As to why we don't do this permanently - it saves no energy; modern displays use the same amount of power regardless of what they display.

I see.

Why? Like it's going to save power or something? If you're using the computer to read that page, you're not saving any electricity.

If you're that concerned about your energy usage, shut off your damned computer and get outside. The preachy nature of this stuff is only getting more intolerable on a daily basis and I'm more than amenable to greening my environment. I bought my house to shorten my commute, don't have to drive anywhere as a result, and can go to work by train. I had cfls before they became fashionable to do. I have cars that are relatively fuel efficient. I bought all kinds of insulation to improve my home's efficiencies, and am considering a tankless system for hot water.

Oh, and in the long range, many of those green choices will save me plenty of money - the green that speaks to me.

The preachy types at Google, Goracle, and all the rest talk plenty, but it's all just so much hot air. If they truly believed half the crap they spout off, they wouldn't be flying off all over the world, going and holding major conferences in one of the most remote cities in the world (Bali) that also happens to be in an environmentally sensitive location. They'd teleconference to accept their Nobel Prize crapulence for raising awareness.

Oh, and it doesn't even begin to touch on the junk science that underpins much of what Gore and his ilk are preaching.

Don't forget the fridge. If you leave the fridge door slightly open, that little light stays on. Turning the temperature down on the fridge will ensure nothing gets spoiled, and it also increases your carbon footprint.

You'd need twenty jacuzzis and car dealer-size spot lights to even have a hope of approaching Al Gore's personal household energy consumption - and his kids are adults and have left home ... don't even have the imagination to come up with what Gore must be doing of a day, every day and night to suck up the power he does. The blasphemy keeps on comin'...
Security stepped up as German theatre breaks taboo by staging Satanic Verses

A German theatre is to stage the world premiere of the controversial Salman Rushdie novel The Satanic Verses, breaking a long taboo and prompting fears of a backlash by local Muslims.

The Hans Otto theatre in Potsdam, south-west of Berlin, is due to begin an eight-week run of the stage adaptation of the 1988 novel on Sunday, aiming, said its director, to expose it to a new audience.

Police authorities in the city said security at the theatre and in Potsdam would be increased for fear of attacks by Muslim fundamentalists.

More, please.

You all completely miss the point of this exercise. It's not to save so much as one watt-hour of electricity, but to allow earnest port-siders to flatter themselves by engaging in symbolic nonsense. They'll sit in the dark for an hour and then feel smug and righteous that they've saved the planet, thus giving themselves the right - nay, the duty - to lord their morally superior views over you and to impress them onto you via legislation.

For the left it's all about the symbolism and their good intentions. It proves they care! And that's all they need to feel better about themselves, because it's more difficult to come up with a real solution and might require a real sacrifice on their part. No- lets stick with the symbolism of our good intentions. It only requires them to ignore their own hypocrisy- and they're well versed in that.

OT, but since we’re on the subject of moonbattery this is apropos

So my brother tells me this morning that President Bush is supposed to give a speech to a non-profit foreclosure assistance corp. in my hometown of Freehold, NJ. So I say, what the hell, lets go support good ol’ Shrub, and see if we can get to see him speak; he, I and my 17 year old sister hop in the car and head off, and about 5 minutes later, arrive at the front of the driveway to the corp., and lo and behold, we find moonbats. Not just any moonbats, but Code-Pinkos standing on top of an abridged bus (i.e. short bus) colored red and blue with the words “Hope” and “Change” painted on the side. Lizards, I can only begin to describe my excitement at this sight with a comparison to Homer Simpson when Marge tells him he can have beer and take a nap (“Beer! Beer! Beer! Bed! Bed! Bed!). I sped off to staples and bought poster board and a marker, and the made a sign:

Democrats (heart) Saddam

The moonbats numbered around 50-60 at the most, although there was a contingent of 30-40 patriots waving flags on the other side of the driveway. There were three local news teams around, and one photog caught sight of me cum sign, started laughing and taking pictures with hearty thumbs up from my sibs and I.

I walked right into the heart of the liberal throng with my sign at chest level, and the best description of what transpired is bedlam and apoplexy.

These were the sentiments and actions conveyed:
- “you’re stupid”
- Bush has killed one million Iraqis
- The economy has disintegrated under bush
- One guy with a beret slapped the sign out of my hand, my sister then said, “You guys are really good peace protesters”
- “you’re stupid”

I politely pointed out to a woman who said “you’re stupid,” followed by “Bush lied to the military,” the recent affair of the Dem congressmens’ trip to Iraq underwritten by Saddam and I shit you not she says this:

“Well I follow all the news, I read the Time [NY] every day, and haven’t heard of that” while laughing at me, and I say “That’s your problem.”

Lizards, I cannot reasonably convey how much moonbat pwnage went on today. I may have to start a blog just to document the event.

Google...so anyway...I'm looking to buy an aluminum fishing boat. Anybody got an idea? 16 -19 ft range.

Depends on the size of lake you want to fish on. It's better to have the 16 footer with a max'ed out outboard then a underpowered 19 footer.

285 George guy  Fri, Mar 28, 2008 7:54:43pm

The Prophet George's Legitimate Wisdom for the Environment:

*Stop recycling everything except metal. More resources are consumed fueling the trucks to gather this stuff up than is worth trying to reclaim most garbage. The exception is the various kinds of metals, because melting them down is a simple affair compared to the process of reclaiming paper, plastic, or even glass, so it's economically efficient to recycle metals, generally speaking, because the costs of getting recycled metals are generally competitive with the costs of freshly mined and smelted stuff.

* Use more paper and don't recycle it. You don't have to be really wasteful with paper, just be more liberal in its use. Adopt higher standards of cleanliness in the bathroom, learn art forms like drawing and origami, and try to articulate your wishes in more long-winded memos and cute signs taped to doors. Using more paper means the paper companies' tree farms have to grow more trees, and more trees are good for the environment, especially young trees because they grow the fastest and therefore soak up CO2 the fastest.

*Single people are generally speaking a waste of housing space. Our experts have come up with a radical new form of living arrangement in which a responsible man seeks out a responsible woman and proposes a lifetime commitment in which they not only share appliances and living space, but also they can share a bed and go about the business of producing children, who can possibly at a much later time seek the same kind of commitment with other people but not necessarily, and all these people together can form an extended network for sharing personal resources, leading to a much reduced level of waste.

*And now a modest proposal for cranking up development in biodiesel: Take large bulldozer-like vehicles that we'll call "Scoops" for a nice catchy name, out to places like Berkely and gather the ingredients...
...and give yourself 20 lashes with a bamboo cane if you thought I was being serious on this point.

Over spring break, we visited my out-laws and I noticed they had a bunch of CF bulbs.

I asked my wife about it and supposedly they can't find 'regular' bulbs anymore.

They aren't tree huggers, so I have no reason to not believe it...

BTW, this is just outside of San Antonio, TX.

Regular incandescent bulbs are plentiful everywhere ..and considerably cheaper then CF's. Maybe they don't want to be mistaken for moonbats and they fabricated the story.

In my area (Ottawa) there's a one hour dark period planned for 8-9pm tomorrow evening. It's receiving some heavy promotion. No idea who's paying for the ads...

Our plans are to turn on all the lights in the house, all 4 TVs, the washer and dryer, the oven, and crank the thermostat with front and back doors open, the stereo blasting... Outside the front lights and both deck lights will all be on and we have two 250 watt spots to put in the front yard. My wife has also suggested wading through the snow to plug in the Christmas lights that remain strewn in two of our trees. Am I forgetting anything obvious? I want to be as ummm responsible as possible, here. Maybe I should idle the car for the hour?

We were in fact in Conakry during the World Cup (Football/Soccer) - what year was that? 2002ish? The World Cup AFTER France won it - it was the following one when France lost big time - eliminated early on (too much posing for photos and not enough practice).

Anyway, the power was on and off-off-off all month, but they got it back on for the Senegal versus someone match. The entire country sat down, huddled in front of the very very few TVs available, all stoked all excited. There was power - yay! They turned on the match, there was the referee's starting whistle, the player running up to kick the ball and ...fritzzzt!
The citizenry got up en mass in fury, ran outside, picked up bricks, chunks of cement, rebar and headed for the closest substation.
Power was miraculously restored - and was provided PERFECTLY for the duration of the World Cup matches.
Amazing what the fear of sudden death will do to motivate the utilities staffers.

386 Purple Prose  Fri, Mar 28, 2008 8:14:52pm

It's dark days for Europe. We think that people are reasonable. We think people are flexible. We think people can accept the status quo of a liberal society that allows them everything and live their lives according to their own moral codes without trying to coerce others into accepting their beliefs. We think that freedom is universally viewed by people who are unmolested by immediate threats as the highest and most exalted state of being.

Wrong. Wrong. Wrong.

There have always been fascists and there always will be. The fascists of yesteryear are gone. Those who remain are marginalized freaks, with no power and no hope of power. But we see a cryptic fascist coming out of the shadows, encouraged and empowered by the high price of oil and the attendant Islamist trickle-down. Islamofascists don't need much encouragement, because Islamism is their creed and Islamism is a fascist ideology. But there is a convergence of calamities that make them more of a threat than they should be, even with their oil-backed money.

They have the Muslim Brotherhood legacy: the revival of aggressive Wahhabism, just the activist form of the latent jihadism already present in their religious texts. They have the growing closeness between Sunni and Shiite Islamists. They have the weakness and appeasement mentality of so much of the multiculturally diseased West. They smell the blood of weak and inconsistent policies and actions in Europe, the US and Israel. And, of course, they have the money of their oil-engorged Sunni and Shiite benefactors.

The world will go dark, as Google Europe has, unless we shine light on the Islamofascism that about to engulf us. It is the 11th hour.

It wasn't the actual intercoursing the picnic table that caused the trouble, it was the fact he was doing it in the backyard. Always remember, when doing perverted and deviant acts, to do them in the privacy of your basement.

You have to be careful how you clean those up if they break...

Each CFL contains about 5 milligrams of mercury. That’s enough for state environmental agencies to recommend complicated and expensive cleanups for accidental bulb breaks in homes.

The Maine DEP no longer recommends such an expensive cleanup process, but now suggests a 14-point cleanup plan.

Wrong link in other post. Here's what to do if you break one of those bulbs...

What if I accidentally break a fluorescent lamp in my house?

The lamp contains a small amount of mercury, but you can clean this up yourself if you do the following:

* Do not use a vacuum cleaner to clean up the breakage. This will spread the mercury vapor and dust throughout the area and could potentially contaminate the vacuum.
* Keep people and pets away from the breakage area until the cleanup is complete.
* Ventilate the area by opening windows, and leave the area for 15 minutes before returning to begin the cleanup. Mercury vapor levels will be lower by then.
* For maximum protection and if you have them, wear rubber gloves to protect your hands from the sharp glass.
* Carefully remove the larger pieces and place them in a secure closed container, preferably a glass container with a metal screw top lid and seal like a canning jar.1 A glass jar with a good seal works best to contain any mercury vapors inside.2
* Next, begin collecting the smaller pieces and dust. You can use two stiff pieces of paper such as index cards or playing cards to scoop up pieces.
* Pat the area with the sticky side of duct tape, packing tape or masking tape to pick up fine particles. Wipe the area with a wet wipe or damp paper towel to pick up even finer particles.
* Put all waste and materials into the glass container, including all material used in the cleanup that may have been contaminated with mercury. Label the container as “Universal Waste - broken lamp.”
* Remove the container with the breakage and cleanup materials from your home. This is particularly important if you do not have a glass container.
* Continue ventilating the room for several hours.
* Wash your hands and face.
* Take the glass container with the waste material to a facility that accepts “universal waste” for recycling. To determine where your municipality has made arrangements for recycling of this type of waste, call your municipal office or find your town in this list municipal collection sites (MS Excel format) (pdf format).
* When a break happens on carpeting, homeowners may consider removing throw rugs or the area of carpet where the breakage occurred as a precaution, particularly if the rug is in an area frequented by infants, small children or pregnant women.
* Finally, if the carpet is not removed, open the window to the room during the next several times you vacuum the carpet to provide good ventilation.

Doing test hardware for bleeding edge. Wafer Level Chip Scale Package. Take an IC die, add an insulation layer, run some routes then put solder balls on for mounting to the PCB. 0.3mm pitch on the balls. The test socket is $1500, and only 3 PCB houses in the country can do that fine of board pitch for the thickness of board we use in test.

Bleeding edge is a pain.

re: #426 Nightlight

Right...
Like I'm going to open my windows in January in Minnesota.
Damn windows are frozen shut till at least March!

I hope that guy didn't play sports.

Here's more from the link, explaining the guy's work:
Try not to smile.

Tits created a new and highly influential vision of groups as geometric objects. He introduced what is now known as a Tits building, which encodes in geometric terms the algebraic structure of linear groups. The theory of buildings is a central unifying principle with an amazing range of applications, for example to the classification of algebraic and Lie groups as well as finite simple groups, to Kac-Moody groups – used by theoretical physicists, to combinatorial geometry – used in computer science, and to the study of rigidity phenomena in negatively curved spaces. Tits’s geometric approach was essential in the study and realisation of the sporadic groups, including the Monster. He also established the celebrated “Tits alternative”, which says that every finitely generated linear group is either virtually solvable or contains a copy of the free group on two generators. This result has inspired numerous variations and applications.

re: #564 rawmuse

The truth about Otto Titzling is that he never existed in the first place. Nor did Hans Delving, nor Philippe de Brassiere. They are all fictitious characters invented by Canadian author Wallace Reyburn for his wholly satirical "history" of the brassiere published in 1972, Bust-Up: The Uplifting Tale of Otto Titzling and the Development of the Bra. Reyburn based the names on crude, if memorable, puns — Otto Titzling ("tit-sling"), Hans Delving ("hands delving"), Philippe de Brassiere ("fill up the brassiere")

All this talk of cat bathing! This may be a dumb question, BUT, have I just been blessed with abnormally clean cats throughout my life? I have had three cats, and I have only bathed one of them once in my life - the day after we picked the little guy up from a campground. All three of the little guys have been extremely clean little buggers, and the thought of bathing them has never even crossed my mind.

They have all been indoor cats (mostly). Is this an indoor/outdoor thing, or am I just a dirty bastard with dirty cats?

604 hermeneutics  Fri, Mar 28, 2008 9:10:09pm

Several years ago possums and other critters were eating out of my cat's bowl on the back porch. So I borrowed box-like gadget which would trap the critter without killing it. The food, as bait, went inside and the animal was supposed to be tempted by it. It worked.

The first night I caught a possum. I took it to the back of a shopping center in the trunk to release it. Standing in my cute, lil' high heels, I could barely lift the damn trap out of the trunk. I finally got it out, put it on the ground, and opened the door. Nothing happened.
So I kicked it. Nada.
I shook it. Again, it would not come out.
Finally, I picked up the box, and shook it upside-down. Nothing happened for about 30 seconds and then, PLOP -- the critter landed on my feet. I thought it was dead. I didn't know what to do so I stood there, frozen in fear, trying not to pee in my nylons.

Finally, it rolled over and sauntered away.

Still shudder when thinking of it.

Moral of the story -- DO NOT TRY TO TRAP THE THINGS THAT EAT YOUR CAT"s FOOD;.

"I think that those people [global warming skeptics] are in such a tiny, tiny minority now with their point of view, they're almost like the ones who still believe that the moon landing was staged in a movie lot in Arizona and those who believe the world is flat."--Al Gore, in an interview with "60 Minutes" to air March 30

Put cat in kitchen sink, wear long sleeves welding leathers. Use sprayer to wet cat thoroughly. Apply Dawn dish washing detergent to strip the oil, lather, rinse. Apply baby shampoo so the cat smells good, lather, rinse. Towel off cat. Put cat into carrier and train blow dryer on cat for at least 30 minutes. Remove cat and manually use blow dryer to dry underside. Let cat go and count your scratches.

Just came back from 17k - 1,200 chip deficit to win a poker tourmanent.

Had a very sneaky pair of fours that turned into trips against the chip leader's doubled-up AK; let him bet into me on the turn, then raise me on the river for nearly half my chips. I doubled his bet, leaving a tasty 965 left in my stack. He eyed my chip stack, drew down, long and hard on a filterless cigarette, and poured the last swig of his whiskey into his gaping maw; raised me the rest of my holdings.

I grinned slightly, and exhaled throught my mouth and nose to combat the cloud of smoke heading in my direction; sipped defiantly on my double-tall, half-caf, half-skim, no-foam latte. The rest of my chips tumbled onto the pile as I turned over a 9-4.

"Beautiful, baby," I clucked. His ire was clearly visible in the throbbing vein in his forehead.

"Moriarty! Start the car!"

Yay for nukes. We almost managed to get that here in Southern Ohio. Had the plant built and everything then the enviro-idiots got the project closed. If my grid were on nuclear power, I'd have the thermostat cranked to 80 degrees instead of 60.

[Link: www.warmthoughts.com...]

Here is the ask.com page from my "where does U.S. oil come from search:"

[Link: www.ask.com...]

According to everything that I am seeing, 75% of our national oil consumption comes from non-OPEC nations. 40% (according to one source) is produced domestically. Canada, Mexico and Nigeria, among a handful of others, are our primary producers.

I'm going to go back to my drinking now. Quite frankly, this is just too much thinking on a night when I am trying not to think about the wholesale abandonment of Europe to a bunch of Mohamedan thugs. Oh beer...

What about termites? Apparently they're pretty naughty when it comes to global warming.

Can we use pesticides? Maybe moonbaticides would kill the termites and make the LLLs happy at the same time.

But, as we all know, LLLs can never be happy because they know that they're guilty (of something, who knows what?).

I am sure Charles and other jihad-critical bloggers get death threats all the time. Most of them are just bluster by anonymous losers. You can't cave into that. It's something nations have learned, when they say they don't give into the demands of kidnappers or hijackers. In this case, it was probably no more than a threat from some anonymous Internet agent with an IP address from Riyadh or Islamabad. Nothing more.

About this time last night (morning) I hear something at my front door. I figure its my oldest looking for a place to hang his hat for the night - but the door ain't opening. Now I'm thinking hes been a partying and can't find the key hole. So I go to the front door. Luckily I decided to peel back the curtain first before opening. I was face to face with one of the biggest 'coons I've ever seen ! It climbed up the screen, was standing on the doors cross member and trying to dig his way in through the screen ! He didn't budge or give up on his mission -even when I clicked the porch light on ! I'm a hair shy of 6'5" and I mean I was staring at him through the glass
face to face ! Finally I rapped on the glass hard a few times and he took off. I usually have the lights on all night at both entrances should I have human company stop by. Now I will be sure to have 'em on every night.
I can't help think what would have happened if my son had walked up to the door in the dark and went to put the key in the door. And screw the energy nuts. Got 'em both burning now + 36" in L.R., PC, lamp, washer going (soon to be followed by dryer) 20" in kitchen and twin 20" in bedroom. I don't like to miss a thing as I walk from room to room ! Already nuked dinner, have used my cup at a time water heater at least 3 times while sitting here - 2 cups of Joe earlier and enjoying a Swiss Miss Dark Chocolate (with heavy whipped cream) as we type. BTW, if you like chocolate, especially dark chocolate, this Swiss Miss Dark is a steal at .99 cents a box ! I can't believe how good it is ! Will never go back to "milk". Oh, forgot to mention, I have electric heat and an electric stove and dryer - in fact the whole damn house is electric ! Have a propane back up "wood stove"
just n case. Can't think of anything else to fire up unless I really wanted to just waste electricity ! Wait, my 160 watt Sansui 9000DB is calling and his little brother (Sansui 8080) is calling too ! Has to be good for a few extra KWH's if I can settle on some background music (getting sick of about everything). Haven't done Brubeck in quite awhile - might fill the bill. Take 5 anyone ?

What we need to use is the Chucky Schlupner method.
Ol' Coach Chucky (a basketball legend in certain remote hills) used to tell his teams to go ahead and foul on every play whenever they were facing superior competition...which was about 95% of the time. "They can't call 'em all," said he. "There's only so much air in a referee's whistle."
Now, it's true that there were a few games where the whole team fouled out. But in the long run Chucky racked up decades of winning seasons with the sorriest looking players you ever saw in your life.
If the publishers in the West would flood the media with Mo-cartoons, Fitnas, and such on a daily basis, the spell would be broken. They can't seethe them all, can they?
...Well, maybe they could. But I think the rarity of our "offenses" makes us most vulnerable.

Before I went out to get a drink, we all sat around and talked about baby names. Interesting give and take, good discussion.

First time everyone actually sat around the living room talking.

I'll give Liveleak credit for hosting Fitna and getting it out there, but removing Fitna while leaving all the jihadi propoganda videos up (most of which are American troops getting hit by ied's) is bullshit. Either put Fitna back up or take the jihadi propaganda down.

Then add the guitar harmonics...

*ping-pung*

... a little contact high from what was being smoked in front of us...

BTW, even Google knows that on LCD monitors, black consumes more energy than white:

Reducing climate change by saving energy is an important effort we should all join, and that's why we're very glad to see the innovative thinking going into a variety of solutions. One idea, suggested by the site called "Blackle" (which is not related to Google, by the way, though the site does use our custom search engine), is to reduce energy used by monitors by providing search with a black background. We applaud the spirit of the idea, but our own analysis as well as that of others shows that making the Google homepage black will not reduce energy consumption. To the contrary, on flat-panel monitors (already estimated to be 75% of the market), displaying black may actually increase energy usage. Detailed results from a new study confirm this.

Oh, but we narcissists simply cannot resist pointless empty gestures that stroke our own egos!

Now that you mention timeline, I'm not sure it was the Grace Under Pressure tour when that particular experience occured. That one was '89, or '90.
