-RetweetNancy Pelosi Approved of Waterboarding

Sun, Dec 9, 2007 at 12:09:54 pm PST

In 2002, Nancy Pelosi was a member of a bipartisan group that was made aware of harsh interrogation techniques being used with Islamic terrorists in US custody—and the group not only approved of the tactics (including waterboarding), they asked the CIA to push harder.

In September 2002, four members of Congress met in secret for a first look at a unique CIA program designed to wring vital information from reticent terrorism suspects in U.S. custody. For more than an hour, the bipartisan group, which included current House Speaker Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.), was given a virtual tour of the CIA’s overseas detention sites and the harsh techniques interrogators had devised to try to make their prisoners talk.

Among the techniques described, said two officials present, was waterboarding, a practice that years later would be condemned as torture by Democrats and some Republicans on Capitol Hill. But on that day, no objections were raised. Instead, at least two lawmakers in the room asked the CIA to push harder, two U.S. officials said.

The briefer was specifically asked if the methods were tough enough,” said a U.S. official who witnessed the exchange.

Congressional leaders from both parties would later seize on waterboarding as a symbol of the worst excesses of the Bush administration’s counterterrorism effort. The CIA last week admitted that videotape of an interrogation of one of the waterboarded detainees was destroyed in 2005 against the advice of Justice Department and White House officials, provoking allegations that its actions were illegal and the destruction was a coverup.

Yet long before “waterboarding” entered the public discourse, the CIA gave key legislative overseers about 30 private briefings, some of which included descriptions of that technique and other harsh interrogation methods, according to interviews with multiple U.S. officials with firsthand knowledge.

With one known exception, no formal objections were raised by the lawmakers briefed about the harsh methods during the two years in which waterboarding was employed, from 2002 to 2003, said Democrats and Republicans with direct knowledge of the matter. The lawmakers who held oversight roles during the period included Pelosi and Rep. Jane Harman (D-Calif.) and Sens. Bob Graham (D-Fla.) and John D. Rockefeller IV (D-W.Va.), as well as Rep. Porter J. Goss (R-Fla.) and Sen. Pat Roberts (R-Kan).

I would rather a little discomfort be administered to a murderer for a few minutes than to have 3000 Americans killed because some murderers flew planes into buildings.

Getting information by causing a murderer some discomfort is more acceptable than causing women with small children to die and leave thier children without mothers.

Excerpt from the Daily Kos article:

Back in 2002 around the one year anniversary of 9/11, when the nation was being whipped up in a froth of warmongering and hatred, a very very short list of Democrats where given a super secret briefing on the Thug's plans to torture some people. Since it was classified they couldn't tell anyone else about it. Who knows what they were told, but it was enough to make them complicit. That was the intent of the briefing. It was a torture trap.

It's kind of like a crime boss movie where the new guy is brought in to witness a hit. At that point, he's got the choice to either go to the authorities or keep quiet. If he goes to the cops, you know who is going to be the next one for the meat wagon, and if he stays quiet, he's on the team. He's an accomplice. They own him. He can never get out, because all they need to do is unveil the evidence that he was inon the hit and up he goes for some hard time. He's trapped.

Here we go with the super- secret Bushitler conspiracy/ sabotage by the mil-ind complex.

92 StudSupreme  Sun, Dec 9, 2007 12:55:58pm

I don't understand this.
We are at war. War is simply state-sanctioned mass murder. The state can do this because a functioning society requires that violence/the use of force be the exclusive prerogative of the state. This nation has engaged in state-sanctioned mass murder/war in the past without having lost its roots in freedom, equality under the law and the furtherance of justice. The guiding principles of Life, Liberty and the Pursuit of Happiness did not suddenly vanish during or after ANY of the wars America has fought, including the current one.
Furthermore, the people being interrogated are not simply officers and soldiers of an enemy army captured during a battle; they are bloodthirsty monsters who define their very existence by how much slaughter and carnage they can inflict on unarmed civilians. They have dedicated their lives to committing massive atrocities against the defenseless because it makes them feel good about themselves, and they are glad to die in the attempt.

WHY IS IT A PROBLEM IF THESE BASTARDS ARE TORTURED?

Sorry, but I'm not getting this. At All.

If only Dhimmicrats would put the nation before their political careers...

See also John Edwards, to add one of countless examples:

MSNBC Hardball
October 13, 2003

CHRIS MATTHEWS, HOST: Were we right to go to this war alone [sic], basically without the Europeans behind us [sic]? Was that something we had to do?

SENATOR JOHN EDWARDS (Democrat, North Carolina): I think that we were right to go. I think we were right to go to the United Nations. I think we couldn't let those who could veto in the Security Council hold us hostage.

And I think Saddam Hussein being gone is good. Good for the American people, good for the security of that region of the world, and good for the Iraqi people.

MATTHEWS: If you think the decision, which was made by the president, when basically he saw the French weren't with us and the Germans and the Russians weren't with us, was he right to say, "We're going anyway"?

EDWARDS: I stand behind my support of that, yes.

MATTHEWS: You believe in that?

EDWARDS: Yes.

I feel quite haughty indeed to jab Ms. Blinky Pelosi (even though she is quite deserving of a jab) when those I trusted explicitly lied their brains out. Deception/lies has no bounds and indeed NO party lines...at least this go around anyway.

Of course what's ridiculous about all this is that the Kostards want to say on the one hand that Bush is stupid, and on the other hand that he is a criminal genius. Can't have it both ways.

The explanation requires the expansion of the conspiracy theory; that requires even further willing suspension of disbelief. Nothing you see is real, nothing that any of the particulars say is the "truth." In fact, since we know that they are being pressured by the "evil" conspiracy, the truth must be the polar opposite of whatever they say. You have to understand the hidden "code" (just like the silly Dan Brown book). Only a small circle of initiates on each side know the code. The Kostards, of course, believe themselves to be just such initiates -- they are smarter than reality.

Having discovered the hidden truth, every fact, every piece of news, can be fit into that armature. They won't be fooled, and no amount of "evidence" will dissuade them. In fact, all the evidence does is prove the extent of the conspiracy and confirm what they already know to be true.

Four people shot outside church
A gunman opened fire in the parking lot of a Colorado Springs church on Sunday, striking four people, the church's pastor said. It was not immediately known whether the shootings were related to an earlier shooting about 70 miles away. New Life was founded by the Rev. Ted Haggard, who was fired last year after a former male prostitute alleged he had a relationship with him

From your link:

Haggard, then the president of the National Association of Evangelicals, admitted committing undisclosed "sexual immorality."

Well the AP seems to think the most important part of the story of four people being shot is to tell us all about how immoral Christians are, so, yes, as usual its "open season" on Christians.

It makes me so angry when the media can't just report, they also have to try to "frame" it. Follow the implications of bringing up Haggard and his misbehavior, and it starts reading like the media's saying, "the parishioners deserved it."

Sadly, a lot of Christians don't watch the news on Sunday...church, out to lunch/brunch to fellowship, time with family, and back to a night service. I hope word is getting around pastor to pastor.

Another opportunity for the Internet to inform the masses, so to speak.

PSALM 3
Threatened but Trusting

A psalm of David, when he fled from his son Absalom.

How many are my foes, Lord!

How many rise against me!

How many say of me,
"God will not save that one."

But you, Lord, are a shield around me;
my glory, you keep my head high.

Whenever I cried out to the Lord, I was answered from the holy mountain.

Whenever I lay down and slept, the Lord preserved me to rise again.

I do not fear, then, thousands of people arrayed against me on every side.

Arise, Lord! Save me, my God!
You will shatter the jaws of all my foes;
you will break the teeth of the wicked.

Safety comes from the Lord!

Your blessing for your people!

I wonder how this will affect Congress's approval rating...

Seriously, nobody should be surprised about this. The problem we face is that there is nobody in the msm that does their job and point out these facts until well after the fact.

Now we get to sit back and watch them spin themselves out of this because there is nobody on either side with the intestinal fortitude to hold their feet to the fire (so to speak) about their revolving stances. Their political expediency makes me sick.

215 Troika37  Sun, Dec 9, 2007 1:48:22pm

But... but... but... Now she calls waterboarding torture... Does this mean the military tortured me at SERE? Am I due some sort of reparations? Or is this just more posturing and blustering by a Democrat who believes the media are firmly in her pocket?

The CIA was specificially asked to use more harsh methods. When discussing waterboarding, "the reaction in the room was not just approval, but encouragement."

A slight bit of my faith is restored in the Dem leadership. Even if they're willing to get on tv and slander the troops and go on the record falsly accusing Marines of murder, they seem to understand (behind closed doors) that there is a war on. There is no excuse for the public face they show, but at least they are privately supporting the military and intel communities doing what needs to be done.

That's Ray Hanania, a 'Palestinian'-American comedian who used to have a column in the Israeli newspaper Yediot Achronot. This paragraph is priceless:

Visiting the PNA’s “Ministry of Information” a few years back, I was handed a business card from one of the officials that had a chuckling error. The card did not identify him as a “Public Relations” specialist, but rather as a “Pubic Relations” specialist, an unfortunate typo with embarrassing meaning. I didn’t have the heart to explain how stupid the card made him look.

Hehehehehe. The main problem of Western Civilisation is that it is being run by opportunists with questionable loyalties. If the Western World rediscovers it's Freedomloving, fair and independable roots, we can withstand the islamist invasion and assimilate them. In the Netherlands, leftists are converted to anti- islamism by the dozen. They choose to fight for their Freedom and that of their children. Carel Brendel is a leading figure on the issue. "Torture Trap" - gotta love it.

Dems are never guilty, they just get "trapped". Remember how Clinton was caught in a "Perjury Trap"?

"A perjury trap is created when the government calls a witness before the grand jury for the primary purpose of obtaining testimony from him in order to prosecute him later for perjury."

Funny how that only works if they lie. Tell the truth, and the trap fails.

260 FoolsMate  Sun, Dec 9, 2007 8:27:36pm

re: #92 StudSupreme

I don't understand this.
We are at war. War is simply state-sanctioned mass murder.

There is an difference between murder and killing that may seem overly legalistic but that is actually a critical distinction between the behavior of civilized societies and terrorist organizations. The usual definition of murder is unlawful killing with malice aforethought. That describes perfectly past actions and future intentions of AQ. Killing of enemy combatants in war according with lawful orders, for example as conducted by US military forces in Iraq and elsewhere, is not murder and certainly not mass murder.
