school, their impressions are already pretty well shaped,” Hughes said in an interview. She said she began to plan the initiative last year when she realized that the US government’s programmes for young people “weren’t reaching down really young enough”.

As a test of her idea, Hughes asked embassies in 14 Islamic countries this summer to come up with pilot programmes for that age bracket, and spent nearly $1 million on projects that involved about 6,000 youths and hundreds of local partnering organisations. Participants included more than 2,000 girls in Turkey who attended a basketball camp and 80 children from rural schools in Malaysia who learned about Thomas Jefferson and other US heroes on an American-style camping trip with embassy staff and families.

LGF crowd, they're a sexually repressed mass of warmongering chicken hawks
Because the majority of our Servicemen are liberals.

Because liberals serve.

They want the right to give moral support and encouragement to terrorists, but can't stand anybody that supports our military.

The liberal solution to every problem is to just pretend it isn't a problem. The way to win the war on drugs is to make drugs legal. Illegal aliens? Why just make them all legal......problem solved.

Heck, by their way of thinking, maybe if a Football team isn't very good, they can just start wanting to lose. That way, when they lose, they won't feel bad because they wanted to lose going into it.

There is basically no problem that can't be solved by just lowering the standards. Illiteracy? We can just make a 5th grade reading level a 12th grade reading level. That way, just think about all those graduating 12th graders that will be reading at a 12th grade reading level. That's the ticket. Iran building nukes and threatening us? Why, we can just arm them ourselves or not worry about what they are doing? That way they will no longer be buidling them against our wishes. We can be in favor of it......problem solved!

Except for here, I can find hardly a word about it, anywhere.

I even went to her official website, (not a fan, never was, never will be). Mentions the show in question, but nothing else. And...unlike a lot of artists, her website has no forum/blog. There was a Q-n-A type thing that required registration. But it only had three questions in it, and the responses were all third person...

Gwen also has a MySpace page. Tour date, but no Islamic Femophobia mentions...and a lot of stalker spam...

It didn't first strike me as being about voyeurism. When I first read the phrase, it sounded like a description of someone who was prowling the parks looking for a partner with whom to sin, amorous-wise. Then I realized that would be unusual for a bearded cleric, and I had to re-read the sentence and adjust my interpretation.

Yeah, it was a good trip to scout locations and catch some salmon. It's going to be tough to find just the right house but I have an idea of what area I want to be in. I might even be able to get a place with high speed internet.

High speed internet? Are you kidding me?

I had to start fires rubbing twigs together. I had to take a bath in the lake. I had to dry my socks over a fire.

8 Indians injured in possible racist attack in Germany

BERLIN: Eight Indian men were injured in a possible racist attack by about 50 Germans at a fair in eastern Germany over the weekend, police said Monday. Four assailants and two police officers were also injured in the incident in the town of Muegeln, which started with a scuffle on the dance floor of a party tent in the early hours of Sunday. “A group of about 50 Germans and several onlookers then chased the escaping Indians across the market square,” said Ilka Peter, a spokeswoman for police in nearby Leipzig. The Indians sought shelter in a pizza parlour run by an Indian, but some of the Germans kicked in the doors of the building and beat them up, she said. “We were told that some people were shouting ‘foreigners get out,’ but we don’t know if those slurs came from the onlookers or the attackers,” Peter said, adding that 70 police officers were needed to bring the situation under control. Two suspects were detained after the attack but later released. One Indian man remained hospitalised Monday, Peter said. Muegeln mayor Gotthard Deuse said on MDR television that the incident may have had a racist motivation. However, he contended that “if this was a far-right incident, then the assailants did not come from Muegeln.” Peter said police were told before the fair that right-wing extremists were planning an attack on a youth centre in Muegeln, but the club was not targeted. The Indian men are mostly merchants who sell goods at open markets in the region, Peter said. ap

A hunka hunka burnin' love

Elvis Presley’s black 9mm Smith & Wesson pistol has left the building.

Graceland has reported to Memphis police that a man removed the pistol from a display case at the “Elvis after Dark” museum across the street from the mansion late on the night of Aug. 14.

Surveillance video shows the man stealing the gun. The theft was not discovered until Friday when a visitor noticed a glass panel on the display case was unfastened and Graceland officials reviewed the video.

Anyone with information is asked to contact the police at 901-545-4559 or Crime Stoppers at 901-528-CASH.

Now, I understand why you were confused the other night. I must have been pooped because that does read like I'm the mother. LOL.

No, Elizabeth Edwards is the mom who lost a child and still has two.

My fault...sorry about that.

I just came back from the Madrassa Rally downtown on Chambers Street.
I got some pics which I'll post shortly. Crazy Rabbi Feinberg said the ousted jihad teacher Almontaser couldn't come to the rally because she is worried about her personal security. LOL I swear!

Lots of blah blah, poor us.. poor Arabs, so discriminated against. Feinberg also said Stop the Madrassa, the UAC and GoE were pretty much pro-war, racist, fascist organizations... lots of boos for Giuliani and the NY Post and Weingarten from the UFT who came out against the INTIFADA NYC. Poor them, the whole world is racist against them. the NYC INTIFADA was just a big misunderstanding.... but a legitimate struggle for poor poor them.... get me a violin!

Look forward to the pictures. I'm offended though. They didn't mention me?

For not being loony enough. Should a Dem win the Presidency they will really go ballistic because I don’t think they will actually surrender Iraq. Such a fiasco would leave a hell of a legacy. Hillary is already saying it would take almost two years to withdraw. The other candidates are falling all over themselves to prove they would bug out quicker than the other guy but that’s because they are still playing to the nut root base. Hillary figures she has the nomination all wrapped up and is playing to the center.

The story is a Puff piece for Rudy by American Spectator, which is one of my regular mags. J. Rubin is normally pretty objective, Rudy musta just swept her off her feet.

While he was mayor of NYC, she sued the US Government to prevent the dismantling of Ed Koch/David Dinkin's policies that had effectively turn NYC into a sanctuary city for illegals. Geraldo was defending the policies today during his run-in on Laura Ingram's show.

The story above doesn't even touch on any of this, just that Rudy is gonna be the Tough Border Guard.
Because of what he says.
Now.
Not because of what he actually did.
And most of what he wants to do has with issuing biometric ID cards and tougher policies.

The reason that Rudy can get away with this is that he does what he says he will, one of his 12 commitments speaks directly to the problem. If it were another candidate, then you bet they would pull that out. However this is Rudy, and he's made a commitment. You can count on it.
