-RetweetTuesday Afternoon Hamster Panic

Tue, Sep 18, 2007 at 3:29:51 pm PDT

Just had a short hamster panic (I hate it when the short hamsters panic), this time in the database server. Everything’s back together now, and all the king’s horses didn’t even have to help.

Here’s an open hamster thread...

Charles

...An advocacy group for Muslims in the United States called on the FBI on Tuesday to investigate an attack on Muslim worshippers outside an Ohio mosque. The Council on American-Islamic Relations, or CAIR, said the attack occurred Friday night as worshippers attended prayers at Masjid As-Sahaaba to mark the monthlong fast of Ramadan.

The attackers made derogatory statements and began throwing rocks, striking one worshipper in the back and smashing two windows on the front of the mosque, according to a police report

IsraelNN.com) During clashes between Hamas and Islamic Jihad terrorists in Gaza, three Hamas men were wounded.

The clashes took place in Gaza City and were over control of one of the city's mosques.

PA reports say that the traditionally Islamic Jihad-affiliated mosque was approached by a group of men from the ruling Hamas group, which tried to take control of it. Fighting ensued

Great catch, and this is what caught my eye especially:

I made that comment kind of tongue in cheek, but you all know that I believe that the IAF destroyed a chemical plant and not a nuclear plant last week. Now that I think about it, it could well be that the plant at Deir al-Zur that Israel allegedly destroyed could well have been trying to fit chemical weapons onto Scud warheads. It fits, doesn't it?

Yes, for as much as I know about these things...bopkes...it does all seem to fit.

Most importantly in this regard, why does the military insist on referring to this group--whose leader believed himself to be the Mahdi or no-longer-Hidden Imam--as a "cult?" A cult is "a system of religious worship or ritual" involving "a devoted attachment to, or extravagant admiration for, a person...esp. when regarded as a fad [emphasis added]". Individuals proclaiming themselves the Mahdi are hardly a fad in Islamic history; in both Sunni and Shi`i Islam, the Mahdist claimants over the 14 centuries of Islamic history are too numerous to list here. Were the Fatimids (who ruled Egypt for 250 years in the Middle Ages) a cult? How about the Muwahhids, who ruled the Maghrib and Spain for over a century? Or the Sudanese Mahdists, who took Khartoum and killed the Ottoman governor-general, one Charles Gordon? Every one of these groups had a self-proclaimed Mahdi as its leader. This Najaf Mahdi will not be the only outbreak of eschatological Islam, make no mistake. And if U.S. military intelligence gets a better handle on the fact that Mahdism is a major strain within Islam, not simply an aberrant, occasional cult flare-up, brave folks like MSG Ballard might be better prepared for the next Mahdist battle.

The Glasgow bomber -- possible plans to attack in Canada

THE security services feared Scotland's first home-grown "wannabe suicide bomber" had been preparing to carry out a terrorist attack in Canada, it emerged last night.

Mohammed Atif Siddique was stopped at Glasgow Airport before he could board a flight to Pakistan amid concerns that he might go "off the radar" and join alleged Islamic extremists in planning large-scale terrorist attacks in Ontario.

Siddique was found guilty yesterday of a string of terrorism offences at the High Court in Glasgow and now faces a jail sentence of up to 15 years.

During his trial, the defence and prosecution had argued over whether the 21-year-old IT student was actively involved in promoting terrorist attacks or was merely a "foolishly stupid young man" simply researching Islamic terrorism.

After the verdict, Siddique's solicitor, Aamer Anwar, accused the authorities of launching an unwarranted attack on civil liberties and of creating a climate of fear for young Muslims

More than 60 officers in total were involved in the investigation, with Central Scotland Police aided by other forces, including Strathclyde, Lothian and Borders and Fife.

Some 34 computers and hard drives were examined. More than 5,000 computer discs and DVDs were removed, along with 25 mobile phones and another 19 SIM cards. Almost 700 documents were taken from the computers and more than 1,000 statements taken.

More than 500 "actions" were raised on HOLMES, the police national computer system.

From the moment of Siddique's arrest, police had 110 days to prepare a case against him.

A MARRIED couple who didn't realise they were chatting each other up on the internet are divorcing.

Sana Klaric and husband Adnan, who used the names "Sweetie" and "Prince of Joy" in an online chatroom, spent hours telling each other about their marriage troubles, Metro.co.uk reported.

The truth emerged when the two turned up for a date. Now the pair, from Zenica in central Bosnia, are divorcing after accusing each other of being unfaithful.
"I was suddenly in love. It was amazing. We seemed to be stuck in the same kind of miserable marriage. How right that turned out to be," Sana, 27, said.

Adnan, 32, said: "I still find it hard to believe that Sweetie, who wrote such wonderful things, is actually the same woman I married and who has not said a nice word to me for years".

Charles,

Have you vetted the hamsters?

All domesticated Syrian hamsters kept as pets in the West today are descended from one female of the species. She was found in a burrow in a field in Aleppo in northern Syria in April, 1930, by zoologist Dr Israel Aharoni.

Muslim Brotherhood founded in 1927. Muslim Brotherhood are rats. Rats are kin to hamsters. 9-11 Truth movement started on less evidence.

I for one cannot STAND the thought of some bureaucrat 2000 miles away deciding what I will and will not do, eat, drink, take, wear, buy, drive, etc - and that's exactly what it's coming to. NICOSIA — A Turkish man who broke into a Cyprus bank to steal from the ATM machine was found fast asleep on the floor by a cleaner who raised the alarm, Cypriot police said on Monday.

The cleaner stumbled over the suspect two hours before opening time and called in the police, who turned up to catch a tired man staggering out of the building.

Bank officials said the would-be robber tried to break into the ATM machine -- after entering the building through a window -- but could not crack the code to access the cash.

A 30-year-old Turkish national appeared before a Nicosia court where he was remanded in custody.

Charges dropped against officer in civilian slayings

CAMP PENDLETON --- Charges have been dropped against a Marine captain accused by prosecutors last year of failing to investigate the deaths of two dozen civilians in the city of Haditha in November 2005.

In dismissing the charges, Lt. Gen. James Mattis approved a decision granting McConnell testimonial immunity, meaning testimony at later trials for the other accused men cannot be used against him.

has Charles given any thought to 'roiding up' the hamsters? some buff hamsters on anabolic steroids would probably do twice the work of normal hamsters. It is not like they live forever, any long-term steroid effects would be minimal. If they do a chris benoit, charles or stinky can just run down to the petstore and buy more

Correction: we had previously reported that there had been a new SH historic maximum ice area. Unfortunately, we found a small glitch in our software. The timeseries have now been corrected and are showing that we are very close to, but not yet, a new historic maximum sea ice area for the Southern Hemisphere.

This "small glitch" has wiped away 250 km2 ice

WASHINGTON — An oily substance found splashed on the Vietnam Veterans Memorial this month was the result of vandalism, U.S. Park Police determined.

Sgt. Robert Lachance, a Park Police spokesman, said Monday that a detective made the conclusion, but he declined to provide further details because of the investigation is ongoing.

The Vietnam Veterans Memorial Fund, which built the structure, has offered a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest and conviction in the case.

The oily substance on the black granite wall — which bears the names of more than 58,000 men and women killed or missing in the Vietnam War — was first reported Sept. 7. National Park Service officials said they did not know what the substance was, and at first said it was unclear whether it was the result of vandalism or some kind of accident.

On Monday, dark blotches remained along a stone curb at the base of the wall for much of its length. At least 14 of its 140 inscribed panels appeared to be stained.

Did the Mahdi miss his mark?...did he mistake Iran for Peru?...

...Villagers in southern Peru were struck by a mysterious illness after a meteorite made a fiery crash to Earth in their area, regional authorities said Monday.
Around midday Saturday, villagers were startled by an explosion and a fireball that many were convinced was an airplane crashing near their remote village, located in the high Andes department of Puno in the Desaguadero region, near the border with Bolivia.

Residents complained of headaches and vomiting brought on by a "strange odor," local health department official Jorge Lopez told Peruvian radio RPP.

Seven policemen who went to check on the reports also became ill and had to be given oxygen before being hospitalized, Lopez said.

Rescue teams and experts were dispatched to the scene, where the meteorite left a 100-foot-wide (30-meter-wide) and 20-foot-deep (six-meter-deep) crater, said local official Marco Limache.

"Boiling water started coming out of the crater and particles of rock and cinders were found nearby. Residents are very concerned," he said.

Breaking:

Turkey Blocks Youtube (again)

ANKARA (AFP) — A Turkish court ordered telecom authorities Tuesday to block access to the popular video-sharing website YouTube over videos that allegedly insulted the country's leaders, a report said.

The decision followed a complaint by a resident in the eastern city of Sivas that the site hosted videos containing insults against Turkey's founding father Mustafa Kemal Ataturk, President Abdullah Gul, Prime Minister Recep Tayyip Erdogan and the army, the Anatolia news agency reported.

The court ruling has been forwarded to the state regulatory body, the Telecommunications Board, to be put into effect, the agency said.

YouTube said in a written statement, carried by Anatolia, that it was ready to cooperate with Turkish authorities to resolve the dispute.

In March, the country's largest telecommunications provider, Turk Telekom, blocked access to YouTube on a court order following a clip that allegedly insulted Ataturk.

Ataturk, who proclaimed modern day Turkey in 1923, is seen as a national hero by secular Turks and his legacy is protected under a special law.

Users regained access two days later after YouTube removed the video and Turk Telekom petitioned the court to revoke the ban.

Welcome to the nanny state where we, the government, are there to protect you from yourself. Too fat? We will determine which foods you should eat, how much exercise you will do, and that if you insist on being too fat then we will cut off your healthcare. No reason to deal with someone killing himself with common eating utensils. What's that, all people who are fat aren't lazy, gluttons? Oh, well, then that's just too sad because we have lots of paperwork to do and any exceptions to our rule require extra effort that we aren't willing to do.

I want the government to get out of everything that isn't spelled out in the Constitution as a duty of the government.

That was my EXACT thought - nearly everyone I know has insurance through their employer, how can you say, "You can't work unless you can get insurance. Can't afford insurance? Get a job!" God, unreal - and you're right about the subsidies, it's almost like they'd RATHER people get government paid-for insurance rather than buying it themselves. If they're going to put an employment chokehold on the uninsured, the welfare roles will skyrocket, it's ridiculous.

Letter to the Editor in the Kashmir:

This refers to your Sunday Column on the use of loudspeakers in our mosques. There is no doubt that this has become a great problem for a common man especially in the areas where we have mosques after every 100 meteres. It’s a great blessing to have a worshipping place in a locality, but our wrong approach has turned everything against us. Generally the whole year and particularly in the month of Ramzan our mosques roar. There is no problem if we recite the holy words within the premises of a masjid, but what is the point switching on the amplifiers. We all are Muslims and we wish that more and more people offer prayers, we love to see mosques jam packed. That way we enjoy the blessings of Almighty Allah. But why make it a point that our voice shall reach everyone even if it disturbs him. There are children who sleep, there are patients who need rest or students busy with their studies. Our religion does not teach us to disturb others whatever we may be doing. Using amplifiers is good when the Azan is given so that everybody hears it. There also the pitch of the loudspeaker must be lowered down. We can decrease the volume so that our voice echoes back on us and does not trouble others. I think religious scholars must come forward in this regard so that we learn to be decent in our prayers. God will be pleased with us, if we do good to people.

And all this comparison to auto insurance is so stupid, THAT'S required in case you hurt someone ELSE, for Christ's sake, it's not the same. This is like the helmet laws, also completely intrusive.

You took the words right out of my mouth - STOP TELLING ME WHAT TO DO. You have one document to follow, read it and follow it and leave everything else alone. I'm lucky enough to have chronic arthritis and constant pain with every step I take, and every time I try to get my pain meds, you'd think I was there to rob a freaking bank - because the government has deemed certain medications "controlled," I have to jump through hoops and be made to feel like a criminal because I need something stronger than aspirin to manage my pain. Oh, but if I want to drink or smoke myself into an early grave, no problemo - the liquor and cigarette lobbies make sure of that.

There's not one thing going on in DC these days that's not somehow tied to money, politics and power. Hence the forced health insurance - talk about a lobby! Those corporations will make billions off of this - off the taxpayers, of course, because, as pointed out by so many sane people here, if you can't get a job without insurance, that means the government - I mean the taxpayers - will have to pay your premiums. Makes me want to scream.

Disturbing thread...

...let’s say for sake of argument, that instead of a 6%u2032 plus white male moonbat, the questions were being asked by a barely 5%u2032 attractive young women who was not white. Let’s think for a minute about the possibility that a young female conservative of Asian ethnicity (perhaps the next Michelle Malkin) was asking questions of the junior senator from Massachusetts.

How would this group of amateur pundits react to the instant physical intervention by law enforcement at the close of her question, regardless of how eloquent she may have been in the heat of the moment?

I counted at least 6 armed police officers dealing with one moonbat who did not seem interested in simply removing the cause of the disturbance from the venue, but placing into custody someone who based on evidence I’ve observed to date, was guilty of nothing other than extremely misguided political views, and a Terry Moran admiration complex.

The kid’s an idiot.

I don’t believe police intervention was necessary at the time it was implemented.

I don’t believe the taser was a necessary tool to restrain the young man.

I don’t believe he was inciting a riot.

He was a naive young kid asking an ideological “icon” of his some moonbat questions.

Last time I knew, that wasn’t a crime in these United States, and a lot of brave young kids are fighting so kids like this idiot can ask questions of their elected leaders.

It's raining women in Paki Politics, sure to drive the mullahs mad:

Lahore, Sept.18 : Pakistan's President General Pervez Musharraf will not have one, but two genuine women politicians and a couple of wannabe politicians like his wife Sehba Musharraf and Nawaz Sharif's wife Kulsoom to deal with in the run-up to the forthcoming general elections.

Former Premier Benazir Bhutto is already negotiating with Musharraf for her return to Pakistan after nearly nine years of self-exile, and now her estranged sister-in-law and Pakistan People's Party-Shaheed Bhutto Chairwoman Ghinva Bhutto has said that she will reinterpret the slogan 'all power to the people'.

Sehba Musharraf is being touted as an alternative presidential candidate of the Pakistan Muslim League (Quami) should the country's Supreme Court rule against her husband's chances of becoming Pakistan's President for a second time while in uniform.

Nawaz Sharif's wife -- Kulsoom -- is reportedly making noises about returning to Pakistan after the fasting month of Ramadan to revive the Sharifs' political fortunes seven years after going into exile.

The Government, it seems, does not have a problem with her returning to Pakistan, but whether she will be allowed to contest the general elections is still a matter of conjecture.

Talking to reporters here on Monday, Ghinva said that the military establishment should be relegated to guarding the nation's borders, and called for the structure of governance in Pakistan to be changed through a free and fair exercise of the will of the people.

It is government provided health care.
You will have to go the the Federal Health Care Admin building to sign up.
Then, of course, if you engage in any un PC un-healthy activities you will most likely be turned down. IE: Smoking, drinking, eating the wrong foods (Mickey D's trans fats), driving without a seat belt, etc.

Mind you, engaging in any PC un-healthy activities will be tolerated.
IE unprotected gay sex, drug use, etc.

This has nothing to do with healthcare.
It has everything to do with power and control.

Stirring up trouble all they can, tattle-taling all the time, making it up if they have to, then flinging poo all over the place like they're the victim. Re: Hillarycare

Over the last few years I've been taking family members off health insurance--even though we have a medical condition that runs in the family.

Forty years ago, health insurance made sense. The cost of health care was more reasonable, so you paid a modest premium as protection against big medical bills.

But it doesn't work that way anymore. Thanks to years of medicare, huge malpractice suits, and other gov't regulation, the cost of health care has skyrocketed. You can spend $3,000 per day just for occupying a bed in a hospital.

Insurance companies are in business to make money, as they should be, and the only way they have been able to respond is by raising rates and decreasing benefits.

Many people think our biggest health care problem is the number of uninsured. Nonsense. Today's health insurance is not much of a deal. If you are self-employed, you can pay over $1,000 per month to insure your family. But that's with high deductibles, co-pays, and a benefits cap.

Many people don't know that many health insurance plans limit benefits to $1 million. Really, when you buy health insurance you are simply paying for a $400,000 loan.

Imagine if we went back to a free market system. Imagine your doctor didn't have to go in with four other docs on an office with a staff of fifteen clerks who spend all day filing and tracking forms.

I've found that many doctors will charge you 50% of their standard fee if you pay at the time of service. Because they all know that they have 50% overhead with today's bureaucratic system. There are other ways to cut health care costs that I've discovered. We do routine blood tests at home. I buy prescriptions from Drugstore.com. And I negotiate with doctors. It works.

A burden is he to hear
We'll get there
For I know
He would not encumber me
So don't tase me, there my brother

If I've Bin Laden at all
I'm Laden with sadness
That everyone's heart

Pakistan Court Aquits Christian in blasphemy case, Christian in hiding from "muslim militants".

Despite Monday's ruling acquitting him of the blasphemy charges, Masih is still in hiding at an unknown location amid fears of renewed violence against him. He has been living separately from family members and his 12 siblings since he was released on bail in January, family members and his defense team said.

Muslim militants first began attacking Masih's home in September when news of the alleged desecration of the Quran spread across the neighborhood. Masih was soon arrested by police and brought to a nearby jail where he was allegedly beaten by at least one official. Following that incident his mother's health deteriorated and she died in March this year, said Catholic lawyer Khalil Tahir, chairman of Adal Trust, a Non Governmental Organization in Faisalabad.

He told reporters he had mixed feelings about Monday's verdict. "Although Masih has been proved innocent, those responsible for his and his family’s mental torture and above all for the death of his poor mother, are still at large," the lawyer said in a statement distributed by AsiaNews agency.

I forgot to mention the best way to save money on health care.

It's called shop and compare.

There are huge price differentials. Some of the best hospitals are the most cost-effective.

But people with insurance or medicare never shop. So there is little price competition.

I am 100% confident that if we went to a totally free market health care system within months you would see the bureaucracy shrink and prices plummet.

Jail for soldier who paid to be shot to avoid Iraq

NEW YORK (Reuters) - A 20-year-old soldier who paid someone to shoot him in the leg to avoid being redeployed to Iraq will serve one year in jail, prosecutors said on Tuesday.

Jonathan Aponte spent his first tour of duty in Iraq as a supply clerk on a military base and was never involved in combat, the Bronx District Attorney's office said.

Aponte was shot in the knee on July 9. Prosecutors allege that Aponte and his then-wife paid a Bronx man, Felix Padilla, 24, $500 to shoot him. Aponte then told police that he had been wounded during a robbery.

Aponte had also allegedly fabricated stories about his time in Iraq, including telling a grand jury he had witnessed a soldier's suicide and come under fire in combat. But Bronx Assistant District Attorney James Cudden said none of this was true.

You're so right - my husband is a vet, and his care is a joke. 6 weeks for an appt, 2 years + wait for surgery, no above and beyond care (like a simple MRI, forget it); he spent 7 days in the hospital a month ago and the doctor wrote him a script for a nebulizer, which he's desperately needed for years, he has chronic asthma. He took the script to the VA, and they offered to LOAN him one for 5 days, if he brought it back at the end. A nebulizer is something you need to have in the event of an attack, not something you need for a little while, it was appalling...on the other hand, I pay out of pocket for my care. I LOVE my doctor, he spends tons of time with me, knows my name when I call (he actually answers his phone!), and I never wait more than a day to see him. The VA is a perfect example of why government subsidized healthcare is a bad idea.

I question your "fair share" of inherently unfair taxes...

However, all self-employed people are expected to accurately report their income. There are serious financial and legal penalties for not doing so. So I don't see why a doctor in private practice is any different than an attorney in private practice.

Mitt: Amad dinnahjacket should be greeted with an indictment:

NEW YORK - GOP presidential hopeful Mitt Romney thinks the United Nations has it all wrong on Iran, saying Monday that country's blustery leader should be indicted, not invited to speak to the General Assembly.
President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad should be greeted next week at the New York headquarters with an "indictment under the Genocide Convention," Romney wrote in a letter to U.N. Secretary General Ban Ki-Moon.
"I think the invitation should be withdrawn," Romney told reporters. "I think, instead, Ahmadinejad should be indicted."
Romney, whose role as chief of the 2002 Winter Games made him something of a Utah favorite son, suggested Ahmadinejad's hostility towards Israel, support of Hezbollah and alleged pursuit of nuclear weapons amount to a statement of intent to pursue genocide.
If the U.N. fails to withdraw the invitation, "the United States must reconsider its level of support and funding for the United Nations," the former Massachusetts governor said.
A spokeswoman for Ban said she was unaware of Romney's letter. Next week will mark the Iranian leader's third visit to New York - which usually draws thousands of protesters who object to his defiance of Israel and the U.S.

Your Tax Dollars At Work At the UN

Two weeks after Israel's alleged bombing raid in Syria, which some foreign reports said targeted North Korean nuclear material, the UN's nuclear watchdog elected Syria as deputy chairman of its General Conference on Monday.

The 51st session of the General Conference of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) opened in Vienna on Monday and will run through Friday.

The Syrian news agency SANA proudly reported the election on Tuesday, adding that Syria was also successful in including "the Israeli nuclear arsenal as an item on the agenda of the conference."

The agenda for the meeting includes the item "Israeli nuclear capabilities and threat." While Iran will be a focus of the discussions, there is no item on the agenda referring to the Islamic Republic by name.

Israel's Foreign Ministry had "no public comment" on Syria's election.

But Gerald Steinberg, chairman of Bar-Ilan University's political science department and an authority on nonproliferation, said the election "reflects the absurdity of the political process inside the IAEA."

The deputy chairman has no real power and is merely a symbolic post, similar to a deputy president of the UN General Assembly or a deputy speaker of the Knesset, he said. However, Steinberg added, "this move shows how little these types of international frameworks can really do when some of the main players are also the main violators of the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty."

Steinberg said that both Iraq and Iran have held similar positions within the IAEA in the past. He also said there was no connection between the political level and the organization's technological branches under the directorship of Mohamed ElBaradei, which inspect nuclear facilities.

The General Conference, made up of some 144 countries, is the least important of the IAEA's three main bodies. The other two bodies are the Board of Governors and the Secretariat.

The General Conference meets annually to approve budgets and to discuss nuclear-related issues and IAEA policy.%u2022

Dutch Firm Charged for Exports to Iran

NEW HAVEN, Conn. (AP) — A Dutch aviation services company, its owner and two other companies have been charged with exporting parachutes and aircraft parts to Iran in violation of U.S. embargoes, federal prosecutors said Tuesday.

Authorities allege the defendants bought the items from companies in Connecticut, Arizona, Florida, Kansas and New Hampshire. The charges also include making false statements on export control documents.

"Keeping America's critical technology from falling into the hands of state sponsors of terror has never been more important," Assistant U.S. Attorney General Kenneth Wainstein said.

The defendants named in the recently unsealed complaint filed in Washington are Aviation Services International B.V., an aircraft parts supply company based in the Netherlands, and the company's owner, Robert Kraaipoel.

No choices in doctors, waiting lists similar to any of the various socialist country hospitals, and if people are unaware of the billions totally wasted already in Medicare and other various government run medical entities.
One of the greatetst examples of government controled fiascos, is the VA.

There is absolutely nothing in the U.S. Constitution that states that the government is supposed to provide anything for me, other than to uphold the Constitution and protect our shores.

Somehow these idiots in politics, have gone away from the Constitution, and once again try to impliment the history failure proven ideas of the socialists.

If we go to mandatory health insurance, you can bet that within a few years we will see some or all of the following:

- Health care rationing
- Waiting lists
- Limited consumer choice
- Hospitals run like government agencies (phones that ring 30 times before being answered, employees who can't be fired, etc.)
- Higher prices
- Higher premiums
- Higher taxes

The math is clear. Make today's insurers take everyone who applies, and they will have no choice but to raise rates on everyone. The gov't will then accuse the insurance companies of excessive profits. Then you will see the gov't create a national insurance monopoly, driving most if not all private insurance companies out of business. It will be socialized medicine in every way but name.

It's amazing how Canada and the US make each other's mistakes. Canada is getting a taste of US-style street crime circa 1977. The US long since solved those problems (except in the ghetto, where it's not solvable) and the ways to reduce crime are well-known. Therefore Canadian cities are doing exactly the opposite. In fact, they are basically doing the same things that New York did in the 1970s: coddle the criminals, ignore drug use in the streets, sanctify panhandlers as "society's victims" - the whole enchilada.

Meanwhile stateside, an alarming proportion of the electorate is taking centralized, government-run healthcare quite seriously, just as Canada is gradually awakening from the 30 year nightmare of sub-standard care, 18 month waiting lists and other atrocities in the name of Marx.

Saudi Cleric Calls out Bin Laden

RIYADH, Sept 18 (Reuters) - A leading Saudi cleric has publicly denounced Osama bin Laden, a rare move among clerics in his native Saudi Arabia who have avoided direct criticism of the al Qaeda leader.

Salman al-Awdah issued his "open letter to Osama bin Laden" on his Web site this week (www.islamtoday.net) and read it out on a show he presents on Saudi-owned pan-Arab channel MBC.

Western and Arab critics of Saudi Arabia's hardline religious establishment have often criticised senior clerics for failing to unequivocally distance themselves from the mastermind of 9/11 attacks that killed 3,000 people.

"Brother Osama, how much blood has been spilt? How many innocents among children, elderly, the weak and women have been killed and made homeless in the name of al Qaeda?" he said.

"The ruin of an entire people, as is happening in Afghanistan and Iraq, ... cannot make Muslims happy," he said, attacking al Qaeda's policy of revolt across the region.

"Who benefits from turning countries like Morocco, Algeria, Lebanon or Saudi Arabia into places where fear spreads and no one can feel safe?"

Al-Awdah said al Qaeda's actions had led Western governments to rein in Muslim charity work around the world and Arab governments to jail thousands.

Michael Totten just posted Anbar Awakens Part II: Hell is Over

An amazing quote from his report:

“It was nothing we did,” said Marine Lieutenant Colonel Drew Crane who was visiting for the day from Fallujah. “The people here just couldn’t take it anymore.”

What he said next surprised me even more than what I was seeing.

“You know what I like most about this place?” he said.

“What’s that?” I said.

“We don’t need to wear body armor or helmets,” he said.

I was poleaxed. Without even realizing it, I had taken off my body armor and helmet. I took my gear off as casually as I do when I take it off after returning to the safety of the base after patrolling. We were not in the safety of the base and the wire. We were safe because we were in Ramadi.

Gosh, I love our soldiers. :)

Yes.
You will not be able to fire incompetent docs and nurses. They will be part of the union.
Good docs and nurses will still end up in private practice to serve the rich liberals.

Yep.

On the other hand, when we had to pay for a major surgery a few years ago, I didn't hesitate to let the docs and staff know I was paying out of my own pocket. I have never seen such attentiveness and good care. Plus, we went out-of-state to one of the best hospitals in the world, and the bill was 50% of what it would have been at the closest major hospital.

We, too, pay out of pocket. We are able to select our own team of doctors and hospital(s). All pricing is discussed at the same time as treatments and negotiated.

The care has been and is EXCELLENT!

/Our checkbook wasn't very exciting though. But, in the end, worth it for the final result of excellent surgery, care and treatment.

Hillary's proposed health insurance law would require citizens to have health insurance BEFORE they could have a job?

Uh, how does one go about paying the premiums - if one doesn't have a job to begin with?

It's called setting the stage for the liberals' dream:

SINGLE PAYER HEALTH CARE SYSTEM

Just like they have in Cuba. And the UK. Places where people who are too expensive to treat are lied to and told there is "nothing modern medicine can do for you" and allowed to die.

(In the UK they had a policy that anyone over 55 who needed kidney dialysis was refused treatment. Too expensive. I don't know if that policy is still in effect. Probably not after all the bad publicity.)

This is one of the more entertaining threads in a while.

Meanwhile, a funny story about a dumb peacenik march from the Sacramento News and Review. Much of it is typical potty-mouth lefty-speak, but at least the guy is honest about the typical protest, described as "a smattering of people, varying from the deeply concerned to the marginally loony."

We're f*cked: ‘Massive’ anti-war rally on Capitol steps nose bombs

The editor of SN&R made a bad call. As a freelance writer, I pitched my services to cover a peace rally on the west steps of the state Capitol building last Friday, September 7, and the editor went for it.

As it turned out, there wasn't much of a story there, but it was impossible to tell in advance that the event would be such a flop. . . .

Without a trace of irony, one of the first speakers at the event shouted into the microphone, "This is what democracy looks like," and then tried to lead the pathetically small crowd in chanting those words, but the effort died. There may, however, have been more truth than poetry in the observation. When it comes to imposing the popular will on the people who are in charge, this exercise in pissing up a rope just might be what democracy looks like these days, at least as it's practiced in the United States of America.

An hour into the event, a woman passed me with a disappointed look on her face and said, "This is pitiful."

And it was. "We are not insignificant," a speaker read from his prepared speech, but the numbers assembled before him gave lie to his words. And the repeated references to the will of the people seemed pointedly indifferent to the fact of the rather listless group that milled around, carrying the same sorts of banners and placards that might have been seen a couple of generations ago in much larger and much younger gatherings.

407 simonml  Tue, Sep 18, 2007 6:18:32pm

I have to disagree with a lot of the comments about the VA system. As messed up as it is, it is able to provide necessary health care free of charge to tens of thousands of veterans every year. If a person is unable to pay, the VA will never charge them anything, not even so much as a copay. They also provide drug rehabilitation, long term nursing home care and even short term housing (for sick AND healthy vets) free of charge for those in need.

I have worked extensively in the VA system and its a hassle as is any government endeavor. But the vets who need help are always helped.

IMHO, we should do more for those who have so bravely served our country, so the VA system should be expanded. Help even more soldiers. If anyone is entitled to free health care, it is definitely them.

Something these idiot leftists never can comprehend.

Remember LBJ's (not so) Great Society? End all, be all of poverty here in the US. Ruined the black family.

Whenever I hear a politician say we need to "Help the Poor!", I am reminded of this story:

3 Then took Mary a pound of ointment of spikenard, very costly, and anointed the feet of Jesus, and wiped his feet with her hair: and the house was filled with the odour of the ointment. 4 Then saith one of his disciples, Judas Iscariot, Simon's son, which should betray him, 5 Why was not this ointment sold for three hundred pence, and given to the poor? 6 This he said, not that he cared for the poor; but because he was a thief, and had the bag, and bare what was put therein. 7 Then said Jesus, Let her alone: against the day of my burying hath she kept this. 8 For the poor always ye have with you; but me ye have not always.

Check their motives always!

Just skimmed through Hillary's health plan.

The basic plan is not a bad idea, have a pool of insurers that people can choose from and which they can not be excluded. This is essentially the current federal employee health plan extended to the whole country. The problems will be in how it is put in place. They can add lots and lots of very burdensome regulations that will raise costs. Insurance companies will be competing for business which could lower cost but will just mean they will drive doctors even more crazy than they do now. This can be controlled a little if doctors can refuse insurance but I think the plan would not allow this. We used to have a cheap plan. It was cheap because the plan refused to pay the doctors for lots of things. After a year or two doctors sent us letters saying "no more" they would not take the insurance anymore. We switched to another plan to keep our doctors. The plan also has half its savings from tax increases on the rich (not sure how that is a health care savings?) the others savings are very nebulous, such as reduced over-billing, more efficient medical care etc.. The plan would be very expensive at least $4,000 per person, so say $184 billion give or take for the 46 million uninsured. This assumes no current business drop subsidizing health care. Lets say business A pays 80 percent of the cost of its employees health care. Under the Plan they could get the Gov. to pay this for them by dropping the benefit from their packages and just saying get your money from the tax credit. This means the government would end up covering many more people, plus without exclusions the average price would also go up. My daughter pays $576 a year for health care because she is young and healthy, her bill would go to $4000 under this plan (minus whatever the Gov. would pick up). The plan also lists saving funds from savings in drugs, which means price fixing, never a good idea.

There was time...when medicine was not "' how much money can I get"...Doctors did it...because they felt the need to help...to serve...Like the police or firemen do...that was a long time ago...how sad.

And they made house calls...and actually would sit down with you when you were in their office, and talk to you. Now it is like being on an assembly line.

When I was first diagnosed as a diabetic almost 12 years ago, my endocrinologist would spend close to 45 minutes between the exam (every 12 weeks) and just talking about how I was doing, etc. There were 3 endocrinologists in the practice. Now? 7, a Nurse practitioner, 2 phlebotomists, a diabetes educator and a diabetes dietician ...and he doesn't even take us (my husband is also now a Type 2) into the office. Average time with each of us? 15 minutes. I bring a list of questions, and a lot of the time he doesn't have time to cover what I need to know.

We are in the middle of an pandemic of type 2 diabetes...and there are nowhere near the needed number of endocrinologists needed..the bitch's theory was the Noah's Ark approach: 2 specialists..the rest study family practice. This is dangerous. It is just not possible for a GP or family practitioner to be totally versed in so many different conditions, or for that matter to be up to date.

As a senior citizen, I am scared for our kids and grandkids. I order my meds from a registered Canadian pharmacy, and pay roughly 40-50% of what a US pharmacy (Costco included)...I was very lucky, as the owner of the pharmacy sends an email with info on Medicare, etc. He explained the very complicated system better than anyone else, and thus I took his advice on not signing up for Part D..and instead, keeping my present supplemental insurance that includes drug coverage. Thus, in addition to the initial savings, I get back an additional 50%, and avoided ever having to worry about falling into the donut hole.

My husband was not so lucky because of the insurance plan he was on.

May G-d help us all if the bitch wins. We had better get out the vote to insure that this never happens.

Thanks.

I fell off of the wagon. Taking a week off with the family down to the Outer Banks next week. Going to give it another try.

I fall down a lot (told you I was clumsy) but I always get up and try again.

Practically a freekin' weeble I am.

My apology if this has already been posted. The photo shows that the woman's nose stud is tiny. I wonder what the rules are re. religious garb?

"A Hindu has been sacked from her job at a British Airways VIP lounge for wearing a tiny nose stud. Amrit Lalji, 43, who refused to remove the stud as it is integral to her religious beliefs, said she was devastated by her bosses' decision.

"The case follows the suspension of Heathrow worker Nadia Eweida for wearing a crucifix."

Depends if they called up RON PAUL from AAA before the game

To all youse Sox And Yanks fans, I see the -2 on my comment. 'Twas but a joke. I have always enjoyed the famous rivalries in baseball, such as yours, Cubs vs. White Sox, Dodgers vs. Giants. It's what adds the excitement to the game.

May the best team win!

 Frank says:

It began with lyrics, but even looking at the PMRC fund raising letter in the last paragraph, at the bottom of the page, it starts looking like it's branching into other areas when it says 'We realize that this material's pervaded other aspects of society' and it's like 'What, you gonna fix it all for me?'
