-RetweetThursday Evening Open

Thu, Sep 13, 2007 at 5:12:14 pm PDT

Here’s an open thread for an egalitarian Thursday evening.

Some small but helpful interface enhancements in the comment rating system:

* The numbers are slightly larger, and now are colored green for positive numbers, black for zero, or red for negative numbers.

* When you rate a comment, your choice is recorded, and the button you clicked on will be a slightly darker shade of gray to indicate whether you chose yea or nay.

Oh, and I want to put in another big plug for the excellent jQuery Javascript library, which makes writing quick and not-too-dirty Ajax functions extremely easy (among many other great features).

The future is now...
Matter-antimatter molecules of positronium observed in the lab for the first time

The research paves the way for studying multi-positronium interactions – useful for generating coherent gamma radiation – and could one day help develop fusion power generation as well as directed energy weapons such as gamma-ray lasers. It also could help explain how the observable universe ended up with so much more matter than “antimatter.”

20 zombie  Thu, Sep 13, 2007 5:20:02pm

The "Right Wing News" site put out a list of The 75 Most Popular Right-Of-Center Websites today. Originaly, I was not on the list, but someone just notified me that the site owner just added this update:

Update #1: ZombieTime, which covers a lot of freaky California protests, is actually ranked 129,269 by Alexa which means that it was left off the list. Had it been included, it would have clocked in at #66.

Woo-hoo! I come in just ahead of Republican National Committee. (Can that be for real?)

The Top 75 of the current list is dominated by big corporate Web sites with dozens or hundreds of people on staff -- kind of unfair to the poor blogs which are usually run by one (or two) people! Though it is surprising how well some of them fared when going up against the Big Boys.

The most interesting measure I would love to see would be "visitors per site-employee" -- i.e. which site is the most effective in terms of man-hours. I suspect that Little Green Footballs would come out on top, as it's the highest ranked site run entirely by one person; with Michelle Malkin's site (she gets some help) and Hot Air (two-ish people) close behind. Amazing how many visitors those "lowly" blogs get, considering that most of the corporate sites require 50 employees to attract the same (or less!) traffic.

I suspect that Charles has the most "effective" site on the Web, on a person-per-visitors basis.

I don't trust any list based on Alexa. What you should know about Alexa: their system only logs statistics from people who install its special toolbar, and that toolbar has a rather bad reputation as a quasi-virus -- so the number of people who install it, and their demographic, is suspect to say the least.

re: #13 Killgore Trout

OK, I read it now.

Not satire!

However, I disagree with their characterisation of the stuff they created as a "molecule." Wouldn't a true molecule involve electrons and/or positrons orbiting around some kind of baryons, such as neutrons or protons? Instead, what they created was a briefly entangled grouping of leptons (i.e. electrons and positrons). That is indeed amazing, but it has no "substance" -- hence, it should NOT qualify as an atom or molecule. More like an entangled cloud -- frozen electricity.

A way for registered lizards to post links to articles or web sites, with a short description. The list of posted articles will appear on the front page, and each post will have its own thread of comments. And yes, there will be a system for registered lizards to rate the posted articles.

It's always irked me that there wasn't a better way to feature the many great links that are posted in our comments every day. And I just don't have the time to post everything I'd like to. So this will be a way to tap the expertise and vast linkosity of the lizard army, for everyone's benefit.

LOL! I suppose the feel good sentiment of Red Stripe's "Beer...Hooray Beeer" is completely played out at this point. So, recently I have become addicted to Berry-Weiss beers of any western concoction. New feature coming soon (not right away, haven't started coding, but the concept is taking shape):

A way for registered lizards to post links to articles or web sites, with a short description. The list of posted articles will appear on the front page, and each post will have its own thread of comments. And yes, there will be a system for registered lizards to rate the posted articles.

It's always irked me that there wasn't a better way to feature the many great links that are posted in our comments every day. And I just don't have the time to post everything I'd like to. So this will be a way to tap the expertise and vast linkosity of the lizard army, for everyone's benefit.

Charles, that is an excellent idea. Serious news vs. Farkiness. Even if I were outcast, hated, despised and pilloried here I would still be a reader just to keep up with real events and news. Maybe that's why Reuters is always visiting... :)

zombie (#20),

The most interesting measure I would love to see would be "visitors per site-employee" -- i.e. which site is the most effective in terms of man-hours.
Free Republic at #9 would win.

But don't hundreds of people contribute posts and threads to Free Republic? I don't know how many people run the site backend (perhaps only one), but that person does NOT post all the content, which seems to be "people-powered."

Then again, I never really visit FR, so I could be wrong.

I don't trust any list based on Alexa. What you should know about Alexa: their system only logs statistics from people who install its special toolbar, and that toolbar has a rather bad reputation as a quasi-virus -- so the number of people who install it, and their demographic, is suspect to say the least.

Exactly. Responsible webmasters have paid absolutely no attention to Alexa for a decade or so.

And whatever you do, do not install the Alexa toolbar.

Italy's Left-Wing Terrorists Flirt with Radical Islamists

Last February, in the quiet of a secluded northern Italian country house, three Italian far left militants brainstormed, unaware that counter-terrorism officials were listening to their every word. The men were known members of the so-called "New Red Brigades," discussing new strategies for the group. Alfredo Davanzo, the ideologue of the group who had just returned from France using a forged passport, spoke about the need to overcome the organization's isolation, caused by its secrecy and the waves of arrests it had suffered (ironically, the three would be arrested the following Monday). The group, said the men, should find new venues for their recruitment efforts and pointed to Italian mosques, described as "propellers of protests and struggles," as one of the most obvious choices

#105 Kellino

to quote a very old Simpson's episode..."I find your ideas intriguing and wish to subscribe to your newsletter." :)

I transitioned from the heavy dark beers to the berry beers early in my twenties. Here's an interesting factoid: I went to college in Southern Maine in the 90's. I rode a bike to school and to my job. I passed this certain gas station every time I went to and from work. I loved Sam Adams' Cranberry Lambic and would buy a now unavailable 22OZ. bottle on my way home from work about every other week. It was the only place nearby where I lived that sold this single 22OZ bottle of this rare beer. This gas station was less than 1/4 mile from the Portland, Maine airport. I rode by that airport every night on my way home from work. Mohamed Atta got gas at that gas station with the Cranberry Lambic. The asshole got safely into Boston's Logan Airport only after successfully getting through security at the little airport in Portland, Maine. Surveillance videos will prove what I say is true. Maine is a small place. The jihadists used it.

181 BulgarWheat  Thu, Sep 13, 2007 6:03:57pm

for some bizarre reason, FOX audio is not synched to their video on my view.

This causes me to listen but not watch. Guess that's a good thing.

I couldn't handle another minute of Christy and that ass-hat Olbermann another second.

It's been a long day and the only way I could handle that is by smacking Olber-puss upside his thick head.

I think that a comment should get lighter and lighter as the minuses add up, until it fades into oblivion. We could call it "ghosting"... as in "Hey! Let's all ghost Chen!"

Visual evidence of lizard power.

How many minuses can someone accrue before they get voted off the website for good?

Just one - goodbye.

The tricky part is - Charles' AJAX magic makes YOU think you're still posting - but no one else can see your posts.

Yeah, I know. I left "USM" and Portland in 2000. I never really experienced the new population of the "The Cities of the Androscogin - Lewiston-Auburn". :) Maybe you remember that sing-song advertisement? :)

But I visited for the first time in six years in the summer of 2006. The city was different in certain aspects... :)

Kenneth, I feel very sorry for Turkey. They had a great leader who decreed secularism over islamism and that country thrived for a long period.

How sad it is to see such a great society, which thrived for centuries through secularism and pseudo democracy, try so hard to get into the EU, only to have its populace elect an islamist as its leader, and be rejected by the West, and forced to return to the rotting hell of "islamist based culture".

To be conscious and so aware of the imminent decline of your country and your culture due to the populace embracing islamism over rationalism must be like eating a turd and calling it a steak.

Nice touch, and thank you, Charles. However- I'm seeing the minus digits and zeros in green after I've rated a comment. They switch to red and black upon refreshing the page.

Here's what I want to talk about.

On September 11th, the university paper could have done many things with it's cartoon. It could have mourned the victims, it could have remembered the heroes, it could have supported the troops still fighting, it could have done many good things. It could even have completely ignored the date and run a cartoon on the things happening at the very university it is published at. Instead, it was a nonsensical insult to George Bush. What class.

Fan-damn-TASTIC! Much as I love Michelle and HotAir and Powerline (and others), you, Charles, are the absolute TOP DOG!

Hey guys.

Don't know if this is newsworthy, but I think it is notable: remember that protest in Belgium that ended up with a lot of people being arrested? Well, apparently that was seperate from the actual SIOE peaceful protest.

[Link: sioe.wordpress.com...]

We believe, therefore, that Vlaams Belang attempted to hijack SIOE’s demonstration because they knew that they could publicise their own domestic political agenda, on the back of the world news generated by our protest.

[...]

When Anders Gravers and Stephen Gash arrived to Luxembourg Place they were greeted by high-ranking police officers who announced that “the demonstration was forbidden” but that we would be tolerated if we stayed on Luxembourg Square and abided by our own aims and rules, which of course we did.
As the safety of its supporters and public order has always been paramount in SIOE’s organisation of the demonstration, SIOE complied with police instructions at all times without question, and had a peaceful demonstration in Luxembourg Place.

SIOE can only praise the police for their efforts.

The police only made a couple of administrative arrests of single persons that apparently had not understood SIOE’s rule of only displaying SIOE’s slogans on banners.

So, hey... things aren't quite as bad as they seemed. Vlaams Belang was looking to hijack the protest for his own political purpose - I don't like how the police handled that, but at least the actual SIOE protest was tolerated.

Hello, I am trying out how to send a message to these servicemen to thank them for their sacrifice and courage. Unfortunately, since the piece was written less than a month ago, two have been killed and one seriously injured.

Is it possible to find a contact to a specific soldier? Alternately, if anyone knows these soldiers, they could just send them some support for me. Thanks.

How provencial must I be to have heard for years about the "apartheid" wall between the Israeli's and their bomb-belt happy palestinian neighbors...but to not have even seen one photo of the Belfast "peace wall," that the Israeli's obviously copied since it was built in 1969.
