-RetweetDemocrat Eliot Spitzer Prostitution Thread 2

Mon, Mar 10, 2008 at 12:38:21 pm PDT

Another thread for the Eliot Spitzer story as details emerge; the latest news is that Spitzer has not actually been indicted as previously reported.

And he hasn’t resigned yet, probably because he’s trying to keep his options open for a plea deal to stay out of jail.

(Did I mention he’s a Democrat? And a Daily Kos diarist?)

UPDATE at 3/10/08 12:40:58 pm:

He was caught on a federal wiretap arranging to meet a prostitute...

UPDATE at 3/10/08 12:50:35 pm:

From the Albany Times Union. (Hat tip: LawHawk.)

A staffer in an office of a Republican state senator, whose leader, Joe Bruno, has clashed with Gov. Spitzer, described the scene in her office as one of joy: “My office is just loving this. It’s like a party, sans alcohol.”

UPDATE at 3/10/08 1:17:22 pm:

An interesting question: will Spitzer be allowed to remain a super-delegate for Hillary Clinton?

UPDATE at 3/10/08 1:22:57 pm:

Here’s the FBI affidavit at The Smoking Gun: Spitzer Linked To Hooker Probe - March 10, 2008.

UPDATE at 3/10/08 1:32:50 pm:

Media are reporting that the brothel involved charges up to $5,500 an hour, but according to the affidavit linked above, “Client-9” paid $4,300.

He must have gotten the Democratic New York Governor discount.

He's already been a headache and a half for Hillary - the illegal alien driver's license mess screwed things up for Hillary for a while there. I'm sure Democrat leaders are going to be trying to figure out the best way to kick Spitzer to the curb as soon as possible.

The longer this drags on, the worse it will be for the Democrats in NY - and Hillary in particular. Spitzer is one of her superdelegates. Heh.

33 Eric Cartman's Conscience  Mon, Mar 10, 2008 12:45:53pm

The Dems at Kos and Huffpo are already making links to Spitzer getting caught and the Bush wiretap veto! Yes, Bush did it to get Spitzer. Moreover, it seems most dems favor legalizing prostitution qua The Netherlands and so this Spitzer thing is really no big deal.

36 Thanos  Mon, Mar 10, 2008 12:46:04pm

The big question: Will Spitzer Remain a Superdelegate?
ALBANY, N.Y. -- While candidates are out trying to gain delegates in primaries and caucuses across the country, there is still talk of how the super delegates will play a role in who will become the democratic presidential nominee.
A super delegate is a current or former elected office holder or party official and the vote of a super delegate carries more weight. These votes may be called upon to make history at this year's Democratic national convention. On the list of super delegates is former President Bill Clinton, Senator Chuck Schumer and Governor Elliot Spitzer.
We caught up with Spitzer for his take on super delegates and where his loyalties lie.
“We have to see how it plays out. I think there's still time to go. There will be additional primaries and then there will be some time for reflection and an examination on what super delegate should do. I am pledged to Hillary Clinton. Hillary won New York, so in my case it's an easy choice. I can not only reflect my pledge but that of New Yorkers," said Spitzer.

37 Slumbering Behemoth  Mon, Mar 10, 2008 12:46:13pm

When I was in Amsterdam I went to check out the Red Light district. Just window shopping, didn't actually "buy" anything. There were an awful lot of women in the area for the same reason, just to view the spectacle of it all.

Not once did I observe a single one of those non-working women being harassed by anyone.

arrested development. plain and simple. some people need to feel powerful, and using prostitutes is one avenue for that. he behaved like an adolescent boy, instead of a grown-up.

i watched my old man behave in a similar manner growing up and I swore I'd never do that to my family. he's stepped on his dick with golf shoes, but he also stepped on his families heart. the kids will never look at him the same, and the wife will probably end up having to put up with the jerk to keep the house and the perks. sad.

re: #205 Slumbering Behemoth

Fuck the jihadis. If they hate us because of prostitution, I say legalize it just to piss them off. If they hate us because of gov. corruption, well that is just laughable.

Doesn't matter, we could become the most pure, modest and chaste society over night and the jihadis would still lust for our destruction.

You've missed the irony. The ante-war left accuses the right of stirring up the hated of the jihadis by involving ourselves in the middle east. Yet the jihadis claim that it is decadent western culture that provokes them as well and proves they are righteous. I'm just rubbing the left's nose in it's own pile. I know the jihadis even punish burqa wearing conformists, so there has never been any hope of ever appeasing them in the west.

re: #44 Globular Cluster

He's legally blind, so he probably does not require the most expensive prostitutes. A clean-smelling, one-armed cheapo will do just fine.

I've met Paterson on several occasions back in the day (working at the Legislature). Genuinely nice guy. Tough but fair. Liberal, but that goes without saying (it's NY after all).

He was almost not even going to be on the ticket. Other Democrats (Rangel and his cronies) had been pushing for Assemblywoman Eve (daughter of former Assemblyman and major domo Arthur Eve of Buffalo).

But this is downright rich:

Smartest man in the room.

In an interview yesterday, Mr. Rangel sounded off on Mr. Spitzer by giving public voice for the first time to an opinion that several Democratic officeholders have shared privately for years: that Mr. Spitzer can act like the smartest man in the room, even with allies, when he believes he is right, which is most of the time.

"When Eliot Spitzer, the world's smartest man, is telling me that he has picked his candidate and knows that his candidate can win, who am I to question the world's smartest man?" said Mr. Rangel, the dean of the New York Congressional delegation.

"I like to think that the world's smartest man has counted all the support he has for his candidate," he continued. "I don't remember David Paterson asking any of us for his support, but if Eliot has picked a candidate, who am I to deny him that decision?"

Dumb as a bag of hammers is more like it - which is befitting of what he does - using a sledgehammer to bully his way.

I didn't vote for Spitzer, in fact I don't care for his policies in general. But I and a lot of other New Yorkers were hoping that with a landslide victory in the election he'd show some competence despite that. Unfortunately he keeps dropping the ball. Did I say "dropping"? I meant throwing it down.

I think he's on his way out. People up here are fed up with him. Well, that's a lesson for you. If someone promises "change" all day long, you should be wary.

-ron

178 eon  Mon, Mar 10, 2008 1:05:09pm

Wow. Just, wow.

I knew that Spitzer was an arrogant, sanctimonious ass. I even knew that as a former Clintonista, he probably wasn't to be trusted on general principles (on the "Would you buy a used car from this man" principle).

But then he goes out of his way to honk off everybody in New York, including people who supported him, and then does a number like this on them, and his family?

The only words that I can think of that wouldn't get me banned are;

Gary Hart

Ted Kennedy

Bill Clinton.

It seems to be a contagious malady with the leaders of the "progressive" pack.

I am important and powerful. I can do anything I want to. Therefore, I will use women for my pleasure, and never have to suffer any consequences.

Well, here's a hint for them all;

It's your families that will suffer the consequences, you idiots.

And if you don't care about them, you aren't worthy to be called men.

Get it?

However, it will be interesting to see how Howard Dean and his buddies in the MSM spin this one.

As described in the FBI document, Client-9 (clearly a repeat customer) apparently went to great lengths to arrange the illicit Washington encounter, choosing to mail money to the ring, instead of using a credit card. Additionally, the affidavit notes that after her appointment with Client-9 ended, "Kristen" spoke with a Emperors Club booker, who said that she had been told that Client-9 "would ask you to do things that, like, you might not think were safe..."

Actually, as an argument "against" prostitution (in the sense of why it should be illegal), I don't think it's very good at all. E.g, "the reason that cigarettes should be banned is because that ephysemic smoker is someone's daughter", etc. It just "proves too much" as an argument.

A Long Night for Times Metro Desk

A team of New York Times metro and investigation reporters and editors have been working since yesterday afternoon to break the story of Eliot Spitzer's alleged involvement with a prostitution ring, according to a newsroom source.

The group of editors were led by metro editor Joe Sexton, politics editor Mary Ann Giordano (former Observer managing editor!), metro political editor Carolyn Ryan and investigation editors Matthew Purdy, Kevin Flynn and Ian Urbina.

The team of reporters was led by Danny Hakim, the Albany reporter who was reporting in the city yesterday.

The group of reporters also included David Chen, a reporter out of the paper's Trenton bureau, and William Rashbaum, the paper's court reporter.

According to our source, editors and reporters, led mostly by Mr. Sexton and Ms. Girordano, were shuffling in and out of conference rooms and repeatedly calling field reporters deep into the night. It was especially rare for Mr. Sexton and Ms. Giordano to be in the office on a weekend night, with Mr. Sexton only "rarely" making appearences on Sunday nights, the source said.

The story went on their web site around 2 p.m. today, which since has been going on and off line.

At the building, a huge crowd has gathered near the paper's metro area on the third floor.

This memo, sent by metro editor, Peter Khoury, was just sent out as well: "Obviously, we're going to have much late news, thanks to the governor. So we really need you to file all nonrelated stories as early as possible. It's going to be a long night..."

I am amazed that al-NYT was the one to break this, especially re a Demonrat.

Nobody, to my knowledge has accused Hugh Grant of being gay.

Grant has, however, lent credence to the old Monty Python "Upper-Class Twit of The Year" skit.

It takes a really outstandingly idiotic twit to look like him- and be cheating on Elizabeth For-G-d's-Sake Hurley.

Spitzer has a beautiful wife, three gorgeous daughters, and a job that's probably even better than Grant's. And not only pulls the same crap on them, but pays ($5,500/$50)= 110 times as much to do it.

As Holmes would say, the parallel is exact.

It is not moral, but it is also not illegal.

Also, by some account the young intern in question had a history of relationships with older men and "started" it.

(Which doesn't excuse anything, Clinton shouldn't have touched any of his interns under ANY circumstances).

In this case, the heart of the scandal is the involvement of a "sex ring". That implies organized crime, and its the reason the Feds were involved to begin with. Had Spitzer restrained his extra-curricular activities to more run-of-the-mill hookers, he'd probably have gotten away with it.

"NBC reports that investigators may have phone records linking Spitzer to the prostitution ring. Our reporter on the scene of the brief announcement earlier by the governor says that the tensions among the press corps were running high. When Spitzer finished his cryptic utterance — "I will not be taking questions, I will report back to you in short order" — a camera operator yelled out: "Fucking asshole! What are you doing?" He then called the governor a euphemism for a male body part. Other reporters angrily yelled questions about whether he was resigning as he walked away."

Speaking of cost...

A guy walking down the street sees a woman with perfect breasts. He says to her, "Hey miss, would
you let me bite your breasts for $100?

"Are you nuts? !" she replies, and keeps walking away. He turns around, runs around the block and gets to the corner before she does.

"Would you let me bite your breasts for $1,000?" he asks.

"Listen you; I'm not that kind of woman! Got it?"

So the guy runs around the next block and faces her again. "Would ! you let me bite your breasts just once for $10,000?"

She thinks about it for a while and says, "Hmmm, $10,000, eh? Ok, just once, but not here. Let's go to that dark alley over there."

So they go into the alley, where she takes off her blouse to reveal the most perfect breasts in the world. As soon as he sees them, he grabs them and starts caressing them, fondling them slowly, kissing them, licking them, burying his face in them, but not biting them.

The woman finally gets annoyed and asks, "Well? Are you gonna bite them or not?"

"Nah", he replies. "Costs too much..."

You mentioned the old KGB use of women to derail career operators, or compromise/extract information earlier.

I've got a lot of guys on my team. One of the first things I do is sit them down and tell them to keep it zipped up. No pretty young thing is going to be hitting on you in a hotel bar just because you're charming. So far, they seem to be listening to me. No one wants to wake up in a hotel room with no wallet, no computer/cell phone, and a shit load of explaining to do.

Probably other high-profile clients are involved, but its unlikely that client #9 knows the identifies of clients #s 1-8, (or #s10-99) or even whom all the "management" is.

Spitzer is stepping down because he knows he's not going to be able to keep his job once all the details leak out, and its better for him AND his family, AND the State, for him to drop out of sight sooner rather than later.

The indictment explicitly alleges large scale money laundering, and "sex ring" implies organized crime (doesn't HAVE to be Cosa Nostra, though it could be. . .I don't know, but the Feds do).

Even if the crime ring in question *didn't* actually compromise Sptizer (yet), the ties alone would make him unfit to remain in his seat as governor because nobody could ever be sure.

By the way, in terms of sexual preference, classically its usually the powerful types (eg Army Colonels, politicians, CEOs, etc) who professionally give orders, who prefer to be the sexually submissive ones in S&M play.

This was a wire-tap situation.

This is not about whether prostitution should be legal or not, whether it's moral or not. It's about all the spin-off crimes which are inevitable. Drug dealing, money laundering, physical abuse, underage children being enslaved. Not to mention disease, drug addiction, and early death, a common feature in the life. Not all hookers make 5500 a trick, and apparently neither did these girls.

I really hate the term "human-trafficking". It's Slavery. Let's call it what it is and stop playing into the moral relative utopians hands.

No, no, no, no. It's the "Sex industry." Wimyn are free to use their bodies however they see fit, and how dare you impose your hegemonic patriarchal neo-feudal "values" on wimyn. Of course if they're being exploited, that is on account of the unjust and oppressive character of the capitalist system, which devalues wimyn as workers and encourages violence against them (capitalist wage labor = institutionalized plunder and rape of the workers). The problem is not one of "morals" (those bourgeois tools of oppression) but of the contradictions in the mode of production. Unionization and nationalization of the sex industry is the solution, not persecution of the workers.

QAT is listed here

Welcome to the official website of the U.S. General Services Administration.

This website is your online gateway to GSA, the federal government's premier acquisition agency. Our mission is to help other agencies better serve the public by meeting – at best value – their needs for products and services, and to simplify citizen access to government information and services.

This latest version of gsa.gov includes a new homepage, expanded content, improved navigation, and a customized search engine. All are intended to make our website more valuable and user-friendly. Similarly, changes are underway at GSA that will help us proactively meet the needs of our client agencies and the American public. This is, in short, an exciting and challenging time at GSA.

Our new Strategic Plan for Fiscal Years 2007-2012 charts a course for GSA to provide superior supplies, services and workplace solutions as we strive to better meet our client agencies' multiple workplace needs. Our agencywide goals have also been modified to reflect a new level of commitment to our customers and the American public. Our goals are:

* Stewardship – Leading federal agencies in economical and efficient management of federal assets by spearheading effective policy development and exemplary management of the buildings/workspace, motor vehicles, and personal property provided by GSA;
* Superior Workplaces – Delivering and maintaining productive workplaces consisting of office space, furnishings, technology, supplies, and related services;
* Best Value – Developing and delivering timely, accurate and cost-effective acquisition services and business solutions; and,
* Innovation – Developing new and better ways of conducting business resulting in more productive and effective federal policies and administrative operations.

With this plan, GSA has acknowledged the challenges that face us and charted a course for excellence in the business of government. Our goals also align with President Bush’s challenge for all federal agencies to find new and smarter ways to do business. The more effectively GSA performs, the more efficiency we create. That’s good all around. It saves money, enables us to better serve our customers, and moves us toward the President’s vision of government that is citizen-centered and results oriented.

I began as a small businesswoman, and describe myself as an "unabashed entrepreneur." As such, I will work diligently to create a culture of excellence and innovation at GSA that approaches its federal and private sector customers as an entrepreneur would – with energy, a willingness to innovate and change, and a commitment to emphasizing the "Service" in the General Services Administration.

GSA.gov is the electronic gateway to our agency. I hope you agree that it meets President Bush’s directive to use electronic government to provide citizens with timely, accurate, and consistent information about government services and operations.

I also hope you agree our site reflects the important changes underway at GSA, and that you find it a valuable resource in directing you to the GSA products, services, and policy information you seek. Thank you for visiting gsa.gov.

I know I'm not going to find the "answer" with internet searches.

I am well aware of the use of sex as a means to influence/compromise politicians and others. (There was even a non-fiction book about the Soviets doing it, called "Sexpionage". I read it 15+ years ago, plus I think it was even made into a movie. IIRC, the Soviets even had the equivalent of a finishing school for their "swallows").

The Feds know what's going on, and they may (but probably won't) let the relevant details out.

From the complaint it seems that Spitzer wasn't the prime target of htis investigation, he was just involved. Whether or not he was deliberately targeted as a client by foreign or domestic interests is an interesting and plausible angle, but see above.

Why DO these women show up for these things? Do these loosers pay them? Is it part of the divorce settlement/pre-nup? Why does she need to be there? Hasn't he humiliated her and the children enough?

If I were her, I would wait until he made the confession, feign a shocked look, then start beating him with my purse, which happens to have a brick in it...just for asking me to be there to share in his humiliation. It would so be worth the assault charge.

UPDATE at 3/10/08 1:32:50 pm:

Media are reporting that the brothel involved charges up to $5,500 an hour, but according to the affidavit linked above, “Client-9” paid $4,300.

He must have gotten the Democratic New York Governor discount.

Actually, no, if you read the Smoking Gun document closely, he paid $2,600 for the encounter, plus he had a $400 credit with the madame, so i think he paid $3,000 total for the one encounter. The additional money he gave to the prostitute directly as a deposit for the next encounter.

Also, he didn't pay $3,000 for one hour, but for an encounter of up to four hours. However, he only lasted two hours before leaving the hotel room.

So, in the end, he paid $1,500 per hour.

Those are some expensive call girls!

And for how many years have we had to listen to liberals scream "HYPOCRITE!" every time a Republican got in trouble? Yet, here is Mr. Clean, former chief law enforcement officer of the State of NY, thinking like Charlie Sheen.

Reminds me of a joke:

Every day, when Bill Clinton goes jogging from his house in Chappaqua, he passes a prostitute on the opposite steet corner.
Every time he passes, she yells to him: "One hundred dollars!"
...and every time, he yells back "Five dollars!"
One day, Hillary decides to go jogging with Bill. Bill is terrified that they'll pass the prostitute on the corner.
Sure enough, as soon as they head down the street, Bill sees the prostitute standing in the same spot. He tries to ignore her, but as soon as they get close, the prostitute yells:
"See what you get for five dollars?"

Eye Ex-Dem Chief In Clemency Votes Probe

By GREG B. SMITH
Daily News Staff Writer

A federal probe of possible presidential clemency for votes in
New Square, Rockland County, has zeroed in on a fallen Democratic
leader who was close to Sen. Hillary Rodham Clinton, sources said
yesterday.

Manhattan U.S. Attorney Mary Jo White wants to know whether
former Rockland Democratic leader Paul Adler let Clinton or her
Senate campaign aides know that the Hasidim of New Square wanted
clemency for four of their members convicted of fraud, said two
sources familiar with the probe.

The leadership of the New Square Hasidim had long made it clear
they wanted a pardon for the four men. The town voted 1,400 to 12
for Clinton. Paul Adler

The former First Lady has not categorically denied knowing about
the Hasidim's interest in a pardon before the election, although
she has said the subject was not mentioned when she made a
campaign stop in New Square in August.

In December, she participated in a White House meeting with
representatives of the community when they pressed then-President
Bill Clinton for a pardon, but she has insisted she said nothing
on the subject.

Two weeks ago, the FBI subpoenaed two boxes of documents from the
Rockland County Democratic Party %u2039 all of which had to do with
Adler.

The county's new Democratic leader, Vincent Monte, said he turned
over to the FBI yesterday a raft of documents related exclusively
to Adler.

The subpoena requested "computer records, e-mails, notes,
correspondence, memoranda, calendars, diaries, journals,
correspondence, pickup or delivery receipts, telephone records
and messages authored by and or maintained by or received by Paul
Adler."

Monte said the records he submitted, however, contained mostly
telephone records and little of substance.

He said Adler did not turn over to the party much of the material
mentioned by the FBI, including written agendas and e-mails that
could show whether party or campaign officials knew about the
clemency issue in the heat of the campaign.

Sources said the FBI wants to know whether Adler or one of his
aides mentioned New Square clemency to the First Lady or one of
her aides before Election Day.

That could bolster a case connecting the request for clemency to
the New Square Hasidic community's overwhelming vote for her.

Adler also is seen as a possible key to the investigation because
he is vulnerable.

Last month, he pleaded guilty to tax charges that could land him
in prison for up to five years.

He is scheduled to be sentenced in May.

If he can provide information to the FBI in the New Square probe,
he conceivably could see his term reduced.

Adler's lawyer, Murray Richman, said, "My client was not involved
in that at all." He added that Adler has not been approached by
the FBI.

What is your position on this story, reported by Michelle Malkin - even if one may be pro-choice, are these the policies of a "good governor"?

[Link: michellemalkin.com...]

This morning, NY Gov. Eliot Spitzer had been scheduled to speak to the Family Planning Advocates’ 31st Annual Conference. The abortion racketeers are seeking more money. And he was preparing to push legislators to do their bidding–before he was forced to cancel his appearance.

As payback to his abortion industry supporters, Spitzer had supported “the Reproductive Health & Privacy Protection Act (RHAPP)” under the guise of “codifying Roe v. Wade.” It would:

* Allow non-doctors to perform abortions, including a dentist, a social worker, or a health care practitioner.
* Let girls as young as 12 obtain abortions throughout all 9 months of pregnancy without ever having to tell their parents.
* Force health practitioners or Catholic hospitals to lose their medical licenses if they don’t perform abortions since they would be denying women the “fundamental right” of an abortion.

THE JOURNAL NEWS - May 24, 2006

MONSEY — Ryan Karben came out of seclusion yesterday but declined to discuss sexual misconduct allegations involving a male intern, his future plans or any other issue behind his abrupt resignation last week from the Assembly.

Karben, smiling and laughing at times, declined to expound on his reasons for resigning as he spoke to a Journal News reporter and photographer outside his Melaney Drive house yesterday. He stuck by last week's statement that he resigned to spend more time with his wife, Lauren, and their three young daughters, as well as to concentrate on his law practice.

"I am looking forward to the opportunities that lie ahead," Karben said in response to several questions concerning details surrounding his resignation.

"I have no further comment," Karben said, dressed in a blue shirt and tan pants. "You can tell people I'm very relaxed."

Karben, 31, had not spoken publicly since resigning by e-mail Thursday and issuing a second e-mail the next day thanking his supporters.

After his resignation announcement Thursday, state Democratic sources said Karben had been accused of sexual misconduct, including unwanted advances toward a male intern.

Assembly Speaker Sheldon Silver, they said, forced Karben to resign or face an Assembly ethics investigation for fraternizing with Assembly staff members.

The controversy led to the end of Karben's partnership with the law firm of Kurtzman Matera Gurock and Scuderi in Spring Valley. Neither Karben nor lawyer Howard Gurock would discuss if Karben left the law firm or was asked to leave.

Karben represented the 95th District, which includes Orangetown and parts of Ramapo, for two two-year terms. The district included Karben's power base in Monsey's Orthodox Jewish community and the Hasidic Jewish village of New Square. A former Rockland County legislator, Karben was up for re-election in November.

Lila Chasen, a 40-year resident of Monsey, yesterday said she knew Karben well enough to exchange greetings and talk to him if she saw him on the street. She said she wanted to know Karben's side of all the stories swirling around him.

"As far as I know, he seems to be a very good person and has a good family," Chasen said. "I would like to hear from him and have more information on all this from him."

Karben's abrupt change from public official to private citizen made him the latest Rockland politician to leave public office under a cloud during the past decade and included several Democrats Karben had worked with over the years.

Corruption charges, abetted by a sex scandal, in 1995 brought down then-District Attorney Kenneth Gribetz, who, like Karben is an Orthodox Jew.

Former state Sen. Linda Winikow also served jail time for corruption as an Orange and Rockland Utilities Inc. executive.

And former Rockland Democratic Party Chairman Paul Adler, a Winikow protege and political ally of Gribetz and Karben, went to prison on income-tax evasion and political-corruption charges several years ago.

1. Benjamin Berger
2. Jacob Elbaum
3. Kalman Stern
4. David Goldstein:

These four men were convicted in 1999 of "bilking the US of tens of millions of dollars of bogus programs." They were convicted on "21 charges, including conspiracy, mail fraud, embezzlement, and money laundering." They are members of the Hassidic (Skverer branch) enclave of about 7,000 people called New Square in Rockland County, New York. Berger was the chairman of the Toldos Yakov Yosef seminary in Brooklyn. The seminary did not exist; it was a fraud. As the New York Times noted:

"The academy existed only in documents that formed the centerpiece of an elaborate web of fraud stretching back nearly 20 years: to swindle several government agencies out of several million dollars and to use taxpayers' money for the benefit of seven men and New Square, their religiously exclusive enclave 33 miles from Manhattan ... Critics said [that Clinton's pardon of the four men] was politically motivated to benefit Senator Hillary Rodman Clinton, who had courted support in the Hassidic community."

And as the New York Daily News observed:

"The New Square case has helped create a dark cloud over the start of Hillary Rodman
Clinton's career by creating suspicion that clemency was given in exchange for New
Square's backing her [New York senatorial] candidacy. The village voted, 1,140 to 12, for
her on Election Day ... In 1992, New Square voted 822 for President George Bush and
93 for Bill Clinton, only to flip in 1996 and support President Clinton over Bob Dole,
1,110 to 31. After backing Democratic Governor Mario Cuomo over GOP challenger
George Patakis, 907 to 63, in 1994, New Square switched sides in 1998 and backed
Governor Pataki over Democrat Peter Vallone, 1,132 to 8."

Ms. Clinton had had personal meetings with New Square leaders (and even visited the community) who lobbied her on behalf of the four convicted Hassidic men.

[SNIP]

The Democratic Party chairman of Rockland County, New York, where the New Square community is located, was Jewish real estate mogul Paul Adler. Adler"a key bridge builder to the Rockland County Jewish community" and "key Hillary [Clinton] adviser," was involved in Ms. Clinton's visit to the New Square community when she sought Hasidic support. Adler was subsequently arrested in September of 2000 "on corruption charges," including charges of "public corruption, fraud, extortion and other charges linked to his real estate transactions." [FORWARD, 9-15-2000, p. 15]

On April 13, 2001, the Forward, a Jewish ethnic newspaper, noted another angle, with another character, in the New Square pardons:

"Caught in a firestorm of negative publicity sparked by a federal fraud case and its connection
to 'Pardongate,' leaders of the chasidic village of New Square turned to Rabbi Mayer Schiller
for damage control ... A beloved teacher at Yeshiva University High School for Boys -- a
Modern Orthodox, not chasidic insitution -- Rabbi Schiller also spent years writing and
preaching in defense of European culture, group identity and, most controversial, racial
separation ... Several of Rabbi Schiller's former students and rabbinical colleagues said
they oppose his separatist views, but that his fascination with controversial nationalist
causes stems not from a hatred of racial minorities, but a rejection of post-Enlightenment
universalism and secularism." [EDEN, A., 4-13-01]

I like the law about where it is with regards to abortions - a woman has a right to her own body, but there should be a price to pay, even if it is just the embarrassment of a waiting period, having to pay for it, inform your parents if you are under 18, etc.

Exactly! Anyone can have children, it takes a parent to earn their respect and love. That said, I am troubled by the pain this idiot's daughters and wife will have to endure. This coming from a father of two daughters who had to put up with many stories about their mother. When we make choices in this life, it would be wise to consider how those choices impact those we care about.
I suspect that there are people out there that only care about themselves and ignore the repercussions of their actions on those who are close to them.

I doubt that
a. they're going to figure out who clients 1-8 are without a disclosure by the relevant investigating Federal authorities, and

b. that the Feds would reveal those details of their ongoing investigation, potentially compromising it, and that

c. Any of the clients 1-8 are anywhere as "big" as #9.

Its a pretty select group of individuals who can (and will) pay $5000 an hour for prostitutes, but I'd wager that elected officials (of either party affiliation) are only a small subset of that pool.

741 Alone in NY  Mon, Mar 10, 2008 4:53:47pm

I'm sure its been said, but people outside NY need to hear it. Spitzer was an overbearing abuser of his office as AG. He rarely took cases to court, and usually lost when he did. He made lots of noise in the press though using his power and pulpit as AG to slander many people, hardly a model of constitutional respect. However, since he is a Democrat and a liberal, New Yorkers swooned when he ran for Governor. The majority in this State is incredibly naive, almost sheep like in its reflexive need to pull the Democratic lever on voting day. Spitzer is a self-righteous, power abusing hypocrite of the worst sort.

One more thought.. Fed attorney is a stepping stone.. not a life career.. you can go up from there by winning or by losing cases.. NY is all Democrat government.. whether this case gets handled correctly enough for a conviction will depend on politics.

re: #624 Piltdown Man

I haven't read through the whole thread so I apologize if someone else noticed this, but from reading the FBI affidavit, I see that he not only was a repeat customer but that this interlude took place on Valentine's Day...I'm sure his wife noticed that date.

Also, a serious prediction:

Pretty soon he will announce he is going into rehab.

Of course he will.
Its not his fault, he has a "disease".

The CT AG is no better. Prosecute cases regardless of their merit but on what it can you do for me today to advance my political career. Shameless pandering that begs for exposure. In CT, like NY, this plays well in a "blue state". Kinda sucks to live here.

re: #721 TheObjectivist

Isn't plea bargaining what all prosecuting attorneys do? Spitzer did not write the law, he just enforces it - if the penalties were cruel and unusual, that is a matter for the congress (state and fed) to decide.

What he did was go after innocent businessmen and tell them: "Settle for $2 million or defend yourself. If you defend yourself, I will stretch this out for five years and it will cost you $10 million in fees... and I might get you anyway. Pay up and I will claim victory and you can go free." I know. Personally. It was pure, hardcore extortion. He is a piece of shit.

It will be a 3 or 4 day story ..till he says if he's resigning.. then the whole thing will be off the MSM minds.. and they will have to be fair and nail Republicans again.

re: #739 looking closely

Its a pretty select group of individuals who can (and will) pay $5000 an hour for prostitutes, but I'd wager that elected officials (of either party affiliation) are only a small subset of that pool.

It would be interesting if any politicians got services paid for by lobbyists in exchange for political favors

This is stupid, move on.

Maybe this has been said, but from what I read, the feds didn't even know about the prostitution ring. They were investigating this idiot for hiding bribes because of cash transactions that looked dubious. They just happened across the prostitution thing. It was reported by a bank (as required by law) to the IRS. The IRS contacted the FBI.

I'm fine if a governor sees a prostitute. Not so fine if he hunted them down as part of his job. The big D Dishonest as in Democrat. Yet he could probably get re elected if he extends this out like Craig.

The prostitute in question should do her 2 million dollar turn in Playboy.

Now if he had decided he was gay and was seeing a gay lover it would probably be no problem.

If I were to judge things with a Puritan morality I would declare both actions immoral and improper in the political arena.

If I wasn't a puritan I would give prositution the same pass as I would gay marriage. The same for Marijuana. Prostitution is just a business that solves a lot of social problems. Probably more effective than the government.

Is it time to live in the present or live in the past.

That's one of those endings where one wants more, if possible. But I understand if not.

It still amazes me. Here's a guy who lives on Fifth Avenue, calls himself a Dem, and is adored by the party machine here in the city and the State. Yet these blue state morons can't understand that he is out for himself, out for his piece of tail, and screw them. For money if they happen to be an expensive piece of horse flesh.

/Faso voter, and damn proud of it.

All I have to say is $5500/hr? MY GOD those hos must be prime! I want to see what a $6000/hr prostitute looks like.
