New York Times Having Lunch with Ahmadinejad (Update: It Was a Joke)

Fri, Sep 21, 2007 at 8:29:53 am PDT

They would never treat President Bush with this kind of deference, but the New York Times editorial board is going to host Ahmadinejad for lunch.

UPDATE at 9/21/07 8:44:48 am:

This may be a joke, that’s been erroneously reported as fact. Stay tuned.

UPDATE at 9/21/07 9:21:56 am:

Allahpundit has confirmed that it was a joke, by Laura Ingraham, reported wrongly as fact by Newt Gingrich.

OT - More cartoon riots, this time in Bangladesh: Violence over Bangladesh cartoon

Islam is Bangladesh's state religion and past governments have banned publications for insulting Muslim

The country's religious traditions are moderate but some people believe conservatives are becoming more influential.

Witnesses say the violence began after Friday prayers, when protesters tried to break through barricades put up to prevent them reaching the Prothom Alo offices.

The demonstrators demanded the execution of the paper's editor, Matiur Rahman, and burned effigies of him and his Bengali-language daily.

The cartoon featured a conversation between a mullah and a child and ended with a joke about the Prophet Mohammed's name.

It appeared in Prothom Alo's weekly satirical magazine, Alpin.

The cartoonist, Arifur Rahman, has been jailed for a month after the government said his drawings had insulted Muslims

18 lawhawk  Fri, Sep 21, 2007 8:34:47am

They've apparently never met a dictator they didn't like.

There is one caveat to the general rule. I'd actually pay the NYT to do a sit down lunch with Fidel Castro at their brand new office building in Manhattan - if only to prove that he's dead or alive.

We know that Ahmadinejad is alive, and that he's a menace to the region. That he's anti-Bush is all it takes for a sitdown with the NYT editorial staff.

Considering that the NYT has already become a mouthpiece for Hamas and Hizbullah shills, this is just cutting out the middlemen.

Newt Gingrich revealed on FoxNews this morning that the New York Times editorial board will host Ahmadinejad for lunch at the Four Seasons hotel on Monday. "That is like hosting Adolf Hitler to lunch in 1940," said Dave Bossie of Citizens United.

Ahmadinejads visit has proven beyond all doubt how dilusional the left is. They eat up everything he says as truth...forget about what he says to his own people in his own country (death to israel and america)
they clearly believe those are lies
but when he is speaking to "the great satan" his words are truth
like the wreath
forget that they kill americans
he wants to lay a wreath and make it all better! ohhh happy day

the left needs to just cede themselves to the Islamists...pack em up, move em to Tehran and theyll just LOVE it there I know it

The times has outlived it's usefulness. Once they were a great Newspaper. They have gone beyond left wing partisan politics, and delved into a strange new world of treason. I would hope that someone there would see this and refuse to participate, but under the guise of getting a scoop, they wont.

Journalism is all about getting the drop on a story before the next guy does, but this goes beyond the pale.

insanity police,

NYTIMES: Treason, Treason and more Treason.

Fortunately Tennyson was right. Treason doth not prosper.

NYT shares are modestly higher in today's trading, but the stock's long-term trend is definitely toward the southeast. The stock has been spiraling lower for more than 3 years, losing about 60% of its value since early 2004, when it failed (after many tries) to overcome chart resistance at the 50 level. In yesterday's trading, the stock tagged a new 52-week low.

Short sellers have taken an interest in the stock, resulting in a short-interest ratio of 13.7 days to cover. Additionally, almost 17% of the equity's available float has been sold short. But with price action continuing to sag, it's unlikely that the bears will collectively beat a hasty retreat to the exits.

Ahmadinejad met with the Council on Foreign Relations in NYC when he visited last year.

The CFRs thought he was pretty crazy, but they passed it off as naivete.
[Link: www.cfr.org...]

The invitation was made by Gary Sick, the last Americans Ambassador to Iran. Ahmadinejad took questions from Brent Scowcroft, Fareed Zakaria, and Richard Haas. Scowcroft and Haas are routinely appointed to high positions of influence in the US foreign service.

60 Ayatollah Ghilmeini  Fri, Sep 21, 2007 8:44:08am

Oh good the NYT and the psycho can braid the hairs of their buttocks together and walk down Times Square like a PushMePullYou.

Meanwhile, President Mahmoud Ahmadinejad is making it increasingly difficult for the West to delude itself that a nuclear Iran would be anything other than a globally threatening force for destabilization. Last month, the Iranian state news agency quoted him boasting that he would place Iran's nuclear technology - hitherto depicted by his regime as peaceful in nature and purpose - "at the service of those who are determined to confront the bullying powers and aggressors."

Mr: Bush said the most dangerous weapons must not fall into the hands of the terrorists. So something has to give.

re: #73 Occasional Reader
I'm a little too patient with some of my family on the phone but I always hold the best cards for last. I usually get the "I'm going to stop talking about this before I start to hate you!" speech. I do admit I was a bit taken back and I stumbled before I could retort but I was just calling her to ask her about her birthday and how was her weekend. But I do keep them in check when they go over the line.

re: #75 buzzsawmonkey

I'll get the whole "Well, we shouldn't be there..." speech. Usually, I get the hairy eyeball when I undercut their arguments but I prefer to these things in person rather than over the phone. I'll be back in Michigan next week to visit the family, I prefer subtlety and influencing them to discover the truth before resorting to the sledgehammer of facts.

102 Occasional Reader  Fri, Sep 21, 2007 9:00:36am
This may be a joke, that’s been erroneously reported as fact.

Which would make it remarkably similar to much NYT reporting.

Chocolate-covered camel nuts for dessert?

NYTIMES: Treason, Treason and more Treason.

With a dash of sedition, along with a pinch of anti-american propaganda...Wonder what the Washington Post and the L A Times are going to do for Dinner Jacket, so they won't be upstaged!

111 arizona9  Fri, Sep 21, 2007 9:07:53am

From the Huffinpo...

Kristen Brietweiser is annoyed. Not that Ahmadinejad might visit ground zero but by those that are outraged by the thought...

'By the third call before 9 a.m. I was fairly irritated. Mostly because the only news show that has made any real effort to get the American people to better understand Iran is The Today Show, which sent Matt Lauer to Tehran last week. (Incidentally, we should all commend Today Show producers for that effort -- this was the best morning television programming that I have seen in years, largely because it was not about "reprogramming" Americans for yet another war.)

So, no, I wasn't angry that Ahmandinejad wanted to visit Ground Zero. I was angry, however, at the "pack mentality" of our leading journalists. I was also dismayed -- but not surprised -- at the similar mentality of our current crop of political officials and presidential candidates, several of whom provided the same predictable, politically-correct sound-bite: "We are OUTRAGED!"

What I would have preferred was some real statesmanship.

Real statesmanship would be a presidential candidate with the courage to encourage potentially dangerous, misinformed leaders like Ahmandinejad to visit Ground Zero, in the hopes that they might learn something.

Dinner Jackets visit should be restricted to getting into the limo at the airport, the motorcade to the UN, do his propaganda rant, back into the limo to the airport, where F-16's will escort his aircraft out of U S Airspace.

From your HuffPo quote:

Real statesmanship would be a presidential candidate with the courage to encourage potentially dangerous, misinformed leaders like Ahmandinejad to visit Ground Zero, in the hopes that they might learn something.

Right, because the meaning of Ground Zero is so terribly nuanced. A great big hole representing three thousand murders... could be that Mahmoud just needs some help figuring out the significance.

123 realwest  Fri, Sep 21, 2007 9:24:02am

Oh horse shit. If this story's true, then I hope one of the editors has the balls to ask dinnerjacket why he should expect to have diplomatic privileges extended to him, when he was part of the group responsible for taking over our embassy and holding our diplomats and staff hostage for 444 days, back in 1979.
I don't think there's a Statute of Limitations on that.
I KNOW there's no Statute of Limitations on ANGER.

I have to tell you that I didn't believe it. It's Ramadan! I could believe that the NYT would surely invite him, being the dolts that they are, but I would think that it would be an insult to a Muslim (especially such a high profile Muslim) to do so (come sin with me noonish). Surely people like the NYT have some protocol experts on call?

None of the Muslims I knew in college observed Ramadan, but if they had to go home during that month, they knew they'd have to while there.

I'd like to invite Mr. A to come with me to the Viva la Bands concert that evening. I have an extra ticket - don't stand up front (GWAR is on the bill). :)

Science Editors don't have to have a degree in science- they are just writer/editors. It is good if you can find a scientist who can write but it just doesn't work most of the time.

I hope any disgruntled stock holders in the New York Times note the time and location of the luncheon. Four Seasons hotel on Monday.

I believe the luncheon is being held at Nathan's in Coney Island. Hot dogs (with deli mustard and sauerkraut) and potato knishes. Wow, who could ask for anything more?

151 Dairenn  Fri, Sep 21, 2007 1:42:53pm

I listen to Laura's morning program and it's alright; when it comes to political and defense issues, she's great. But she's freaking awful at telling jokes. Her deadpan style is so terrible that a smart guy like Newt thought she was being for real.
