-RetweetConfirmed: Fox and ABC Bail on Paul

Tue, Jan 1, 2008 at 9:06:09 am PST

After conflicting reports on whether Fox News had dropped Ron Paul from an upcoming debate, today it’s confirmed—and Fox isn’t the only network to shun The Only Man Who Can Save America: TV cuts candidates from debates, angering Paul backers.

NEW YORK (AP) — ABC and Fox News Channel are narrowing the field of presidential candidates invited to debates this weekend just before the New Hampshire primary, in Fox’s case infuriating supporters of Republican Rep. Ron Paul.

Fox News says it has limited space in its studio, which leaves Rep. Ron Paul out of a weekend debate. The roster of participants for ABC’s back-to-back, prime-time Republican and Democratic debates Saturday in New Hampshire will be determined after results of Thursday’s Iowa caucus become clear.

Fox, meanwhile, has invited five GOP candidates to a forum with Chris Wallace scheduled for its mobile studio in New Hampshire on Sunday. Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee, Sen. John McCain of Arizona, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney and former Sen. Fred Thompson of Tennessee received invites, leaving Paul of Texas and Rep. Duncan Hunter of California on the sidelines.

The network said it had limited space in its studio — a souped-up bus — and that it invited candidates who had received double-digit support in recent polls.

In a nationwide poll conducted December 14-20 by The Associated Press and Yahoo, Thompson had the support of 11 percent of GOP voters and Paul was at 3 percent.

I'm not happy hearing Fox is leaving Duncan Hunter out, though. That's too bad- he's a staunch conservative and deserves more consideration.

8 sultan_knish  Tue, Jan 1, 2008 9:10:00am

well makes sense frankly, even if I supported Ron Paul, the field is overcrowded enough already and the republican debates have been messy, it's time to narrow the field to the serious contenders and there are enough of those already

Probably not registered, in fact.

11 AuldTrafford  Tue, Jan 1, 2008 9:10:37am

The only danger from this guy is a third-party Perot-ish run. He never had a chance in the GOP primary.

Question: if he runs as a 3d-party, will he be included in post-convention debates?

12 vapig  Tue, Jan 1, 2008 9:11:15am

Why are they focusing their rage on Fox? Why does ABC get to skate by their ire? Are they afraid they'll lose their Magic Kingdom Passes?

13 gop_patriot  Tue, Jan 1, 2008 9:11:34am

Ha ha! Now if the GOP would only bail on Paul, we'd really be getting somwhere.

You're right, I don't understand why people aren't paying more attention to him.

Although, he doesn't seem to have alot of baggage, so the MSM isn't busy putting him on TV and the front page of the papers to try and make him look bad...

It seemed that the debates held by the msm asked WAY too many questions addressed to ronpaul. Was it their attempt to make the Republicans look like loons, guilt by association?

I think the only company more difficult to boycott than Disney is GE.

49 Cerebus  Tue, Jan 1, 2008 9:32:32am

If the Paulians were serious about their candidate, instead of whining and threatening a boycott tantrum, they'd organize a real grass-roots debate on their own to prove how valid their candidate truly is. They could probably get Ron Paul, Alan Keyes, the ghost of Pat Paulson, and maybe they could pool their infinite resources and get Frank Caliendo to do an hour-long George W. Bush impression.

Wait, no, that'd be as useless as everything else they've tried to do. Nevermind.

Ron Paul, being a true libertarian, respects the right of Fox News and ABC to invite (and disinvite) whoever they want to their debates. He understands that he has the ability to buy his own air time (or TV network for that matter) and stage his own debates. John Galt would never piss and moan about being left out of a debate, and I assume neither will Congressman Paul.

I'm glad to see the mad uncle out of the picture, but I'm also glad that the field has been made smaller as maybe, just maybe, the remaining candidates will be allowed more time to answer questions and actually have some time to debate.I'd much rather hear extended answers to questions from a candidate that actually has some chance to win the nomination than 30 second sound bites from those occupying the lower end of the gene pool like Paul or Biden.

Stop the war on drugs, stop the war on terrorism, stop the war on the middle class. Relax a little, don't bogart that, man.

#66 Sharmuta .Agreed-I think that Rudy would make a good AG based on his past record in NYC in the states position. I would damn near be salivating from anticipation at Bolton taking over the State Dep't. The howls piercing the air in the corridors of the building when the announcement came would definitely come under the heading of "priceless". And I don't belive for a nano-second that he would succumb to State Dep't -itis as did Rice.

All well and good. But lets keep our eye on the ball. WE HAVE TO ELECT A REPUBLICAN. G-D how I miss the days of cigar smoke and backroom deals at the conventions.

Since he doesn't appear to have a chance becuase of funds only (which doesn't matter to me and I plan on voting for him on Super Tuesday) I proposed the Thompson/ Hunter ticket.

Ron Paul and the Protocol of the Elders of Zion.

Here are some cut and paste from Herr Doctor's '03 Neo Conned Speech, tell me it don't sound like POEZ. This is why he is so dangerous. [Link: www.house.gov...] :

"There is abundant evidence exposing those who drive our foreign policy justifying preemptive war. Those who scheme are proud of the achievements in usurping control over foreign policy. These are the neoconservatives of recent fame. Granted, they are talented and achieved a political victory that all policymakers must admire. But can freedom and the republic survive this takeover? That question should concern us."

"Neoconservatives are obviously in positions of influence and are well-placed throughout our government and the media. An apathetic Congress put up little resistance and abdicated its responsibilities over foreign affairs. The electorate was easily influenced to join in the patriotic fervor supporting the military adventurism advocated by the neoconservatives."

"There are many reasons why government continues to grow. It would be naяve for anyone to expect otherwise. Since 9-11, protection of privacy, whether medical, personal or financial, has vanished. Free speech and the Fourth Amendment have been under constant attack."

"1. They agree with Trotsky on permanent revolution, violent as well as intellectual.
2. They are for redrawing the map of the Middle East and are willing to use force to do so.
3. They believe in preemptive war to achieve desired ends.
4. They accept the notion that the ends justify the meansЧthat hardball politics is a moral necessity.
5. They express no opposition to the welfare state.
6. They are not bashful about an American empire; instead they strongly endorse it.
7. They believe lying is necessary for the state to survive.
8. They believe a powerful federal government is a benefit.
9. They believe pertinent facts about how a society should be run should be held by the elite and withheld from those who do not have the courage to deal with it.
10. They believe neutrality in foreign affairs is ill advised.
11. They hold Leo Strauss in high esteem.
12. They believe imperialism, if progressive in nature, is appropriate.
13. Using American might to force American ideals on others is acceptable. Force should not be limited to the defense of our country.
14. 9-11 resulted from the lack of foreign entanglements, not from too many.
15. They dislike and despise libertarians (therefore, the same applies to all strict constitutionalists.)
16. They endorse attacks on civil liberties, such as those found in the Patriot Act, as being necessary.
17. They unconditionally support Israel and have a close alliance with the Likud Party. "

Just replace they and neocon with Jew and you're all set.

re: #65 Mike Z as in Jersey

Ron Paul, being a true libertarian, respects the right of Fox News and ABC to invite (and disinvite) whoever they want to their debates. He understands that he has the ability to buy his own air time (or TV network for that matter) and stage his own debates. John Galt would never piss and moan about being left out of a debate, and I assume neither will Congressman Paul.

Pope laments trivialization of sex, lack of hope in young in New Year's Eve homily

Pope Benedict XVI lamented Monday what he called the "trivialization" of sexuality and the lack of faith among young people, saying in a New Year's Eve message that he wanted 2008 to bring hope to all.
...
"Not a few people — especially the young — are attracted to a false exaltation, or rather, a profanation of the body and the trivialization of sexuality," Benedict said. "In other words, even in Rome one feels this deficit of hope and faith in life that constitutes the dark evil of modern Western society."

Dropping Religious Activities Linked To Increased Anxiety In Women

According to Temple University’s Joanna Maselko, Sc.D., women who had stopped being religiously active were more than three times more likely to have suffered generalized anxiety and alcohol abuse/dependence than women who reported always having been active.
...
Conversely, men who stopped being religiously active were less likely to suffer major depression when compared to men who had always been religiously active.
...
“Women are simply more integrated into the social networks of their religious communities. When they stop attending religious services, they lose access to that network and all its potential benefits. Men may not be as integrated into the religious community in the first place and so may not suffer the negative consequences of leaving,” Maselko said

Drive by post but I gotta say I think it's wrong for ABC and Fox to cut out Ron Paul AND Duncan Hunter before the Iowa caucuses and the New Hampshire primary.
They didn't have enough room in the studio? Well screw it - get a bigger studio.
I really dislike Ron Paul and really like Duncan Hunter (though I'm a Rudy fan first) but these "debates" are no such thing - they give each candidate just enough time for a sound bite and then move on.
Dropping Paul and Hunter isn't going to improve that situation at all.
And frankly, as a Republican, I don't think it should be up to the effin' MSM to decide which Republican Candidates are "eligible" for their debates.
If the GOP wants to have Paul and Hunter dropped as candidates, that's one thing, but it sure as hell shouldn't be ABC or Fox's decision to make.

First off, Fox and ABC have the right to include eliminate anyone they want. But if you go by New Hampshire polls, it's Thompson who doesn't make the top 5, not RP.

RCP average has RP at 7.0% in New Hampshire, Fred at 3.6%. Not a single poll shows Fred ahead of RP in New Hampshire.

This will backfire in RP's favor, because it certainly gives the appearance of unfairness and bias.

And each villian in the speech, almost exclusively is Jewish (with the exception of Machievelli and Jews sympathetic Bush officials). Strauss, Leeden, Kristol, Wolfowitz, but a few. Check Dr. Pissheads own words.

I think he stole that speech from Pat Buchanan.

Note: that linked editorial/screed is more recent than the anti-neocon speech and/or TV interview I'm referring to, which was right after 9/11, as I recall. Can find a link at the moment. In addition, most of the anti-war Left has, on multiple occasions, expressed similar barely-disguised (and completely undisguised) Jew-bashing. Charles has posted about it many times.

On New Year's Day in 1863, the Republican Party's Emancipation Proclamation came into effect. While Republicans rejoiced, Democrat politicians and newspapers denounced President Abraham Lincoln (R-IL) for freeing slaves. Demonstrating their depravity, New York's Gov. Horatio Seymour, who would be the 1868 Democrat presidential nominee, denounced the Emancipation Proclamation as "a proposal for the butchery of women and children." The Louisville Daily Democrat called it "an outrage of all constitutional law, all human justice, all Christian feeling."

Armed militants attacked targets in Nigeria's main oil industry center of Port Harcourt on Tuesday, leaving 13 people dead, a military spokesman said.

Bands of armed men invaded the city in the morning, attacking two police stations and raiding the lobby of a major hotel. Four policemen, three civilians and six attackers were killed, said Lt. Col. Sagir Musa, spokesman of the military task force in charge of security in Nigeria's troubled oil region.

I do not detest Ron Paul. I detest many of his rabid supporters. I live in South Texas and have known of Ron Paul for years. On domestic politics, he is as solid as a rock. The minute the topic is outside the US borders, however, he does not inspire confidence, to say the least.

I do not loathe him. Nor do I think it is Fox News' and ABC News' prerogative to summarily "dump" both Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter.

Any talk about how "the field's too big" should be settled either by "we the people" at the voting booth or over the cost of a long, expensive campaign: There will be attrition of candidates (look at Tom Tancredo and at least one or two Demo also-rans who have already dropped out).

I cannot see how anyone in here would prefer to delegate their candidate selection to the folks at FoxNews or ABC News.

Ron Paul and Duncan Hunter should be in the debate. Full disclosure: Duncan Hunter is my first choice.

A group of several dozen youth attacked the police station in Slotervaart at the turn of the year. They smashed up three police cars, including one surveillance car and two civilian cars. Windows in the station were smashed as well.

The riot police was called in, but was not put into action. For the time being, the police has not apprehended anybody.

Haven't read the comments yet, however after reading Steigerwald's obsequious drivel over RP's supposed devotion to the Constitution, followed by the sickeningly vapid comments from the paulinistas in which those of us against RP are simply 'christo-fascists wanting never-ending bloodshed of (hold your gorge here) "innocent muslims" in retaliation for 9/11', I had to come over here for some sanity with my morning coffee.

I am convinced, however, that if this idiot does make an independent run, he will drain more leftists. The fact that the people fawning over him are associated with the New Republic magazine (started by known communist and soviet agent, Michael Straight - see pgs 65-66, "Blacklisted by History", M. Evans), make it pretty clear he is getting the unhinged fringes of both the left and the right...but primarily the left. The more you read the comments of the paulbats, the more obvious it becomes they are anti-war, anti-capitalist freaks.

I was infuriated at the MSM's biased reporting during the 2004 election. This was not election coverage, it was manipulation of public opinion for their favored Democrat candidate. It was great watching the election coverage at about 2 AM. I had been counting votes for my employer, a metro-Atlanta county and while we know who was winning locally, we had no idea what was going on nationally. Got home and turned on the news and there was Dan Rather. Dan didn't look to good. He looked like he had the emotional stuffing beat out of him. So did the rest of the anchors. The Ohio results had just come in and Bush had won! Amazingly the NYT's reported the next day that all the major networks had been called by the DNC and asked to suppress the news that Ohio had elected Bush. FOX was the only news broadcaster that did not honor the DNC's request. If this is not a conspiracy by the MSM then what is? It was really great to see Dan on his last legs, knowing that Charles and the LGF was so instrumental to his downfall.

re: #154 AuldTrafford

The problem is that many staunch conservatives aren't projecting analysis properly. Nixon was conservative, but, socially liberal in many ways. He behaved such out of pragmatist. The country had taken a huge step toward socialism through Johnson's great society legislation. Once the progression has begun it becomes both politically an economically painful to return to conservative principles.
Now we have progressed far down socialist footpaths. The conservative culture of post wwii is totally unrecognizable today. These type problems affect ' conservative' Republican executive politicians when they try to govern ( particularly liberal ) states today. The bright side is that conservatives can still manage to get elected.
Take my area, central Indiana, conservative values one would think. The fact of the matter is that our government for over a decade has gone in for massive subsidization of business, industry and sports franchise. They say because they need to compete with other states and locals. You know, their right. Sad, but true.
Big problems loom. Local, State and federal budgets are bursting. Our currency is in the dumpster and the Demo's continue to push for an ever- greater federal role.
I fear we can never role back. Our great nation is on the decline. The socialist and the ever- greedy and advantageous businessmen will strip the carcus. Vultures may feast for years.

re: #188 Occasional Reader

Yup. We didn't beat Kerry in that election. We beat our TV's. I swear elections are just a massive socialist plot to see just how much sway the 'Commie/Socailist/Lib/Dem' media have on the public. They received a dose of reality that election. Heh.

Was it one of these or one of his regular albums? Coe put out some really ugly stuff in the 80s. From Wiki:

Coe recorded two albums in the 1980s containing racist and misogynistic lyrics of extreme vulgarity. "Nothing Sacred" and "Underground Album". Also available is a best of the x-rated albums compilation entitled "18-X Rated Hits".

Area: Africa´s largest country, Sudan is divided on ethnic, religious and ideological grounds. Sudan has a total area of 2,505,800 sq km (967,500 sq mi).

Capital: Khartoum

Language: The official language of Sudan is Arabic. English and many local dialects are widely spoken, and African languages are used in the south. A program of Arabization is in place to encourage greater use of Arabic in the south.

Religion: About 70 percent of the people of Sudan are Muslim, some 25 percent follow traditional religions, and most of the remainder are Christian. The people of northern Sudan are predominantly Sunni Muslims. Most of the people in the south either practice traditional religions or are Christian.

The Muslim Brotherhood, which originated in Egypt, has been active in Sudan since its formation there in 1949. It emerged from Muslim student groups that first began organizing in the universities during the 1940s, and its main support base has remained the college educated. The Muslim Brotherhood's objective in Sudan has been to institutionalize Islamic law throughout the country. Hassan Abd Allah at Turabi, former dean of the School of Law at the University of Khartoum, had been the Muslim Brotherhood's secretary general since 1964. He began working with Nimeiri in the mid-1970s, and, as his attorney general in 1983, played a key role in the controversial introduction of the sharia. After the overthrow of Nimeiri, Turabi was instrumental in setting up the NIF, a Brotherhood-dominated organization that included several other small Islamic parties. Following the 1989 coup, the RCC-NS arrested Turabi, as well as the leaders of other political parties, and held him in solitary confinement for several months. Nevertheless, this action failed to dispel a pervasive belief in Sudan that Turabi and the NIF actively collaborated with the RCC-NS. NIF influence within the government was evident in its policies and in the presence of several NIF members in the cabinet

I largely agree; the states can do little, independently, to reverse the socialistic trend (which, in my view, stems largely from the judicial one-man-one-vote fiat - which allows the foxes to outvote the lambs on what's-for-dinner). But not so sure it's too late at the national level. At the very least, it's worth hoping for a truly conservative national leader.

Come on. You know it would have taken a 2/3rds majority vote in the Senate to remove BJ Clinton. There were two articles of impeachment to vote on. One was strong, one was weak. Knowing that the chances of removal were between slim to none, I believe Fred voted his conscience. He voted for the strong one.

It would be na%u044Fve for anyone to expect otherwise.

4. They accept the notion that the ends justify the means%u0427that hardball politics is a moral necessity.

That speech, in a nutshell, is why I viscerally distrust anybody claiming to be a "paleolibertarian".

These people are projecting their own Messiah complex onto others: they (the paleolibs, not the neocons) are willing to throw anything and everything to the wolves in order to create their dream of an anarcho-libertarian utopia.

I agree with you on that. Having 15 candidates in a debate will not work. Saw a web cast of a great debate between Gingrich and Coumo and both were class acts. From Texas:

A Texas woman is demanding an apology from her city’s mass transit system after she was booted off a bus for reading the Bible aloud, MyFoxDFW.com reported Monday.Christine Lutz was on her way to church and reading passages to her children on The T bus when the driver suddenly interrupted her.

The driver of the bus, Killgore Trout, is also rumored to have snatched the Bible from the womans hands, threw it to the ground, and stomped on it repeatedly. He then grabbed a bottle of milk from the womans youngest child's mouth, emptied it on the ground, and refilled it with whiskey from the flask he carried in his pocket. The passengers cheered Killgore and his heroic stand on freedom from religion.

"There's no place for religion in a free society," Killgore is reported to have sneered as he plopped the bottle back into the child's mouth.

Happy New Year, Fellow Lizards!

Sigh...ok...my first rant of 2008...now need more coffee...

Here is more about Michael Straight (the first publisher of TNR was actually Henry Wallace, of all people):

[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]

However, after Marty Peretz bought over the magazine (he also edited it for a long time) TNR was actually the more moderate voice on the "left" (unless you count Time and Newsweek as part of the "left"). Recently they've gone round the bend again under this Franklin Foer dude, I think.

More on the mag's history at (caveat lector, as always with Wikipedia):

Global warming hard at work...

CONCORD, N.H. (AP) - Today's snowstorm made this month the snowiest December in New Hampshire in more than a century.

The National Weather Service in Gray, Maine, said Concord, where New Hampshire records are kept, beat the previous record of 43 inches of snow in December by an inch and a half. That record was set in 1876.

Overall, the storm left 10.1 inches in Concord, and more in other parts of the state.

Amsterdam: Police station attacked

A group of Moroccans smashed up police cars and attacked a police station in Amsterdam. The youth caused a great deal of damage, but were not apprehended.

In October, Moroccan Bilal B (22) was shot dead by a police agent in the same police department after he attacked her and a colleague with a knife. For several weeks later there were riots in the neighborhood and various card set afire.

So not one cop fired back? WTF. There would be no need to apprehend if I was there. They could tag the bodies.

What other choice do they have, but to shun him?

Still...I cannot fathom why the RNC hasn't done the same or worse to of !Luap Nor.

Doesn't make any sense...unless they tacitly agree with the guy.

Or either of the following:

(a) They're thinking he's a nuisance that can eventually be waved away

(a) They're giving him enough rope to hang himself. I'm reminded of when the elder Bush basically read Pat Buchanan out of the party (although formally he only left much later --- anybody can register as Donk, Elephant, or Independent, as long as they're US citizens). Note also that this happened after Bush 41 was already the clear front-runner for the nomination

(b) They're trying to get him to run a third-party ticket (based on "how well he did in the primaries yet the GOP won't listen to him"), assuming that his looney anti-war, anti-Israel, isolationist,... positions will draw more votes from the looney "left" (especially if Hillary gets the Donk nomination) than from the looney "right" --- thus guaranteeing a GOP victory in the general election.

The trouble with the Macchiavellist scenario (b) is that it's the sort of scheme Karl Rove would love, yet he's no longer their strategist.

Does respecting the right of others to hold their beliefs equate to anyone who does not hold those beliefs or who has criticisms of them zipping it? Isn't that the muslim position?

Pissing off half the people on this board only makes your positions more difficult to debate. Fine response, KT. Intellectually empty and avoids actually responding.

Science is a wonderful tool. I use it everyday in my job. By the way, would you mind providing a scientific answer to the question of which came first?

1) DNA
2) DNA gyrase
3) Ribosomes

You could win a Nobel Prize if you come up with the answer. No macro-evolutionist has been able to come up with a scientific answer to that question, so they ironically pout out an answer based on faith...which always cracks me up when I'm discussing it with them.

You don't like Catholicism. It is quite apparent from your history of posts. Fine. As we are living in a free country based on Judeo-Christian ethics, you are absolutely entitled to your opinion and the right to express it. I am equally entitled to counter and ridicule (when appropriate) your bigotry.

When comparing life under a modern Judeo-Christian nation versus a modern atheistic nation, I highly doubt sane people would choose the atheistic governmental construct...unless, of course, they were the ones sitting at the center of power.

I feel sooo much better already. More energy, food tastes better. It's well worth the effort.

I quit in 1995 at the age of 27.
What a difference it makes. It's like being reborn.
Join a gym if you haven't already. take it slow but set some lofty goals.
run a 5 K or 10 K if your doc gives you the all clear. it might take a year or more but go for it.
Did I mention that most men that need Viagra are smokers...

Ahhh... I smoke two packs a day, I'm 55... and without going into details... let's say I'm quite frisky.
Walter in "

Walter. good for you. I wish you continued health and happiness into your 90's. Let your grandchildren say My grandfather smoked until he was...and

But that is an anecdotal report, like saying I played Russian Roulette and survived, therefore I colclude it's a safe game. The data at large say something totally different

And I agree, 100 percent. I have made a number of health and life changes over the last 2 years. Stop drinking completely, go to the gym at least 2 times a week, have lost about 150 pounds, eat much better (ok... Dec. 07 doesn't count) but the smokes have been on the back burner.

I can do it, when I want to, just don't want to right now. I put the the booze, cold turkey, I can do the same with the butts when I am ready.

My post wasn't an attempt to tell anyone to go ahead and keep smoking, as you say, it is an anecdotal report.

I think the "frisky" has been due to the changes I have made mentioned above.

DAKAR (Reuters) - Two U.S. Navy sailors were found dead on Tuesday in their hotel room while on shore leave in the West African country of Ghana, the U.S. Navy said in a statement.

The cause of death was unknown and was being investigated by Ghanaian authorities in cooperation with U.S. Navy officials, the statement said. Both sailors were stationed aboard the ship Fort McHenry, which was conducting a port visit to Ghana as part of an Africa naval partnership program.

Strong quakes jolt Papua New Guinea

Published: 01.01.08, 21:41 / Israel News

Two strong quakes, a magnitude 6.2 quickly followed by a magnitude 6.1 aftershock, struck Papua New Guinea on Tuesday, on the eastern shore of the main island of New Guinea, the US Geological Survey reported.

The first quake, initially reported as a magnitude 6.7 but later verified at 6.2, was centered 55 miles north of the town of Lae. It was only 29.8 miles deep. The aftershock, deeper at 38.5 miles, struck at 7:13pm GMT, very nearby, 46 miles north of Lae.

Yes, I quit a few months ago. I've had a few relapses but I'm still hanging in there.

Loved to smoke, never had any intention of quiting. Loved it.

Then, several years ago, my mother was on her deathbed, and the last thing that she said to me was, "I wish you would stop smoking!" Bang! Ya got me Mom.

I quit that instant, not because I wanted to, but to honor my Mother's last wish.

Under those circumstances, it was easy. It didn't matter if I suffered or not, it was a done deal. I would simply never smoke again.

The jitters only lasted a couple of days, then remarkable things happened.

My senses of smell and taste returned (actual tongue taste, I still wear plaid leisure suits). and after a year, or so, I noticed that I didn't have a cold. Hadn't had one in quite a while. Have only had one or two since then. I used to think that everyone had 3, or 4 colds a year. Thought that was normal...ain't so.

Stay at it. Triumph over this very strong addiction. It's not that you'll live longer, it's that the everyday quality of your life will be much, much better.

I won't wish you GOOD LUCK, 'cause Luck's got nothing to do with it, but I will wish you a HAPPY NEW YEAR TO YOU AND YOURS!

G-d Bless You... :-)

Well then try a little patience, and courtesy. This is not a life and death situation out of "24", this is reasoned debate, and debate requires some patience. Pissing off half the people on this board only makes your positions more difficult to debate. Just because you are anonymous doesn't give you the right to insult LGF members who are expressing their opinions, even if they are wrong. Why do I get the feeling that I am talking to a brick wall?

Using the word 'bullshit' in disagreement with a fellow poster does not equate to insulting them. However, calling those you disagree with a bunch of sick people IS an insult.

From Miguel:

allies who turn out to be sick people with the obession of disrespecting others.

It seems to me your point about insult is directed at the wrong person.

I agree. Pat Buchanan and his fellow travelers are a decidedly unhealthy association for the Republicans. Buchanan himself left the GOP to take over/wreck Ross Perot's "Reform Party" some time ago, but he is still treated with undeserved respect by mainstream Republican figures. I stopped listening to Sean Hannity when he had Buchanan on his show multiple times and steadfastly refused to press him on his blatantly antisemitic views, even after callers gave him grief for it.

Have you been praying for strength?

Well, don't.

According to a minister I once talked to, she said when one prays for strength, then, well, God will put stuff (paraphrasing) in ones life that makes one STRONG.

Had never thought of it in that way. Kind of makes sense though.

i have heard that before. and i am strong, in some ways. hmmm. maybe i did pray for strength but that was only after i realized pops was demented and giving his assets away and i would have to take actual legal action. i will now pray for good health. and a peaceful, calm, even boring life. and for good sense. and prosperity. and happiness. in fact, all those things for all good lizards.

Another thing NEVER to pray for is: PATIENCE!

Intellectualism and total faith in science are the roots of Socialism and Totalitariianism.

Don't think I agree with that. Not sure there's much wrong with science (when it's real science - not scare-politics, ala AlGore); I think, rather, it is allowing greed to reign over responsibility - the type of thing that happens with one-man-one-vote. When that's your system you allow the greedy masses to rob (with the guns of government) from the responsible producers.

There is nothing in the US Constitution about one-man-one-vote; that is a judicial manufacture based loosely (and erroneously) on equal protection. The "grand experiment" of the US was a republican form of government - not a democracy.

re: #467 Jimmah

Your response is well couched. I was merely pointing out (based on numerous debates with atheist colleagues) that when questioned on the ultimate microbiological "chicken or the egg" conundrum, I have been repeatedly amused by their response...relying utterly on the "we haven't been able to figure that out yet" faith-based response.

The best answer I ever heard, from my cousin the atheist evolutionary biologist, was that the conditions present in the primordial maelstrom are so completely unknown to our understanding that we haven't been able to replicate the chemical and electrical soup theoretically necessary to cause DNA to form and the exact instant that ribsomes (coded for in DNA) formed to read the genetic coding in DNA...and at the exact moment that the enzyme DNA gyrase (also coded for in DNA) was formed to allow the double helix structure of DNA to unzip, thus allowing the ribosomes to glom on to read the DNA...and this doesn't even begin to deal with the three main types of RNA required to initiate transcription of new proteins from the DNA code.

Don't get me wrong, I have no problem accepting the concept of micro-evolution, as we can see that quite clearly everyday. Macro-evolution, however, is a wobbly theory at best that has taken on all the aspects (so shunned by the more militant atheists) of a religious belief, ironically claiming to be a scientific fact when in reality it requires believers to accept huge concepts solely on faith.

You choose to deny the possibility of a supernatural source for anything. OK. I choose to belief in the concept of God as defined by the Magisterium of the Catholic Church, based on the interpretations of the writings of Saints Augustine and Thomas Aquinas on the meaning of Christ. Fine. That doesn't mean we have to be enemies in order to discuss our differing opinions. I am perfectly happy to engage in civil discourse, but I am not afraid to meet boorish behavior with the ridicule it deserves.

re: #495 Babydoc97

I checked the past threads on this subject and 'gasp!' someone ganged up on Miguel in Mexico? How could they do that to such thing to him?

We need to respect each other and listen each other without jumping on them or gang up on them...

I do appreciate different viewpoints being presented here and I appreciate that we have all kinds of people here, agnostics, Christians, Jews, atheists all expressly supporting freedom and democracy (or strong hand government if the populace cannot control themselves) and I appreciate to find all these folks from different viewpoints supporting Israel's right to exist. This means that it is NOT exclusive to Christian Zionists.

We each of us have different reasons to support Israel, a relatively secular governed country in the midst of Muslim countries. Lebanon is losing and not longer a 'Christian' or 'Christian' governed country.

For the Catholics, please do not take it personal when there is criticism levelled at Catholic Church leaders. These leaders do need a reality check. Take a look at the pedophilia lawsuits all over America. It is not restricted to one area of the country or to one city...it seems like many major metropolitan areas were affected. The leaders should do some soul searching why this happened and how could this have happened. Priests should be someone a child should totally trust and confide. Now a priest cannot be alone with a child in a closed room. Why do many priests succumb to this situation and why did not the Catholic Church leaders recognize the problem and do something about it way before any other children are hurt and get the secular Justice Department involved in ecclesiastical issue?

The soul searching that needs to be done is which is more important, the loss of innocence of children or the preservation of the sanctity of priesthood? In the Gospels, the Lord Jesus reserved some of the strongest condemnation on anyone who have led innocent children to the wrong path or hurt them. This is from Matthew:

And whoso shall receive one such little child in my name receiveth me.
But whoso shall offend one of these little ones which believe in me, it were better for him that a millstone were hanged about his neck, and that he were drowned in the depth of the sea.
Woe unto the world because of offences! for it must needs be that offences come; but woe to that man by whom the offence cometh!
Wherefore if thy hand or thy foot offend thee, cut them off, and cast them from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life halt or maimed, rather than having two hands or two feet to be cast into everlasting fire.
And if thine eye offend thee, pluck it out, and cast it from thee: it is better for thee to enter into life with one eye, rather than having two eyes to be cast into hell fire.
Take heed that ye despise not one of these little ones; for I say unto you, That in heaven their angels do always behold the face of my Father which is in heaven.

You can see from the context of the entire paragraph, Jesus was concerned about the little children and that no harm come to them. Yet it seems like the Catholic leaders were more concerned about the priests' reputation than to prevent other children being hurt. Instead of removing the offending priests from ministry, they moved to other cities, thus spreading emotional and spiritual damage to other children. This is not to say that this is limited to Catholic Church, just that the Catholic leaders could have done much better to prevent this and they did not. The question is, do they truly believe Jesus from the Gospels when He clearly condemned anyone hurting or offending these innocent children?

BRITISH commandos launched a devastating blitz on the Taliban – as the evil terrorists held a party to celebrate Benazir Bhutto’s murder.

The dawn raid was staged after messages were intercepted about the sick knees-up in Afghanistan’s Helmand province.

Royal Marines crept into position as the fanatics partied the night away just hours after Ms Bhutto was killed in Pakistan.

The bash was being held in ruined compounds a few hundred yards from Our Boys’ remote base in Kajaki.

Ragtag Taliban sentries tried to hit back with machine gun fire – but stood no chance against the heroes of 40 Commando’s Charlie Company.

The terrorists were pounded with mortars, rockets and heavy machine guns.

Two bloodthirsty revellers trying to creep towards Our Boys in a trench were spotted by thermal-imaging equipment – and targeted with a Javelin heat-seeking missile.

Read "No More Good Men", if you want to know why the pedophilia scandal occured within the Catholic Church. I can't recall the author's name at the moment, but you ought to be able to google the title or run it by on amazon.

Personally, I don't have a problem pointing out the weakness or fallacies of individuals in leadership positions within the Church. Many times I found myself at odds with the previous and the current Pope regarding statements made on US military actions/policies. I am still annoyed with Pope Benedict for his sheepish behavior during his visit to the Hagia Sophia last year. I am irritated that the Church went with the bland, watered-down Novus Ordo, rather than maintaining the Tridentine Mass. What I will combat, however, are bigoted statements against the Catholic Church as a whole.

But macro evolution is just (lots of) micro evolution. The distinction is almost* as meaningless as the distinction between micro and macro arithmentic. A bit like saying :'Small numbers add up to bigger numbers, yes, but are you trying to tell me that you could arrive at a BILLION through nothing more than addition of these small numbers? That's mathematics gone mad!'

*There are some stages in the evolution of life, for example, the advance from single celled to multi-cellular life that are more complicated than just 'more of the same', but if you look for the relevant literature on these questions I think you'll be captivated and inspired by the work that is being done to understand them.

RE: 560 psaturn

And absolutely, the manner in which the Church Leadership handled the degenerate "priests" who sexually assaulted children was beyond disgusting. Every single one of those perverts should have been immediately stripped of Holy Orders, and handed over to the courts for maximum sentencing. Every one of the bishops who knowingly transferred these perverts to other diocese to prey on kids again should have also been stripped of all religious office and turned over to the authorities for sentencing for conspiracy to commit sexual assault on a minor.

Of course then, the leftists would start hammering the Church even harder for being "homophobic"...

What I will combat, however, are bigoted statements against the Catholic Church as a whole.

Those are the same criticisms I have been making that gets me labeled as an anti-Catholic bigot. Go ahead, link to an article about a priest sex abuse scandal and see what happens. Disagree with a papal statement and you'll be accused of chasing people off the blog.

This is probably a good place for me to post this.
It is especially interesting for those who understand my nic.

Although he later repented, J. Michael Straczynski, the creator of Babylon 5 tv show and movies, gave some money to the Ron Paul campaign.

Straczynski is a great fiction writer. B5 is one of my all time favorite series.
But like many in Hollywood, he is a bit of a moonbat.

But Bruce Boxleitner (Sheridan) and Jerry Doyle (Garibaldi) are good conservatives. Wish Jerry's radio show came on at a reasonable time here.

re: #592 Jimmah

I would love to take a look at the relevent lit...do you have any particular recommendations?

Just to clarify - micro-evolution is exeplified by things like changes in eye color, hair color, skin color, body (part) sizes, intellectual capacity...things that don't change the essential composition of a creature within its species. Macro-evolution is the concept that chimps can become orangutans then gorillas then homo sapiens (or whatever pathway the darwinists claim to believe nowadays), and that chimps derive from ancestors reaching all the way back to trilobytes, then back to single-celled organisms. That's what I have a very difficult time accepting, because what I see from a medical standpoint, such macro-evolution isn't possible.

I would dispute your arithmatic analogy, however. The basic concept of macro-evolution is that slight genetic changes occured over vast lengths of time. The whole "survival of the fittest" concept means that any particular mutation, to be beneficial, needed to imbue the individual with a greater chance to live long enough to mate and pass on his or her particular genetic mutation. We know medically that the vast majority of mutations that occur are not compatible with life, which the Darwinian would say supports the theory that such mutations require large timespans to occur. If that is the case, why is there no fossil record showing these tiny changes? What is the likelihood that a slight change in the flipper structure to a seaborn creature that allows better mobility on land for a small amount of time would in any way improve the creature's swimming ability and chances for survival to procreate? What is the likelihood that this genetic mutation (if it existed) would occur at the same time that a genetic mutation occured allowing said creature the capacity to breath air rather than water? Why is there no fossil record showing this transition?

Humans have 46 chromosomes, as I'm sure you know, of which 23 need to come from each parent. Should an extra chromosome mistakenly end up within the fertilized egg, you end up with some of the most lethal and/or devastating genetic conditions (Trisomy 13, Trisomy 18, Trisomy 21, and 47,XYY syndromes). Should a chromosome be missing, you end up with things like Turner's Syndrome - though not necessarily life-threatening, certainly not of genetic benefit, particularly when virtually all women afflicted with Turner's are sterile. We know about all kinds of translocations, such as the Philadelphia translocation, and the medical literature has new reports of previously unknown chromosomal translocations, uniparental duplications, microdeletions, and replications (such as fragile X syndrome). Science is learning dizzingly more about the inner workings of genetics all the time. However, nobody has yet found a beneficial chromosomal microdeletion, translocation, replication, aneuploidy or polyploidy of which I am aware. Sure, you can argue this is due to selection bias, since we don't do in-depth genetic analysis on people unless we find something grossly abnormal on physical exam, but that doesn't explain why nobody is seeing any corresponding positive genetic-based syndromes. Perhaps we should begin doing karyotypes Flourescent in-Situ Hybridization (FiSH) panels on our best atheletes, our most beautiful, our most intelligent, and our most successful people to look for such theoretical positive genetic benefits.

I'd be happy to find that I am wrong, however my belief is that such a study wouldn't show anything other than micro-evolution at work. Show me a human with a different number of chromosomes than 46 who is in some way manifesting a superior/beneficial ability than a standard 46 XX or 46XY homo sapiens sapiens individual, then I might be persuaded to accept the concept of macro-evolution. Till then, I'm skeptical.

re: #613 solomonpanting

Yup. That's what the article says:

The network said it had limited space in its studio — a souped-up bus — and that it invited candidates who had received double-digit support in recent polls.

In a nationwide poll conducted December 14-20 by The Associated Press and Yahoo, Thompson had the support of 11 percent of GOP voters and Paul was at 3 percent.

So it's not the MSM, it's Paul's lack of support.

If they were to accommodate every loon who wanted to be the GOP candidate there'd be no time for an actual debate.

KT, I never said anything about you chasing somebody off a blog, and frankly, I'm sick and tired of this effeminate, thin-skinned culture we've turned into that simply disagreeing with someone equates to being 'mean'. No matter how much you and I may disagree on Catholicism, what good is one's belief set if you can't weather the rhetorical assault? Besides, the more pointed your anti-Catholic barbs, the better I can hone my own position...and in the event you post something accurate, we may even agree (gasp)!

Post what you will on the "priest" homosexual assaults. I am so angry with the clergy for covering up these crimes and trying to make excuses for the horrors they inflicted on innocent children I stopped giving money to the Church years ago. I think where we differ (other than the obvious Catholic vs atheist bent) is that I don't hold the teachings of the Catholic Church responsible, but rather the effeminate pinkos in positions of power within the Church who attempted to cover up this scandal.

Anyway...I've dallied enough today and need to get some housework done. Have a great New Year, KT...even when we're at each other's rhetorical throats...:)

They probably wouldn't have been reassign parishes if they were guilty of embezzlement time and time again.

My best friend's brother was sexually abused by a priest and he is messed up today.

Clinton holds lead as Romney slips in Iowa
DES MOINES, Iowa (Reuters) - Democrat Hillary Clinton and Republican Mike Huckabee hold narrow leads on their top rivals two days before the state opens the presidential nominating race, according to a Reuters/C-SPAN/Zogby poll released on Tuesday.

Clinton, a New York senator, maintained a stable four-point edge over Illinois Sen. Barack Obama, 30 percent to 26 percent, in the Democratic race. Former North Carolina Sen. John Edwards was in third at 25 percent, down one point overnight.
[SNIP]
Among Republicans, Huckabee has solidified his lead over Romney while under attack over his Arkansas record on immigration, taxes and crime.
[SNIP]
Former New York Mayor Rudy Giuliani, who has focused on later states and largely bypassed Iowa, was at 8 percent in the Republican race. Texas Rep. Ron Paul was at 7 percent, and California Rep. Duncan Hunter was at 1 percent.
[emphasis added, realwest; see Submitted links next thread for the Link].

re: #7 Sharmuta

I'm not happy hearing Fox is leaving Duncan Hunter out, though. That's too bad- he's a staunch conservative and deserves more consideration.

But Sharmuta -- He's big-government on abortion - pushing for a constitutional amendment banning abortion. Abortion is absolutely none of the federal government's business. Roe v Wade is stupid and illegitimate, and should (and will) simply be tossed out -- but nothing more -- we don't need new federal laws concerning murder, rape, or various other actions like abortion. He can just stay out of it and leave those matters to us, our states, and our religions and convictions and traditions. I am sick of fed solutions to problems in my back yard!

He wants another amendment 'defining' marriage - I don't need the federal government telling me the definition of marriage, no matter how silly and stupid and impossible my church, and my state and I may believe it to be. He wants the federal government to tell us who may and who may not be parents -- again, why would I ever consider the federal government's opinion about such things any of their damn business? he would seriously harm our economy - limiting our growth and competitiveness - by further restricting our right to do business as we please with others. He doesn't understand the law of comparative advantage, and he is harming our nation with his nationalist populist anti-trade rhetoric. He is saying stupid and misleading things to Americans about how wealth is created and how our economy is changing and how our standard of living continues to improve despite his legislative meddling to buy votes. His stupid one-way-street idiocy with China couldn't be more backward and wrong. There's no one-way-street. Why on Earth would we be doing it all these years if it was one way? Where does he think those dollars go to? Does he think they're just tossed into the ocean? Hunter says he want us to not lose manufacturing jobs to others? Heh -- does he also want us to all just go back to farming, like we were 100 years ago?

That said -- I'd still vote for Duncan over any of the socialist Dimocrats, and several of the Republicans too. I just don't like Republican candidates who mislead voters about basic economic principles and facts that involve the freedom and prosperity of our people. His foreign trade schtick, and the way he tries to push the idea that Mexicans are taking away our jobs is wrong and misleading. There's nothing 'conservative' at all about Duncan's meddling in our lives and our economy as he proposes.

[Link: www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov...]

discussed here

[Link: blog.lib.umn.edu...]

What is the likelihood that this genetic mutation (if it existed) would occur at the same time that a genetic mutation occured allowing said creature the capacity to breath air rather than water? Why is there no fossil record showing this transition?

Why would they have to occur at exactly the same time? Perhaps the hypothetical creature in question evolved to breathe air, due to low oxygen levels in the water, for example, and then developed it's limbs, exploiting opportunities for food, escape etc afforded by being able to crawl out of the water. That is a much more likely route for evolution for creatures like the mudskipper. Assuming the unlikeliest possible scenario, and then knocking it down and declaring victory over 'evolutionists' is a creationist websites stock in trade, of course. You should be sceptical of anyone who uses those sort of disingenuous tactics.

To find out more, research the science yourself by reading up on these subjects at scientific websites. Many of the answers to your questions - such as why the fossil record is very incomplete but nonetheless extremely impressive - are readily available. You may even be surprised how many scientists working in these fields will answer your questions by email if you need clarification on anything.

Paulians are good at faking sites. Here are 2 for the "ADL". Obviously they are not. One is geared towards Jews (I guess) the other very hateful, yet they are both apparently the built by the same group. I put in a - in lieu of the . before us, because I know Charles does not like to link hate sites direct from LGF.

There are atheists here, as well as devout believers. In general, there isn't a problem between us, as we are all here because of the common thread: the threat of Islamic-motivated terrorism.

There are also anti-theists here; if believers will just ignore them, there will be less rancor all around. Pray for them instead of taking offense at their words, and go on. If your faith has any foundation at all, it's not like the anti-theists are a threat to you.

Now, Muslims, on the other hand...

re: #664 Storm'n Norm'n

Norm, you must be one of those proud products of the public school system. You have managed to be more unintelligible than even tfk on his bad days... I can usually figure him out. He even makes sense once I do (in other words, I know what he is talking about). You, unfortunately, are both confused and confusing.

No, I am not a spelling/punctuation/grammar nazi. I'm not even a teacher. I am, however, someone who has already pegged you as not posting anything worth the time it takes to read, much less parse out.

Maybe if you slowed down, took your time and really thought out what you wanted to say, and then put some effort into communicating in English, you would have something to contribute.

Deep breaths, thoughts organized, THEN post, okay?

re: #665 buzzsawmonkey

Ok,
I'm a product of Dhimmitude education, So what. I'm also a very proud American, That has served my Country. And don't find a fault in those that believe or do so. I see nothing wrong with voting the Constitution ! And further believe the economic mess we are in. ( and it is a Mess ) Is going to no good. What would your answer bee, ? More credit to get further indebt ? with Chinese bond buy outs !

668 cookielady  Tue, Jan 1, 2008 8:26:53pm

re: #667 Storm'n Norm'n

Much better, you at least started out addressing a subject. No one said anything about dhimmitude; on the contrary, we were not discussing Islam at all. The government schools, however, do seem to manufacture a low-quality product, as evidenced by your apparent lack of ability to communicate on any intelligible level. Go back and read your post, Norm'n. Seriously, what are you trying to say? I see lots of exclamation points, so you are impassioned about whatever it is, but since you can't put it into words and sentences that make sense, I can't really interact with you.

One more time: if you were sitting here looking at me, and I said, "Norm, what would you like to explain to me so that I can see your point?", how would you talk to me? Just talk to me, calmly, and I'm sure I'll be able to figure out what you are trying to say.

You seem to think our economy is a mess. Okay, I get that opinion. Why? And how do you think it should be remedied?

What does it mean to 'vote the Constitution?' I've certainly never voted against it. I'm a strict constructionist regarding the Constitution.

In what capacity have you served? In the military? If so, my humble thanks, I appreciate you more than you know. In some other way?

Please don't spout catchphrases or repeat chunks of talking points. You will be steadfastly ignored, belittled, or marked as a troll. If you plan to post here, you MUST MAKE SENSE.

thanks for being so kind, Maybe to use to fighting, Yes a USMC vet. not of the current conflicts, Think back to the 80's And Panama. And yes. I'm doing very well, as is my dad, That also served in the USMC . Just some 40 years earlier. During Korea. As my Granddad did in WWI As an Army Vet To get his US citizenship, From Canada of all places.
Now with, That begin said. I've seen funerals. Bodies being buried, men I've served with. The kid next door that wanted to emulate me, As I was his best example , Of a grown up.
I fear, What may be apon, US. As I've said in the past. Don't like it ! But see no other outcome, There's nothing Civil About War !
My worsest fears, seem to be coming true, A melt down of the debt markets. Combined with the losest saving rate of any country, except Brazil, As there currencies failed.
And what that leads too.
I see it ! Many don't I refuse to profit, From it. Like betting against the value of a buck, Is stupid !
So we live with it, Betting some a lot worse than others !

A Marine! I love Marines! (don't tell Mr. Cookielady)

Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, for your service. Your family seems to have a proud tradition of serving our country, and you are obviously a patriotic person. You just need to take your time and think about what you really want to say, and what your point is, and then you will be able to make your positions clear when you post.

It's true that we have a poor savings percentage in this country--but that has nothing at all to do with the government and everything to do with individual Americans and their desire for more material things than they can afford. Credit allows you to live the way you would if you could afford it, LOL! It's true that our government leads the way in debt production, but how would you fix that? If you have concerns but no answers, how can you be of help?

I have my moments when I rail and rant about the way American society is headed, but unless I can come up with a solution, my yelling about it doesn't really help. True, we have drifted far from the original intent of many things in America, but the world has changed drastically over the last 200 years. Dr. Paul is so badly, fatally wrong in all aspects of his foreign policy ideas that I can't give his views any credence at all. We have a terrible enemy that wants us dead, and running home to hide won't save us from that enemy.

I'd like to stay longer, but I simply must go to bed now. Tomorrow is another day! Semper Fi, Norm, and remember to take it slow and easy and only post what you really want to say--maybe read what you have written out loud to yourself to make sure you've typed everything in black and white that went through your mind while you were writing.

re: #649 Orde

Are Ron Paul supporters faking a Mike Huckabee website (definitelynot a real Huckabee website) or is someone else doing it to make itappear as if they are? The so-called Mike Huckabee forumfalsely lists under "Endorsements - The following have endorsed MikeHuckabee and the Holy Crusade against Muslims": Bill Kristol, JewishTask Force, Jews for Muslimah Genocide, John Hagee, Fred Phelps, TimeMagazine, etc. At what point does satire become criminal?

Orde, that was interesting post. I searched the WHOIS for the domain name and I came up with Moniker.com, they can hide your own WHOIS so no one can find who it is...but the server is in Texas and the ISP provider is ThePlanet.com.

I dont know who has them...

It is understandable that his low polling numbers led to a pragmatic decision on the part of these networks to exclude him. I do believe though that for all of Ron Paul's many quirks that he is the most principled economic conservative on the Republican side. I think too that Republicans would do well to adopt a more conservative approach to Foreign Policy in the very general direction (think Comerica Park) of Ron Paul.

You'll probably never get this note, but, I' ve attended the Latin Mass in my town for 11 yrs. now.

The huge hole in that notion, though ... has he ever, ever, ever had any success creating legislation that furthered the cause of "principled economic conservativism"? It's always easy to be "pure" when one is simply posturing.
