-RetweetLGF Dictionary: New Site Launches

Sun, Sep 16, 2007 at 8:21:32 am PDT

The LGF Dictionary has had an extreme makeover, and now has its own domain name and web site, run by Zombie with help from a crack editorial staff: song_and_dance_man, Killgore Trout, Thanos, vxbush, lawhawk, DesertSage, Mandy Manners, and Noam Sayin’.

Excellent work, folks.

Zombie,

According to the Daily Kos website, the site was created on May 26, 2002. It's unlikely that the reference to Kossacks on May 1, 2002 referred to a website from the future.

The Dictionary is a work of art. Funny AND enlightening, too.

However, I didn't see an entry for "fauxtography". I always thought that was an LGF invention.

Sharmuta -

The LGF Dictionary is a record of terms and how they came to be. Some terms were introduced or made popular by posters who are no longer here. It's just data, really.

Here's my $0.02 on the issue. The LGF dictionary is a separate entity from LGF, one over which Charles has no personal control. That a user has been banned here does not make that user banned from either existence or memory. Someone who coins a term might very well have some intellectual property claim to the word, so if the individual is known then the individual should be credited, no matter what that individual's relationship with LGF has since become.

To do anything less is frankly - dishonest. Unethical. And petty. Very petty. Right up there with dinging a post because you don't like the poster.

55 Geepers  Sun, Sep 16, 2007 8:58:04am

Hey, they took out the reference to me being the originator of L³.

But added my explanation of the origins of "balestinian", so it's a wash.

Killgore

Mr. Holland’s Opus - A reference to the tedious Richard Dreyfuss film, which had its origins on this LGF thread (something to do with an intentional mixup between the Dreyfus Affair and the career of actor Richard Dreyfuss). The significance and syntactical purpose of the reference, and the reasons why the very phrase “Mr. Holland’s Opus” continues to be thought of as humorous, are lost in the mists of time.

Mr. Holland's Opus was something you said when you wouldn't even argue with a troll. A variation of GAZE. It was over their heads, kinda like everyone was in on it but them. Looking back it may not be as funny, but that was reasoning :)

Actually, I always pegged zombie for a she. Well... I take that back... I have actually gone back and forth with trying to figure him/her out. Sometimes I figure that s/he just had to be a guy. But then sometimes when I read something s/he says in his/her blog entries or comments here at LGF and they sound like something a woman would say.

re: #83 MICHAEL in MI Yeppers - annonymity is a must for zombie's protection - that's why I congratulated Charles!

I think the best thing zombie has going for him/her is that, I believe, s/he stated once that s/he used to be a leftist who went to their protests in order to participate in them, not to infiltrate them. But it was when s/he went to one and actually realized how delusional they were that s/he started to realize s/he was not of their delusional ideology. And then that was when s/he decided to start infiltrating them to expose them. So considering s/he used to be one of them, sortof, s/he probably can blend in pretty well in most cases.

Anyway, I will drop this now.

Great job with the LGF Dictionary zombie and staff. I have been a reader of LGF, but I don't get to read the comments very much and I am a rare commenter. So I don't know all the history and origins of most of the terms and such there. Heck, I didn't even know what PIMF meant for the longest time until just recently. "zombie sock-puppet" -the media practice whereby the words of a politician are so deliberately misquoted and taken out of context that the report bears no resemblance to the actual words spoken.

For example, last November the headlines around the world were:
Bush: We're not winning in Iraq

I had to search around to find a video recording of the interview in which a reporter asked Bush to comment on the statement by Gen. Pace, "We're not winning and we're not loosing in Iraq". Bush repeated the phrase and added, "Well, that's a curious turn of phrase and not one I would use." He then went on at length and described the situation as tough, but we are having success. None of that context was in the media reports, "Bush concedes US is loosing" was the "ananlysis". Bush was made a zombie sock-puppet of the leftist msm party line. The media does it all the time, & they did it again with Greenspan's "oil" comment.

Heh, thanks. :) I actually just figured out what it was when I went to the LGF FAQ page a few weeks ago when Charles put that nifty new sidebar on the left there. I had never read the FAQ before and it was very educational!

The truth is -- it's not misdirection at all. I honestly do not know if zombie is male or female.

I can confirm that zombie is indeed either male or female. I certain of it.

104 WriterMom  Sun, Sep 16, 2007 9:35:41am

It looks great.

I guess now is the part where everyone gratuitously adds in their favourite missing terms. I think "Whores of the Caliphate" or at least "Gramscian Whores of the Caliphate" would be worth additions. Also, in the Arabic "Inshallah".

Email sent.

On the crawlspace, I discovered the source of the problem and starting putting in a new drainage system with a bigger French Drain, the problem is getting it finished -- either too hot, too dry, or now, too wet.

The navy laid out the neighborhood I live in and everybody has flooding problems. Hydrography must not have been the strong suit at the local NAS.

Xanes are trolls who pretends to be Jewish on LGF when they clearly are not. Xanes make inflamatory and offensive statements with the goal of dividing Christians and Jews. Xanes are members of the "ROP" who rationalize lying on this site because the goals of the Caliphate must be furthered at all costs.

Right up there with dinging a post because you don't like the poster.

You were already told once, so what are you really trying to say? Or were you unaware that abusers are being monitored?

Insinuating unsubstantiated allegations could also be considered dishonest. Unethical. And petty. Very petty.

Killgore, zombie,

Just a couple of suggestions:

1)Remove the "c" from Allahu ackbar. Properly rendered "Allahu akbar".

2) The jinn aren't ghosts, at least, not in the sense that people think of ghosts as being the spirits or souls of dead people. They're an actual parallel race of creatures made of fire that humans usually can't see. Here's the MSA's glossary definition of jinn:

These are spiritual beings that inhabit the world and are required to follow the orders of Allah and are accountable for their deeds. They can be good or bad, just like people. The word Jinn in Arabic means hidden, which indicates that they are invisible creatures. They were created by Allah from fire.

Unmemtioned above is that they are also thought to eat the bones of dead animals, which is why Mo told his followers not to wipe their asses with animal bones.

re: #13 Sharmuta

I have to ask- is there some reason you guys felt compelled to hat tip banned posters?

Those hat tips are left over from the beginnings of the dictionary -- many of them date from 2004.

The hat tips reflect the people who helped with definitions, research, and word coinages when I first put the dictionary together. Just because some people were later banned from LGF for whatever reason, doesn't mean that we have to "erase them from existence" a la Stalin and his notorious photographs that once included purge victims.

Many of those banned people earned hat tips on LGF itself for various news story tips -- if you look into the archives of LGF, I'm sure you can find those hat tips still in place. Charles didn't erase them either.

Facts is facts. Perhaps later we'll redesign the page so the hat tips aren't so prominently placed.

Thanks to the Zombie and the Crack Staff (sounds painful!). Scrolling through brings back many memories.
One question: When does ChenZhen replace nodroG as the the most persistant troll/contrarian in the history of LGF. Is a date circled on someone's calendar?

Gordon has been posting here snce at least 03, so I've probably got a long way to go. I'd be flattered if I made it into the dictionary though.

Anyway, it's good to see that the dictionary was finally unveiled. I've known about it for awhile, and I was kinda wondering there if it was ever going to come out of it's closet.

Charles :
I would like to point out that while a "hat tip" has been given to acquaintances for over a hundred years, the giving of a "hat tip" as an acknowledgment of using another's' idea was originated by the cartoonist "Hatlo". He would request, use, and acknowledge ideas for use in his comic strip. "Hatlos', They'll do it every time"

141 Etaoin Shrdlu  Sun, Sep 16, 2007 10:46:20am

Nerd Nit: The Shover Robot entry says that "ICQ is not an acronym, but is rather a shorthand way of spelling 'I seek you'." Actually "I seek you" is half an obscure pun; ICQ stands for "Internet CQ", where CQ is a Morse abbreviation that begins a transmission directed to anyone who receives it. (As a famous example, the Titanic sent "-.-. --.- -.. -.. . -- --. -.--", "CQ [calling] D [distress] DE [from] MGY [the ship's callsign]".)

Interesting! Now, your assignment is to find a reference to this fact so we can connfirm it. Post your research results here -- or better yet, on the dictionary blog itself.

I'm sure you're correct, but we need "proof" in the form of a link documenting the Hatlo story.
