These sorts of comments remind me of a conversation I had with a former colleague years ago. She had said some ugly things about Camille Paglia that revealed that she'd never actually read any of Paglia's work. So a friend gave her a copy of one of her books (not the best one, but at least a pretty representative sample of her work). She still refused to read it; her husband refused to read it; and both of them continued to slam Paglia. Now I find much to disagree with in her work, both scholarly and political, and think she's a sloppy thinker in many regards, a dilettante more than a scholar. That said, I actually took the time to read the books. Anyway, my former colleague gave me the unread book.
