The Dreaded House Mix of Blasphemy

Sat, Dec 8, 2007 at 9:28:00 am PST

A South African dance music company is the next target of the Religion of the Perpetually Offended: Bomb threat after prayer ends up on CD.

Producer Cry Lehlaka only realised the serious error of judgment which DJs Tea and Kay had made on their latest hit house mix when he received a bomb threat.

The sound of the Muslim prayer known as the Ayat-ul-Qursi had “simply appealed” to them, so they had lifted a version of it and used it as part of their new House Therapy compilation. But it wasn’t long before Lehlaka, operations manager at the popular House Therapy production house in Pretoria, was taking calls from Muslim fans furious at the apparent blatant exploitation of a sacred verse.

“There was only one person who threatened me with a bomb,” Lehlaka said, “but most people who phoned were angry. We honestly didn’t realise how serious the lyrics were, so we immediately promised to take the song off the CD, which is what we have done.”

Lehlaka has since been on community radio station Channel Islam to set the record straight, and was scheduled to go on SABC1 last night to emphasise the unbiased position of his production house to Muslim house music fans - and the Muslim community.

“We had gone to see an Islam expert and he explained that we were not supposed to use the prayer in this way,” Lehlaka said on Friday. “Now the people have been very understanding and we’ve removed all the offending lyrics.”

Now imagine the "brave" artist who created Piss Christ in similar circumstances. Oh wait...they don't attack islam.

What's really gross is 1) those who attack Christianity and Judaism are called 'brave' and 2) those who fold for islam always apologize for 'offending.'

However, I'm sure they'd be fine with some of the American Gangsta lyrics where they talk about beating 'hos' (AKA women) and killing cops. That sort of fits right in with their world view...yo.

Christians are offended by the content of music all the time.

There's a big difference though... in that when someone (tastefully) sets sacred Christian texts to music, Christians are ecstatic about the increased exposure.

That's just it Mandy, Christians don't burn people at the stake anymore. Christians can get upset, offended and saddened by blatant disrespect or mockery of its icons and sacraments, but Christians tell themselves that the offenders are just infantile actors, possessed by the ideology of the Adversary [spit].
We get crucifix in a jar of urine, and nobody gets hurt -- it is easy to offend Christians because people know that Christians today are not in the beheading or suicide-bomb business.

Converts To Christianity, Mother Orders His Death

“I received a letter from my mom, threatening me that she was going to kill me if I do not go back to Islam,” ... He took his questions to a sheik in Canada and received a startling answer. “I told him that this religion can not be from God and that I thought that Bin Laden and Al Zawaheri are terrorists. He replied ‘no they are not terrorists, they are the real Muslims.’ That's when I decided to leave Islam.” ... They even had him arrested when went to Morocco for a visit. “I was tortured everyday. They used to hang me upside down and beat me up. After 21 days my mom came and asked me if I have changed my mind, I said that I would never forsake Christ even if she wanted to kill me.” ... But the most vicious attack came after he returned to Canada. A young Moroccan man, who said he was new in town, asked Adam to take him to a mall downtown so he could meet his cousin. At the mall, Adam shared his faith with the two men. As he was preaching the gospel, they pushed him off a balcony and he plunged four-stories to the hard floor below ... “Jesus did not promise us virgins and he did not promise us rivers of wine. Instead he said ‘In the world you will have tribulations but be of good cheer. I have overcome the world.’ ...

Mocking the Prophet and Allah are "crimes" punishable by death...we are all on the list now. My words to those that would wish that upon us are: If your religion is so perfect and right, why are you afraid of words or ridicule? I say you are not so sure about that books of lies you read and base your life on. And, every time someone points out something not right with it or your way of living, it hits that nerve. Or, you are just all thin skinned a**holes.

Oy. You have no idea. I live 20 min walking distance from the Kotel (the Wall) and every morning around 5a.m. we can hear the "call to prayer" from the giant loudspeaker of Al Aksa mosque. Um...besides liking what the little green football stands for :) , ...I'm also too inept at computer tech to try...at least right now...my house is so topsy turvy right now, with the no-water & mixed-up-heating troubles, that I can barely concentrate... :) Give me a bit, I'll get there... :)

oh heck, sorry abt. all that trouble. now's not the time for heat problems. hope you get that all fixed. (btw i'm also going to need some help getting an avatar. my daughter is going to show what to do. and my real my problem is picking something good,) stay warm.

This brother is a true hero. I look forward to meeting him in Heaven someday when he'll be able to pole vault over the Pearly Gates if he wants to! He is living for eternal riches, not the temporary and unimportant trinkets this world offers.

You know, this is perhaps the most understandable outrage yet. While the bomb threats are obviously ridiculous and unwarranted, I think I'd be pretty offended if my prayers were "remixed" for popular consumption. Imagine "Hail Mary" (or your prayer of choice) as a techno dance beat - not especially appealing. Certainly, it's more understandable than outrage over naming a teddy bear.

Remember the song by Prince, called Controversy? Has the entire Lord's Prayer right in the middle. And you're right, getting upset at this makes a little bit of sense; unlike them getting mad about the Mohammed Bear. In fact, I don't care if they're upset, that's OK. It's all the rioting, burning, assaulting and everything else that comes after that bothers me.

And the seething and threatening after an unintentional slight to their religion.

I don't suppose there's going to be either an Islamic MATISYAHU or the Three Islamic Tenors coming out anytime soon.

Seriously I don't see what's the issue, Jewish prayers have been incorporated into songs before by Jewish singers. But then again a religion that is so hostile to music or joy like that, it shouldn't be too surprising.

I think everyone would be far better off if we never heard about or from Islam again. Nobody offended, nobody fearing offending anyone. May it all be forgotten.

110 uptight  Sat, Dec 8, 2007 1:32:11pm

The dilemma is whether what we regard as terrorism and extremism taints the religion as a whole.

Islam at its heart is undoubtedly evil - religious fascist imperialism devised by a psychotic, delusional bandit-cum-pedophile. It would be so easy to deal with if Islam was a small cult like Aum Shinrikyo.

Sadly, a good slice of the world's population is Muslim. We have to deal with them.

Now, every Muslim I've ever know has been really lovely. I think we could all respect Muslims and their beliefs if (and this is important) they met us half way, split from the nutcases and ditched the evil doctrine. Until they do, they have to accept they they and their religion will be tainted by its evil clerics and the faults of its founder.

The ball is (or at least should be) in their court. Perhaps we can think of ways to support them.

One little unintended consequence of this wonderful Iraqi War is taking in displaced people from Iraq. Bush has commited to taking in 14,000 Iraqis this year. That number will increase 10 fold in the years to come. The only thing conervs are pissed about is making terrorists sneak in. They would rather fly thm here at taxpayers expense. Then when they arrive we will provide housing and food stamps and every other social programs including education. These are some of the perks for Iraqis for letting us invade them. Out of the 1st 14,000 how many terrorists might there be, 20, 100, 250 or more. Who knows but I know it only took 19 to pull off 9/11. How many of these people who aren't terrorists just hate our guts. Remember these are the wealthier people who got out. The ones that left homes, jobs, biznesses, autos an every other materialistic thing they owned. There will be partial families with family members dead because of the invasion or religious strife. They may not be terrorists but talk about a fertile recruiting situation. These people have had to live like 2nd class citizens in some neighboring country and even worse when their money ran out. Yeah 1,000's of people who have been used to better coming here with just the clothes on their back. Apparently we haven't learned a thing from France and G Britain. So get used to people getting insulted about books written, cartoons drawn and lyrics used because theres going to be a substantial Muslim population in this country before this things over. I feel for our country when east and west meet. Thanks alot Pres Bush this will create problems we never had to deal with for generations. I don't know about anyone else but Im tired of a cabbie refusing to take me anywhere because Ive got a bottle of scotch hanging out of my bag

The soundtrack from the movie "Exodus" includes the call to prayer. When I was in college way back when (196X), my Western Civ prof went to the trouble to bring the album and his record player (yes, record player) to class one day to expose us to this 'magnificent' soundbite. He was enamored of the religion. I came out of that class thinking that the Crusades were senseless. Years down the road, I finally got my education in that subject.
