Phony document-monger Dan Rather is going to be on Larry King’s show at 6 pm Pacific to talk about his absurd $70 million lawsuit against CBS, and here’s an open thread to live-blog the weasels...

Is he the boxing promoter? And how about those pictures of Oscar de la Hoya.

Rather's pretty deranged these days, and may say something really crazy.

I posted this a few threads back but thought it was worth repeating...

Put down your drink before reading this one...

by Marvin Kitman

The launch of Katie Couric a year ago as the anchor of the CBS Evening News was hailed by CBS as the biggest thing in news since, well, the invention of denture fixative commercials. It was also the biggest flop. The CBS Evening News Without Dan Rather or Bob Schieffer had its lowest ratings since Nielsen began tracking evening news shows in 1987. This turn of events stunned CBS executives--who had given her the famous "Kiss Me Kate" contract, which paid Couric $15 million a year--and the news consultants who thought she was the answer to CBS being mired in third place in the network news race for the past ten years. The news doctors who have been paid millions trying to fix the show for the past year have only made it worse. It didn't matter how many times the consultants got it wrong. Remember what they did to poor Dan Rather? Smile, don't smile. Wear a sweater, don't wear a sweater. Stand up to deliver the news, sit down. It is a law of the news consultancy/network relationship: If we are paying so much money, it must be right. Otherwise, why are we paying so much money?

yadda yadda yadda...

...CBS president William Paley made Ed Murrow shut up--by canceling his shows. In the dark ages after Murrow, the most powerful commentary on network news was the raised eyebrow of David Brinkley after reading a piece of news on NBC. A generation of telegenic and totally uninvolved journalists followed.

In short, what CBS (and all the others) need is a new Ed Murrow. Good news! There's already one out there on the launchpad who has demonstrated his qualifications. I'm talking about Keith Olbermann of MSNBC. He has the journalistic chops and the mind, heart, instincts and courage.

Olbermann, who anchors a one-hour nightly news show on MSNBC called Countdown With Keith Olbermann, closes his show every night by saying "1,547th [for instance] day since Mission Accomplished in Iraq," an hommage to Ted Koppel's "Iran Hostage" coverage, which evolved into Koppel's late-night ABC news show Nightline (the MSNBC show was originally Countdown: Iraq). Then Olbermann throws his crumpled script at the camera, which shatters, a simulated digital effect (something Koppel never did).

"Our charge for the immediate future is to stay out of the way of the news," he explained when the show debuted on March 31, 2003. "News is news. We will not be screwing around with it," a reference to Bill O'Reilly, his rival over at Fox News in the 8 pm time slot. "It will not be a show in which opinion and facts are juxtaposed so as to appear to be the same."

Olbermann, who looks more like a high school teacher than a glitzy TV anchor, is the one who cuts and dices the news of the day into five segments, what he and his staff consider the day's top stories, illustrated with news reports from NBC News correspondents, interviews with newsmakers, whom he treats courteously, interspersed with signature witty interjections (calling 9/11 Rudolph "Giuliani's red badge of courage"), further interrupted by new ways to look at the news.

Bwaaahahahahaha!

And who is Marvin Kitman?

Marvin Kitman is the author of The Man Who Would Not Shut Up: The Rise of Bill O'Reilly. He is currently the media critic of the Huffington Post and was media critic at Newsday for thirty-five years.

Hey guys, I hate to start with an OT so soon, but I was just looking at Atlas Shrugs and she has this very interesting post up about Jimmy Carter. Pamela says the folleing about the video, which the link leads you to:

This five minute video refutes the lies that Jimmy Carter has spread about the Jews and Israel in his books and speeches. It goes point by point, exposing the lies and showing Jimmy Carter's duplicitous nature in regard to his defense of Arab tyranny while criticizing Israel democracy. It further exposes the truth in his taking funds from Arab sources, defending Palestinian terror at all costs and his coddling of the terrorist Yasir Arafat.

You can't "disprove" Dan Rather. Granted, he can't prove his documents are real either. But that's not the point. The point is...

uh...

What's the point?

Personally, Dan Rather taking $70 million from CBS might not be a terrible thing.

The title of Rather's story, Plastic Planes, indicates a lack of grounding in science. High-performance carbon composites are far stronger than plastics.

So proud to log my first-ever comment on LGF. If it wasn't for Charles (whom Rather terms "pajamacocci"--a fungus or bacteria that must be sterilized) the story would have stood. How many other sheer fabrications did Rather perpetrate on the public in his 40+ years at CBS? BTW, does anyone know how Mapes' lawsuit against LGF turned out? Can't imagine Charles would settle as he was just exposing a clear media lie.

By the way, Rather's attempt come-back with that Dreamliner story? It's not flying with Wired Magazine, The Professor of Mechanical, Materials, and Aerospace Engineering at UCLA and editor-in-chief of the Journal of Composite Materials, or a company that specializes in the materials.

By taking a cheap shot at Boeing, Dan Rather may be headed for a comeback less graceful than Britney Spears’ performance at the MTV Music Awards.

On the most recent edition of his new show, he reported on Tuesday that the new 787 Dreamliner aircraft may be unsafe. Since then, dozens of news agencies have jumped on the bandwagon. Most of them are reporting that the carbon fiber frame may not be as safe as aluminum. Few have bothered to question Rather’s claims that the composite materials are brittle, more likely to shatter on impact, and prone to emit poisonous chemicals when ignited.

I haven’t yet watched the segment, but I have read the full transcript [doc]. As a researcher trained materials engineering, I consider the written summaries that appeared in the news today to be very misleading...

While there is a lot of weight behind the argument that composite materials are not as well-studied as aircraft aluminum, the reasoning behind the flurry of recent articles may be faulty. First off, if a plane crashes, the composite frame will definitely not be the only source of toxic fumes. Second, high performance composites have been used in fighter aircraft and for years. Sports cars, race cars, and train cars made from composite materials have endured fantastic crashes. Claims that the impact toughness of carbon fiber is inadequate may be premature.

He also got opinion from Tom Hahn, the professor mentioned, and he's with the author of the Wired story.

I still remember what Mark Steyn said -- no one cares about George Bush's service in the National Guard anyway.

The Swift Boat Vet truth-tellers were way more compelling. They were there with John and they all knew the real story. How inconvenient.

Notice how the left-wing machine dismisses the Swift VETs, and gives any left-wing loon with a fake story to peddle the time of day.

How much satisfaction do you get knowing that you helped put the lie to this fool and his treachery? I think many of us found this site because of your exposure of Rather. And, I think many of us stay because we know there is more things like this yet to come (aside from the great postings and hi-sterical commentary from the lizards, and Ed Mahmoud's weather reports). I hope Rather wakes up screaming at night because of the part you played, and I hope the rest of them are a little more careful because of you and the rest.

121 Lucius Septimius  Thu, Sep 20, 2007 6:12:23pm

re: #102 Charles

Hence my comment on the earlier thread.

Newsmen used to portray themselves as the gumshoes of the media (one of the things that makes IowaHawk's Rather parody so good). But they have given that up. It's all posturing, and, worse, it's all about the "big picture."

That really is what is at the heart of this. News people can't be bothered by "facts." They have a "story" to tell, and that story is as much about them and their self-representation as anything else. This is one of the things that makes people like Rather so completely insufferable is their belief that they stand on Olympian heights and can proclaim to us the Truth that our plebeian status prohibits us from seeing.

Pointing out factual errors in the story is, to them, at best idle sophistry, at worst sacrilege.

it was a deceptive approach, and it worked.

The "deception" lie in seizing control of the debate by directing attention away from the fundamental truth they were presenting to focus on "facts." But facts are not truth -- it is all about the "story," and in the telling of the individual stories, they must all be seen as mere strophe of the grand epic -- the struggle of the Correct People against the barbaric Lumpen hordes.

These people's narcissism knows no bounds.

That is why I agree with Charles' initial assessment -- this is not rational "CYA" on the part of a liar who got caught. This is the genuine wrath of a borderline personality confronted with an unacceptable alternative reality.

Comedian Dana Gould used to do a bit about Larry King, saying that you could always tell who didn't command respect in society because they appeared on the second half of Larry King Live (although I'd amend that to include the first half as well.) He'd go into his Larry King impersonation and say, "Tonight on Larry King Live: His family was kidnapped and killed, he was imprisoned for years in a gulag, it's Soviet dissident Alexander Solzhenitsyn! Followed by Sherri Lewis and Lambchop! Tomorrow night, he's back from the dead and in our studio to take your calls: it's Abraham Lincoln! Also, the guy who played Fleegle on The Banana Splits!"

I can understand that Rather doesn't get it but his lawyer had to look into the case. He has to know he CANNOT produce Lucy Ramirez nor the typewriter that drafted the memo.

Rather used his senior position at a major new organization and attempted to detroy the reputation of the sitting President of the US in the months immediately prior to an election and probably with the intent of influencing that election. He had a duty to accurately present his accusations with the utmost care. He had a duty to have his facts and evidence vetted to the highest standards of journalistic verification (we are not talking mount Everest here kids).

He ran the story. He stuck to the story and when his claims were investigated, his story collapsed. Completely. For his long service and in the vain hope it might minimize the damage, CBS kept him on for a while before gently dropping his ass in the alley behind Black Rock.

Rather put CBS News into a tailspin from which it has not recovered. he destroyed their reputation; the network tried to shovel as much of the mess under the rug as possible but they should be suing Rather, not the other way around.

That said CBS will have a hard time defending the case when they put such effort into proving that Rather had not completely screwed up. to win the case, CBS will have to admit their look into the matter was limited and that on further investigation, Rather's mistake was colossal perhaps intentional.

Ultimately the case turns on the Rather's report a defense of it, CBS will have to attack it head on. The evidence against Rather is overwhelming. The flashing font overlays just cannot be explained. CBS and Rather will be taking another hit on their credibility on this.

America is fucking stupid. Keep running to Dubai to make your fortunes.
Don't give a shit about the consequences. Just be as greedy as you can be
and fuck everyone else. That's basically the attitude.

Then one day your actions will have consequences... but you'll probably be oblivious
as you enjoy your yacht, spanky 20 bedroom house and every other
luxury you've ever dreamed of.

I personally know of architects and other professionals who have
run the 100 yard dash with their tongues hanging out so they could
make Sheikaholic dollars.

America has become blind. Same goes for how it runs to China to make a buck.

Rather: Wrong from the Beginning
Even in 1963, Dan Rather was a poor excuse for a newsman.

by Philip Chalk
03/14/2005

WHEN CBS ANNOUNCED THAT IT will smile through the pain of Dan Rather's dying credibility with an hour-long retirement tribute in early March, the network released an image of a young Rather posing in front of the Texas School Book Depository, looking gravely into the distance. While a little nostalgia was understandable--what, no photo of Rather huddled over a fax machine last October?--CBS still managed to remind those who knew the anchor during his salad days in Texas how tendentious and unprincipled he was even then.

Eddie Barker, for one, remembers. The news director for CBS's radio and TV affiliates in Dallas at the time of President Kennedy's November 22, 1963, assassination, Barker is widely credited with first reporting on the air that the president was dead, having received word through a doctor acquaintance directly from the hospital ER. Rather, then based in Dallas as a reporter for CBS's national news broadcast and working out of Barker's newsroom, later took credit for the scoop, Barker says. The error is repeated in historical accounts often enough to annoy the now-retired Barker, though he says the falsehood was later acknowledged by Rather.

It was a different lie--one delivered on national news, and at the expense of children--that caused Rather trouble at the time. As reporters from around the world descended on the Texas city, Rather went on the air with a local Methodist minister who made a stunning claim: Children at Dallas's University Park Elementary School had cheered when told of the president's death.
The tale was perfect for the moment, reinforcing the notion among distant media elites that Dallas was a reactionary "City of Hate." It slyly played to a local audience, too: The school named was in upper-income University Park, one of two adjacent municipal enclaves that shared a school district and a reputation for fiercely protected, lily-white privilege. Finally, for the ambitious Rather--a native Texan and then a Dallas resident--the account represented the very sort of revealing, local dirt that the throngs of out-of-town competitors would have to work far harder to get. Except that it wasn't true, and Rather knew it, Barker says.

If given the chance to be his interviewer, I'd ask the same request of Dan Rather that I'd ask of Mary Mapes: "Describe a bad journalist for me."

Reference to the Green Hornet? Somebody have "blue flame" trade marked. How about just "kept the flame burning." Green as in money?

Part 2

Approached earlier by the same minister with what was a second-hand account, Barker himself had run the story by the school's principal and some teachers, all of whom denied it outright. Because of the shooting, which took place at 12:30 p.m., the principal had decided to close the school early, though without telling the students why. The children at the school--including three of Barker's own--were merely happy to be going home early, he was told. There couldn't have been any spontaneous cheering at the news of Kennedy's murder, because no such news had been announced.
Undaunted, the dogged minister--"a very, very strong liberal and a very, very strong Kennedy supporter," Barker says--moved on to Rather.

"Rather came to me, and I said, 'My kids are in school there, and I checked it out, and there's not a darn thing to it,'" says Barker. "He said, 'Well, great--I'll just forget it.' But instead of forgetting it, he went out and did this gut job on Dallas and its conservatism," with the preacher's story at the center of his report.

With the discredited account likely to be challenged by the local affiliate's editors before being fed to New York, Rather sidestepped a customary film-editing session with Barker and arranged to file the report live instead, Barker says. "And so here's Dan with the preacher, telling this story about kids at UP cheering when told the president was dead."

Livid at being lied to, Barker laid into Rather as soon as he returned to the newsroom, expelling the reporter and all his national-news colleagues from the building on the spot. "I said 'Get the hell out of here--you and this whole damn bunch!'" he says.

Barker's local TV and radio crews scrambled to arrange on-air interviews with teachers to rebut the story, but the lie had already traveled halfway around the world and would become an enduring part of JFK assassination lore. In the meantime, CBS was threatening to pull its affiliation with the two local stations for having given Rather and his colleagues the boot.

"The next day I let him back in," Barker says. "But I wanted to make darn sure that he knew he couldn't pull that kind of crap with me."

While well-known in broadcast-news circles, the incident did nothing to slow Rather's rise; his Kennedy coverage was decisive in his eventual move up to CBS's New York headquarters. "You have to give him credit," says Barker. "He's a very aggressive guy."

Aggressive to a fault, as the ignominious end of his four-plus decades at CBS makes plain. As Barker himself--a CBS newsman for most of his career says.

One of the characteristics of the memos, which were immediately jumped on by right wing bloggers, was the appearance of superscript. This is the lower case abbreviation that often follows numerical designations like 5th or 3rd. According to the critics of the memos, superscript did not exist on IBM typewriters at the time the memos were supposedly written. Several researchers reported otherwise, however, that at least one model, the IBM Executive II was moving into the marketplace and had superscript available by using the "shift" key.

As the controversy over the Guard increased during the 2004 campaign, the White House began a series of Friday night document dumps, claiming they had discovered new material related to the president's Guard service. Although I was originally told there were only 161 pages, the final number was more than 300. The last document dump occurred about a week after Dan Rather's apologia on his former network's newscast. This was a single page memo promoting 2nd Lt. George W. Bush to 1st Lt. and it used superscript. The media took no notice that this piece of evidence completely contradicted the most powerful criticism of the Rathergate memos.

I went to the sewer to see if they had any komments on this subject but found nothing. I did see this one though:

President Ahmandinejad Wants To Go To Ground Zero, We All Should Go With Him.

We are so far off course as country and as a people right now, it's amazing anyone can tell their ass from their elbow.

Our Senators can't approve adequate dwell time for our soldiers; or stand up and end the war by de-authorizing it (hate tip Bill Richardson) but they can unite to crap on MoveOn?

Then today, there is the falling-all-over-ourselves to attack President Ahmandinejad from going to pay his respects at Ground Zero.

Outrage! The cry goes out and the lemming fall out over themselves to yell OUTRAGE every louder. Just like they did with Larry Craig, a single shot to the head won't do anymore, bring out the Uzi.

Of course, missed in this torrent of attacks, is one fact. And one practical one.

First, the fact.

Iran helped us after 9/11. They provided valuable intelligence into what the situation was in Afghanistan and about the Taliban.

They were our ALLY. A four letter word for friend.

The second reason is that letting anyone go pay their respects at Ground Zero is the right thing to do.

Castro wants to head on down, feel free.

Anyone who wants to go stare at that whole in the ground and ponder the horror that happened, feel free.

In fact, we should all go down there. Here's what I think about. I remember the smell a few days after 9/11. It is the smell of death, it's sweet, kind of sickly sweet.

I never will, and never want to, forget that smell.

Creepy.

So, if Dan, Ms Mapes, Larry King, and all of the Kings men, CBS, ABC, NBC, PBS, CNN, together with the newless papers and the mags that gag can not prove up this memo from Ms Mapes , why would they not all get together and prove up that Lt. So, here in the open a challenge to them all,

d) she's collecting pictures from the internet and "analyzing" them to "prove" her predetermined assertions... not terribly rational, (see a, above)
e) in Thailand, unfortunately, you CAN find a gunsel to kill somebody small (ie, no phalanx of bodyguards to outwit or outmaneuver) for a couple hundred dollars... shooter goes to jail, free food for a couple years... end of story.

f) another layer of weirdness is the existence of non-Thai Muslim extremists AND thug-opportunists AND murdering-meth-sellers in the south and the north... Thaksin's effective program of eliminating ALL drug pushers when caught is now trumpeted as 'human rights violations'...

My fondest memory of Dan Rather was the 2004 election night, It was about two AM in the morning. I had worked the election count with my employer, a local county government in the state of Georgia. Working an election count is interesting, we know what the local count is because we are constantly running election reports to keep the local politicians happy, but we are clueless as to what is happening nationally. I listened to the radio on the way home, and was heartened by the national news. When I got home I quickly turned on the TV and listened to the major network talking heads give their spiel. It was unbelievable. Everyone of them looked like the stuffing had been beat out of them. And good ole' Dan Rather looked like he had been run over by a Sherman tank. Dan knew his job was Dependant upon a Democrat victory, and Fox had just announced Ohio had fallen to Bush winning the 2004 elections. It was beautiful! I have never seen such glum and disheartened anchors ever. Dan was screwed with the Bush victory and knew his job was over.

Howlin, every single one of these memos to file is in a proportionally spaced font, probably Palatino or Times New Roman. In 1972 people used typewriters for this sort of thing, and typewriters used monospaced fonts...I am saying these documents are forgeries, run through a copier for 15 generations to make them look old. This should be pursued aggressively.

You're absolutely correct. I just looked at the files, and they don't pass the smell test. Most typewritten items from that era would have been in Courier font. And why would these items be copies, anyway, if these memos were for the guy's own personal file? They wouldn't have that run through the copy machine a zillion times aura to them in that case.

And to think, if only CBS hadn't put those copies online, they probably would have avoided most of this ugliness.

Rather and Mapes would have still run the fake story, and they still would have been caught and exposed eventually (the story was too high-profile for close public scrutiny not to come eventually), but it wouldn't have been nearly so fun nor spectacular, nor ghastly for them.

Rather is obsessed about an issue that, even if true ,was meaningless.
Perhaps the Guard stuff, if true, might make one reluctant to elect someone the first time, for fear he might be fearful of using the military,or something like that.
By 2004 Bush had already shown he was not afraid to pull the trigger.
Kerry was running as the soldier. I do not see how it changes anyone's mind. None of it makes any sense.
How could this guy be making millions as an anchor of a major network ?

Looks like the phrase "Little Green Flame" isn't in the rush transcript linked to above:

RATHER: I do want to make a point, Larry, here, that somebody will look at it and say he's suing for $70 million. For me, it's not about the money. It is about this principle of what we're going to do with our democracy.

Now, so if -- if the time comes that there's money as a settlement, a substantial part of that will go to such outfits as the investigative and editors, reporters, Reporters and Investigative Editors Association, The Committee To Protect Journalists, because I would like the legacy of this lawsuit to be not that I made tons of money out of it, but that we kept the little flame, the flickering flame of hard-nose investigative reporting alive.

583 Canadian Guy  Thu, Sep 20, 2007 8:32:52pm

Here's the part where Rather loses and potentially exposes himself to a lawsuit

RATHER: No. The -- most of it was written, I think, by the corporation. I don't know who, but most of it was written. I was asked to, you know, (INAUDIBLE) I can remember that in my office, the president of the news division was in fairly late working on it. But we were working together at that time because I thought that we were a team.

As it turned out, there was this effort to scapegoat myself and others in the news division. We haven't even talked about this so- called alleged independent commission that investigated it.

KING: You say that was (INAUDIBLE)...

RATHER: They spent months and they spent tens of millions of dollars...

KING: Was there a distinguished lawyer involved in that?

RATHER: A former attorney general of the United States, a good friend of the Bushes and a loyal Republican, Mr. Thornburgh, headed it. I don't have -- it's nothing personal with him. But what this was, and the lawsuit alleges -- and I think it can be shown -- this was, in many ways, a fraud. It was a setup. It was designed...

KING: A fraud?

(NOTE: EVEN LARRY KING IS SPEECHLESS HERE)

RATHER: Yes. It was designed to achieve a certain result so that the corporation would be exonerated.

KING: Are you saying Dick Thornburgh, former governor of Pennsylvania, former -- participated in a fraud?
RATHER: That's what the record shows. That's what we allege. That's what we allege.

KING: You allege in -- all right. Your lawsuit does...

RATHER: That's right. And I think the record shows that clearly. Why didn't they go -- they had tens of millions of dollars and a lot of time and they said we didn't even investigate whether the documents were true or not. Now, we now know that an investigator was hired by CBS -- what I call a mystery man -- who wasn't even mentioned in the report, had looked into it.

So what did he say?

What did he say to them?

We don't know.

Mendacity?

;-) That would be a tendency to tell untruths.

(IE I'm saying he's not crazy, he's just lying).

Look, his "fake but accurate" schtick is unchanged now from when he made it before getting canned four years ago. If he's crazy now, he was crazy then.

"... his "fake but accurate" shtick... "

That REALLY floored me, LC.

I thought for a moment that maybe he was quoting someone else or alluding to it in the past tense.

Then he went on and on like it was fact or something.

Too bizarre for words at that point.

Well I missed the live airing of Rather's blather, so I'm watching Larry re-run right now.

It will be fun to watch and follow along after reading a number of the comments here.

A long time ago I used to respect this guy a lot. Then the Internet started influencing my information gathering abilities. Edward R. Murrow would kick Dan in the nads if he were alive today.

Charles, there's just one thing I want to say:

YOU

KICK

EVERYONE'S

ASS.

Ah, also... I want to have your baby. But not, you know, in a gay way, or anything.

What I mean to say is this; six and a half years ago, you were... some guy. A jazz musician, a graphic designer, with a blog as a hobby. Soft left/liberal... just like I was at the time. And Dan Rather.. well, shit, he was a household name, an elder statesmen of the American press corps.

And here we are, in 2007. Charles Johnson... this guy, who, well, is just some guy... is INSTRUMENTAL in exposing Rather as the goddamn LIAR AND FRAUD that he is. This supposed paragon of journalism tried to influence a U.S. presidential election by peddling a load of obvious BULLSHIT, that any intelligent 13 year-old should have seen through. And yet, most of the media was willing to go along with it. But you, PowerLine, and a few others... not you guys. You saw through it, and got the word out, and got this creep CANNED.

And one doesn't have to be a fawning fanboy of Bush to see that what Rather and CBS were trying to do was WRONG. And Lord (or something) knows that you and I don't agree on everything, and hell, you're still at odds with a bunch of friends of mine who are ex-LGFers (and I hope that rift is healed someday soon), and in a conversation on certain aspects of politics you and I would probably end up shouting at each other (before cracking open a couple of beers).

But I repeat.

YOU

KICK

EVERYONE'S

ASS

Good night to all.

Mr. EtNorskTroll,

I know it may sound cruel but we have a saying in the Corps; 'payback is a bitch' and it fits our friend Dan!

Sometimes people do things that are unforgivable, at least that is unforgivable by anyone that is not a saint and actual saints are few and far between. Most Marines won't have much 'truck' with Dan Rather; at least not Vietnam Marines.

Yours truly,

re: #611 BillLangston

Got THAT straight, Bill! North Vietnam was reeling from losses, right on the verge of throwing in the towel and suing for peace, when Dan Rather led the charge to vilify America and de-legitimize the war in VietNam...

resulting in the exodus (and deaths) of tens of thousands of Boat People; the maiming and deaths of tens of thousands of (used-to-be South) Vietnamese in communist re-education camps in the south...

and the spitting-on and other vilification of 'Nam veterans after America's ignominious retreat!

Thanks, Dan Rather!

According to R.E.M. (Monster, 1994), the next words from the questioner are "are your benzedrine... oh, oh?'

Is it possble "Kenneth" a.k.a. Rather's senility led him to give the wrong frequency last night before the Larry King show and the delivery was benzODIAZAPINE by mistake?

Consider the possible impact this may have had upon Mr. Rather's performance.

Being optimistic, I would like to say both Jimmy and Dan are senile. Unfortunately they seem to have gone senile when they were about 40 years ago. 20 year old senile people became elderly buffoons. If this were a sudden change in character, I would give it a pass and keep my mouth shut. But these two have been breaking the furniture and spilling beer on the floor for years. They deserve no special handling.

What's a verb between Lizards, anyway?

I know I'm coming in very late, but I want to claim the verb Pelosing. As in "She totally pelosed, guys".

Pelosing -- through brain damage, senility, botox or an excess of multi-culti socialist ideology -- achieving the abysmal dumbness that allows you to cross yourself in a mosque. In front of cameras.

Jonah G. Says:

But we also need this because Rather's "I'm mad as hell and I'm not going to take it anymore" routine will help us get to the bottom of a story that was actually under-covered. CBS News, under Rather's direction, ran with fake documents - or, to be fair, documents so shoddily verified that no unbiased journalist would have run with them. When confronted with the rank incompetence and bad faith of the team he led (the lead producer tried to coordinate with the Kerry campaign), Rather first allowed three of his colleagues to be thrown under the bus, while he took a few more face-saving laps around CBS before he was quietly escorted out the door like the muttering office old-timer who's gone off his feed.

ENT:
Why should you care whether anyone here thinks you're a bad person? There's lots of people here with lots of viewpoints...there's even Gordon. The only way not to be a bad person in somebody's eyes is to not post. So don't worry about it, post what you want and expect what you want. If someone here can prove you wrong with facts, they'll let you know. If no one has to straighten you out, you're OK.

As to your #535 post, I see no reason to take back the ill feeling and derogatory remarks I've made about Mr. Rather in the past. HDrepub's link from the Weekly Standard proves the man has dealt in fraud for over 40 years. He deceived many, including myself, my family and Mandy's Mom.

For years I respected him and many wrong opinions I held were based on what I heard from him at CBS news. The chickens have finally come home to roost. He made his bed with deceit, now he has to sleep in it. I agree, it's an unattractive spectacle, but it needs to be if it's to dissuade others from taking the same path.

I can honestly say with a great deal of certainty the answer is yes. Odds are, in someone else's eyes, you are a bad person. But, as Smilin Jack alluded to, what does it matter what someone else thinks? What you think/feel about yourself is more important.
If others not living up to your expectations makes a difference to you, then I would feel sorry...for you.

~Norsk Troll

I don't pass judgment as to if you are a "bad person" or not--I only care if you are an honest person or not, expressing your views and not trying to live up to the last syllable of your moniker. :)

I understand the desire to not pick on the mentally handicapped; it is human compassion and generally a good and kind trait. However, I will point out that in this case, the person in question is far from a harmless, sick individual. Dan Rather is still trying to convince people of an outright lie--not a mistake, but a calculated assault on the truth.

The nice thing about LGF has always been that despite all the differences of the folks who post here, the predominant thread through the comments(and our gracious host's posts) is a commitment to the truth--to fact checking the MSM, to shining light on the darker and less publicized aspects of the ROP and its adherents, to catching our elected officials and bureaucrats deliberately lying (not just making mistakes) and in general to honestly sharing what we know, see, and propose is true. This is not a "Take Action NOW!" cause-of-the-day site; although some causes have been reported. There are no talking points that must be reviewed and echoed daily, nor are we required to offer allegiance to our Lizardoid Master (except in the most humorous of ways). Respect for the truth is all that we seem to desire.

Dan Rather has a long history of perverting the truth for his "stories", and Rathergate is the most heinous of his actions. It is an affront to common sense and justice that cannot be left unanswered, regardless of the apparent mental condition of Rather. It's not piling on when we are correcting a dangerous fraud; it is merely pointing out the necessity of being vigilant. Basically, he had (and has) the power to spread his lies and obfuscation, and until sites like LGF, he could do it virtually unopposed. It is our privilege to finally say "Enough lies!" and be heard.

If Dan were a poster here, his constant reiteration of the lie and obtuse defenses would most likely be considered the actions of a troll. I would bet that his inability to accept the truth and his vitriol directed at those who challenge him would result in his being banned. As it is, by appearing on national TV, he is essentially trolling us all.

And in that case, all I could say would be "Good riddance, Dan. Seek professional help. GAZE."
