I liked Rudy's responses. Romney did not impress me all that much. Tancredo seemed to trip over himself. Hunter didn't make much impression on me, but I gather from comments I missed much of his statements. I like Huckabee, but again he didn't have all that much to say.
McCain is sort of pathetic. Sad, really.

Here's a question for the mathematical Lizards ...
I was the first to vote -- I have to say I was surprised when I hit the button and saw "100%" for my choice -- then I saw the number of votes cast.
Now here's the question -- what effect do you think early votes have on the later ones, that is to say, if people look and see high percentages for one candidate (even if only a few votes have been cast) does that make it more or less likely that they too, if they are on the fence, will chose that candidate.
If more likely, then it would seem that the first one's to vote could have a significant influence on the outcome of the poll.
Thoughts?

Tancredo came on with a consistent message with a much stronger deliver y - well done.
I agree with the young woman at the NH diner . . .Rudy was repetitive, giving the same comparison to his performance as mayor of NYC to every single question. Nothing new . . .and not enough.
McCain simply appeared weary. It was nice, however to see a few candidates quote McCain in their answers and reflecting honorably on his service. McCain, however is done.
RP . . .good God . . .how the hell did he ever get on a Republican ticket?

Rudy's common-sense approaches just make sense! He didn't have control over NYC's federal immigration policies when he entered office. He did the best he could to protect the residents of that city.
THAT WAS HIS CHIEF DUTY...TO PROTECT THE RESIDENTS.
Compare NYC today and NYC during the last year of Dinkins.
It ain't about race. It's about accountability.

More than NYC? First of all, he did. His work at the DOJ was amazing. Second of all, if you lived in NYC pre-Rudy, you'd understand the staggering magnitude of what he accomplished. I don't see anyone running (in either party) who has accomplished more.

On FNC, the group of people they had watching the debate said that McCain won the night, and Rudy was the big disappointment . . . um - what?
NOT what I thought. McCain came across well, but Guiliani was relaxed and confident - he sounds like a leader, whereas McCain just sounds like a strong politician.
Mitt was a bit of a empty suit, to me. Huckabee had moments, but is too forced. Ron Paul is comic relief. The rest were just background noise.

Crime is down all over big cities in America, welfare has dropped, and he told Arafat and some rich Sheik who dissed America cuz he thought he could buy us to kiss his ass to name a few. But then again, I've never understood politics or politicians. I don't really care who wins right now, as long as Hillary Clinton doesn't become president. She's the Forrest Gump of Presidential Candidates. Oh, she's amusing as heck, but as a leader, sub-sub-par. And just really a shrew.

Mandy, I too am a Giuliani supporter. But McCain got it right tonight. Could get interesting.
McCain got some things right, I think he lost ground with the tax pledge answer, the torture question, and the amnesty grilling. He did have some strong answers on the war, and didn't go over the top like last debate.
I give him a pass on the torture so-called issue. I think he is thinking not backwards but forwards on this one and I'm not sure he is wrong in opposing such a public precedent. Frankly, the other things don't rock my boat much. We need, today, a leader who will not even hint at backing down from the enemy. The only right answer to the hypothetical is to state that torture isn't an acceptable practice, but if the absolute need for it ever arose that you as president would make the decision, sign the order, and beg for forgiveness after.
What I don't understand is why McCain thinks the terrorists won't torture just because we don't. That is STUPID.

Lady of Shalott (ylreveb) Wed, Sep 5, 2007 8:00:48pm |
I was stunned to hear McCain declare that he wouldn't use torture on a terror suspect even if we were threatened with a nuclear bombing of one of our cities.
That's just batshit.
I also disagree with him on the illegal alien question. The question they're all pussy-footing around is the one of culture: how many indigestible/unassimilated/different-values folks can we take in, without having our own culture unravel? We're seeing the effects of this already, especially in the Southwest. That's what has Americans wrapped around the axle about this.
It's interesting to me that the same folks who are sooo solicitous of the "cultures" of others are so eager to ashcan our own.
And, I'd love to hear these two words in Someone's presidential debate: AMERICAN CITIZENS (rather that the weaselly "people") and VICTORY.
Giuliani has to take his NYC platform and use it as a launching pad rather than the whole track. Nevertheless, I'll back him.

Me too. I just know Tancredo can't get elected, but he has great answer's for it all.
Rudy must have done something more than NYC?
More than NYC? First of all, he did. His work at the DOJ was amazing. Second of all, if you lived in NYC pre-Rudy, you'd understand the staggering magnitude of what he accomplished. I don't see anyone running (in either party) who has accomplished more.
I left New England in 1994 when the subway in NYC was dangerous south of 34th. My daughter was a broker for Morgan Stanley on the 54th floor of the South Tower and left for graduate school in 2000. Thank God! She think Rudy is everything because the city was a joy to be in, and I still get a very strange feeling from him. I remember his mob prosecutions. The man is lacking a moral compass. There, that's what I don't like about him.

Strategies on how to handle a war cannot be judged in election cycles.
Three months ago, his strategy was right, based on the information at the time.
And tonight, he didn't advocate anything that's necessarily wrong. Four or five month-old statements do not acknowledge the reality that wars are won on the basis of individual battles which change the picture every single day.

Looking at the poll results, Rudy wins the debate hands down. Is this because a preponderance of lizardoids are "reformed" liberals who woke up at 9/11 and saw Rudy's greatness? Or does it reflect a real chance Rudy has amongst Republicans in general to gain the candidacy? Lizardoids seem a mix of people, with a large proportion of committed hawkish Repubs, certainly, but also a large number of people who became more conservative post-9/11. Of course, underlying all, a lot of lizardoids would put the threat of Islamism and Jihad as the number one issue facing the West. This draws people from all different walks of life in, with all different worldviews, some more traditionally Republican and some less so. I hope Rudy wins the Repub nomination, and if lizardoids alone were voting it clearly seems he would, but will he win the candidacy among Republicans at large? I sure hope so! Honestly, I think he could win, if he wins the Repub nomination, because he would draw a lot of Dems away from Hillary.

I also wish the candidates would say clearly that the American citizens have the right to decide who's going to live with us in OUR country, and it trumps any "right" [nonexistent] of any foreigner to come here.
And it's not true that all illegal aliens come here "to be Americans." Most come to make more money than they can at home. Witness their Old Country parades, etc. They aren't like our earlier immigrants, who really did want to be American citizens, and were welcome.

We long for a competent President with the proof of a record of huge achievements in prologue to the Presidency. But we are not used to that happening.
Instead we are used to, and demand, frequently insincere promises from candidates.
When Giuliani proves by a recitation of his huge accomplishments that he is the man for the job, some voters get bored.
Promises and wishes are so much more appealing.

re: #155 WimbledonWomble
I've voted Republican in every election but one, starting with Nixon. The one non-republican vote was for the Libertarian in the election where Ronald Reagan was a forgone conclusion. I regret that to this very day -- I was sending a message that we needed fewer taxes in the stupid logic of my youth. Even though I knew he would absolutely win, I still regret to this day that I am not able to say that I voted twice for Ronald Reagan.

Duncan Hunter won as far as I'm concerned. I will vote either for him or Tancredo, no matter who gets the nomination. They are the only two who will fight against open borders, the North American Union and illegal immigration. To me that IS the most important issue. How can we have national security with open borders? I assure you all the other candidates are open border candidates no matter how they try to tapdance around the issue without really answering questions clearly.

Our election process has become an incredibly bad joke. It's enough to make one long for the days of smoke-filled rooms, hard-nosed realists and "the Public be damned."
The whole debate format is screwed. Lets have a series of one on one debates, elimination bouts with names drawn from a hat: Huckabee Vs. Tancredo, Paul Vs. Romney or whatever.
I want to hear statements logically argued, rebutted and defended, not a bunch of sound-bites. The current debate format does not allow for serious discussion.

Pull back from iraq to other strategic positions in the middle east?
What strategic positions? Kuwait? The magic kingdom of Saud?
No. The reason we couldn't win against the jihadists before iraq was that they wear no uniform. They have no national allegiance. You can't tell the difference between a jihadi and a civilian. The U.S. is the most prolific war-fighters the West has ever produced. And you can't fight a Western style war against an enemy like that. But with iraq being opened up the way it has, we now have an established battle ground. The enemy is coming from all over the world to fight us there. And we are averaging 1,200 enemy KIA's a month. That's right. 1,200. The only good jihadist is a dead jihadist. And iraq is the has become the autobahn for those virgin-seekers.

It goes deeper than that. Earlier immigrants, such as the Irish, who really did want to become welcomed as Americans, underwent conditions that were far worse than African slaves at that point. It was actually considered a more cost effective option at one point to hire a free Irish immigrant than a black slave as it cost less to work the Irishman to death.
Both groups paid their way past the natural immune system of a society. Of course that's an extreme example, but to say that anyone off the boat or crosses the border and pays taxes for 3 years can bypass the natural societal acceptance factor is precipitating a domestic violent adjustment. Rightly or wrongly, it's merely a function of the immune system itself.

We hear this every election cycle.
Because every election cycle we're faced with Vietnam-era peace activists who lost the war and allowed Communism to survive.
Because every election cycle we're told to trust the "older, wiser, European Union" who has disenfranchised their own citizenry to the point that Belgians are prepared to dissolve the very Constitution on which their country was founded.
But most importantly, because we face an enemy that was never defeated since the 7th century. They turn those who stood against Muslim aggression such as Vlad the Impaler into monsters, they rewrite the Crusades as an agression against innocent Muslims ignoring the fact that Muslims invaded Christian nations first, and then claim we are evil.
It is the AIDS virus of self-hating political correctness that will kill this country.

I am another Gothamite who lived under Dinkins and then Rudy (and Koch and Beame and Lindsay and Wagner and on the other end Bloomy)
Before Rudy the mantra was NYC was ungovernable, impossible. After Rudy other cities adopted his methods. Crime is down all over big cities in America, welfare has dropped, and he told Arafat and some rich Sheik who dissed America cuz he thought he could buy us to kiss his ass to name a few. Unless you lived it it's just words. But if you did, it was life changing.
Give Rudy his due.
I agree with you. NYC is an enormous city, with a larger population than Norway or Denmark. We tend to think of "cities" as less consequential than states or countries, but that's just because of the way the political system works.
Anyone who can run a huge city like New York City--or Chicago, where I live--deserves major respect.

Does anybody else think the ultimate Republican ticket would be Fred/Rudy? Fred is the heart and Rudy is the brains. They both have good appeal to swing voters as well. Fred for his positive exposure on Law & Order and Rudy for his courage on 9/11. Rudy might also get some liberal votes in big cities for his successful improvements to NYC. What Rudy lacks, Fred has, and vise versa.
I was having a hard time deciding between the two but then I realized I might not have to. Does anybody know whether this is a realistic possibility, or is it just a pipe dream?
My heart is with Fred. I've always supported Fred. But Fred's got to take a back seat as he decided to skip this debate to go on Leno.
Rudy/Fred, not the other way around. I wish Tancredo could get thrown in there somewhere, though. Kinda like a... ummm... no, guess not...

Fred planned to catch the bus, but he was tired, forgot the set his alarm clock.
Then he had a doctor's appointment, and had to cancel.
Then he had concerns that we know nothing about.
Fred, if you don't want to be considered entirely irrelevant, you are going to have to do a virgin dance into the fire.
Have fun.

re: #155 WimbledonWomble
I think there are a large number of Northeasterners and pro-war liberals on LGF. I frequent Free Republic, which touts itself as a conservative website and Rudy is not popular there. Fred Thompson and Duncan Hunter are probably the two most popular Republican candidates on Free Republic. As I have said before I think Rudy will have a hard time gaining votes for the nomination in the South and the Rocky Mountain states.
BTW, I think Duncan Hunter's stance on negotiating fairer trade agreements with China and keeping manufacturing jobs in the US would win over a lot of blue collar Dems in the Rust Belt.

We hear this every election cycle.

Let's not forget what else the Vietnam-era peace activists "caused"...

Enjoy Chen's spin. He said he likes Huck, but we all know he's a Paulistianian.
The poll is for "best performance". I took that literally. I don't think I have to agree with the politics to judge someone of their performance. Huckabee was poised and articulate. I'm no Rudy fan but I am practical. He did an excellent job cleaning up New York. I believe he's the only sure fire winner against the Rotten - therefore even as a Conservative, I've got to vote for him. But if Rudy puts some lib on the Supreme Court, it's the last vote he will get from me. He'd better be telling the truth about Scalia, Thomas, Roberts, or Alito look alike.
And unless he blows it in the debate, Hillary won't win 20 states. I want the Clinton's ass toasted, whatever it takes to move them to the rectum of humanity.

The only danger is that some may pooch out their lower lip, and stay home, if their favorite candidate is not on the ballots. I just hope none here are that foolish.

So I ask myself, what does a President really do that is lasting besides Supreme Court nominations, declare war, and mingle with the military. And I don't want Ms. Rotten within a million miles of the Whitehouse affecting my children 20 years from now. I believe we can pressure Rudy into more conservative positions...

We do deserve what we get. Did you know that 20% of our entire economy goes to support the federal government? Right off the top, across all levels.
And for what? What do social programs do but fill us with warm feelings in our cockles? Warm feelings for what? Didn't Jesus himself say if you don't work, you don't eat?
Cut them. Let them starve and call us granny-pushing thugs who wait by crosswalks until Mack trucks pass and laugh as senior citizens get run down and the cat food they eat so they can buy their prescription drugs goes rolling into the gutter. Let Markos Moulitsas Zuniga call us that. I'll still call him a cross-eyed freak of nature who belongs back in his parent's basement from which he sprang.
Then devolve everything more than national security (including border security, armed forces, and intelligence) and transportation infrastructure (primarily roads and airports, etc.) to the states.
10% Tax Rate across the board, for all individuals, for all corporations, no itemized deductions
And we'd still run a surplus.

What Rudy lacks, Fred has, and vise versa.I was having a hard time deciding between the two but then I realized I might not have to. Does anybody know whether this is a realistic possibility, or is it just a pipe dream?
My heart is with Fred. I've always supported Fred. But Fred's got to take a back seat as he decided to skip this debate to go on Leno.Rudy/Fred, not the other way around. I wish Tancredo could get thrown in there somewhere, though. Kinda like a... ummm... no, guess not...

re: #155 WimbledonWomble
One more reason for me telling Mandy that Huckabee needs to be on the ticket.

There is no deity status consigned to cowards, wafflers or deceivers. I'm not saying that ANY of that applies to Thompson, but if he wants to win, he's going to have to do it upon not just his stands on the issues, but also upon his past performance and his experience level.

I would like to see a Hunter/Tancredo ticket ideally as both of them encompass the 3 facets of combating terror.
1) border security
2) 2nd amendment staunch supporter
3) islamist threat
I wouldn't mind seeing Romney in there.
Giuliani is ok but has some issues that are pretty important to me that I feel he is weak on.
Huckabee is ok.

brownback..not really. Makes me yawn.
absolute no: mccain and ron paul. I don't put them in the same category though...mccain atleast is an honorable patriot and endured much for his country. mccain's policies (mccain feingold/shamnesty bill) have been questionable and he his partnerships with certain dems...scary..like kennedy. There is too much compromise in his voice to reach across the aisle. I think one should know how to work with the dems but not go so far as to partner with them on damaging legislation. ron paul should become a full time comedian. His policies and outlook are archaic and it's a shame because he sounds good the first two sentences on something then loses me in his own right isolationist type mind. ron paul is dangerous for our country and there is zero chance I'd vote for him.

They are the only two who will fight against open borders, the North American Union and illegal immigration. To me that IS the most important issue. How can we have national security with open borders? I assure you all the other candidates are open border candidates no matter how they try to tapdance around the issue without really answering questions clearly.
Let me understand you. You're going to write one of them in in the GE no matter who the Republican nominee is? Is that right?

(2) Abortion - if Rudy is serious about putting a strict constructionist on the court when those two gawd awful libs either leave or die (Ginsberg and Stevens), then the power to overturn Roe v. Wade is where it always belonged in the Supreme Court, not the Presidency - that's the key. Plus we might be able to push that limp noodle Souter out for good measure. We can dog pile him for four years and he'll fold.
(3) We all agree Rudy is going to be tough on terror.
It's the logical choice...there isn't a candidate this coming year in the Reagan mold so we have to be practical.

In a purely platonic way! :) Seriously, he is also a Type 2 diabetic, like my husband and I, and he is a terrific advocate, in addition to what a President needs; honesty and decency. A friend in Arkansas says he is superb, and I trust this friend, who lived through the siege of the Clintoon mafia.
When I read his positions, I was so impressed that I switched from Rudy (don't tell Mandy!)...but if Huckabee does not win, then I hope it will be Rudy.
There are positions of Huckabee's that I am not in favor of ,but all in all, he is my favorite.

I agree that Huck was good. That doesn't answer which horse you've got in this race. Your posts and blog render you an outsider (dem). I bet you've got an Obama bumper sticker on your vehicle, placed directly over the Kerry/Edwards sticker. Am I wrong?
Yes. No bumper stickers on my ride. It's like putting a tattoo on a hot woman. It kinda ruins it.
I sooo want to ask about what horrific experience brought that example to your mind. I have this visual where you uncover the tat - scream - and run away yelling "oh nooo!"
For me, it was the small-of-the-back tat that side "50 cents for the first minute, 25 cents per minute thereafter".
Yeah, I'm old.Seriously, I'm putting my retirement savings in tat removal. When the cherries turn to apples, they'll pay.

At one time, I was anti-tat. One day, I just changed my mind. We jumped on the Harley, went to Little Vinnies, and I got one.I have only two, and I like them. So there. (They are both cats - a panther and chinese cats - oddly enough).
I got nothing against your tats. But I am pretty sure that many of the little hotties with those ubiquitous back tats will one day be grannies with love handles and a need for redecoration. It's just about the money with me. I do not fool with other people's tastes.
BTW, Harleys require tats, if I read the rules right. So you go, girl, and you tell the Mr. I approve of his taste in women.

concerning my earlier remarks about Dick Morris talking about Fred Thompson:
I couldn't find an article but as I recall Morris mentioned some funding abuses... one was using campaign funds to pay Thompson's son a salary for a no-show job for 4 years. In my opinion this will be a big issue for the MSM because they will want to draw attention away from the many Clinton funding abuses which will inevitably come to light after the parties select their candidates... Probably "unelectable" was too strong a word but the MSM will make a big attempt to hang the moniker of "corrupt" over Thompson if he is the Republican nominee

Is Clinton's candidacy blocking 'Path to 9/11'?
The $40-million, five-hour ABC miniseries, which recently received seven Emmy nominations and drew a combined two-night audience of more than 25 million viewers, is for now on the path to nowhere. Its Amazon page reads: "Currently unavailable. We don't know when or if this item will be back in stock."With no date for the release, questions are being raised about whether political pressure is behind its current status as a stalled or discarded DVD project. The reasons are murky, but the miniseries' writer, Cyrus Nowrasteh, believes it's crystal clear: Powerful forces are out to protect Bill Clinton's presidential legacy and shield Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton (D-N.Y.) from any potential collateral damage in her bid for the White House.

Something that Romney said that I noticed the first time, but did not comment on...
Romney says that the governor has no authority over municipalities that don't follow federal law.
That is SO wrong. Basically, all municipal governments are subsidiary creations of the state government, and not a fourth branch of government. If a municipal government does not comply with state edict, the governor or the state government has stern powers to discipline, censure, dismiss, or prosecute those who willfully disobey their lawful duty to obey the dictates of their superior authorities, within the confines of US law.
And if you don't believe that, you are living on planet Mars. The governor has the right to call out the state national guard to remedy any unlawful disobedience within the state, including municipal rebellion against the law, in times of extreme disorder.
Romney is a hack. He doesn't even know how government works.

Actually, he was exactly right.
The state can't require cities to enforce federal laws. It can only require them to enforce state laws.

re: #556 really grumpy big dog Johnson
May I humbly suggest you reread the fine document titled The Constitution of the United States of America. The President has no direct authority over the states or municipalities except as delineated in that document. In practical terms all he or Congress can do is stop such government funds that might normally be destined for the states or municipalities. This is the infamous Federal string on Federal grants and largess. Toe the line or the payments end.

This may depend on the states involved. The Feds cannot force the states beyond the Constitutional limits. The state governments cannot force the cities beyond the state constitutional law. Withdrawing funds is about the only string available.

I wasn't a super fan of Bush 41, but talk about a class act: when his Library opened down in College Station, he invited Dana Carvey. Carvey didn't care much for Bush, made fun of him all the time both for real, and with the characature, but it was so funny, Bush had him down to open his Presidential Library! Contrast that with the way der Schlickmiester had his enemies' lists for anyone who slightly joked about him.

Ron Paul is such an ass. "Go to congress to decide whether to go to war." There's a reason the president is the president. He's a decision maker. He makes a decision. He sells it to congress. You don't have the president asking congress what to do while they are looking to the president as to what to do. Congress couldn't find its ass to wipe it and if they did end up wiping it it would be with wads of US taxpayer cash.
McCain is a nice man. Some where there is a position for him. Huckleberry Mike is a nice minister. Some where there is a church that needs him. Brownback is out.
That leaves Giuliani, Romney, Duncan Hunter and Tancredo. Tancredo has the personal courage to name a problem. He was the one who mentioned a global war against Radical Islam. Even Bush hasn't done that. Duncan Hunter had the most specific answer about Iran. He has a military background. Romney had the vaguest answer "I'm a consensus builder" Well what if you can't build a consensus? Giuliani is a good leader. I would be happy with any one of these 4.
I don't know Fred Thompson. I don't watch that show.
I liked Huckleberry Mike's idea of the fair tax.I like Romney's intention to get rid of the death tax. I liked McCain's idea to start a League of Democracies and I liked that he said that it would be an American decision, (not a UN decision).

The state government is created by mechanisms that have existed within our Constitutional process since day one. The state may not intefere with the internal function of municipalities, which were chartered by the states with the express proviso that they shall not enact, act or otherwise deny the authority of the Constitution, and by extension all laws thereof, which authorizes the state to take whatever remedial measures are necessary to enforce the rule of Constitutional law, up to and including the de-chartering of the local government's right to exist, in the most extreme example.
That would only occur if, after repeated state insistence that the municipality conform to the restrictions of law, the municipality refuses to comply, in which case the state has Constitutional authority to revoke the authority of that government, and order the reconstruction of a replacement body that is willing to comply to the rule of law.

Sorry if I wasn't more clear. That was my intended statement. In a pre 9/11 world, maybe, or in a perfect world, with no baggage, give me Newt Gingrich. This world, I'd love to have Duncan Hunter, but his campaign just hasn't taken off, and realistically, isn't going to. All these coulda shouldas don't mean a thing. I did have some hope for Thompson, but that began to fade about six weeks ago, and when he hired that Spencer Abraham guy, for me. Rudy's always been my guy I've leaned toward here in the real world, the one with the Long War facing us and our children and grandchildren. 1-He probably the most suitable one to deal with Iraq's many problems, he was a successful leader for New York in its worst times (9/11) and the crimes surge, crimes went significantly down, because that guy knows the tipping point practically.
2-Up to now, he shows no dhimmitude, he didn't tell us that Islamists are peaceful we can negotiate with them, or it is ok to censor free speech to care of too much sensibilities of some people.

I think folks who are mad and discounting Fred for putting his candidacy announcement off should hopefully be very very angry at the process that is pushing the announcing to early stages. This is going to hurt voters in the long run...with all these states trying to vie for the first position to vote in the primaries.

As an Iraqi who is (currently living abroad, ex-muslim, and pro-west), I voted here to Rudy Giuliani, I think he is the right guy:
1-He probably the most suitable one to deal with Iraq's many problems, he was a successful leader for New York in its worst times (9/11) and the crimes surge, crimes went significantly down, because that guy knows the tipping point practically.
2-Up to now, he shows no dhimmitude, he didn't tell us that Islamists are peaceful we can negotiate with them, or it is ok to censor free speech to care of too much sensibilities of some people.
3-He is not (super ultra conservative who want to change the laws and constitution to include some bans), especially in the next tough election, a super conservative will never have any chance to win.

Leno: Hey, let me ask you about some serious issues. The Iraq war obviously the biggest issue in this campaign. Were you for it?
Fred: Yeah.
Leno: You were for it. O.K.
Fred: Yeah. I think we gotta remember what it'd be like if we had not done what we did. Saddam would still be there, having defeated the United Nations ...all the resolutions. Uh... it would have defeated the United States, in effect. It would have uh... been in position to continue its nuclear weapons program, it would have still been doiong what they were doing, putting people in human shredders, and especially in light of what Iran is doing right now, they certainly would have been in a nuclear competition in that part of the world, sitting on those oil reserves. To think that had we not gone in there we wouldn't have had any problems, I think, is dead wrong.
Leno: Do we stay?
Fred: I think that we stay until we get the job done.
Leno: I think that's the part that confuses people.
Fred: Until it is pacified enough for those people, who went into voting lines with people shooting at them in some cases, who voted, and put their finger in the ink and so forth, the first time in that part of the world, in the history of the world. Uh... until they have an opportunity to have a free life and to not be killed by Al Qaeda and others fighting uh... in that part of the world. I think that that's doable. I think it's tough. But I think we can't afford to go into a situation and not show resolve. I think the most dangerous thing in the world that could happen to the United States of America is for people to think we're weak and divided. Iraq is a part of a much bigger picture. Iraq and Afghanistan. Uh... there is a global war going on. We are the main target. And those who would befriend us. The enemy is ruthless. Al Qaeda is here ...in this country. National intelligence estimates tell us that. They are strong. They're trying to get their hands on nuclear weapons and other weapons of mass destruction. I don't know how much more stark the situation could be. That's going to be the situation that we're going to have to deal with for some time, regardless of what happens in Iraq. But if the wrong result happens in Iraq and we're perceived the wrong way by friends and enemies alike, it's going to make the situation more difficult, and we're going to be more vulnerable. It's a tough deal, but it's a choice of two bad choices, not a good and a bad.
Leno: Well, how about Iran? You see possibly military action there as well? I mean, at what point does it stop?
Fred: You can't ever... you can't ever tell what the facts on the ground are going to be a year or two years from where we're sitting here. Obviously, our intelligence knows some things that you and I don't know. I had a... you know, I was chairman of one of a committee that dealt with some of these issues for the Secretary of State, until I resigned to do this, I had a high security clearance. But I don't know exactly where they are in their nuclear program, I don't think our intelligence knows precisely. But they're moving in that direction. And they're clearly responsible for more and more of our problems. They are sending in these improvised explosive devices, they are training Iraqi militants in Iran and sending them back into Iraq, they're sponsoring Hezballah, who probably as we speak are planning another attack on Israel. They support Hamas. They support terrorism all around the world. And they've got a fella who is not put together well upstairs runnin' the country.
Leno: Right.
[Nervous laughter]
Fred: And has threatened the destruction of Israel. I mean, sometimes when these maniacs make threats ...they mean it. And it comes to pass later on. So we've got to take that situation very seriously. But obviously, a military attack is the last thing in the world that you want to have to do, and there's some things that we can do that will probably not necessitate that.

re: #556 really grumpy big dog Johnson
Something that Romney said that I noticed the first time, but did not comment on...Romney says that the governor has no authority over municipalities that don't follow federal law.
May I humbly suggest you reread the fine document titled The Constitution of the United States of America. The President has no direct authority over the states or municipalities except as delineated in that document. In practical terms all he or Congress can do is stop such government funds that might normally be destined for the states or municipalities. This is the infamous Federal string on Federal grants and largess. Toe the line or the payments end.{^_^}
Your post might have some traction if anywhere in my reply was the Executive Branch ever mentioned. It wasn't and you have no traction. I did discuss the deniability of a fourth branch, but never suggested that the Executive had any direct power over the states, individually or collectively. The Supreme Court, directly and through its supernumaries, has a lot of control over the states, in ways that most don't understand.

I find Tancredo a 'one issue' candidate.
Yea, it reminds me a lot of how Pres. Ronald Reagan was a "one issue" candidate in how he recognized the most pressing issue of our time because that issue was about the survival of our way of life as we know it.
There is a big difference between being a one issue candidate and understanding that unless we secure our own country, it is only a matter of time before none of the other issues matter any more.
When given an opportunity to answer questions in the debates, he shows he is not a single issue candidate.

No branch of the Federal government is allowed to make laws that abridge rights granted to the states let alone the cities.
What it CAN do is pull the grant money leash. But sending in troops is right out unless national laws are at stake.
It is debatable whether the Feds have the authority to stomp on states or cities directly with military or police level force over enforcing the immigration laws. But the Federal grant leash can be a rather harsh choke collar on cities and particularly on states. It is not 100% effective, though.

The state can send in troops if the subsidiary entity refuses to comply with the dictates of Constitutional law. This is not debatable, and the Supreme Court can overrule any local state decision, as was the case when George Wallace decided to defy the Constitution to deny admission to his federally-funded state university, and federal troops were sent in to enforce compliance.
The federal government can overrule local control via the Executive in the most extreme circumstances, via Posse Commitatus. It has very rarely been used, and President Bush pondered the use before deciding against it in the giant tripartite failure that was Hurricane Katrina, when stonewalled for the better part of a week by Louisiana's governor and further obstructed by NOLA mayor Ray Nagin.
To his credit, he did not issue that extreme challenge to the Constitution, although he had that right. And in not doing so, he created in part the current democrat party hatred of his presumed incompetence.
Let's just say that some people don't know what they are talking about, shall we?

I cannot believe just how ridiculous that Alan Colmes is in the interview I am watching right now with Tancredo. He asks him how he can talk about the rule of law when the Geneva convention is also the rule of law and that Tancredo would be for water-boarding when he was given the hypothetical scenario of nuclear bombings already launched at America and detained terrorists having information about more that were to go off.
This idiot Colmes doesn't even understand that the Geneva convention protects Lawful combatants. Terrorists are unlawful combatants. They get no Geneva convention protections because only lawful combatants are subject to it. This idiot would sooner see millions of Americans killed and the catastrophic fall out of such an attack than to see a few terrorists water-boarded (something that does not even leave permanent damage) who are not even protected by the Geneva convention in the first place. It just doesn't get much more morally depraved than this.

Unfortunately, there have been some court decisions that behaved as if these non-uniformed, illegal-combatants are covered by the Geneva Convention. That has exasperated a lot of people, and has thrown certain procedural goings on at GTMO into a tailspin. Ergo, some people do believe that torturing an illegal combatant constitutes violating the rule of law, infuriating as that might seem.

What rule of law would that be? Certainly not the Geneva Convention since it specifically covers Lawful combatants. That was the entire purpose of it. To protect those taken as POW's that are lawful combatants of those nations that have signed the Geneva Convention agreement.

Unlawful combatants are subject to summary execution in the field. Holding them and giving them any sort of hearing is already above and beyond in humanitarian terms, and far better than what the terrorists, the Chinese, the N. Koreans, the Iranians or anyone else would do for us.
The Iran question was a very, very important one.
McCain nailed the Iran question better than anyone else. BUT his shamnesty rules him out, and his idiotic idea somehow 60 years of history will be reversed, and kind treatment of our enemies will result in kind treatment of our boys.
Guliani gave the second best answer, and a good one. Point a crapload of missiles at them, and tell them to say uncle. I do like that he has experience actually running an administration, competence would be nice in higher office. I also like how he looked at the moderator like he was an idiot for asking about how other nations feel about us. I think he believes we should do the right thing regardless. The inability of most politicians to think this way is why we have so many gutless RINO's in office. I liked his states rights answers, but would he stick with them?
Mitt stunk on that question. I wanted to like him, but his mealy mouthed answer made me think that foreign policy and war fighting is a popularity contest. I think he would morph once in office from the pressure of the NYT, WaPo and the other RINO's at the dinner parties. He has a big head, which reminds me of Senator Lurch, and that's bad.
Huckabee did have the best one liner of the night.
Brownback is a moron.
Duncan hunter got told by a staffer to "lean against the podium, be at a 45 degree angle to the camera, and arch your eyebrows when you talk". It seemed like a pose, but his on-the-record positions match me better than any other candidate. I think that maybe a Guliani/Hunter ticket could do well, those soft on Guliani could look forward to Hunter as the strong man in 2016. I wonder if that team could carry NY and Cali?
Ron Paul exemplifies why the Libertarian Party is stuck in obscurity. He has some GREAT philosophies. But like most libertarian politicians and wanna-be's, he holds to the extreme (or logical conclusion) of those philosophies and miss-applies them in the real world. Do we want a declaration of war? YES! Do we hand our heads over to muslims because we have a weenie congress that won't declare war? No!
Is the CIA a huge mess and waste of money? YESS! Do we abolish it and wait for the first strike before we respond? NO! Particularly because libertarians advocate free and open borders (a nice theory, but like communism, unworkable), they cannot also say we need to gut intelligence, and ban wiretapping of int'l calls.
No thrill or memorable moments from the others.
Fred! Has been waiting too long, should have been in this debate. At this point, while I was in love with Fred!, I think Guliani is the man. He has a track record. If we had a sea of new-blood GOP in congress, it would be a great combo. It would also be something to see him bitch-slap some old-guard RINO's. I hope that Thompson can turn his act around. In theory, he may be the best candidate from a conservative point of view. But he needs to compete with the Gravitas that Guliani exhibited last night.

re: #680 AirForceWife
Yes and Tancredo was on Fox this am and said "how can you trust some of these guys who have totally flipped in the last couple of months based on polls?" Tancredo's mentioning of Iraq being 1 battle in a war on global terrorism puts Iraq into context, unlike the dems.
And McCain thinks that if we don't torture that our enemy won't torture. He is fighting a Victorian War by Geneva Conventions rules where the enemy wears uniforms. He is not talking about today where the enemy does not wear a uniform and shoots from behind women and children, so that if they are hit, the enemy can whine and cry and sue, and get paid damages, and then the US military will hang our soldiers for them. And of course the enemy will torture Americans. They do it to their own people. Did the Geneva Convention mention beheading people? Al Qaeda beheads little 8 year old girls.
Ron Paul won Fox's poll as well. Why is Fox only counting text messages? What happened to on line polls or emails? Obviously if you use a medium used by the young you will skew the vote results. And it costs money.
I am still not impressed with the republican party organization. I am on more than 1 mailing list for the candidates and yet no one emails to say there is a GOP debate. Luckily I saw it mentioned in the morning by ED Hill or I would have missed it.
It is not fair the way the media focuses on the candidates it likes. My father still can't figure out who Duncan Hunter is because of the lack of face time. Thank God, Hunter wore a red tie and Huckleberry Mike wore a blue tie. I find that they look similar.
But the media is only comfortable with same old, same old. After they achieve it, then they'll be whining, it's all the "same".
And what about separation of Church and state? There is no way dems are going to cross the line to vote for Huckleberry. He wants a constitutional amendment to adopt the pope's position that life begins at conception. No, I do not want a minister as president. If he would wins the title, the GOP loses the presidency. Let Huckleberry Mike lead the daily prayers.

Demanian 683
No Condi is out. She wants to go back to academia. She has been taken over by the State Department and sells their stupid message. "land for peace." Israel keeps giving back land on which terrorist states are built. There is a finite amount of land. The Arabs can keep asking for concessions until there is no Israel left, and the State Department still won't be satisfied. "OOO we have to make the Arabs happy." How about the Arabs who have all the land and who have the capacity to grant peace, how about they make some concessions? They lose wars but ohhh they're not allowed to lose anything as a result. They get us to fight their wars with Saddam and kicking Iraq out of Kuwait, and with Iran but no, they don't have to make concessions. They get to be displeased by having our men's boots on the ground. "Oh you've soiled the holy land of Saudi Arabia." The State Dept. says "We don't want our masters being displeased. " Can you imagine a divorce case with a man and a woman and the man demands the land, and refuses to allow peace but says to the woman "hey maybe at some point in the future if you keep giving me everything I want and keep giving me a massage, maybe I'll get around to acknowledging that you exist." What a negotiating position. No American divorce lawyer I know has had the chutzpah to try that one. The wife's answer should be "How about I keep bombing you until you acknowledge that I exist and then we can discuss property?" But no, our little State Department keeps kowtowing to the Arabs, and twisting Israel's arm, only with Olmert, he's such a wimp, it doesn't take any force at all. I guess the kowtowing by the State Dept. is good practice for when the Chinese take over. This is another good reason for voting for Hunter who recognizes there is a problem.

I like Tancredo but think he's a bit emotional for President - over the top with the nuke mecca bit by just a tad... but I would vote for him.
One of the things I like best about him.
Tancredo's mentioning of Iraq being 1 battle in a war on global terrorism puts Iraq into context, unlike the dems.
Another thing I like best about him.
Tancredo has the personal courage to name a problem. He was the one who mentioned a global war against Radical Islam. Even Bush hasn't done that.
Darn tootin'.
Can you start to tell who I like?

"Why is Fox only counting text messages?"
Because they can charge for those. Online polls are free.
My thoughts...
I personally thought McCain and Huckabee came out looking the best. This will help McCain stop his bleeding and keep Huckabee moving up. Paul tried to be more aggressive in defending his positions and came out with more fire, but didn't help himself by losing his temper like that. Rudy and Romney really didn't impress me any. The others may as well have stayed home they were so boring.
The confrontation between Huckabee and Paul made this debate interesting. Beyond that, no one really said anything new.
Fred needs to get off his ass and into these debates.

And the Republican party is a fucking idiot for treating him as a serious candidate and providing a platform. He and his followers don't need representation, they need medication."
What a stupid thing to say!
If the polls are correct he'll pull in maybe 3-5% of the GOP vote and about the same percentage of independent voters. How is that 'dangerous'? And if '08 is a tight race, do you really want to alienate 3-5% of your own party?

No, he said going into Iraq was a mistake. He voted for the attack on Afghanistan. If your going to criticize, fine. But get your facts straight. I've known quite a few liberals in my life and none of them want to eliminate the income tax or shrink the government. His views are libertarian, not liberal. Don't try to paint every viewpoint you don't agree with with the 'liberal' brush. Leave those kind of silly attacks to the Indymedia types.

"Ron Paul is such an ass. "Go to congress to decide whether to go to war." There's a reason the president is the president. He's a decision maker. He makes a decision. He sells it to congress. You don't have the president asking congress what to do while they are looking to the president as to what to do. Congress couldn't find its ass to wipe it and if they did end up wiping it it would be with wads of US taxpayer cash."
Well, the constitution does state that only Congress has the power to declare war so it does kinda make a little sense to go to Capitol Hill don't you think? Yes, the President is a leader and decision maker, but he's not a dictator. He can't just push the button and make the bombs fall. Are you suggesting a President bypass congress or do away with it altogether?

This will all be exposed for the 'far-left troofer' B.S. stunt it really is when the Primaries come around. Ron Paul is NOT a Republican & will get C-R-U-S-H-E-D when Republicans actually get to vote for their candidate. Pollsters will scratch their heads & wonder about this anomaly when all they had to do is listen to Hannity & LGF all along. The left really is loony - would the right ever try this hard to skew results for a Dem candidate? I think not because Republicans actually have jobs, families & a life!

Sigh...
Take a look at Meetup.com and search under 'Ron Paul'. You will find around 40,000 people signed up in hundreds of groups worldwide. I have met several of the local meetup members in my home town of Cincinnati. Of the ones I've met, one is what you might call a 'troofer'. The rest are grassroots libertarian and conservative activists. These people are not casual supporters who will simply punch in a name on election day. They are passionate activist who truly believe in what they are doing. And yes, they all have jobs, families, and lives. I've yet to meet one who is a far-lefty out to pull some kind of stunt. I'll give you an example. Ron Paul is due to speak at a 2nd amendment conference in Cincinnati in early October. The local meetup organizer contacted the Paul campaign about having a rally here. He was told the Paul would only be in town for a few hours and leave. There are no plans for a rally. So the meetup group is organizing a rally themselves at their own expense. This is with no help or money from the Paul campaign. If they can organize a large enough rally, the Paul will briefly attend.
Now, you don't like Ron Paul? Fine. You don't like his stand on issues? Fine. You don't have to vote for him. But to try to characterize his supporters as some kind of left wing stunt is disingenuous.
