WebSense Blocking LGF Again?

Mon, Sep 3, 2007 at 11:26:23 am PDT

I’ve been receiving reports that the WebSense content filtering system, used by many large companies and government offices, has begun blocking LGF ... again, after removing a previous incorrect block. Any LGF readers who experience this, please report it here or send me an email with our contact form. And any readers with a WebSense account, please let me know which category they’ve placed us in this time.

  • Comments are open and unmoderated, and do not necessarily reflect the views of Little Green Footballs.
  • Obscene, abusive, silly, or annoying remarks may be deleted, but the fact that particular comments remain on the site in no way constitutes an endorsement of their views by Little Green Footballs.
  • Posts that contain phone numbers, street addresses, email addresses or other personal information will also be deleted, as will posts that consist only of a variation on the word, "First!"
  • Comments that advocate violence will be cause for immediate banning with no appeal.
  • Disagreement and debate are welcome, but insults and abuse are not, and may cause your account to be blocked.
  • REMEMBER: posting comments at LGF is a privilege, not a right. Abuse that privilege, and your account will be blocked.

I'm for once loving the internet filter.

Can still get LGF just fine (obviously)

I guess I've been lucky there; nothing has been blocked in my ISP...

Works fine from Sprint, but I did not say that

I thought people worked at work - that's why they call it work. What is all the surfing the net and blogging?

Americans are the hardest working folks in the world.

GENEVA - American workers stay longer in the office, at the factory or on the farm than their counterparts in Europe and most other rich nations, and they produce more per person over the year.

They also get more done per hour than everyone but the Norwegians, according to a U.N. report released Monday, which said the United States "leads the world in labor productivity."

The average U.S. worker produces $63,885 of wealth per year, more than their counterparts in all other countries, the International Labor Organization said in its report. Ireland comes in second at $55,986, followed by Luxembourg at $55,641, Belgium at $55,235 and France at $54,609.

31 Charles  Mon, Sep 3, 2007 11:57:02am

By the way, from the last incident I learned that the block may take a little while to reach all their subscribers -- it depends on when the subscriber updates the WebSense database.

Where I work the security folks do their own list -- they apply a consistent policy. So I can't get to liveleak, I can't get to Jerry Pournelle (it must be a personal blog because it uses a person's name) I can get to political blogs, like here, dkos etc.

Well...you can't just say,"I'll take the $64K job over there in that corner office with no internet blocking," and expect to actually get it...unless someone is actually offering it to you. Then again, if no one is offering you the job you want you could go out and create it for yourself. It's a little thing called initiative.

On the other hand, it's easier to just grouse about what a great deal everyone else has.

I should think WebSense would have put LGF in a third category by now: don't block it, but do tattle to the boss. Send the boss a report containing all of the "questionable" (read: politically incorrect) web sites that an employee has visited, but that WebSense can't block without looking like fascists.

Employees can't complain about what they don't know about, right?

71 1389  Mon, Sep 3, 2007 6:16:15pm

I’ve just put up a bunch of new info about blog censorship, especially with regard to Websense.

Here’s a category link that I’ve set up, to provide rolling updates on this topic:

[Link: 1389blog.com...]

Websense has a site lookup tool at [Link: www.websense.com...] - unfortunately, it requires registration, a policy which is highly objectionable in itself. So much for accountability to the public!

Contact info for Websense:

Websense Corporate Headquarters
Gene Hodges, CEO
Douglas C. Wride, President and CFO
10240 Sorrento Valley Rd
San Diego, California 92121 USA
Tel: +1 800.723.1166 or +1 858.320.8000
Fax: +1 858.458.2950

Websense Email Form (such as it is): [Link: www.websense.com...]

(Note: Websense does not accept the email form if sender's email address is on a web-based server, such as Yahoo. If that's a problem, then write or call them up and complain!)

Investor relations:
Kate Patterson, VP of Investor Relations
Tel: 877-273-7379 or 858-320-8072
Fax: 858-458-2959
Email: kpatterson@websense.com

Here's what I sent them, using their email form:

It has come to my attention that Websense is blocking the well-respected counterterrorist/antijihadist site, Little Green Footballs ([Link: littlegreenfootballs.com)....]

I have also noted that Websense requires registration in order to use the Site Lookup Tool. This is just plain wrong! It discourages public accountability by invading people's privacy in order to get the information about whether a site they want to access may be misclassified.

Little Green Footballs has been around for a long time. Charles Johnson, who runs the site, does not post or allow to be posted any bigoted or otherwise inappropriate content. It contains nothing that would make it objectionable even for the K-12 environment. Websense should classify it accordingly.

Sites such as Little Green Footballs also contain valuable security information that everybody should know, and that are useful in the corporate, academic, nonprofit, and government environments. In fact, I believe that anybody working at a government site, including state and local governments, as well as schools, should be REQUIRED to view counterterrorist and other security-related sites on a regular basis, because protecting everyone is part of their job!

Because they don't accept web-based email, I had to give them a different email address that I would much rather not have used.

1389

re: #67 carridine

Websense was down for two days. Knowing this my company decided to ambush our computers while we were off. They have really strict policies regarding web use. As I was being briefed as to why I was being terminated, two visited sites were mentioned, "Jihadi Watch" and "LGF". Normally these sites are blocked for "Racism and Hate".
By the way, I wasn't the only one to get canned that day.

73 cbinflux  Mon, Sep 3, 2007 8:49:56pm

re: #55 Daddyquatro

Yes, they've adopted a few default site settings from Websense, and they've blocked others that their employees abuse priveleges on.

My company utilizes a fairly restrictive version of WebSense and, well, here I am. I know that companies can also add websites to the WebSense list, so if the category says "-Blocked" then it's a company specific ban.
