Wafa Sultan on Al Jazeera

Sun, Mar 9, 2008 at 2:46:06 pm PDT

Here’s Arab-American psychiatrist Wafa Sultan in another amazing appearance on Al Jazeera, facing down a lunatic moderator and a lunatic Islamist with righteous anger.

This is what “speaking truth to power” really means.

Please note again, the sheer hatred and irrationality that is Al Jazeera’s stock in trade. The “moderator” is just as bad as—or worse than—the Islamist, denying the Holocaust over and over. (Courtesy of MEMRI TV.)

This show has really caused some waves in the Islamic world: Al Jazeera apologises for comments against Islam.

Doha The Aljazeera Arabic News Channel has apologized to its viewers for offensive comments against Islam made by “Wafa Sultan, a Syrian- born lady” a guest of its last Tuesday programme Al Itijah Al Mu’akis (The Opposite Direction).

The live debate programme was on the reprinting of cartoons in Denmark that insult the Prophet Mohammed (PBUH). The channel had also cancelled the rerun of the programme which was to be telecast on Wednesday and Thursday.

The programme had drawn a massive reaction through telephone calls, faxes, and email from inside and outside Qatar criticizing and denouncing the comment made by the guest, Al Sharq daily has said it learnt, adding that the programme had further generated a strong outrage among the channel’s staff.

Arab-American Psychiatrist Wafa Sultan: "All religions and faiths, throughout the history of humanity, have been subject to criticism and affronts. With time, this has helped in their reform and development. Any belief that chops off the heads of its critics is doomed to turn into terrorism and tyranny. This has been the condition of Islam, from its inception to this day. Islam has sentenced [its critics] to prison, and whoever crosses the threshold of that prison meets his death. The Danish cartoons have managed to break down the first brick in the wall of that prison, and to open up a window, through which the sunrays enter, after a lengthy darkness.
17 kuffarharbi  Sun, Mar 9, 2008 2:59:15pm

Although these nutters are downright despicable, you can't deny their entertainment value. Their sheer irrationality, hysteria, and wild factual mistakes make them cartoonish and hyperbolic in the Monty Python tradition. I actually enjoy these demented exchanges on the Arab media as they display what lunatics they really are, especially when confronted with someone of such searing intelligence and integrity as Wafa Sultan. She should have her own chat show using only radical Islamists as guests.

She's definitely got a point, but I suspect that the reason al-Jizz put this up is that she could be made to represent everything they condemn about the west -- atheism, immorality (letting a woman talk, for heaven's sake) etc. Allowing her to cite facts allows them to then rebut them with their tired propaganda. Since she's identified as a race/religious traitor, the viewers will agree with her accusers, not her. She is obviously a CIA/Zionist agent, no?

This was a high-tech lynching of an uppity uncovered female, if you ask me.

Having said that, I really loved the other guest's notion that every wonderful thing in world culture and science came from Islam. I think the Chinese and the Hindus may have a thing or two to say about that, buddy (Penis-Butter-Upon-your Face). At best, Medieval Islamic culture transmitted Greco-Roman culture, Indian mathematics, and the Indian game of Chess to Western Europe. And that's about it...

Well, on second thought, this is unfair, I know, because Islamic culture has given us Car-Shwarmas, Bugs Bunny's "Hassan-Chop" meme, and coffee. What would we be without these treasures?

The Aljazeera Arabic News Channel has apologized to its viewers for offensive comments against Islam by “Wafa Sultan

I don't know but, unless Aljazeera thinks all muslims are the same (and therefore there would be no such thing as a 'moderate muslim') they wouldn't assume that Wafa Sultan's comments would be offensive to all muslims.

Just by recalling the chants we've heard before at "protests", "Behead anyone who insults Islam" and taking into account all the actual murders commited by muslims in retalitation to "insulting Islam" (Theoh Van Gogh for example)... the only explanation I have for Aljazeera's 'apology' is, it's just a veiled attempt at calling for her execution.

99 justamomof4  Sun, Mar 9, 2008 4:11:24pm

The segment beginning at around 9:50 drew my attention and concern:

Qassem: "She Has No Problem Denying the Holy Books, But she is Adamant About Not Denying Historical Documents"

Wafa Sultan: "Why do you want me to deny historical documents that confirm that the Holocaust took place? If there was no proof, I would deny it. But I cannot deny history, knowledge, and documents confirming that the Holocaust indeed took place. Why do you want me to deny the facts?"

Moderator
: "From what she says, it is clear that she has no problem denying the holy books, but she is adamant about not denying historical documents."

Wafa Sultan: "Can you as a Muslim deny the massacre of the Jews of the Bani Qureyza tribe, by Muhammad and his followers?" [...]

Even the formidable Dr. Sultan stated:

"If there was no proof, I would deny it".

How much time is left before these proofs are in jeopardy as are all things considered jahiliyya [not fitting the Islamic template]?

With Europe rapidly devolving into the undemocratic EU, and the potential of Turkey's admission to the EU, all those records, landmarks and museums dedicated to the Holocaust are in jeopardy.
We are incredibly fortunate to have Dr. Sultan, God bless her. She enlightens us all.

About that Philippines quote...

===

"I want no prisoners. I wish you to kill and burn, the more you kill and burn the better it will please me. I want all persons killed who are capable of bearing arms in actual hostilities against the United States.” General Jacob H. Smith said.

Since it was a popular belief among the Americans serving in the Philippines that native males were born with bolos in their hands, Major Littleton "Tony" Waller asked "I would like to know the limit of age to respect, sir?."

"Ten years," Smith said.

"Persons of ten years and older are those designated as being capable of bearing arms?"

"Yes." Smith confirmed his instructions a second time.

He was dubbed "Hell Roaring Jake" Smith, "The Monster", and "Howling Jake" by the newspapers.

(stolen and re-edited from Wiki)

===

Thanks to the Spanish, the Samar region Filipino natives in question were already nominally Christian and Hell Roaring Jake was never a president, of anything.

What has Islam done for mankind lately?

Also of note, the moderator made lite of the umma's reaction to the Danish cartoons here:

Dr. Faysal Al-Qassem, Moderator: "How come freedom of expression in the West is sacred only when it comes to degrading the Muslims? Are they allowed to talk about the Holocaust? Are they allowed to talk about Christianity? That is the question. Cinemas were burned down in the West when they talked about Christ."

Wafa Sultan: "I live in America, and I never heard of a single cinema that was burned down here. Where do you get your information from? It sounds as if you are living in America, not me."

Moderator: "In France."

Wafa Sultan: "This is completely baseless. You should criticize your own beliefs just as Christians criticize their beliefs."

[...]

Moderator: "Don’t you think that you are treating the viewers like fools? You present some trivial reactions as barbaric.

Mind your words

Sir: The comment by the QCA president M A Shahid in The Peninsula (Jan. 8) prompted me to write this. He supported the umpires by saying that they are humans and hence mistakes can happen! Those humans who keep on making mistakes are idiots. If they are there to commit mistakes why would any one need them? Come on now, the ICC are paying them. Will Shahid allow employees under him to make mistakes time and again? No, never! He must play some cricket to “Feel” it and then make such comments! Playing is not as easy as talking.

Yup, Arab Islamists are the Perfect People. Their chakras are all ordered, their engrams have left them, and they are ready to advance to the pure state. All they have to do is blow themselves up and/or kill a lot of children.

I believe the civilizations in Persia, India and elsewhere in Asia minor were in place, and doing fine before the moslem hordes conquered them. Saying that islam is responsible for the preservation of knowledge and learning is a lot like saying communism was responsible for advancement of rocket science, because Sputnik, and the first manned space flight took place in Russia under Kruschev. Technology advanced despite communism, and learning survived despite islam, not because of it. Of note too, whereas some learning did survive, in the moslem world, none advanced. Hence the squalor in the islamic world post middle ages. Science happened in the West.

That was the best 13 minutes I've spent all day -- what a brave woman, and a powerful refutation of the empty rhetoric of Islamist fools.

I liked the Islamist's line how the cartoons can do nothing against the faith of Islam -- oh yeah? The faux outrage on a whole host of occasions is testimony to the weakness and spiritual emptiness of the Islamic faith, at least the extremist interpretation.

Good observation.

Between the fall of Rome and the discovery of oil in SA, nobody on this side of the Atlantic really gave a rat's tookus about the entire area -- we were willing to leave it to the Ottomans until their government collapsed, upon which time we decided that the French and British could keep it with our blessings.

AFAIK there was no input from the US into the Balfour POS, and we left it on our part to the likes of John D. Rockefeller, the creator of Standard Oil, and J. Pierpont Morgan, who dabbled in a lot of things that let him wear a diamond stickpin. One of those things was a majority of the stock in International Mercantile Marine, parent company of the White Star Line (and hence owners of Titanic).

Tangentially, none of the IMM board really liked, trusted, or admired Bruce Ismay, especially after he sold them his father's shipping line. They did nothing to soften his fall during the hearings.

There's also the little matter of the Holocaust. The people that knew about it but did nothing until it was far too late wanted to assuage their guilt, hence the creation of Israel.

What a heroic person Dr. Sultan is. I LOVE HER!

Speaking truth to power, indeed. Of course, the very nature of Islam means "power" puts its fingers in its ears and says "I can't hear you" over and over.

BUT - this went out live. :) Shaking things up is good. Some people will always listen to truth and actually LISTEN.

130 Steffan  Sun, Mar 9, 2008 5:16:06pm

Something I forgot to mention -- pirates. We had a nice little dustup with the Barbary Pirates during Thomas Jefferson's administration (which is why the Marines sing about the shores of Tripoli), and the Brethren of the Coast really really liked sailing in the Red Sea and the Indian Ocean -- the Mogul's ships were invariably richly laden and the pirate crews certainly didn't mind raping Moslem women.

IIRC, the only member of the Great Brotherhood of the Coast who actually managed to retire successfully, apart from Morgan, was Henry Avery. He took the Mogul's tribute ship and thereafter disappeared. There's some speculation he ended up in England as a gentleman farmer.

By then they had spears and crude bows and arrows. Apart from each other -- no one trusted the next tribe over, with quite a bit of justification -- they'd be after bigger game by then. How much usable meat would you get from the average allosaur, do ya think?

Incidentally, the Indians had stories about their ancestors hunting hairy elephants out on the plains, or so said Louis L'Amour.

Every time a [bigoted word] "scholar" opens their mouth one immediately realizes the islamist leadership is terrorized by the modern world. Even the most illiterate of so called koranic "scholars instinctively recognize the fact that the so called religion of Islam is completely incompatible with and can not survive the economic, social, and cultural changes that have already transformed Western countries and are now underway in China and India.
If western nations hace the fortitude to keep the the islamofascists from getting weapons of mass annihilation Mohammed's hateful, misogynstic, and anti-humanitarian so called religion will be little more than another dead cult.
If the leftist appeasers grab the levers of power in the US in November I fear we are on our way to a global holocaust.

Ah, I think he is referring to Europe in that put-down. I wonder how he can reconcile the fact that, in the 11th century, there were more water-powered engines (water mills, for example) in Yorkshire and Northumbria than in the entire Islamic world.

But at the same time I find the moderator's 'Burning French Cinemas' lie to be hilarious. Can you imagine the French defending the honour of Christ by rampaging and destroying movie theaters!?!

154 El Guape  Sun, Mar 9, 2008 11:23:28pm

Here in Abu Dhabi the press is going into apoplectic fits that Al Jazeera would air that. Most of the more conservative papers are not printing it at all as a form of censorship. I learn more every day living here. You think the UAE is liberal? Hear a lot about Dubai and how modern it is? 20 miles north east of Dubai, a woman was stoned to death last week and in another week someone else is going to be beheaded. A friend of mine from Egypt had a beer and drove home from my place. He was stopped, asked if he had anything to drink (they do blood tests on the spot and if you have any alcohol in your system, I mean any, game over). He responded in the affirmative, and they told him the penalty for being Muslim and drinking was 80 lashes. He told them he was going to convert to Christianity. The cop said "Then we will cut off your head." He took the lashes. His back was and is a mess.

I love this quote

"The Jews have come from the tragedy (of the Holocaust), and forced the world to respect them, with their knowledge, not with their terror, with their work, not their crying and yelling," she says. "Humanity owes most of the discoveries and science of the 19th and 20th centuries to Jewish scientists. Fifteen million people, scattered throughout the world, united and won their rights through work and knowledge. We have not seen a single Jew blow himself up in a German restaurant. We have not seen a single Jew destroy a church. We have not seen a single Jew protest by killing people. The Muslims have turned three Buddha statues into rubble. We have not seen a single Buddhist burn down a Mosque, kill a Muslim, or burn down an embassy. Only the Muslims defend their beliefs by burning down churches, killing people, and destroying embassies. This path will not yield any results. The Muslims must ask themselves what they can do for humankind, before they demand that humankind respect them."
