Spitzer Spent $80 Grand on Hookers - Update: Resigning Tomorrow?

Tue, Mar 11, 2008 at 5:06:41 pm PDT

Latest word on the Eliot Spitzer Apocalypse: the “progressive” Democrat spent somewhere in the neighborhood of $80,000 to get his ashes hauled.

ALBANY, N.Y. - With pressure mounting on Gov. Eliot Spitzer to resign over a call-girl scandal, investigators said Tuesday he was clearly a repeat customer who spent tens of thousands of dollars — perhaps as much as $80,000 — with the high-priced prostitution service over an extended period of time.

Oh, and that bit about Spitzer wanting things that “weren’t safe?”

A law enforcement official said Tuesday the discussion had to do with Spitzer’s preference not to wear a condom and the call-girl’s insistence that he use one.

Oh well. I guess Stinky Beaumont was wrong; he told me it had something to do with a wet suit, chaps, and a pair of Mickey Mouse ears.

UPDATE at 3/11/08 5:24:07 pm:

WCBS in New York says Spitzer is going to pull out tomorrow (no pun intended): Sources: Spitzer Resignation Expected Wednesday.

NEW YORK (CBS) — Gov. Eliot Spitzer is set to resign Wednesday, sources tell CBS 2 HD political reporter Marcia Kramer, but insiders say he’s going to use the resignation as a bargaining chip to cut a deal with federal prosecutors and he won’t step down until that happens. The talks have been going on since Tuesday morning.

The governor’s fate rests in the hands of two people: U.S. Attorney Michael Garcia and Michele Hirshman, the head of his legal defense team. The deal they cut will determine Spitzer’s future.

Criminal law experts say Spitzer will definitely have to resign the governorship and that what’s involved in the deal is key. So what’s the best that could happen to him?

“No charges, absolute resignation, and contrition. I think the worst that could happen is a felony plea on one of a number of charges that they could lodge against him,” said noted criminal attorney Ronald Fischetti, who has often had to negotiate with feds on behalf of clients.

Still, Fischetti said Spitzer stands no hope of ever regaining political respect again.

I think his career politically is at an end,” he said.

Ya think? (Hat tip: JammieWearingFool.)

8 Cognito  Tue, Mar 11, 2008 5:10:25pm

Hmm.

Somehow I suspect Eliot Spitzer just cost himself a great deal more than $80K in what is sure to be a lop-sided divorce settlement.

His wife, if she doesn't just toe the Democratic line, stands to make a killing here. Unprotected sex with hookers, provable by federal wiretap? That's reckless endangerment of his spouse.

Say goodbye to that trust fund, Eliot.

She should take him for every penny he's worth.

Also, some other things to keep in mind - Spitzer is probably dickering over the terms of a plea deal. He wants to avoid a felony conviction because that's an automatic loss of his law license. That's probably why it's taken as long as it has so far.

Further, don't pay any attention to the talk of impeachment. Not. Gonna. Happen. The GOP doesn't have the votes in the Assembly to carry that off.

Democrats privately floated another option, telling The Associated Press that Spitzer was considering what was almost unthinkable immediately after Monday's bombshell apology: hanging on.

"If the public is fine, he'll stay," said a Democrat who spoke on condition of anonymity because of the sensitivity of the subject

71 chicagodudewhotrades  Tue, Mar 11, 2008 5:26:32pm

I'm not a lawyer so excuse me if some of these thoughts and questions seem stupid:

First of all, if he gets charged, will this be a federal matter only? Can the State of New York file charges against him?

What is the max penalty under the Mann Act? also since he may have done this more than once, can additional counts of violations of the Act be filed against him?

How much is he worth? I know his dad was into real estate , and is worth a bunch, how much of this is Eliot's?

If his wife decides to leave his hooker-loving hypocritical ass, can she go to the police and file charges against him? I ask because he may (I stress may) have been into unprotected sex. That is a health risk to her. I know that in the past people who had AIDS have been charged when having sex and not telling the partner he/she had AIDS (I'm not implying he has AIDS, I'm just using this as a legal example)

73 flyovercountry  Tue, Mar 11, 2008 5:27:18pm

The one shame in all of this is that Spitzer deserved so much worse. This is a man who made a name for himself as a, "crusader," by suing corporations in civil court when his govt. agency could not find evidence of illegal activity. These garbage suits would be defended and settled at great expense to the corporations who immediately passed these costs on to consumers, (as all costs are.) He was championed as a reformer for the very people he damaged most. It is somewhat fitting that a compliance filing known as an SAR in the financial services industry is what brought him down. He seemed to have a particular zeal for them.

ALBANY, N.Y. - With pressure mounting on Gov. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wasn't it mentioned that some of the $$ he paid the last penguin was a credit for future services ?
Does he have a running tab with all of these girls with future credits out there ?

re: #76 nyc redneck

I could see how she wouldn't suspect. Her husband spent many nights out of town, in Washington, Albany, Manhattan, and wherever else the job may have taken him. NY's a high-profile state.

And another warning sign, secretive phone calls, could also be explained away as state business, secret negotiations, confidential stuff, etc.

But would that prevent an investigation into his actions while AG? If he was hiring hookers as far back as six years ago wouldn't it be prudent to look at prostitution cases he prosecuted?

re: #91 Lizard by the Bay

Dems still answer to voters, and I'm willing to bet that most NY Democrats (at least those not living in the Village) are quite unhappy with their current governor.

Most New York districts are heavily Democrat, so the incumbent holds huge weight. There's no GOP presence in many districts at all, and the members are usually the bosses in their districts so they get to stay in power as long as they like. And when they're done, they'll pass on the seats to their kids. Having worked for the Assembly, I've seen this up close and personal - not to mention heard all manner of story about how members would get away with stuff and yet get reelected by huge margins.

You've got members of the NYS Legislature who slugged police, had DUIs, and other assorted crimes, and yet they'd get reelected by strong margins. In a few instances, the politician stepped down, but that's the rarity.

Spitzer was a political bully who I believe abused his prosecutorial powers as NY AG, and his actions were stupid because it exposed a powerful man to potential blackmail, but frankly in my eyes voluntary prostitution between consenting adults is not a big deal to me. Spitzer is obviously not the only man who has turned to prostitutes; we don't know what his marital relations were like, but men are often driven to philander when their wife decides to retire from sex. The man is not happy but feels duty to his children to keep the family together. Marriages are complicated things. It's so easy to condemn such a man, rejected by his wife, who falls. Call girls, prostitutes, whatever....are often the solution for men whose physical needs aren't being met at home. Affairs, girlfriends, mistresses: are untenable and/or unacceptable socially. As Charlie Sheen said "I'm not paying for sex. I'm paying them to leave."

A. Prostitution is illegal. Period. Not only is it illegal, it is immoral and allows women to be treated like chattel. Spitzer is a sleazebag who liked girls half his age. Regardless of what excuses anyone may offer for his behavior, he is a former prosecutor and a lawyer. He is REQUIRED to uphold the law regardless of his sexual problems.

B. It's not always the WOMEN who have problems in a marriage. Maybe the dude likes weird crap that no woman would do without being PAID.

This, Cognito, is your finest hour.
Yes, it is lovely lovely thought. Hope she gets everything she can get and never has to see his pasty face ever again. Cruel bastard, selfish prick--just go ahead and bring home AIDS and publicly humiliate her while he ruins himself.

135 Bearster  Tue, Mar 11, 2008 6:30:02pm

I can understand (sorta) plea bargaining in cases where one member of a criminal conspiracy agrees to testify against his bosses. Maybe.

But in other cases, it just looks like blackmail. Go to trial, and either get a conviction or acquittal! What kind of "justice" is served to get a conviction on some spurious, unrelated misdemeanor charge?

P.S. I don't think "victimless crimes" ought to be crimes. But then, I don't think that public officeholders get to make that argument ex post facto, and certainly not a man who has destroyed the careers of others--zealously--for exactly this sort of behavior.

136 jcpennylegion  Tue, Mar 11, 2008 6:36:37pm

Still, Fischetti said Spitzer stands no hope of ever regaining political respect again. “I think his career politically is at an end,” he said.

Get serious! He's a democrat -- for him this is just a resume' enhancement.

Remember the democrat who drowned a chick in his car? Went on to a looong career in the US Senate.

Remember the democrat DC-Mayor who got busted doing coke with his bimbo girlfriend in a motel room? Revived his career and serves on the DC city council.

Remember the democrat mayor who wanted federal money to rebuild New Orleans as a "Chocolate" city? Re-elected and doing fine, thank you.

Remember the democrat who was such a big-wig (Kleagle and Exalted Cyclops) in the KKK, who refused to serve in the integrated army in WWII saying "I shall never fight in the army with a Negro at my side"? Now West Virginia's senior senator, and the longest-serving member in the history of the US Senate.

Like all these others, Spitzer will be back. You'll see his campaign posters along the roadside long before you'll ever see him on a "wanted" poster in the Post Office.

Spitzer might have an "Emperor's Club Card" in his wallet with holes punched in it. He could have been just a session away from a free "tossed salad" when he was busted.

That would be just his luck, wouldn't it?

Question for the lawyers out there....

Would there be some sort of precedent for the state bar of NY to investigate Spitzer's activities while he was state AG? Just thinking, since he allegedly was using the services of the world's oldest profession while creating hate and discontent on Wall Street?

As for the Mrs and the daughters - leave this turd and find the best divorce lawyer to go after him for all that you can get....he not only damaged your marriage (and your daughter's probably won't look at him the same way again) but he put you at risk for any number of STD's.

I'm having a real problem with Probable Cause for the phone tap. I think a whole bunch of defense attorneys would, too. The Feds apparently listened to many, many, many hours before this came up. At what point should they have said, "hey there's no blackmail or corruption here. We're pulling the plug." If this weren't Elliot Spitzer, 9 out of 10 the defense gets the evidence thrown out. Of course, how many times has Elliot done the same thing to generally law abiding white collar types in NY. Pay backs a bitch, but I think Elliot knows it was a bad warrant, and would like to get it tossed.

A. Prostitution is illegal, yes, and I have no problem with his prosecution for breaking laws. But whether it is always immoral for a woman to freely decide to accept money for sex, with her own body after all, is a debatable issue. Coerced prostitution is heinous, always.
B. The point is that we don't know what their sex life was like, or even if they had one. You shouldn't be so quick to judge. Liking or even pursuing girls half his age or any adult age isn't a crime. FYI, all men lust after women 18-25 years old.
C. Again, we know nothing about their marriage, including if they underwent counseling, or if Spitzer's motivation was boredom.

It's a typical female reaction to flay the man mercilessly for infidelity, without knowing any facts. Life isn't black and white.

170 AsianObserver  Tue, Mar 11, 2008 9:55:37pm

I think Lizards are being foolish in not defending Spitzer.

Puritanism is one hell of a powerful arrow in the feminist quiver. Help Puritanism, and you ensure a feminist weapon against male politicians, of whom more are Republican than Democrat.

Without endorsing feminist slander of men, I point out that more men than women will tend to wander, patronise prostitutes, etc. Men are thus more easily attacked with sexual behaviour as a weapon.

Republicans are more heavily male, and more traditional "virile" males at that. Enable puritanism as a means to attack powerful men, and you're sure to harm Republicans (and men) more than Democrats (and women).

Don't do it! The short-term advantage (eliminating Spitzer) isn't worth the long-term liability (of giving loony-left and feminists another anti-male weapon).

Sex life? The matrimonial and sex lives of Giuliani and Gingrich should have remained their own business - and so Spitzer's as well.

Use of government funds? Make him pay it back.

Hypocrisy? So are most prostitution and drug laws. Legitimate the marijuana accusation against Clinton, and you legitimate the cocaine accusation against Bush.

Don't be foolish. Keep politician's matrimonial, sex, and misdemeanor (recreational drug or alcohol use) OUT of the picture.

171 afdad  Tue, Mar 11, 2008 11:18:17pm

re: #170 AsianObserver

You haven't read too much about America have you? Besides, it's not so much puritanism as it's a reflection upon the persons character. That, to me anyway, is very important as if the person is willing to cheat, lie to his wife, and family, what makes you think they wouldn't lie to their fellow citizens?

Screw the moral relativism friend. Thankfully, most of us believe you do the crime, or in this case the HO, you pay the toll over, and above the Ho's fee. In this case of hypocrisy on his part, he needs to resign at a minimum. Hopefully, he ends up getting far worse.

You may need to read some more about America, and the morals of those in what is known as fly-over country. We don't like those political leaders who have a mistress on the side, or cheat on their wives. We're not particularly fond of the French way of doing things, and they apparently look for this quality in their leaders. We don't!

If you'll cheat on your spouse, there is no reason to believe you will not cheat in your job, or position. I certainly do not want a Governor, nor a President that cheats on their wife, and lies to their family in personal matters! If they're willing to do that, they're certainly willing to lie to the public, and are absolutely capable of being, or becoming a criminal.

It gets back to character! If you're of good character, you're less likely to pull the things Spitzwad has done, or Klintoon (spellings intentional) while he was in office for that matter. Someone of good character doesn't mess with anyone under their authority as Clinton did.

Though it did finally provide an example of what many failed to listen to during the original campaign back in 1992, and that was that Bill Clinton was a yellow bellied draft dodging Arkansas lying, no good scum who should have been in prison in the 1970's, or at least had his chicken shit ass kicked so badly he could only wheel himself around like FDR instead of allowed to continue walking the streets of America.

Can you guess I hate these SOB's guts! I'm not a fan of his wife either, but then I happen to hate any progressive socialist bottom feeding scum. Y'all have a nice day now, hear!

I find it hard to believe that nobody's made a pun of "Spitzer Swallow."

I'm 42, I'd love to date a girl half my age....

I'd also love to date a girl so talented she rates $5K/hour. Although I find that VERY hard to imagine.

re: #5 NoSubmission

I really feel for his wife and three daughters. I'm sure the rest of the Spitzer clan can't be too happy either. What a sex pig.

I feel for the three daughters, but I feel no sympathy for his wife. Like Hillary Clinton and Michelle Obama, she's a lawyer, and she's standing by him, encouraging him not to resign, supposedly until a deal is made (some integrity) that can save his hide from the fate that he sent others to enjoy using his power as a district attorney and state attorney general. I'm not sure what it is with leading democrats and their lawyer wives, but they sure give wives a bad name.

You need to see a psychiatrist - and to learn to read English.

FoolsMate:

[Link: WWWrrronnnnnnnnnnng...] ! I would never, ever have sex with an 18 year old girl. I'd give her a little lecture maybe. In fact I consider even 21 off limits - but hey, thats just me !

Read my statement more carefully and you will find I said men lust after women 18 - 25, which is different than saying all men would have sex with them given the opportunity.

Why did Spitzer have to pay for hookers? He couldn't find a mistress like everybody else?
