Line of the Day

Wed, Sep 19, 2007 at 10:58:46 am PDT

Our line of the day comes from the New York Post; I’m not sure if the reporter, Larry Celona, was being sarcastic, but I’d like to think so: Islam leaflet school bust.

September 19, 2007 — A Queens teen was arrested yesterday after placing fliers in his teachers’ mailboxes asking them to convert to Islam - then made threats once he was caught, authorities said.

Yaseen Chowdhury, 17, of Woodside, wrote the fliers himself and put them in the mailboxes at the Renaissance Charter School in Jackson Heights, sources said. When confronted there about the fliers, he made unspecified verbal threats, according to the sources. Chowdhury was charged with aggravated harassment as a hate crime.

A Department of Education spokesman did not return a call seeking comment.

The student’s religion was not immediately known.

Well, that's one of the more obtuse things I've read recently.

If he's putting flyers in his teachers' mailboxes asking them to convert to Islam, I somehow don't think he's a Baptist.

OT: While the largest political party in Sweden, the Social Democrats, are openly launching a formal cooperation with the Muslim Brotherhood, for the mutual benefit of both (Muslims always vote for Leftist parties,) Muslims are openly threatening the life of cartoonist Lars Vilks ("Let his destiny be a lesson for others," as one Muslim preacher warned during a free speech seminar in Stockholm organized by humanists and ex-Muslims).

Islamists push for boycott of Swedish firms

Websites run by militant Islamists have listed the names of over 100 Swedish companies as possible targets in the ongoing row surrounding the publication in Swedish newspapers of a caricature of the Muslim prophet Muhammad. Detailing the addresses, maps and logos of Swedish businesses, the websites called for their readers to boycott these firms and "take revenge" on Sweden for the publication of a controversial cartoon by artist Las Vilks.

This progressive, experimental school has the feel of a small-town school, with kids from kindergarten through 12th grade under the same roof. Housed in a former department store, an unusual architectural design gives the building a homey feel and encourages children of different ages to mix. Kindergarten and 1st grade classrooms on the ground floor open on a central indoor playroom equipped with playground equipment. It serves as a gathering place for parents at the end of the day, and for teachers to meet informally between classes. Upstairs, classrooms open on a central lounge with sofas and carpeted areas-places for students to chat with teachers or one another.

Founded in 1993 by a group of teachers who wanted a school that was run jointly by staff and parents, the Renaissance School has attracted super-involved parents and hard-working, talented teachers. Half a dozen parents work at the school; others volunteer on a regular basis. Children call grown-ups by their first names. Children with disabilities are integrated into regular classes. It's sometimes noisy and a bit disorganized, and the teachers spend a fair amount of time cajoling children to settle down and behave. But it has a joyous, liberating atmosphere, tests scores are respectable, and parents are enthusiastic. Classrooms have sofas and tables-not desks. Tables are moved around according to whether children are working in small groups or meeting together as a class. The cafeteria has round tables, which encourages children to talk to one another-rather than scream across the long institutional tables so common in other schools. The noise is actually low enough to carry on a regular conversation.

Whenever possible, activities reinforce lessons from books. In a 5th-grade math-and-science class, children studied the reaction times of astronauts and learned to calculate a "mean" by dropping strips of paper and calculating how long it took them to catch the paper with either hand. Sixth graders studying China made Chinese robes from brown paper and learned to write Chinese characters. There is a lot of group work in all the classes and it can take a long time for children to settle down into groups. And kids are grouped in different ways. For example, in a 6th grade math class, kids were divided into groups based on how many baskets they made, tossing wadded up papers into wastebaskets; another day it might be by shoe size.

I'd like to take this moment to say that I hate "hate crimes." I hope the "hate crime" wasn't the placing of calls to Islam in their mailboxes. I hope, at least, that it was the verbal threats. However, certain threats are crimes anyway. I believe, and lizard lawyers/police help me out, that the key is if the threat is credible.

Your best buddy throws a surprise party and you smile and say, "I'm gonna kill you." = not a credible threat. Career criminal says to man who witnessed against him, "When I get out, I'm gonna kill you." = credible.

Hold on to your hats - Dan Rather is suing CBS for $70 million.

Mr. Rather, 75, asserts that the network violated his contract by giving him insufficient airtime on “60 Minutes” after forcing him to step down as anchor of the “CBS Evening News” in March 2005. He also contends that the network committed fraud by commissioning a “biased” and incomplete investigation of the flawed Guard broadcast and, in the process, “seriously damaged his reputation.” As plaintiffs, the suit names CBS and its chief executive, Leslie Moonves; Viacom and its chief executive, Sumner Redstone; and Andrew Heyward, the former president of CBS News.

No, what seriously damaged his reputation is lying to the American people about his Bush TNG reporting and how the network verified its story.

The fact is - there was no verification, and the documents were bogus. He continued to stand by them, on grounds of being fake but accurate, and now he thinks that CBS owes him millions because they shuffled him off to Buffalo - aka 60 minutes.

Must I then with this menial implement toil in base servility; and this too, without the hope of becoming one day free? Never, never.
Away. away.
O, what a change is here! Yesterday! what was I yesterday? Opulent and free. Today! today! a beggar and a slave! O my countrymen! where now that Roman pride, that Spartan valour, that enthusiatic zeal, which led you on to freedom and to glory, that here in this vile nest of pirates beneath a sun whose pestilant rays spread death around, thy fellow countrymen must bend like over burdened beasts, with slavery and shame! O ye spirits of their ascended chiefs, look from your blest abodes, rekindle in their hearts that godlike flame which mark'd your glorious course, 'till Africa, humbled by a just revenge, shall learn henceforth to respect their rights.

We have a possible match on the guns from the OT post in a previous thread about muslim police women.

Apologies if this has been posted.

[Link: www.airgunsonly.com...]

At the very least, I think we're on the right track.

I posted on this immediately after the original question.
Its a match airgun; there is no mystery about this.

They're commonly used for training, and with low noise, negligible recoil, no smoke generation, low cost for rounds, and actually MORE accuracy than most centerfire handguns at short ranges, they're ideal for that purpose.

As to which exact model. . .that probably could be identified based on the image by someone who is more familiar with them than me, but honest. . .who cares which model the Iranian women's force trains with?

There are a number of such guns that have a similar appearance. They all use anatomic adjustable grips, and the tube under the barrel holds compressed air (or CO2 depending on the model). The best guns are all European made, mostly German.

If you're interested in acquiring one of these the Baikal IZH 46M is considered by many to be the best value in terms of performance for the buck in a gun that could be competitive. This one is manually cocked, and doesn't have a gas cylinder so its strictly one shot at a time.

How about getting on the horn and calling around in the neighborhood, Mr Reporter? Probably could turn up someone who knows where the perp goes to, um, worship, and how many times per day, at that. There were multiple fliers; a teacher might be able to let you see one. Since there was uproar at that egregiously loosey-goosey school, the fliers must have been something, eh? he made unspecified verbal threats, according to the sources

When they become specified threats please do print them.

What is the deal, here? Some asswipe puts religious recruiter notes in teacher's mailboxes, and they can't even print what he supposedly threatened them with?

Either the teachers are complete chickenshits and clammed up, they made up these threats, or the newspaper won't print what the threats were. I'm interested: which is it?

The next time a manic street preacher hands me a leaflet and tells me I'm going to hell, I know I'm running straight for the newspaper. "He threatened me!"

OT . . .HAPPY CONSTITUTION DAY everyone!

Sadly, I wasn't aware that today was Constitution Day until my daughter called from college. She was rabid about an program she attended (walked out of) as an extra credit assignment. The speaker began his speech telling his audience of mush minds that the American Constitution was formulated by a group of wealthy white land owners presenting illegitimate ideals. (Where's that nasty pirate speak when you need it) ARGHHH!

Panelists include Dr. Kenneth Yglesias, Coast District chancellor; Jerry Patterson, Coast District trustee and former U.S. Congressman; Robert Dees, OCC president; and Dr. Harrick F. Arnold, OCC professor of political science and history. Throughout the week, in honor of Constitution Day, OCC history and political science professors will give special emphasis to the U.S. Constitution during their lectures.

Such special emphasis belongs in the trash heap. Disgusting.
