Muslims Enraged, Seething at Wikipedia

Mon, Feb 4, 2008 at 11:05:25 am PST

Apparently there are a whole lot of Muslims enraged and offended at Wikipedia, because there are ... gasp ... drawings and images of Mohammed in his Wikipedia entry.

Blasphemy!

So they’re demanding that Wikipedia stop violating their delicate sensibilities and remove the offending images, with an online petition that’s already gathered 82,783 signatures: Care2 : The Petition Site : Removal of the Pics.

The petition has a little “lolcats” flavor to it.

Removal of the Pics of Muhammad from Wikipedia
Target:To tell wikipedia editors to respect other peoples religion
Sponsored by: Faraz Ahmad

In Islam pictures or Prophet Muhammad (PBUH) and other holly figures are not allowed, but on wikipedia they has published some pictures that are showing not only a body with white face but an image that has a complete face.. that is even not allowed by SHITAT fact of Islam.
i request all my brothers and sisters to sign this petition so we can tell wikipedia to remove them.

UPDATE at 2/4/08 11:32:39 am:

Good for Wikipedia on this one: Talk: Muhammad.

Please note that discussion on this talk page has determined that pictures of Muhammad will not be removed from this article and any removal of the pictures without discussion here first will be reverted on sight.

That makes them braver than 95% of the world’s media organizations.

(Hat tip: Wilderstad.)

There is a long Islamic tradition of representing Mohammed in art. The fact that the Wahabists don't like it (much as they are trying to destroy historical places in Saudi Arabia related to Mohammed) merely shows that they are trying to impose their strictures on all Islam.

What are they complaining about again? That a Persian Muslim created a depiction of Mohammed and Wikipedia dared to use it in their attempt to further knowledge? The horrors. THE HORRORS.

Wiki has said in essence tough beans. Bolding in quotes is mine.
[Link: en.wikipedia.org...]
Note what it says:
"Please note that discussion on this talk page has determined that pictures of Muhammad will not be removed from this article and any removal of the pictures without discussion here first will be reverted on sight."

And, if you click on the link of the Mohammed FAQ it also says this:
"Since Wikipedia is an encyclopedia with the goal of representing all topics from a neutral point of view, Wikipedia is not censored for the benefit of any particular group. Wikipedia will not remove content or images because people find them objectionable or offensive so long as the content or images are relevant to the article and does not violate any of the Wikipedia's existing policies, nor the law of the U.S. state of Florida, where Wikipedia's servers are hosted. "
" Accusations of bias towards western references are often made when an objection is raised against the display of pictures of Muhammad or lack of honorifics when mentioning Muhammad. All articles on Wikipedia are required to present a neutral point of view. This neutrality is sometimes mistaken for hostility."

49 amphibian  Mon, Feb 4, 2008 11:18:56am

Oh brudder. You drew these pictures of your f'ing pedophile mass-murdering prophet Mo (piss be upon him)! OK, so the drawings were from a more tolerant time. They show the scars of less tolerant times, when skill in draughtsmanship was suppressed, and thus lost, but at this time your own Muslim scribes, with a feeling of deepest reverence, drew their beloved prophet preaching. It's not Muhammed with a dog's body and it's not even Muhammed with a bomb in his turban!

How's about you just show the world how pissed-off you are by going into the desert somewhere and blowing yourselves up? It'll be a statement or something. Make sure that you do it away from people and I'll even contribute a firecracker.

This neutrality is sometimes mistaken for hostility."

Aha. You see, there is no neutrality in Islam.

To that collection of tribal warlords, you are subjugated, or dead, or in the process of either.

In their mindset, neutrality is hostility.

We had best learn this. Where that religion is concerned, coexistance and tolerance take on entirely different meanings than the hopeful Western fools use. They are synonyms for subjugated. To take either term at its Western-oriented face value is to court disaster, as the Islamists consider such compromise only as surrender and submission.

Said something similar to that, a while ago-

...........The islamic world is determined to establish a worldwide caliphate with domination of all others. This is no great secret. It is written about extensively by moslems around the world. It is preached in mosques every week throughout the moslem world. It can be seen in tapes of speeches, on international television, on the internet.

The desire for domination is a jealous one. It tolerates no other views. A Jewish State in Israel, Buddhist statues in Afghanistan, pork served at meals in British schools, synagogues and churches freely attended, women free to define their own lives, children free to learn all of the knowledge that our civilization has amassed; in the eyes of our enemies all the freedoms and rights we take for granted are anathema.

There is no compromise with this desire for domination.....

Tsk, tsk. How potentially embarassing. Perhaps he's the True Prophet of the Arabs, just no one else.

Along those lines, I sometimes wonder, despite my Christianity, if God is not having a great laugh by occasionally sending an angel to someone somewhere with a truly cock and bullsh&t story, just to see where it goes. It would explain many religious foibles and fumbles.

Actually, I took Art History 101 (didn't everyone), and IIRC, this picture is the first in a famous Persian triptych circa 875 AD. The next panel shows Mo in a cave with a goat retrieving a message from allah, and the final panel shows the followers in the first panel, without their heads, while Mo looks on approvingly. It's based on a Hadith or a Haggis, or something like that.

I keep forgetting, even when they give a reason for being offended, that reason has nothing to do with it. Their offense is a tool to make someone else give in.

Just like schizophrenics and others suffering from delusional disorders, they have an internal logice.

199 macduff  Mon, Feb 4, 2008 11:52:52am

Personally, I'm sick of coddling these infantile a-holes.

Christians didn't particularly like a crucifix in a jar of urine being called "art", and Catholics had the same reaction to a painting of the Virgin Mary plastered with cow dung. There have been innumerable desecrations of Christian icons in the name of "creativity" and freedom of expression and Christians become outraged (which is the intended reaction) and we all move on.

The rules of their religion apply to them, not me, and I refuse to be bound by them.

While, at some level I want to respect the beliefs of all - I do think that there should be an element of reciprocity. When I see that, I'll feel some sympathy. Until then, screw 'em.

I think I'll have a long wait - just like there is no crying in baseball, there is no reciprocity in Islam.

That this was done by a Christian artist would actually make some sense. The Middle-East (despite Islamic propaganda to the contrary) was home to many advanced civilizations before the Islamic invasions, and home to Jews, Zororastrians and, of course, Christians, who had achieved a high degree of artistic quality (think Byzantine icons, etc.)

re: #232 Occasional Reader

Joking
aside, the style of the art does suggest that it was done by a hired
Christian artist. Which gets very interesting, in that not only did the
Muslims of 5-6-700 years ago not have a problem with representations of
Mohammed, but apparently did not have a problem hiring/commanding
infidels or dhimmis to do them.

That may be why they had Christians do the painting - Mohammed commanded that his followers not depict him.

257 Sizzlack  Mon, Feb 4, 2008 12:09:38pm

Do offended Muslims not realize that these drawings were done a LONG time ago by other MUSLIMS?

Or is always the dirty zionists that are responsible for these drawings to them?
Realizing that other Muslims made these drawings a lot time ago, when it was clearly FINE to depict Mo Ham Head might make their heads explode.

I don't know that that's so. And frankly, there is some beautiful Islamic art out there from "back in the day". Of course, it often gets captioned in supposedly secular art museums (cough Freer Gallery cough) with things like this:

#222 buzzsawmonkey

That this was done by a Christian artist would actually make some sense. The Middle-East (despite Islamic propaganda to the contrary) was home to many advanced civilizations before the Islamic invasions, and home to Jews, Zororastrians and, of course, Christians, who had achieved a high degree of artistic quality (think Byzantine icons, etc.)

The repetitive diaper-work (as the patterning on the pulpit is called) is also characteristic of medieval Christian art rather than the geometrics associated with Islamic art.

I don't claim to be an expert in this field, but I would be very surprised if an expert did not confirm that this was done by a Christian artist, even if it appears in a Muslim manuscript. As I've said, it was not unusual to hire the best illuminator around, regardless of whether or not he was a co-religionist.

Get that guy Dave to do the painting. Da-Vid? Well la-de-dah!

Well, let's see how the "discussion" goes. If, after "discussion", they affirm their freedom to not live under Sharia law, I'll consider them braver than 95% of the world's media.

Point taken, though. That they would even go as far as to not immediately cave in warrants some credit, I grudgingly suppose.

This may be a bit of a rhetorical question, but I wonder when Muslims think of Mohammed consummating his marriage to a 9 year old prepubescent girl or, after death, boiling in a vat of semen in hell, are they so offended by drawings of him depicting his everyday life, when he was still molesting the living, planting worms in their brains, really all that bad? I mean in comparison, and maybe I am not so educated on the subject, maybe they should lighten up.

310 Outrider  Mon, Feb 4, 2008 1:17:04pm

Isn't it strange how upset some Muslims are getting about this? When I went to the Wiki article and (in the past) having looked at Zombies (?) article of Mohammad's pictures, almost all of them were painted by fellow Muslims. What's wrong with this picture?

Again; if they desire to live in the seventh century, well-more power to them. But, I wish they would quit trying to drag the rest of us into their cesspool.

I am guessing Muslims are so miserable in their chosen religion they become like some ex-drinkers, ex-smokers, dieters, etc. They just want everyone to feel as miserable as they do.

Actually, they probably think all of that's pretty cool (except, perhaps the boiling in a vat of semen in hell - that may bet too strange even for them).

The other stuff, the pedophilia, the molestation, the worms in the brains, yeah I think they're pretty cool with all of that.

313 Arbalest  Mon, Feb 4, 2008 1:34:56pm

No, no, no.

The reason that the Muslims have such a problem with this picture is that it shows the people just getting up off the floor, after dancing this little number, while Dr. Mo-n-furter (note the floor-length cloak) has ascended the steps in preparation for this.

Check the visual clues: steps, floor length cloakreferences to satan(ic mechanics), etc.; we know what they're hiding.

318 nc_nightowl  Mon, Feb 4, 2008 1:57:23pm

I find the whole freak-out over the images of Mohammad thing ironic. It's my understanding that the reason Islam forbids images is to prevent the worship of what the image portrays. It seems from the reaction these images evoke, Mohammad has become a god to those screaming "blasphemy" whenever he makes an appearance on the internet. I can understand not having a life sized velvet Mo hanging over the alter in the local mosque, but how are depictions of him in a non-religious context leading Muslims to worship a false god? I could better understand if people were making light of Allah, but Mohammad was just a man, after all.

Actually, in case it hasn't already been pointed out yet: Most of the pictures of Mohammed in this wikipedia article were taken directly from my Mohammed Image Archive. I did a secret "watermark" on all my files (changing the color value of one of the pixels in a certain way) so I can always tell if a picture was taken from my site. Almost all (with only a couple of exceptions) of the pictures of Mo in wikipedia are from the MIA.

Which is fine. I don't own rthe copyright on these pictures or anything. Happy to be of service, even if uncredited. That's what the Archive is all about! The ripple effect - spreading Mo imagery across the Web in an unending stream.

And a ballsy reply from someone in PA:

"Remove these pictures now, it is a disgrace to our religion. Pictures of holy figures are not allowed and gives a false impression on our religion" You know what's a real disgrace towards your religion? That your prophet's favorite wife was under the age of ten. 4. I can understand not wanting to be forced to draw pictures of Mohammed or look at pictures of Mohammed, but the existence of images that someone claims to look like Mohammed is pretty thin seething material.

These jerks can spin the thinest of filaments into whole cloth when they need a reason to be offended.

Yes, they do. To answer the questions (IAAWE!)

2.) same answer.

3.) If it's said by a reliable source. (Note that WP accepts some sources as reliable that I personally wouldn't, but that's a different problem.)

Maybe it explains the Mohammedan fascination with erecting Minarets. I mean, could you design anything more phallic? And 5 times a day it demands that people prostrate and bow to it?
I weirded out.

Muslims love minarets for three reasons (in my opinion):

1) That architectural style was stolen from the Byzantines, the last major infidel power to fall in the Middle East. Muslims are severely fixated on past accomplishments.
2) Allah gives two thumbs up for stealing from infidels and claiming the booty (in this case, architecture) as your own.
3) Under Sharia law infidel buildings must be shorter than Muslim ones. Building minarets that tower over everything is a statement of Muslim power.

They say that the so-called "Muslim" medieval artists were in fact not true Muslims:

BBC television, February 2, 2006: the BBC broadcast a televised news segment featuring pictures and information from the Mohammed Image Archive. Click here to see a short QuickTime mpeg video of the broadcast. Here's a transcript:

re: #347 zombie

Zombie: I'm curious as to whether you have any information as to the likelihood of the image in question having been done for the Islamic manuscript by a non-Muslim illuminator, in light of the points I raised in #222 and thereafter.

Possibly. Or a Muslim who was imitating Christian manuscripts.

All of Islam is nothing more than "Judaism and Christianity for the Arabs": much of the Koran was lifted straight from Christian books in monasteries in Syria and the Sinai. That much is already known. The whole religion is a ripoff of Judeo-Christian sources -- overlaid with Arab triumphalism.

The halo itself comes from the pigeon-guards on Roman statues. A lot of those statues were still floating around in the 7th century. So the artist could taken it from the same inspiration that inspired the Christian artists in the first place.

Or -- they just hired a Christian, as you say. We will never know.

In Islam, it is againgst our religion to draw pictures of any of the prophets (I.e. Jesus, Moses, Aaron, Muhammud...) The reason is because we don't know what they looked like. I think that the people of the world need to respect each other's beliefs, even if we don't agree with everything. To me my way, and to you yours.

Thank you, Wikipedia! It's refreshing to find ANY large organization with the strength of character and the (well-deserved!) self-respect to tell these barbaric fascists to keep their pig-brained medieval totalitarian ideology in the stinking cesspools they have made of their homelands and dark pits of mindless ignorance they so hilariously refer to as "schools" and "holy places". Offending the Mohammedan death cult? Who CARES?!?! That revolting gang of murderers has offended civilized humanity at every encounter, usually with its violent intolerance, its hatred for the rational world, its callous brutality that is the only way by which it has compelled submission from the terrified victims, its own muslims, it continues to degrade and oppress every day. And for pete's sake, draw a Propeller Beanie Upon Him!

Given the general Muslim prohibition on depictions of animal life, my question is how they justify television, movies, or computers—any one of them can and do depict humans or animals. What's up with that? For your viewing pleasure: 1, 2, 3(graphic). Get over it.

I used to use wikipedia as resource in school projects, lesson plans, etc. This has really opened my eyes to the lack of respect or care for accuracy of Wikipedia.com. There are not just one, but many images that claim to be of Prophet Muhammad throughout your site. This is shocking in that they are 1)completely inaccurate and 2)extremely offensive and disrespectful. This is a man who has contributed so much to mankind; one has only to study his (accurate) history and his message (Islam) to see that. To attempt to depict/display his picture is belittling and derogatory - it does not hurt him, but it hurts those who love him. It also has dire consequences for anyone involved in this depiction/display or its promotion. Ask yourselves, am I ready to defend myself before GOD and man for THIS? No one is, so I urge you: remove ALL such images from your site immediately.

382 ratherdashing  Mon, Feb 4, 2008 5:55:06pm

The picture and entry was debated a year ago on Wikipedia. See their "Talk" page. Here's the money quote:

If all Muslims know that the neither the Quran nor the Hadith explicitly prohibit pictures of Muhammad, why are we even having this discussion? The Hadiths ban images of any person or animal. Muslims choose to ignore this, and instead have watered down this prohibition to only include picture of their prophet. The obvious question is, if Muslims are allowed to ignore their own laws and water them down to the point that they become almost meaningless, why all the outrage over non-Muslims ignoring the same rules? If a "true" Muslim was to obey the actual rules, they would be using a text-based browser to surf the internet to avoid seeing any pictures. IE has an option to disable pictures, you know. But I doubt any of the people who are complaining have done that. Why not? It seems that even Muslims realize that the prohibition against pictures and art is silly -- that's why they ignore it. That being the case, I don't see how you can get upset at other people for ignoring the very same rules. If you believe that your deity is going to punish you for looking at art, then I suggest that you change your IE settings right now to avoid pissing him off. But leave everybody else alone. We'll deal with Allah when we get there. -- Big Brother 1984 04:06, 17 February 2007 (UTC)

383 MadJadBad  Mon, Feb 4, 2008 6:17:34pm

You would think that if those Muslims who are offended wanted to really be pious, they would just not go to wikipedia, or, even better, not use the internet at all (or computers, etc).

This has nothing to do with being offended and everything to do with shoving religious beliefs down our throats.

What an absolutely moronic request. The simplest solution to avoid the temptation of worshiping the image, is to set their browser to block images from wikipedia. It's quick, easy, and respects the freedoms of others who do not practice that faith.

But solution that respects individual liberties and does not bully anyone into submission *rolleyes*

412 nmathew  Tue, Feb 5, 2008 2:08:55pm

I have an inquiry. Is Mohammad special, or are images of all (most?) prophets forbidden? I ask because I'm curious if the many depictions of Jesus are offensive to some Muslims.

413 DANEgerus  Tue, Feb 5, 2008 2:24:51pm

Yet wikipedia propagates the myth, circa 1930's, that the Al-Aqsa Mosque was where Mohammed ascended to heaven, ignoring the fact that Jerusalem wasn't conquered until years after his death.

By that logic any city can be claimed for Islam when it's convenient because all military conquests become the 'farthest mosque' and fit the fraud.

414 Loki_1972  Tue, Feb 5, 2008 3:33:13pm

re: #412 nmathew

From what I've read here at religionfacts.com, it's a prohibition on all graven images. Images that might be worshiped equal to god.

"Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in Heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth. You shall not bow down to them or serve them; for I the LORD your God am a jealous God. "
-- Second Commandment (Exodus 20:4-5)

"Those who paint pictures would be punished on the Day of Resurrection and it would be said to them: Breathe soul into what you have created." (Hadith, Sahih Muslim vol.3, no. 5268)

It goes on to provide examples from the Hadith in which Mo prohibits portraits or depictions of himself.

"He [the Prophet] instructed his companions not to draw a picture of him, and this has been taken as a general prohibition. He also told them not to pray in places that have images. There also is a general prohibition against full statues. And -- though today, of course, we find photos in all passports -- many Muslims have felt some hesitance about permitting portraits of any kind." {3}

Just how this morphed into zero portraits or depictions of any Muslim is anyone's guess...

415 EE  Tue, Feb 5, 2008 4:50:52pm

If Muslims don't want to hang up drawings of their prophet Muhammed in their homes, because it would seem that they are worshiping Muhammed, they are free to not hang up such drawings. Nobody is compelling them to.

But what this group wants to do is to change the behavior of kafirs, to get them to not draw or publish or look at pictures of Muhammed. Why? Are they then going to insist that kafirs obey most of the rules that Muslims take upon themselves? Are kafirs to become semi-Muslims?

Well yes, they are. That is after all the natural order of things according to Islam: Muslims rule, infidels obey them.

417 georgia2012  Tue, Feb 5, 2008 7:19:14pm

We infidels as you call us, don't have to obey anyone, got it? Why should the cartoons be taken down? For one I am not muslim so therefore I don't recognized this Mohammad as a prophet, so it does not count. And in case you never heard of it, its called freedom of speech which is something we value in Western countries. You don't like it feel free to go back to your own country. You muslims are way way too sensitive as you've proven many times over. And beheading someone for cartoons is bit extreme don't you think. Not to mention barbaric and uncivilized. I thank God Almighty every day that I am NOT a muslim.
