RealClearPolitics is tracking the Iowa Caucuses.

Looks like Huckabee vs. Romney, and Obama vs. Clinton.

6 daledog  Thu, Jan 3, 2008 12:45:53pm

I sure hope that Rudy's gamble pays off. I'm not excited about either of the two leading Repubs.

7 zombie  Thu, Jan 3, 2008 12:46:11pm

Iowa and NH have early-fied themselves out of relevance.

All this will affect is a little boost in the polls for a few candidates. The overall tenor of the election will remain unchanged.

Clinton v. Giuliani. Bank on it.

8 The Pulchritudinous Patriot  Thu, Jan 3, 2008 12:46:14pm

Wonderful. Is this going to be a Bob Dole situation all over again?

I hope Giuliani is strong in other states. I will not vote for Romney Or Huckabee.

Take 'em for what they're worth: Iowa predictions -

I'm going to go with Obama winning the caucus for the Democrats. Edwards will take second and Hillary a very disappointing third with Richardson taking fourth by a very narrow margin. Romney will win for the GOP. Huckabee will take second by a narrow margin with McCain sliding into third. Fred Thompson will take fourth, but the surprise will be how strong Rudy will do in Iowa given his paucity of campaigning there. Ron Paul will be a nonfactor.

13 insanity police  Thu, Jan 3, 2008 12:47:12pm

There is nothing so important about Iowa that they should get to go first. Absolutely nothing!

I haven't been following the details, but it looks like Rudy mostly ignored Iowa, in preference of running a national campaign. He doesn't really need the iowa delegates to win the nomination. Nor does he need the publicity mini-boost that winning Iowa would bring. He's operating on a larger scale.

26 lawhawk  Thu, Jan 3, 2008 12:49:19pm

As for Hillary, she was hoping to have a strong showing, and the fact that they're already stage managing and pre-spinning her results suggests one of two things - she's strong in second, in which case they're trying to boost her figures to show momentum going forward, or she's really in serious trouble and they're trying to get the damage control parties activated. I think it is the latter, but as others have pointed out, this is still way too early to discount any of the big names. Things will sort out after the first of the big state primaries.

An editorial I can agree with:

Washington Post columnist David Broder joined the attack, saying the peculiar procedures in Iowa favored conservative Christian and anti-abortion groups among Republicans and organized labor among Democrats who were best organized and able to get their members to the caucuses.
The result, he wrote, was "a double distortion mirror."

Editorials say Iowa too unrepresentative

This is funny:

Ron Paul’s Supporters Rally in the World of Warcraft

WanderingGoblin reports on a successful Ron Paul rally–in the virtual World of Warcraft.

The rally went a bit better than expected. The number of Ron Paul followers that appeared were appreciable.

The rally actually caused a queue on Whisperwind of more than 300 players waiting to log in.

They filled five raids with Ron Paul supporters. At 40 per raid, that was more than 200 people.

Various guildmates threw out different figures. One said that 200+ people had shown up. Another said the number was 240, another said 250 or more.

The march ended in Orgrimmar, with (presumably) the mass slaughter of the marchers at the hands of their Horde enemies. No word on how Ron Paul felt about this horrific tragedy.

Teenager strangled by father

Police and ambulance crews rushed to the Stevens St, Pennant Hills townhouse in Sydney's northwest, arriving to find the girl unconscious and her father dead.

Distraught neighbours last night said the evening calm was shattered by the mother's distraught screams.

"The scream was heard down the street. It was horrible," one neighbour said.

It is understood the family were originally from Iran and had signed a two-year lease on the property three months ago.

Watched about 3 minutes of the tape. All the targets were stationary at 600 meters which is not a good test for something I would assume is designed to be primarily an anti- aircraft gun. Second point the first round always tended to be high and the gun compensated to bring it back down to what I am assuming is the point of aim.
I would need to see how this gun does against moving targets, what does the ammunition magazine look like, how is it loaded and can jams be cleared easily or does it take the gun off line for an extended period. In other words I have more questions then answers.

Thank you. I tend to defer to the genius of the Founders. If we divided the Electors into 3 classes and gave them 6 year terms like Senators then we could eliminate this game show nonsense. Retail politics has it's place, at the local level. Local state legislatures should select the Electors, probably from a list of retired Judges, Governors and "Leading citizens" meaning Billionaires. The Federal government should keep busy locking up state legislators for corruption. That has to be a better system than what we have.

On one hand, you are correct, no matter what happens, iowa will likely go democrat anyway when the real election goes down.

on the other hand, it may not be too much of a stretch to say that some people may view Rudy's (more or less) ignoring of Iowa of a sign that, to him, the 'flyover country' people don't matter to him.

Ok, mil lizards. I need some feedback. I'm looking at bringing Bofors into Canada (and by extension the US).

They have the tried and true 40mm, but were you guys aware of the new 57mm?

In speaking with my mil Canadian friends, this is what they need right now. It's a big dollar deal, but i think Bofors is reliable.

Feedback from vets (please!)?

Watched about 3 minutes of the tape. All the targets were stationary at 600 meters which is not a good test for something I would assume is designed to be primarily an anti- aircraft gun. Second point the first round always tended to be high and the gun compensated to bring it back down to what I am assuming is the point of aim.
I would need to see how this gun does against moving targets, what does the ammunition magazine look like, how is it loaded and can jams be cleared easily or does it take the gun off line for an extended period. In other words I have more questions then answers.

Meant to repy to #76 -- sorry on phone.

The upshot is these people are not, ahem, contributing their DNA to the rest of the gene pool.

As speculation intensifies in Iowa about whether Bill Richardson will ask his supporters to back Obama on the second ballot tonight, the New Mexico governor made a potentially Freudian slip in a morning interview on CNN. Asked to defend his opposition to waterboarding of detainees in US custody, Richardson gave a slightly rambling answer that referred to Pakistani president Pervez Musharraf as a "terrorist".

The Soviets had a 57mm anti aircraft gun mounted on a tracked vehicle chasis, ZSU-57-2 (it had 2 barrels). Even back in the 80's and 90's our guys weren't too afraid of it. Slow rate of fire, accuracy issues and as with all things Soviet human comfort wasn't on the list. I don't know a single barrel version of this gun would work. It might be okay mounted on the deck of ship for engaging other naval vessels but like I said until I see it in action against a moving target color me unimpressed.

Yes and the bien passents forget the psychological role of artillery. My solution to Fallujah would have been lining up 200 artillery tubes and very slowly marching a line of fire from north to south. We no longer have any ground tubes over 6" and the Navy has nothing over 5". The Navy after planning it for almost 30 years should build some ships with 6" guns, maybe.

Cue Ride of the Valkyries.

Just say "Kill da Wabbit." We don't know nuthin about no Valka-whatevers.

My kids heard Ride of the Valkyries in a concert performance, later informing me that it was the music from Bugs Bunny.

OMG that's funny!
I like the one where Bugs dresses up as Leopold Stokowski (sic) and snaps his baton in half.

Because 60 years ago people in America with a regular High School education could understand jokes about classical music and were part of Western Civilization.

A sample of The Rude Pundit's Rudeness on Iowa (cleaned up to be work safe; for complete uncensored version with profanity go here):

1/03/2008
Can't Wait to Hear What the White People of Iowa Have to Say:
There's many, many reasons to despise the Iowa caucus. Gail Collins and Christopher Hitchens have covered the *expletive* of the entire process, a backwards ass *expletive* of meetings where about 10-15% of the voting *expletive*s of Iowa - who, we are constantly told, are kind, decent, thoughtful people, really, it's true - drink coffee, eat donuts or homemade brownies (because decent, kind farm folk make their own *expletive* brownies, you urban *expletive*s), and talk about who should be their party's nominee, voting until there's a winner in the room.

This comes after months and months of what can only be described as a kind of competitive brainwashing that enriches the local TV and radio stations (most of which are owned by giant corporations elsewhere), and makes the residents, the 90% or so of voters who don't give a flea's fart about the caucus, dread going to a downtown diner for the gut-wrenching fear they might be forced to shake hands with some [darn] Romney or Clinton. And the increasingly desperate-for-a-story media, who will hype anything, including the latest security cam video of a purse snatching or Paris Hilton's [privates], treat this like it's Sparta versus Athens.
...
See, the Rude Pundit's problem with Iowa is one of demographics. Iowa's white, so very, very white, 91% white. 2.5% black, 3.8% Hispanic (not counting the number of illegal migrants who harvest in those archetypal farms). In other words, Iowa ain't us. The attention to the Iowa caucus is based on a myth of America, a lie that hasn't existed in decades, maybe even a century or two. It is a vestige of the rightness of whiteness. It ain't about the way that good, decent, hard-working blah-blah-blah American citizens think. It's about what that isolated island of white people says.
...
Essentially, the whole nation is now forced to wait to see what the *expletive*s of Iowa have to say. It's like everyone gathering around the Thanksgiving table and when stroke-victim Grandma starts to slurringly, slurpingly speak, the rest of the family grows silent to hear what she thinks of the meal. And if you agree with Grandma just because she's Grandma, *expletive*, then the Iowa caucus might be meaningful to you. But if you nod and smile and say, "That's fine, Grandma. Pass the gravy," then you are ready to grow up.

I really hope this is the last time Iowa and New Hampshire have such a huge influence on the early momentum. The caucuses are a joke, especially the Dem version with 72 pages of rules.

I like the idea of small states leading off, so underdogs can prectice retail politics and make an impact without huge amounts of money. But they really should rotate the small states around in the early slots. How about Rhode Island and West Viginia next time?

Teenager strangled by father

Police and ambulance crews rushed to the Stevens St, Pennant Hills townhouse in Sydney's northwest, arriving to find the girl unconscious and her father dead.

Distraught neighbours last night said the evening calm was shattered by the mother's distraught screams.

"The scream was heard down the street. It was horrible," one neighbour said.

It is understood the family were originally from Iran and had signed a two-year lease on the property three months ago.

I haven't been following the details, but it looks like Rudy mostly ignored Iowa, in preference of running a national campaign. He doesn't really need the iowa delegates to win the nomination. Nor does he need the publicity mini-boost that winning Iowa would bring. He's operating on a larger scale.

Same with Fred.

Giuliani may have done great in NYC, Romney may be a successful businessman, McCain served his country, but it all pales when compared to what to many must be Huckabee enviable achievement.

He lost over a hundred pounds and kept it off.

Win.

Good run for Fred, if it holds up third place is fine and puts in place to blow them out in some future state, not sure which one tho.

258 Ceemack  Thu, Jan 3, 2008 6:38:04pm

Good lord. The GOP caucus-goers have apparently voted for Huckabee.

I read an article about a group of Iowans who had decided a while back to vote for Huckabee. They had finally heard about what he stood for, besides "God," and they were starting to have doubts. "What about all those taxes he raised?" "What about that in-state tuition that he gave for illegal aliens?" The group came up with excuses for each of Hucakbee's misdeeds. These imbeciles never even gave thought to supporting somebody else.

This is just proof that Iowa shouldn't be allowed to have the first primary. In fact, it proves they shouldn't be allowed to have primaries at all.

You said it. What the hell is it about Arkansas, anyway? As a nation, are we reduced to drafting our leaders from Arkansas? Sheesh!

Lots of Huckabee haters on tonight.

Me, I will save my hate for Clinton, Edwards and Obama.

Go Fred

re: #45 Charles

Some people were predicting Paul would beat Thompson, but it sure doesn't look that way. McCain and Thompson are tied behind Huckabee and Romney.

Heh ... oh wow - who were those 'some people' ?

Separately -- did you notice Dick Morris left Fred out entirely in yesterday's column he wrote describing what he thought each candidate needed this evening? Hehe, lol ... he really hates Thompson.

262 Crimsonfisted  Thu, Jan 3, 2008 6:40:58pm

oh WOW, FOX just flashed actually numbers, not percentages. Obama's vote - 720 people., which is 35% 4000 voted for Ron Paul for 11%! The turnout by the Republicans is something compared to the Dems.

I don't wish to speak for others but I wonder if it's not so much that there are Huckabee haters here as disbelief that any Republican could cast a vote for this man who is no conservative and in fact would be a horrible choice for a candidate. It's as if the majority of Republican voters in Iowa can't see beyond one or two issues when making their selection which proves very frustrating for anyone looking at the big picture. Of course I could be wrong...

re: #264 Sleepyone

In a field where there are no standouts many view the primaries as sort of a horse race and want most to look smart for having supported the candidate who won. So they stay undecided and watch the odds and eventually place a late bet.

Well its either that or the Chuck Norris endorsement.

Why does Iowa get the firs caucus anyway? What's so important about Iowa?

I'm not Iowa bashing, I just want to know.

I agree. Isn't it normally a flyover state?

/with apologies to iowahawk

Shouldn't the states be allowed to do as they wish? No one has to pay the slightest attention to Iowa, who doesn't choose to. I'm not sure I'd care at all who goes first. Who do you think should be ahead of Iowa, and why?

Ward Cleaver -- in what state do you reside?

268 GeekInGoodyear  Thu, Jan 3, 2008 7:37:24pm

Looks like the Iowa voters actually paid attention to the real record of the candidates and not the spin from the media. All the Huckabee haters and Romney lovers are just in lock-step with conservative pundits who have been pushing Romney. I would rate GOP candidates in this race from most to least conservative in this order (IMO): Paul*, Hunter, Huckabee, Thompson, McCain, and Romney.

*very conservative, accept for the three or four issues where he is insane.

Maybe now the sheeple who haven't been paying attention will start to think for them selves, get over Romney, and move on to picking an honest conservative. Of course NH is very liberal, so Romeny may still win there, but after that he's definitely toast. Michigan will alos be a big loss for him in spite of the fact his father was governor there. Of course most of you here won't believe that because you drank the Romney Kool-Aid being dispensed at all the "conservative" pundits.

re: #268 GeekInGoodyear

Oh, for heaven's sake. What are you, from Iowa?

How do you define "conservative"? If a candidate says he's pro-life, is that enough for you? By your definition, a candidate can support high taxes, the expansion of government, and the coddling of illegal aliens and still be a conservative as long as he swears that he's pro-life and believes in God.

One third of my "hating" of Huckabee has to do with the fact that he's basically clueless. He thought the writer's strike was settled, for Pete's sake. He claimed that Pakistan is the #1 source of illegal aliens outside of Latin America, and he wasn't even close. He said Musharraf was running for re-election, when in fact he was re-elected last fall.

The Republican field contains four men who by their temperaments, policy positions and records in public office would make them excellent presidents: Giuliani, Romney, Thompson, and Hunter. No, Ron Paul and Mike Huckabee don't make that list. Giuliani, Thompson and Romney would make great candidates in the general (I like Hunter, but don't think he could win in November).

The Democrats are positively salivating at the thought of Huckabee getting the GOP nomination, because except for Ron Paul he'd be the worst candidate the Republicans could nominate. Hell, I'm not even sure I could vote for Huckabee. 2008 might actually see me abstain from the presidential election.

It tells you a lot about Iowa that the two worst major candidates in either party--Edwards and Huckabee--won the state.
