Perrin Responds to 'Death Threat' Challenge: 'Uh, I Forgot'

Wed, Oct 31, 2007 at 8:42:36 am PDT

Dennis Perrin, who posted an irresponsible, libelous accusation at Huffington Post that an LGF reader threatened to “track down his IP address and kill him,” has posted a typically insult-laden response to my challenge to prove his allegation: Dennis Perrin: Life Is A Beautiful, Precious Flower.

Long story short: he can’t prove it. He “doesn’t remember” his username, or in which thread the “threat” supposedly appeared. In other words, he made it all up.

Dennis Perrin is a liar.

How incredibly lame, Dennis. Now you should do the responsible thing and retract your article at Huffington Post. (I know you won’t.)

It’s been brought to my attention that Charles Johnson, the Mud King of the Widdle Gween Nerfball tribe, is upset with my contention that I received a death threat at his fine site many years ago. “Man up,” ChazJo growled, beating his chest as his followers grunted their approval. “Prove it, or retract it.”

I’ve also received several emails from what I suspect are Nerfballers, daring me to do the same thing. So, in the interest of full clarity, and because I want to get back to some actual work, here’s the deal.

There was never a death threat made against “Dennis Perrin.” This is because “Dennis Perrin” didn’t use his real name when commenting at ChazJo’s joint. “Dennis Perrin” used a single, anonymous tag — a rare practice online, I’ll concede, but what the hell, you only live once. What that tag was I have no idea, since I posted there maybe five years ago, two computers and three hard drives in the past.

I knew very little about that site’s politics at the time, as I was relatively new to the Web, so I thought I could argue from a different perspective in good faith. Umm, right. My biggest mistake was insisting that the Palestinians are human, which is science fiction to Chazzy’s tribe. Several commenters told me to leave, and one said that if I didn’t, he’d track my IP address and “hunt” me down, encouraged by a few others. Now, whether this was possible or not, I don’t know, but as I said in my earlier post, I figured, f*ck it, and moved on.

Perrin’s accusation is even more ludicrous, because it’s impossible for an LGF commenter to find out another commenter’s IP address.

The whole thing is nothing but a sleazy leftist smear.

That is beyond lame. He's using his purported ignorance of the workings of the web and wide-eyed innocense of politically-charged forum banter to perpetuate a smeer that has no way of being proven false. He has conveniently "forgot" the key information that would allow Charles to track his claims down, and also moved it far back in time in hopes that would help his case. So if this all happened five years ago, what makes it pertinent today? Why has he never mentioned this before? Oh, because it's a lie, that's why. Never mind.

The dog ate his homework. I doubt that he'd forget a username he'd used since most people tend to use the same one (or a variation of the same) to remember passwords and the like. Maybe that's a way to figure out if he ever did post here, let alone got a death threat from someone here. That is, unless he's prone to sockpuppetry and uses a whole bunch of names to avoid being detected.

Either way, it's up to him to prove his allegations, not the other way around.

So far - absolutely no proof. Nada. Zilch. Simply a say-so that it happened.

Things that make Malaysian men lie awake at night and go, "Oh my!":

Cleric: Women's Sexy Clothing Distracting Muslim Men From Sleep, Prayers

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia — Malaysia's Muslim men are suffering sleepless nights and cannot pray properly because their thoughts are distracted by a growing number of women who wear sexy clothes in public, a prominent cleric said.

Nik Abdul Aziz Nik Mat, the spiritual leader of the opposition Pan-Malaysian Islamic Party, said he wanted to speak about the "emotional abuse" that men face because it is seldom discussed, the party reported on its Web site Wednesday.

"We always [hear about] the abuse of children and wives in households, which is easily perceived by the eye, but the emotional abuse of men cannot be seen," Nik Abdul Aziz said. "Our prayers become unfocused and our sleep is often disturbed."

Nik Abdul Aziz has made controversial comments about women in the past, including that women should stop wearing lipstick and perfume to lower the risk of being raped. Women's groups have slammed his statements, saying Islam teaches both men and women to be responsible for modesty. They say comments like these encourage rapes because it puts the onus on women...

"Dennis Perrin" used a single, anonymous tag -- a rare practice online, I'll concede, but what the hell, you only live once.

It is so rare, SUCH a rare practice I tell you? How rare?

Rarer than the ability of liberals to engage in civil discourse!

Rarer than the ability to say "I made it up...sorry".

Rarer than...well...you figure it out...

Yet another case of the someone trying to criminalize the conservatives.... all out of fear that someone might accidently in some way possibly listen to us.

I mean, then there might be thinking involved... which runs REALLY counter-culture to the left.

Remember, the left is WHOLLY open-minded... unless you disagree with them in some way.

To them, 'open-mindedness' is which prison they want to see President Bush in for his 'illegal war'

Meanwhile in the real world, restive Muslims in Thailand are at it again; killing Buddhists as well as other Muslims - Bar bombs kill one, wound 4 in Thai Muslim south

A spate of small bombs have hit nine karaoke bars and restaurants frequented by Buddhist civil servants in Thailand's rebellious Muslim south, killing one and wounding four, police said on Wednesday.

Five shot dead in south Thailand

SUSPECTED Islamic rebels shot dead five people in separate attacks in Thailand's restive south, as the country's new army chief began a two-day visit to the troubled region.

A string of shootings late Monday underlined the near-daily violence in the Muslim-majority south where more than 2600 people have been killed in a separatist insurgency since January 2004.

A Muslim couple in their 20s was gunned down by militants in their house in Yala, one of three violence-plagued provinces bordering Malaysia, police said.

In nearby Pattani province, a 35 year-old Muslim religious teacher was killed in a drive-by shooting, while two Muslim workers were shot dead in neighboring Narathiwat province.

Police added a 32-year-old Buddhist woman and her teenage daughter were wounded in a drive-by shooting on Tuesday in Yala.

Kids at the 257-pupil primary have also been told to don ethnic garb even though most are Christians.

What that tag was I have no idea, since I posted there maybe five years ago, two computers and three hard drives in the past.

OK, taking this weasel at his word, despite this premature onset of Alzheimer's disease, its still ought to be possible to track down exactly which thread it was, and what remarks were made in response to his post(s).

All we need is a time frame. Doesn't even have to be an exact day or week, just a year and/or season should be enough to track down his username, and the posts in question. The magic of computerized searching makes this relatively straightforward.

Other "pesky" clues that might help are the internet email address used to establish the account (or a reasonable facsimile thereof), subject of the thread in question (or some other content discussed in the thread).

If Perrin is still asserting that his death threat story is true, he should be HAPPY to help out and prove his story correct, right? And it would be EASY for him to do this, too.

Something tells me he's not likely to cooperate further, though perhaps a subpoena might help jog his memory a little bit.

OK, no registration until after Rathergate.

Funny. . .I had stumbled onto LGF a few times before Rathergate, but didn't start lurking until it happened. Don't think I registered or made my first post for several more months.

But even so, it should *STILL* be possible to locate the post(s) in question (assuming they existed. . .which obviously they don't). Again all we'd need is a date range. Subject of the thread would help as well, but probably isn't necessary.

I bet Charles could come up with a script to search all the posts in the date range in question, and screen them to come up with a short list of one-time posters, (and even screen them again to limit to posts on threads on Palestinians).

Assuming demented-name-caller would recognize his own nick (or words), or the death threats in question, he should then have no problem picking out his post(s) from the list.

The point is, despite the alleged memory gaps, Perrins assertion about death threats is still provable or disprovable in an absolute sense.

IMO, you shouldn't let this drop.

I don't know what the legal costs involved here are (and maybe he'll end up paying them) but I think you ought to make an example of him. As you well know, death threats are not a trivial matter.

Since Perrin refuses to do the honorable thing, lets see him defend his statement in a court of law.

As mentioned above, I think it would actually be trivial for you to absolutely prove (ie beyond any doubt) that his statements are false. And he's going on nothing but a story that on its face is highly implausible.

Perrin may be a worm, but he posted on a website that has hosts and advertisers, and the ones standing behind him might not want to support this sort of sleaze.

Dennis Perrin is a complete ass.

211 ovoid  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 9:50:48am

This is what Perrin said first:
"At Little Green Footballs, several commenters bluntly advised me to leave the site, or they would track me down via my IP address and kill me."

But now, his depiction of the role of 'several commentators' has changed; they are no longer purveyors of death threats, but a cheering section:

"Several commenters told me to leave, and one said that if I didn't, he'd track my IP address and "hunt" me down, encouraged by a few others."

And the blunt death threat 'leave or be killed'? A threat to be hunted down by IP address could be anything from "we'll find out your sockpuppet names" to "we will kill you."

I wouldn't be dismissive of a threat to hunt me down. But look how Perrin manages to have his cake and eat it. Now the threat can be a death threat, without it being explicit:

"When someone says they're gonna hunt you down, I don't picture them arriving at your door with a gift basket and a warm smile. So, yes, I took that as a death threat. Again, how serious it was, I haven't the faintest, and at this late date, I really don't care."

Perrin is backpedaling. A death threat from multiple parties has morphed into a some-kind-of-threat-maybe-not-serious from one person.

He's twisted words quite a bit to get here, this place of unimpeachibility.

He sounds like a kid going through round two of a story that hasn't quite convinced mommy.

213 Leauki  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 9:51:32am

"My biggest mistake was insisting that the Palestinians are human"

Let's try that out:

I, Andrew Brehm, also insist that the Palestinians are human.

Plus, since I abhore racism, I also insist that everyone, Jewish or not, in Palestine is a "Palestinian", and that those who exclude Jews are just as racist as Hitler was when he decided that a German is only German when he is not Jewish.

A Atlanta-born Jewish immigrant to Palestine is just as "Palestinian" as a Cairo-born Arab immigrant to Palestine.

Let's see if anybody here has a problem with my opinion that Palestinians (and I include Arab Palestinians) are human.

I find it funny that "Dennis" remembers what he said (although I would put it to him that he does not), but not as whom he said it.

Perhaps more interesting is why "Dennis" would think that he would have to say that "Palestinians are human". Maybe he needed to confirm it for himself?

I would also ask "Dennis" whether he thinks that Jews (Palestinian such or otherwise) are also "human" XOR whether it is OK for Arab nationalists and Islamists to try to kill them all and destroy their state. I would also like to know whether he thinks that Jews alone, for some reason, do not have the right to defend themselves against attacks, or whether he can point out a single instance of Jewish or Israeli violence that was not to prevent or in reaction to an attack.

I would also like to know whether he believes that Israel would show any aggression whatsoever if its neighbours would not try to destroy her.

And finally I would, if he believes that Israel and not the Arab states and terrorists is the problem, propose the following bet:

Walk around in an Arab country with a t-shirt proclaiming your support for Israel.

I will in exchange walk around Tel-Aviv with a t-shirt proclaiming my support for "Palestine".

He who survives longer will have proven which side it to blame for the hatred.

If "Dennis" genuinely believes that the Israelis are the problem, he should be less afraid of provoking the Arabs than I am of provoking the Jews in Israel.

(I have offered this bet to many who claimed that Israel, not Arab hatred for Jews and Israel is the problem. NOBODY ever took me up on it. Every single liberal silently does not believe their own propaganda. Isn't that neat?)

P.S.: I have heard of a guy who received a death threat from a liberal once. The guy doesn't remember what name he used to post but an unidentified liberal threatened to kill him because the guy said that "Jews are human". Looks like a stupid, baseless accusation? Looks like it doesn't belong here? Perhaps. And I apologise for telling the story. I made it up. Wish that Huffington had similar standards.

Prof. Johnson writes: Perrin’s accusation is even more ludicrous, because it’s impossible for an LGF commenter to find out another commenter’s IP address.

Perish the thought that I'm defending Mr. Perrin, but I'm struck by the faulty syllogism: Just because you can't know a commentator's IP address, it doesn't necessarily follow that you can't threaten to find it out and hunt him down. I mean, just because I can't possibly know your home address, that doesn't preclude me from threatening to find out your home address, show up with a sawed-off shotgun, and ... well, you can figure out the rest. (I believe this is what is known as "blowing smoke.')

As for the commentators saying, in effect, "If I'd received a death threat, I sure as hell would remember it and try to find out who sent it ..." I recall the first time on a Usenet threat how someone wished aloud that I were dead. Technically, it wasn't a threat - this person didn't say he wanted to make me dead - but it was pretty sobering. And, of course, a stupid, vicious, insignificant lie, nothing worth calling the FBI about.

246 Curly  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 10:45:48am

Perrin's paranoia seems to be of the garden-variety particular to progressives. It is a badge of distinction in that tribe to be thought sinister and dangerous by the establishment. After all, if you are being threatened somebody must be paying attention. I am certain that the threat is as real as any of his other delusions.

re: #245 MrBuddwing

1.) PFFT.

2.) I'm going to saddle up my unicorn, contact the Wonder Twin and have them use their wonder twin powers to push you into a pool of water!

is that a threat? Or, because of the total lack of ability to make GOOD on such a thing, is it not a threat?

3.) Perrin still have to PROVE that it happend. Your entire comment is based on the idea that someone did as he suggested they did. Yet, even HE is unwilling to back himself up.

4.) Come on by my house and try. I live in Oklahoma and am allowed to shoot intruders.

253 Mr. Beamish  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 10:58:04am
What that tag was I have no idea, since I posted there maybe five years ago, two computers and three hard driveswith up to seven sock puppet accounts in the past.to plant phony comments.

fixed.

254 LanceKates  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 11:01:13am

re: #253 Mr. Beamish

that's still assuming that they're just not lying.

I still hold that they are, until they link to the comment.

If they are making the accusation, they have to provide proof.

If they don't have to, then I make this accusation:

Al Gore and Hillary Clinton, on many seperate occasions, attempted to steal my sole for their satanist cult worship acts.

When Perrin proves his, I'll prove mine.

255 Arbalest  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 11:04:00am

I notice that Dennis Perrin published his response on his blog, rather than at the Huffington Post.

Why?

The Huffington Post regularly publishes stuff this limp, but it's usually more articulate, although not necessarily erudite.

Perhaps Dennis Perrin had a Jonah Jameson session with an editor (re: "Beauchampian Style and Liability") and rather than man-up and admit the truth, decided that retreating to the tree of a blog would at least allow him to respond.

Dude, at some point you need come clean, one way or another; the nozzle on the garden hose can still put plenty o' water up in to your blog tree. Admitting the truth is far less painful than the literary equivalent of falling out of a wet, slippery tree. Ask Franklin Foer and Peter Scoblic.

257 MrBuddwing  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 11:11:56am

My point was, Prof. Johnson was saying it was impossible for someone to threaten Perrin the way it allegedly happened. My point was, it's entirely possible. Whether it actually happened or not is a separate issue.

And I agree with you: Just because it's impossible to make good on a threat, doesn't mean it's not a threat. So maybe (MAYBE) Perrin was threatened exactly the way he said he was. Maybe.

258 kham  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 11:12:16am

So why is it incumbent on the LGF community to track down this alleged posting of his. I’m sure he has a cadre of web-experts that can help him search the archives to retrieve the post in question (since he’s obviously incapable of doing so himself). Of course this is all contingent on many factors like whether he is interested in the truth, or if he’s actually telling the truth.

259 Athos  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 11:16:18am
The whole thing is nothing but a sleazy leftist smear.

From a site that lacks credibility and from a person who is nothing but a liar with only the weakest possible 'explanation' of not remembering the nic from years ago. Could it also be that he is mistaken about the threat? Nah - that will never come into the equation because it does not compute of what he wants to believe or project as opposed to what is.

One thing amazing about the blogosphere - when one wants to really step in it - one can do so right up to their eyeballs - with plenty of other eyeballs watching the squirming and flopping around as they foist themselves on their own petard.

It's one thing to get one's 15 minutes of fame - it's another to destroy one's repuation at the same time.

Yes, it is a mental disorder.

That's the typical dishonesy dodge - prove the negative. This pinhead doesn't want to accept that the burden of proof is his. He made the claim - support it with facts as opposed to the whinge that it happened years ago to a forgotten nic.

Man up, show you have a pair and provide the factual evidence to support your claim and innuendo Dennis. It's clear you didn't do it when it happened - so what's changed now besides a deeper psychosis of BDS or one of it's adjunct afflications?

I think you missed the point. Our legal system is based upon factual evidence, not maybe's; one can't make accusations without hard evidence to back it up. The left has totally ignored this idea by following the axiom: repeat a lie often enough and it becomes the truth (or something like that).

The burden of proof is on the accuser, not the accused. If he didn't print out the comment, know which thread it was on, the day of the month and year - I consider him to be lying.

Using the feeble "I don't remember, I don't recall" is for cowards.

re: #257 MrBuddwing

you are, first, still assuming that it happened. He has provided no proof. When asked to he can't. Without proof, it didn't happen. That's how it works. You can't make an outlandish claim and still claim it is true despite not having proof.

Didn't work for Dan Rather, doesn't work for Perrin. Stop arguing from the viewpoint of "he may have felt threatened." as it starts from the point of "it happened, but was it a threat?"

Until he shows the link, it didn't happen. Sorry.

And, why are you referring to Charles as "Prof." ?

And, we all agree that Palestinians are human. Only humans would paint&dress up little girls as brides, and have them dance provocatively before adult grooms.

268 Big Steve  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 11:52:42am

Lets go a little deeper here. The first time I posted to this site a month ago or so, I suggested that some manners might be appropriate. This unleashed a crescendo of criticism and some of it rough (I remember one of the emeritus posters suggesting a 2x4 to my head.)

However, rather than waddling off all hurt, it just realized the game a foot and also decided it was even more fun and educational to stay and sort of get down with the linemen in the trenches. I am glad I did and I have continued to learn from LGF.

Even five years ago anyone thinking that you were actually at physical risk from Blog comments reveals either extreme weakness of mind or spirit. To be honest, I am hardly afraid of people I imagine hunkered down over a PC in their cube one eye on work and one eye on the latest comment trail hoping the boss doesn't spot them. Hell the mailman can barely find my house one time out of ten so I can't imagine anyone else IF they could find my IP address and IF it didn't happen to be my work in a large tower in a big city actually finding me. And if so my wife usually answers the door and she can kick anyone's ass.

269 MrBuddwing  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 11:54:54am

Charles Johnson: I don't doubt it's impossible for one LGFer to find out another's IP address. I don't doubt that one can make an empty threat to do so.

LanceKates: You're assuming that I'm assuming that it happened. I don't. And unless my reading skills are as faulty as Charles Johnson maintains, I was under the impression he's a university professor, like Ann Althouse.

270 LanceKates  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 11:58:12am

your language... about how even an empty threat can be taken seriously is BASED on the idea that such a threat was issued.

Until Perrin provides a link and PROVES such a threat, it didn't happen and he is lying.

271 Shiplord Kirel  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 11:59:37am

I didn't realize until recently just how widely feared and hated LGF is among the cultural elite. This site has only a fraction of the traffic of corporate subsidized leftist sites like Daily Kos, but a remarkable number of movers and shakers in the lefty media world are moved to denounce us in bitter; indeed, reckless, terms.
I suspect this has to do with who some of the lizardoids are in real life, but only Charles knows for sure.

Leftists LOVE to claim they've been "silenced" or "threatened" (particularly with DEATH) because it plays into their need to be "heroic".

That's why its never good enough to merely "improve" the environment, poor children's lives or the lot of the whales its always got to be;

"SAVE" this, that or the other thing.

Leftists are desperate to be considered HEROIC so everything they propose must be a struggle to the death because what they want IS MORE IMPORTANT than anything else anyone can imagine.

Most of the rest of us view true heroism as putting your life on the line, as in doing something truly dangerous....like being in the military. But, conveniently, they universally abhor all things military so they CANNOT actually, ever, truly risk their lives for others.

They are cowards. They want the acclaim of heroism without the risk. They are supreme rhetorical warriors worthy of all the respect we give those who merely talk a good game.

I don't think they think they're cuddly. Like most else out of their mouths, it's part of the Big Lie. They are trying to use one enemy (jihadists) against another enemy (non-Marxists, us). I'll have to dig around in my notes, but I think there was a big discussion about this tactic here, recently....hmmm.

297 EE  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 4:49:05pm

Dennis Perrin is so used to lying that he has forgotten how to tell the truth. First he makes up a cockamamie story that could not possibly be true because commenters on LGF do not have access to IP addresses. Then he makes up another ridiculous story about how he forgot all of the essential facts in this [lie], so he cannot provide any supporting information. Quoth the liar: "Trust me".

That experience must have been "seared, SEARED" in his memory.

299 swamprat  Wed, Oct 31, 2007 5:59:22pm

This event did in fact occur. Dennis and I were hunting spotted owls at the time ( he claimed that they tasted like chicken, only not as flavorful. He said he got a thrill from killing an endangered specie). Anyway, as we trespassing on this orphanage's property we crossed this small road and came upon a pickup truck that had broken down. This truck was chock full of very thick coats and jackets. We had no wood, so we took as many of them as we could, went way back in the woods and started a fire. while we sat around, warming ourselves, Dennis told me about a combo chop-shop/ car-stealing ring he was running. Dennis mentioned the threat at that time, and added that he was concerned because even though he doubted anything would come of it, an investigation might uncover the fact he was stealing medicine from a sick relative, and using it to get high. Anyway, it turns out that one of the spotted owls wasn't dead, and that's when the fire started and we had to leave. Some of the orphanage was left standing, and heck, a lot of people actually like to spend the winter in a tent. So, you see, I can vouch for Dennis....Well actually this didn't happen to me; I was told this story by a guy at the bus stop, who was asking for a cigarette. But I believe him, I mean, why would he lie?

And an excellent point, too. Perrin is suppose to be a writer...but he's lacking. Yours, I read twice because it entertained me, and it made the point.

In the first piece, it sounded like he was trying to be serious, but lacked any facts to back up his assertions. Maybe that worked at one time, but to use work like that at LGF(think Dan Rather)...well, let's just say it says a lot about him or maybe his opinion of his audience.

The second(this piece), it seems to me, was an attempt at sarcastic humor. The fun with Charles' name could have been funny had he used a good one once, instead he rode them into the ground.
Then there's the quotes around his name..."Dennis Perrin". Reminds me of a talking head using the little finger quotes on TV, while cocking their head from one side to the other. Whatever the point or humor after that is lost...on me at least. He did that not once, but three times...aarrrggg
