French Calm As Cars Burn

Wed, Jan 2, 2008 at 1:31:27 pm PST

Things were pretty calm in Paris over New Year’s Eve—only 372 cars torched.

PARIS (Reuters) - Vandals torched 372 cars as France celebrated the New Year, down on the figure last year after a night the police described as “relatively calm.”

Cars are burned fairly regularly in France and the image of vehicles in flames in poor suburbs became symbolic of riots in 2005 when angry youths set fire to thousands of cars.

There is usually an increase in the number of cars torched on New Year’s Eve compared to other days of the year.

“The night was relatively calm, without notable incident, there were very few direct clashes with the security forces,” said a spokesman for the national police.

At 12:00 a.m. EST, the Interior Ministry said 372 vehicles had been burned — 144 in the Paris region and 228 in the rest of France. That was down from 397 last New Year’s Eve.

Is this a specific custom or a practice of a small minority?

What are Vandals? some form of Rock Group? Or are these torched 372 cars the work of a social problem?

The steps taken this year included limiting sales of petrol in cans. So, instead of going after the thugs who have repeatedly been involved in the hooliganism, rampaging riots, they cut gas sales.

Ignoring the problem doesn't make it go away. It just makes the violence the new normal.

Oh, and a few years ago, the nightly average for cars torched was about 40 nationwide in France. After the 2006 riots, that number jumped to an average of 100. It spikes on national holidays and yet no one seems all that concerned.

Perhaps because the police no longer go to areas where there can be a CLASH? That is certainly one way to cut down on conflict - appeasement through avoidance.

Police had stepped up their presence on French streets in anticipation of the year-end celebrations and the sale of petrol in cans was banned in some places.

"The night was relatively calm, without notable incident, there were very few direct clashes with the security forces"

I hope the same attitude doesn't carry on over to other crimes in France,such as rapes or murders. It's sad when seeing less of an amount of crime than you EXPECTED TO SEE is declared acceptable.

This unfortunately reminds me too much of the 30s when the average German started to accept greater and greater violence against the Jews. Too much acceptance of this sort of stuff in too small an area. Further, the impact of this on the economics of the areas effected is non-trivial. I certainly would not open shop there. And then we will hear the whine of Islamaphobia. Personally I think it is more Islamaflamable that causes the concern. If you want to stop this stuff, you have to simply play game theory. You raise the negative utility function to be so high that your opponent quits the game. Something that the west has yet to learn since WW 2.

So what is the negative utility function, here? For every car burned, one city block is closed to traffic? Or?

IIRC they demanded of course that the government "create" jobs. The idea of demanding that the government liberalize the economy so that the economy itself creates real jobs never occurs to them.

Man, I hate to defend the French. I'm really not a fan -- but Sarkozy is trying to do just that. I think the French are ruined, and yes it is their socialism and long-time anti-semitism that are two very real sources of their problems, but Sark and company are trying to turn things around. I wish them luck. No fat lady sightings, yet, but I can hear her singing in French, just around the corner. Hope that the Sark-man can overcome.

3. How can law abiding citizens continue to support a government that stands by while thugs burn their property and declare the results not to be a "notable incident" because "there were few direct clashes with the security forces"?

144 Idle Drifter  Wed, Jan 2, 2008 2:09:25pm

There is usually an increase in the number of cars torched on New Year’s Eve compared to other days of the year.

At 12:00 a.m. EST, the Interior Ministry said 372 vehicles had been burned — 144 in the Paris region and 228 in the rest of France. That was down from 397 last New Year’s Eve

I remember growing up in the Down River Area with Detroit just over the draw bridge spanning the Rouge River. The two most interesting nights of the year was Devil's Night (Oct 30 night to Oct 31 morning) and New Years. Devil's night kids were arrested for being out past curfew(6 pm or sun set), police units went up and down streets and alleys with spot lights, and the aftermath could be seen on the morning news. New Years always went off with drunken assholes shooting their guns off into the air. It got so bad a couple years mom insisted us kids sleep on the floor in the living room while mom and dad stayed up untill the idiots stopped celebrating. After awhile the fires shrank in number and any idiot on New Years shooting his gun off drew an instant police response. Though the incedents have shrunk in number the citizen volunteers and police presence hasn't.

So, how the heck to does it make any sense to randomly destroy cars, when one is "angry"?

"Anger" is, at most, a feeble excuse. The riots in Villiers-Le-Bel, triggered by two Yutes crashing into a police car while speeding on a stolen motorcycle, were organized by "grands frères", bearded Muslims in their forties ordering the Yutes around. In other words, the "spontaneous riot" was planned in advance, just waiting for an excuse.

What those torching are doing is driving the non-Muslims out of those areas. I expect those areas to declare their independence, à la Kosovo, with support from the U.S. and the E.U., in the next few years.

How did that happen? Where were the owners of those cars? iN the house hiding under the bed?

Homeboy's cars do not get torched because the homeboy will "nine" you for it. No one is going to torch your car if they think you will come out and shoot you. However, if you KNOW that the owner is unarmed AND afraid, then what's stopping you?

I remember the Citroen being designed for practicality, not style. For its time, it had some whiz-bang technology (like hydraulic wheel lifts). I used to own a Volvo (had 2 small children and my wife was very protective) and the Citroen was considered almost as safe.

Of course, the Volvo was a piece of sh*t, and kept breaking down. Next few cars were Japanese (Honda, Lexus). No complaints.

And I also learned that the Citroen was a Jewish-owned car company. I almost bought one...

The media thought it was a great joke and the Mehari-hater became something of a folk hero. Then a bystander was killed when a burning Mehari suddenly exploded. The manhunt was on after that. The maniac was eventually captured and locked away in a mental hospital.

The Netherlands had a "reasonable quiet" New Year's Eve. too.

Damages so far: 11 million Euro's, and I presume still counting.

[Link: www.expatica.com...]

AMSTERDAM - Massive celebrations, fires, riots and extreme fog characterised the Dutch New Year's festivities.

...A police spokesman said Tuesday there was more fist- fighting and rioting in many cities than in previous years, particularly in Amsterdam.

snip

In The Hague, the military police had to control rioters, while in Utrecht, in the centre of the country, the police were understaffed and unable to control the situation.

Dozens of cars went up in flames and rioters threw fireworks at civil guards.

In Rozenburg, also in the south, 30 people were arrested after rioting near a mall.

A police spokesman said on Tuesday that a record number of buildings went up in flames during the night in the Netherlands.

[Link: kleinverzet.blogspot.com...]

The most ridiculous "incident":

"A police station in Amsterdam was attacked last night by 'youths'. Result: broken windows, three police cars burned and of course no arrest were made. But that's just standard Dutch deescalation policy. Just like the last time when this same police station was attacked by a suicide terrorist."

Good grief: armed policemen sitting in their own police station, being attacked by a mob of teenage Moroccans armed with fireworks, allowing their windows to get smashed in and their patrol cars to get torched. No arrests!

What did they do, hide under their desks? Oh, they did call the riot police, who came but "took no action". WTF?

Meanwhile the establishment is desperately trying to get the genie back in the bottle by admonishing the population (guess which part) to show tolerance and respect.

Prominent Dutch call for more tolerance and respect in 2008 on the cover of Trouw on Wednesday.

[Link: www.expatica.com...]

However, the lone voice of reason (supported by an ever increasing part of the natives) had this to say:

Freedom party faction leader Geert Wilders wants nothing to do with the group. He says those who are behind the action are "foolish and naïve." Wilders also called them "dhimmis", a word used to refer to non-Muslims who act submissive towards Muslims out of fear.

"Islam does not deserve respect, but must be fiercely battled as an intolerant and fascist ideology," the MP said in a reaction on Wednesday.

By the way, our Justice Department is looking into the possibility to stop Wilders from showing his movie on the Koran. Free speech, anyone?

My Honda mechanic works in a garage complex. Two bays down from him is my old Volvo mechanic. The Honda guy bought a new Volvo convertible (don't know the exact model), about 2 years ago. His wife really really wanted one. After buying it, he spent about two thousand dollars in parts for stabilizing bars. Then it spent a lot of time visiting the Volvo mechanic, for various reasons. He just sold it. Both he and the wife are reportedly very happy to be rid of it.

I wanted to love the Volvo. It was impossible.

American Airlines Flight 587 departed Runway 31L at John F. Kennedy Airport in New York at 9:13am local time on a flight to Santo Domingo, Dominican Republic. Approximately three minutes later, while climbing through 2,800 feet and executing the left turn on the standard departure procedure away from Brooklyn, radar contact was lost with the aircraft. Witnesses reported seeing an engine fire develop on the aircraft's no.1 engine, followed by small pieces of debris breaking away from the left wing, and shortly afterward, a complete separation of the left engine from the aircraft's wing. The aircraft then reportedly entered a steep nose-down attitude and crashed into the borough of Queens near Rockaway Beach, destroying four residential structures, and severely damaging eight others. Separation of the vertical stabilizer, which was found over two miles away from the main impact site in Jamaica Bay, is suspected as the precipitating event, leading to an in-flight breakup of the aircraft.

Great swaths of Washington, DC our capital city were burned out--just blocks from the White House-- during the 1968 riots following the assasination of Martin Luther King. It was 40 years before taxpaying citizens returned these areas to life & profitability from crime & desolation.

418 Sunlight  Wed, Jan 2, 2008 3:38:59pm

This is a perfect example for the "meaning of white" thread previously. Why could we (i.e. rather the French in this case, but in general, we in countries who don't think this kind of "behavior" is ok) take video and round up people who are burning cars (against the law). Send the army if necessary to face them down as criminals. Send them single file past a judge, sentence them to a corral or a remote island work facility until they work off the cost of replacement cars plus punitive damages. Rather than going for the "white Europe" (or anywhere else) cleansing of all in a certain group? Give them the strong view that laws are to be complied with in this country (or EU) and consequences aren't easy. If people don't want to comply, let them know that no one will stop them from finding a country that better fits what they want to do. But here, we don't burn cars. Start just with that even.

Car payments are unnecessary for ANYONE. Period.

If you can scrounge $3,000 for a used corolla and keep $500 in the bank for parts, you can log another 100k miles until it's time to pay cash for a new one.

the car payment savings alone for most people would pay for retirement.

By the way, our Justice Department is looking into the possibility to stop Wilders from showing his movie on the Koran.

Do tell.

Wilders is working on a short movie about the "less peaceful" parts of the Koran and how the book inspires today's Muslims to Jihad and assorted violent acts. Guess what, Dutch Muslims unhappy (implying already that they will not be able to control their "upset and insulted" youths), Dutch lefties unhappy, establishment unhappy, etc.

The police are already "holding talks with imams and other leaders from within the Muslim community regarding Wilders' movie with an eye to limiting the violence on the street. Plans have been made regarding large-scale disturbances for Amsterdam The Hague and Utrecht. (Good idea, tell the Muslims what your plans are to combat their youths, so they can instruct them accordingly!)

The movie is supposed to air on January 25, (a Friday!) on national televison during the air time allotted Wilders' political party, the PVV. (That means that probably all the networks etc. were too cowardly to show it!)

The Justice Department is examining the feasibility of preventing the movie from being shown.

It is truly amazing how much sh*t people can get accustomed to. They can live in communist blockhouses under terrible oppression with hopeless lives. They can live behind veils under sharia. They can put up with cars burning by hoodlums who are the offspring of immigrants that the society never wanted to accept but were foisted upon them by a corrupt and self-serving government. Yet they continue to live without rising up and saying non!

The willingness of people to put with cr*p and get used to more and more of it plays right into the hands of Islamists and Muslim thugs. Where's the outrage? The West needs just an ounce of Muslim rage to get off its *ss and put a stop to Islamist insanity and Muslim thuggery.

Saudi Authorities Detain Popular Blogger
1/2/08

RIYADH, Saudi Arabia — Saudi authorities have detained a popular blogger for violating the kingdom's laws, a senior Interior Ministry official said Tuesday. It was the first known arrest of a Saudi online critic.

The blogger, Fouad al-Farhan, was being questioned by security authorities, Interior Ministry spokesman Maj. Gen. Monsour al-Turki said. He added the blogger might be released on Wednesday but did not elaborate.

The Saudi English daily, Arab News, said al-Farhan had "violated non-security regulations." The paper said the 32-year-old Jeddah resident was arrested at his office Dec. 10 and taken to his home where police conducted a search. There were no other details.

Al-Farhan's family has contacted the governmental Human Rights Commission, asking for help in the case, the paper said.
Al-Farhan is one of the few bloggers who uses his real name. His blog headline reads: "Searching for freedom, dignity, justice, equality, shoura and all the rest of lost Islamic values." Shoura is Arabic for public consultation.

Following the arrest, al-Farhan's friends who are now running his Web site, posted a letter allegedly from the blogger claiming he was told by an official there was an Interior Ministry order "to investigate me and they will pick me up anytime in the next two weeks."

In it, he also said he believed Saudi authorities were after him because he "wrote about political prisoners in Saudi Arabia."
Al-Farhan added that officials asked him to sign an apology but that he wasn't ready to do that.

"An apology for what? Apologizing because I said the government is liar when it accused those people of supporting terrorism," he said.
Another Saudi blogger, Ahmad Al-Omran, told Arab News that al-Farhan's arrest could have been an attempt to intimidate other bloggers.

In Charlotte. Hoping to get out of the paint booth late next month. LOTS of welding done so far.. Despite having a wonderful engine and transmission, in retrospect, it would have been a likely candidate for a parts car.

So.. that will make it even more special when I'm done. The 1800 that SHOULD have been junked, economically speaking!

I've literally bled on this car too much to let her go, however.

mostly original, with a few "mods." ported and polished head w/ 3-angle valve job. Just enough spunk to put a smile on my face when I drop the hammer. It's heavy and it's 2 litres, but it handles like on a rail (added some sway bars and shocks).

What's the difference? Any policy of fiercely enforcing all laws and jailing offenders for a long time, or deporting them, amounts to the same thing as ethnic cleansing. Just look at the stats on crime rates broken down by ethnic groups and the conclusion is unavoidable.

Since ethnic cleansing is wrong, and any suggestion that it should be accomplished by other means is beyond the pale, the only moral conclusion is that France must limit the application of laws against arson to persons who pray fewer than five times daily. Others must be exempt. This entails a certain level of, say, unorthodox contributions to global warming, but the French can just buy more cars, libraries, and police stations as needed. There is no other morally acceptable choice.

Vast majority of people don't go at it in the smartest ways though...
Waaay back in the late 80's I got into real estate for a while and told a relative how to pay off her 30 year mortgage in about half the time... never listened and payed of the 30 year debt in thirty years...

Also, by financing rather than allowing for what folks can pony up in cash, irrespective of the object (car, house, washing machine etc) being bought, allows the sellers to up the price because the market is artificially inflated by financing options that keep allowing for creeping up the cost until we have the odd bust in the market...

Yet our government mainly talk and deal in millions, whereas you are casually talking billions. wow - your nation must be really really prosperous and I class myself as being a fairly well educated Brit. Truly your figures for the war on terror are staggering to me.

Isn't there a huge mosque project ($bil) in London, too? You're also prosperous. And don't forget it! ;-)

My Dad was co-owner of one of these. Dad was heavily into the sports car racing and on-road rally scene when he was home in the late 50's through early 60's. I'm not sure of which of the five he was involved with though, I think it was either #3 or #5.

When GM corporate pulled the plug on the '63 GS Vette's, Dad quickly traded his share of that for one of these.

A little over a year later, I was almost born in the back seat of that big ol Merc. My Mom learned how to drive in it, but hated it. After Dad died in '89, Mom paid some junk man to drag the car away.

The 11 th Husband...

A young man married a beautiful woman who had previously divorced 10 husbands. On their wedding night, she told her new husband to "Please be gentle; I'm still a virgin".

"What?" said the puzzled groom.
"How can that be if you've been married ten times.?"

"Well, husband#1 was a Sales Representative;
he kept telling me how great it was going to be.

"Husband # 2 was in Software Services;
he was never really sure how it was suppose to function;
but he said he'd look into it and get back with me.

"Husband # 3 was from Field Services;
he said that everything checked out diagnostically
but he just couldn't get the system up.

"Husband # 4 was inTelemarketing;
even though he knew he had the order,
he didn't know when he would be able to deliver.

"Husband # 5 was an Engineer,
he understood the basic process but he wanted
three years to research, implement, and design a
new state of the-art method.

"Husband #6 was from Administration;
he thought he knew how but he wasn't sure whether
it was his job or not.

"Husband # 7 was in Marketing;
although he had a product, he was never sure how
to position it.

"Husband # 8 was a Psychiatrist;
all he did was talk about it.

"Husband # 9 was a Gynecologist;
all he did was look at it.

"Husband # 10 was a Stamp Collector;
all he ever did was... God I miss him.

" But now that I've married you, I'm so excited".

"Wonderful", said the husband, "but why?

"You're with the "GOVERNMENT"..
This time I KNOW I'm gonna get
SCREWED ."

Free Market monkey sex...
Cost of coitus: Male monkeys pay for sex

Selling sex is said to be humankind's oldest profession but it may have deep evolutionary roots, according to a study into our primate cousins which found that male macaques pay for intercourse by using grooming as a currency.
...
Market forces also acted on the value of the transaction.

If there were several females in the area, the cost of buying sex would drop dramatically -- a male could "buy" a female for just eight minutes of nit-picking.

But if there were no females around, he would have to groom for up to 16 minutes before sex was offered.

Science!

'bout you avatar, I just about squished a 1800 wagon one day. Driving the engine, full lights and sirens, on a four lane road. I'm in the left travel lane for my direction. Up ahead is an 1800 sitting in a driveway waiting to pull out. Cars are pulling into the right lane like they should. Just as we get to the driveway the 1800 pulls out, instead of into the right lane he couldn't pull in there traffic is stopping for me and my big red all light up noisy as hell engine. He pulls into the left lane. RIGHT IN FRONT OF ME. So close I can't see him under the hood. I brace for the "crunch" but nothing. He pulls into view out from under the hood. Couldn't have missed him by more than a couple of inches, I really don't know how I did missed him buy I did. Everytime I see an 1800 I have visions of him disappearing under my hood.

After a two-and-a-half day siege, Russian OSNAZ forces pumped an unknown chemical agent into the building's ventilation system and raided it. Officially, 39 of the terrorists were killed by Russian forces, along with at least 129 of the hostages (nine of them foreigners). Reginald Denny.

I remember watching in horror as Denny was dragged out of his vehicle and attacked. They would slam a brick into his head and dance around in joy. I don't recall much happening to Denny's attackers. Apparently some juries felt they were justified due to their ghetto up-bringing...
We couldn't believe this was happening in America.

It was the same with PC Blakelock here in the UK - stunned everyone. I cant say my feelings only shock, sick, disgust so wanting for these people to be brought to justice and they never were.

I have no idea how to post links here to show you the story. Perhaps you could instruct me please.. Thanks

Its not hard. Go to the site you want to link to and highlight the entry in the address bar in the tool bar at top. Hit the control and C key at the same time. This will copy the address you have highlighted. Then go to your LGF entry, type your stuff in, then do hit the control and V key at the same time. This will paste the copied address into your post. Enjoy!

From the link:

Togay Bayalti, president of the National Olympic Committee of Turkey, said: "This will be difficult for Muslim athletes.

"They don't have to observe Ramadan if they are doing sport and travelling but they will have to decide whether it is important to them.

This is just another whine and seethe fest for the sake of whining and seething since Muslims are not required to fast if they are doing sports.

Then there's this Muslim who says:

Massoud Shadjareh, chairman of the London-based Islamic Human Rights Commission, said: "They would not have organised this at Christmas. It is equally stupid to organise it at Ramadan.

I guess this guy never watched the NFL. He goes on to say:

"It's not only going to affect the participants it's going to affect all the people who want to watch the Games.

"They won't want to travel during Ramadan and they won't want to watch sport. It's a spiritual time

We all know how spiritual suicide bombing is, so not a problem during Ramalamdingdong.

I get the impression from a lot of people here that Sarkozy is thought to be the savior of France from itself. I am quite certain that is a pipe dream for those prone to wishful thinking. France is too far down the socialist road to turn back before it collapses under the weight of it's socialist mindset, which pervades every thread of the fabric of their culture.

When people riot for the government to manufacture them jobs, they simply have no concept of how an economy works, and have no desire to actually participate in a real economy. They want more money, not a job. There's a difference.

I believe Pol-Pot was a great exponent of the solution to people who may not want what the government wants, and it's punishment for whoever is not it's 'model-citizen'

LA, I agree. Irvine is much more worrisome.

re: #510 mdaspinall

I just saw the link to a story in the Daily Mail where some want the NHS to cut off smokers, fatties and drunks from receiving health benefits.

I am wondering if this happens, will these folks get a tax refund?

Of course not. But think it through: there are only so many hours in the day, and only so many people who have what it takes to be doctors. Below a certain floor competence, awarding medical degrees to those who don't understand medicine just creates more emergencies than it cures. The same goes for ER nurses, EMI-capable personnel, and so forth.

On top of that, society cannot function in any other area if all the top talent is required in the medical profession. So, one way or another, medical care is going to be rationed.

We ration medical care by price first, and by imposing long waits and unpleasant runarounds, secondly. This has its downside, but the upside is that many people think through what good they can expect to gain by visiting a doctor about a cold or a simple cut, and how much it would cost, and decide to handle the situation themselves, gutting it out, putting some over the counter ointment on it and bandaging themselves up, etc. This frees up resources for the more seriously ill.

In Britain, they ration care by age, they ration it by deliberately not buying the latest and best equipment, and they will be rationing it by denying care to those whose medical problems are the result of their own long term decision to run risks with their health. The big drinker, the big eater, the guy who rides a motorcycle without wearing a helmet; all figure to be bumped way down in the queue.

There cannot BE any such thing as free health care on the all-you-can-eat, buffet plan, with plenty of caviar and frog legs and salmon and truffles and brandy heaped on the table. It'll either be all-you-can-eat swill, or all-you-can-eat [except for catch 22], or pay up if you want more than the basic canned spam and rice.

France burns and England gets toasted. What is up with Europe?

614 Wishbone  Thu, Jan 3, 2008 3:47:08am

re: #612 lostlakehiker

Just a minor point of interest, but the guy who doesn't wear his motorcycle helmet while riding gets bumped right into a police car. Riding without a lid has been illegal for a long time here mate, with good reason.

The vast majority of riders, myself included, wouldn't be too impressed with someone riding on British roads without a helmet.

Flesh versus road: Road wins every time.

re: #613 Noah's Arrrgh

There's nothing 'Euoropean' about the drinking culture in Britain, trust me. Even the Euro's are aghast at the alcoholic excess that we seem frighteningly capable of as a nation. I'd go so far as to say that we could actually do with embracing a bit of European culture where our attitudes to alcohol consumption are concerned.

Of the many things that our government could do to try and alleviate what is very much a British cultural problem, the best idea they've come up with yet is : 24 hour licensing.

Go figure.

616 Wolfman  Thu, Jan 3, 2008 5:28:46am

Seriously? One car burns in Detroit after the '84 World Series, and the country labels us as "violent" (which we are, but not for burning cars. Sheesh)

372 cars burn in Paris and that's "relatively calm"?

On a related note, I wonder if Paris had to buy more carbon offsets.

617 Joel  Thu, Jan 3, 2008 6:06:18am

Auto insurance rates in the Paris suburbs must be hellish.

I never get an answer when I ask: what do Muslims have against motor vehicles?

As soon as some mooslem "scholar" declares Mohamadan "invented" the cars as was predicted in the koran, they will stop burning them.

619 RobCon  Thu, Jan 3, 2008 11:48:16am

"At 12:00 a.m. EST, the Interior Ministry said 372 vehicles had been burned — 144 in the Paris region and 228 in the rest of France. That was down from 397 last New Year’s Eve."

Forget Iraq, I think we have finally turned the corner in France.
