Obama: 'I Won't Be Smiling'

Wed, Apr 2, 2008 at 12:58:35 pm PDT

Obama snaps at an annoying photo-seeker: Scenes from the pool report: ‘I won’t be smiling’.

I think what we're seeing here is someone who’s beginning to feel the pressure. Obama could have given the guy a photo in much less time than it took him to throw this little tantrum in front of CBS’ cameras.

Considering how annoying photographers can be, I would have to agree. Just because you're a public official doesn't mean you have to stop for a picture everytime you're asked.

6 lawhawk  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:03:53pm

Nice. No regard for how this is going to come off to someone who might consider voting for the guy. Tone deaf.

But completely par for the course given that he didn't have any problem with Rev. Wright for 20+ years.

Obama should have just taken the photo and moved on....that guy is quite the pest.

When I was Queen of Mauritania, the photographers were always coming after me. Day and night, night and day. I had them all thrown in the dungeon.

I would just have them impaled every 1/2 mile along the Apian Way.

Seriously though, they're is enough wrong with Obama that I'm not going to worry about how he deals with an annoying photographer.

21 godfrey  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:07:47pm

Who filmed the encounter, time after time? CBS was just on hand? Or was this guy a plant?

22 Ben Hur  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:07:53pm

Everyone relax.

That guy (pic stalker) is annoying.

23 Charles  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:07:58pm

Notice he says: "You're an Ebay guy." He thinks the guy's going to sell the photo.

24 Sharmuta  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:08:14pm
Obama: Yea well whatever. Just take it. I won't be smiling. Because you're wearing me out. ....No no, you've been really rude about it. Just take a shot.

Mr. obama- you do realize that as President, you'll have much worse to deal with than people wanting their picture taken with you. A simple photo hound wears you out? How are you going to be able to handle an international crisis if one guy with a camera wears you out?

re: #16 Charles

You'd think he'd have a response routinized by this point. He's not used to fielding annoying questions? Imagine him at a press conference.

Wait, scratch that. Obama press conferences would involve everything from fawning looks from reporters to uproarious laughter at his lamest jokes.

33 Diamond Bullet  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:10:12pm

There's something oddly fitting about that clip opening with a Honda commercial. Obama reminds me of nothing so much as a used car salesman.

"Focusing your life solely on making a buck shows a certain poverty of ambition. It asks too little of yourself. Because it's only when you hitch your low-mileage 240DL Volvo to something larger than yourself that you realize your true potential. A Volvo like this one right here!"

"It took a lot of blood, sweat and tears to get to where we are today, but we have just begun. Today we begin in earnest the work of making sure that the world we leave our children is just a little bit better than the one we inhabit today. If you sign this paperwork, I can assure future generations that you purchased a 2004 Buick in the best spirit America has to offer."

"My parents shared not only an improbable love, they shared an abiding faith in the possibilities of this nation. They would give me an African name, Barack, or blessed, believing that in a tolerant America your name is no barrier to success. The success of car ownership despite less than perfect credit."

--Barack Hussein Obama

Although I feel sympathy for Obama having to put up with annoying people, and would probably act very much the same way myself, let's not forget he's supposed to be running for President. If he can't deal with an annoying bozo wanting a photo, how's he going to deal with Iran wanting nukes?

39 code red 21  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:10:50pm

The "typical white guy" is a pain in the ass...but public figures should get use to it since these are the little people that they are so fond of. Our local rag had an article about Obamanation going to the Y in Mississippi and not acknowledging the presence of the little people who were also there at the time. So maybe this is just his personality shining through.

40 DesertSage  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:10:58pm

I remember seeing a documentary on Bush (and they had one on Gore) in 2000 on PBS.

WHen at a campaign stop a gentleman of middle eastern appearence approached Bush, stared and just stood there pointing a finger in Bush's face.

Bush extended his hand, and looked a little perplexed.

The Secret Service (my bad, they were guarding Bush, so the SS) got the guy out of there in no time.

Anyone remember the title of that show?

I dont think the guy was a plant. There were plenty of other photographers gathered around at the time. This was just the one that put it on the net.

From the sound of the first snip, this was not Obama's first conversation with the man. At that time he already seemed annoyed. So by the end of the bit, he has pestered Obama four or more times. I think the secret service acted correctly in just walking him away.

76 Ben Hur  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:16:21pm

89 Charles  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:18:30pm

Doesn't matter how annoying the photo guy was -- Obama should have had the presence of mind not to snap like this in front of media cameras. Spend 5 seconds to give the guy a picture, and nobody would have ever noticed. Instead he tried to make an example of the guy.

Yes, he's campaigning -- and that means not doing things like this.

Never question the Obamination of Desolation!

107 PloniAlmoni  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:21:51pm

In the end, I think this makes Obama look pretty good. The photo-seeker was very annoying, everything from his whining to his constant pestering attitude. Obama had the same reaction to him as most viewers will, which makes him look "human" and "just like everyone else." Furthermore, I think Obama "snapped" at this guy just like McCain supossedly "snapped" at the reporter who was asking him questions he already answered on his plane. Meaning they didn't "snap" at all, they just reacted like any normal person would.

Sometimes it's easier to just let the baby have the bottle. In this case, obama should have taken the pic- game over. He'd look gracious dealing with an annoying ass, and the ass goes away happy. No harm, no foul.

Instead- we now have obama acting as big an ass as the photo guy, and one has to wonder how he'd handle real pressure if he can't handle a "paparazzi" type.

No, George Allen used a pejorative word his Italian mother used, and therefore proved he wasn't globally sensitive enough, though Italian-American, to get a pass.

I just watched the whole video, and in this instance I'm actually going to cut Obama some slack: the "photo-seeker" acted like a stalker, and could have been dangerous for all Obama knew. What the guy was asking for was to be in a picture with Obama -- i.e. to be standing next to him. I mean, the photo could have been a set-up -- the guy could have an unsavory past, and could have been hired by the Hillary campaign to get a picture with Obama that could have been later used against him politically. Or, more importantly, the guy could have been a madman/assassin Mark David Chapman-type.

Obama was perfectly within his rights to give the guy the cold shoulder.

133 Catttt  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:27:05pm

OK, the guy bugging Senator Obama was annoying. However, I think Senator O could have handled it better. While I'd have to say I agree with mama and the others who said they have no problem with him snapping at a photographer trying to get a shot (that the press can be extremely pushy and annoying when trying to get a picture isn't exactly a huge secret), I do also think that such a reaction is probably bad form for a politician, who by definition is trying to win a popularity contest and so has to come off as Mr. Likable all the time.

I doubt it will have much of an impact, but it does seem to indicate he's feeling the heat and is well aware that he isn't politically invincible after all - and for that, I think this is worth a smile.

re: #261 Occasional Reader

They
have a very delicate job, and I think they handled it well. Fact is,
Obama DOES have to be out there mingling, kissing babies and shaking
hands. It's not like the USSS is supposed to tackle anyone who gets
within six feet of him.

I got pulled by USSS years ago, went to the range in the morning then went to the boat show. Stopped by a event where Michael Reagan was talking about his boat racing. Being the Presidents son he had a detail. I had a loose jacket buttoned up with a shoulder holster. Guy in suit walks up and put his hand gently on my right arm, and asked very politely to take it back to my car.

He had blocked be from Michael, his hand on my arm would have given him early warning if I tried anything. He was in position to push me out of the venue if I resisted. It was all done very quickly, and not even people standing 2 feet away noticed.

325 Cheeseland  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 1:59:10pm

From the ABC website

Run in #1:
Outside the first shop, on the way in
Man: "Senator, can I have a quick picture with you?"
(Obama has his arm on the guys arm in a very nice way, like he does when he shakes a hand but refuses to take a picture and walks away)
Man: "It will take you two seconds. Don't cram me, I'm not doing anything to anybody. Jesus."

Run in #2:
After the first shop
Man: "Senator, can I get a picture with you?"
Obama: (slightly annoyed) "You are wearing me out brother."
Man: "I got one with Hillary Clinton, and I got one with McCain. Come on Senator, that's not right."

Run in #3:
In the street
Man: "Senator, can I please, a quick one?"
Obama: (very annoyed) "No, you know what, no."
Man: "Can I just say something to you real fast?"
Obama: "Yea, you can."
Man: "I had one with Hillary Clinton and I had one with Senator McCain."
Obama: "I am sure you do. Because when I was trying to talk to some kids –- and, I know, look...
Man: "No, my wife is a school teacher and she was there. She had to go back and that wasn't right. What, won't you just take a picture with me? I'm not asking you for a autograph; it's for my family.
Obama: "Yeah, well, whatever. Just take it. I won't be smiling. Because you're wearing me out. . . No no, you've been really rude about it. Just take a shot."

Obama and the man did not take a shot. The man was still arguing with the Senator when Secret Service stepped in (non confrontationally) to provide the denouement.

Secret Service: (putting a hand between Obama and the man) "That's it."
Man: "No, I'm good. All I want is a picture. That's it."

Annoying camera guy was...well...annoying (was that Jon Lovett?), but could have been handled in less then two seconds by allowing him his picture with the candidate, regardless of whether or not it was E-bay fodder.

Barry Ho's confrontational attitude was not presidential quality and placed his Secret Service detail in an extremely difficult position.

McCain is still the least worst of option.

Sure, you could write it off as a bad day, bad instance, which is more than plausible. My contention in my initial post upthread is that this just looks bad from a perception standpoint and that someone who might be on the fence might look at that and see him blowing off the guy. If you're in a tight race to win the nomination, you've got to do whatever it takes - even if it means stopping for a moment to take a photo with a guy like that. If the USSS thought he was a security risk, they would have whisked him away.

375 Josephine  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 2:10:19pm

re: #112 Charles

Or for that matter - don't give the guy a picture, just shine him on, have the Secret Service quietly move him along. But getting personally annoyed -- bad move.

Obama was so angry he wouldn't even look at the guy.

As for the guy, it sounds like Obama made an appearance to some schoolchildren and the man's wife, a teacher, missed it because she had to leave early. If the wife was really disappointed and asked her husband to make sure he got a photo for her, that might explain his persistence and also how upset he might have felt when Obama kept saying no.

Two or three years ago, my husband and I took our daughter to a concert featuring the top three Canadian Idol contestants. We got there extremely early and were the second group in line. At one point, Rex Goudie came out with a female rep. The woman permitted one group photo of Rex with all four fans who were there (my daughter and three women) and said he would not sign autographs (for four people!). I was really offended because it didn't make any sense to me.

I've seen many pictures of Obama having his picture taken with people in the streets, in restaurants, at the Iowa State Fair, at all kinds of campaign events. He always has a huge smile and appears to be having a great time. That he wasn't willing to stop in this instance says more about how he was approached than it does about him.

My first question is - Why are you seeing all the numerous pics of Obama (pbuh) in all these numerous places? But whatever!

How he was approached has nothing to do with how he should respond. His response as Potus should be balanced at all times, regardless. The man is running for President of the United States - Not Class president.

In college in 1988 I got a job with a subsidiary of American Airlines, and after a few months got flight benefits.

First trip was to LaGuardia.
A texas boy in NYC

First trip to the city on the train from 88th& Broadway in Queens to Times Square station ( my first subway ride ) there was a smelly homeless guy in my car and two guys with Tourettes on the train.
One to my left and one to my right. One was ticking and saying the N word. One was ticking and saying the F word.
The car smelled of urine.
I exited to see Peep shows, 3 card monty and drugs for sale.

427 Attica  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 2:21:35pm

First, Secret Service: I knew a SS guy a few years ago serving under Bush always told me that a lot of them would resign if Hillary became president because they could not know for a fact they would lay down their life for her. Yes, they could have taken care of the guy a lot faster (don't know if it was their or Obama's perogitive that he got so close).

Second: I'm curious as to what the guys angle is. It does appear that Obama knows or is familiar with the guys motivation for a picture. My first response is that the guy is known for setup pics to make politicians look bad. In that case I don't begrudge Obama for not wanting the picture for fear of headlines like "Obama pictured with Child predator" or something.

Third and finally: There is no question he handled it the WORSE way you could. Best being above the fray and/or ignoring him.

A comment here has got me fearfully thinking though: If the reverend didn't dent Obama's image then what will. I has carte blanche. (wasn't there a washington D.C. mayor who was actually videoed with a prostitute smoking crack that was re-elected?)

This was a rookie mistake. Giving the appearance of being annoyed over this makes him look petty. Having difficulty getting a word in through the guy's harangue makes him look weak. Getting into a situation like this in the first place makes him look inexperienced. The videos will be edited down to show just his petulance, and no one will care much whether the "citizen" was out of line. He doesn't have Reagan's easy grace or Nixon's street-smarts, and he can't seem to pull off the pretense that he does.

Obama forgot it all about appearances, and that was dumb, but I doubt it will have much immediate effect. But it's another grain of sand on the balance against him, and they're starting to pile up.

2. It makes us look bad by appearing desperate to make Obama look bad.

I find it hard to believe that Charles posted it with a completely neutral intention, but maybe you are right.

Actually I think (though I could be wrong), Charles places posts, many topics up for discussion, just to see where they will go. I'm amazed at times the direction they take.

I agree. Obama (pbuh) needed Wright and his church to gain the State seat, then the Senate seat. He should have greatly distanced himself from Wright and the Church after that. He did not. That huge error in my book, amongst all the others, makes him unqualified to be president.

498 Promethea  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 2:54:35pm

Just starting this thread, so I don't know what others have said, but I have to defend Obama here.

It's clear that no political figure, whether you love them or hate them, can respond to every request for a photo, especially a posed one. This man's repeated requests for the photo was quite rude, because he wouldn't stop after he'd been told "no."

I can't imagine McCain or any other candidate would put up with this kind of behavior either.

Also, any candidate takes a chance when interacting with the public, and one who is too persistent is already suspect. If I were Obama, or any other candidate, I would try to avoid such an unknown personage. He/she could have a knife, a gun, pepper spray, etc.

499 Iron Fist  Wed, Apr 2, 2008 2:54:41pm

re: #492 Occasional Reader,

Since I didn't sit in Church with them every Sunday, I don't know how many times that particular "fact" was brought up. What disturbs me most about this is all of the defenders Wright has from the establishment Black Church. There are a lot of black people out there who don't know that this is really out there nuttery. I've seen Wright called a Prophet for spewing this nuttery, for God's sake!

Obama knew what was being preached at his Church. You have to. This is on the level of attending Fred Phelps' little convention of nutcases and claiming that you didn't know what was going on.

It doesn't pass the smell test.

Gerldine Ferro was right, BTW. Obama hasn't self-destructed only because the media and the Democrats so badly want a black President. A white guy would have been crucified for this shit.

re: #470 vagabond trader

Yes, those are good reasons not to vote for him. Telling an obnoxious leech photographer to back off doesn't hold the same sway. That's my point.

Taking the larger view, it seems to me that we can preach to the choir, all in agreement about how we don't want Obama in office, and bash the hell out of him in the process. If this is just an echo chamber and we are not concerned with convincing anyone on the fence to change their vote, then that's fine. But if we want to effect the outcome of what might be a very close election then I think our language and tactics have to take the undecided, fence-sitter into account. In other words, someone on the fence is going to be very sensitive to unfair attacks on either candidate. I've always said, keep the discourse on a respectable level, above that of say the KOS kids and then you are an example to the undecided voter that you are fair and principled. I know I sound all self-righteous here, don't mean to be, but I left the Democratic Party because they were so nasty, foul-mouthed and unfair in their rhetoric. Bottom line, I'm voting for McCain, but I think Obama is a respectable man, who despite his unfortunate associations with Reverend Wright, I'm sure wants the best for this country. So I'm not about to go around taking cheap shots at him. We can defeat him on the issues, and his lack of experience, not by silly YouTube sound bites of him getting annoyed at a photographer. I prefer to talk about how great McCain is going to be as President.

You don't know that his daughters ever heard any of Wright's sermons. It's very common, in large churches, for children to leave to go to Sunday School classes during the sermon. In the few clips of services at TUCC that I've seen, I've never seen any children.

Senator Obama sure made a hash of that--could have handled it better by just telling the guy to step off, and letting him (and his goons) know that he would consider any more passive-aggressive forceful whining as a threat. Wasn't the guy also trying to hand the Senator a camera or something? Or was he recording? Yeah, here, just push this button while I go *over there* real quick.
The guy was a complete whack-job, and now looks like a panty-waist nincompoop for all the world to see. And that didn't seem to bother him a bit--he was really off. I kept expecting a scuffle to break out, as one certainly should have, if those security guys had been better.

That Obama can't seem to make himself at home in such a venue (or at least learn to roll with the punches) is a strike against him (he's already ran through the game) in my book. Look, these guys value good, old-fashioned "hey, howaya" politics way more than they do hopey changinesss. Little Suzy had a box of very small kittens that she was trying to give
away, so she had them out on the street corner with a sign "FREE KITTENS"
next to them. Suddenly a long line of big black cars came up with a
Policeman on a motorcycle in front. The cars all stopped and a tall man
stepped out from the biggest car. "Hi, little girl, what do you have there
in the box?" he asked.

"Kittens" Little Suzy says. "They're so small, their eyes are not even
open yet."

"What kind of kittens are they?" he asked.

"Democrats" says Little Suzy. The tall man smiled, returned to his car and
they drove away.

Sensing a good photo opportunity, Sen. Obama called his campaign manager
and told him about the little girl with the kittens.
It was planned that they would return the next day, have all the media
there and tell everyone about these "democrat" kittens.

The next day, Little Suzy is standing out on the corner with her box of
kittens with the "FREE KITTENS" sign and the big motorcade of black cars
pulled up with all the vans and trucks from ABC, NBC, CBS and CNN.

Everyone had their cameras ready and then Sen. Obama got out of his limo
and walked up to Little Suzy. "Now don't be frightened," he said, I just
want you to tell all these nice news people just what kind of kittens you're
giving away today."

"Yes sir," Suzy said, "they are all REPUBLICAN kittens."

Taken by surprise, Sen. Obama said, "But yesterday you told me they were
DEMOCRATS."

Little Suzy says, "Yes, I know. But today, they have their eyes open."

Was Bazza feeling a little cranky and needed a line or two to chill out?

"You're an eBay guy and I know it," Obama says.

This is a very very late comment but I want to say that the twit in the video would never have taken a picture in just a couple of seconds. He would have dorked around for five minutes trying to pose Obama and focus and probably wouldn't have really known how his camera worked and would have wanted to snap several and just one more and yadda ... Obama may well be unsuited for the job but he won't lose any votes because of this video.

BTW the chances of me voting for Obama are less than that of a tornado sweeping through a junkyard and assembling a functioning 747 from the parts therein.

re: #52 Ringo the Gringo

At Venice Beach you can have your picture taken with a life-size, cardboard cut-out of Barack Obama for 5 bucks.

And I'm sure the cardboard cutout has more substance than the real Obama.

I'm not voting for him, but I have no problem with how Obama handled himself. I echo the sentiment that if it was McCain, the guy would've got more than a few harsh words. ;)

The photo-seeker does come across as a pain-in-the-ass. But 'The Amazing Barry' is campaigning........so he should learn to deal with it more appropriately.

re: The Honorable Omnipotent Head Muckety-Muck Rev. Wright....
For The Amazing Barry to not recall such racist rantings while he sat in the pew for 20 years is akin to a 'deadhead' not recalling 'Trucking' or 'Alabama Getaway' after following the Grateful Dead all over the country.
This was The Amazing Barry's "I didn't inhale" moment.

The The Honorable Omnipotent Head Muckety-Muck Rev. Wright is a racist.
The Amazing Barry is a liar.

I can't believe that the Secret Service let this guy tag along side Obama for so long.

re: #365 republic

Most of my extended family still uses the "N" word, and they are staunch Democrats, racist, sexist, homophobic to the core, which is why I don't associate with them, as little as possible.

You can pick your friends, but you can't pick your relatives. I can sympathize...

So you don't think his response played well?

No. Take a look at the footage. Turn the sound off and look at it. You can tell that he is arrogant, and you can tell that he's a little bit angry, and you can tell he's very dismissive.

This is an old Reaganesque thing of watching the news with sound off. I remember a review of a half dozen or so "scathing" news pieces that if you turn off the sound they looked like Reagan campaign ads. The press didn't get.

The words are transitory, but the images live on.

Now the photo is now worth something! ( This little episode is hitting the radio talk shows. ) Nicely handled, Mr Obama! The more I see him, the more I hear him, the more I read about him, it is becoming very clear that Obama's judgment is truly pathetic.

Clearly no one this rude could be elected president:

That's a lot of trouble for someone to go to in order to get a picture that may sell for $4.95 on eBay. Check the current prices on Obama images.

560 Checker77  Thu, Apr 3, 2008 9:50:44am

The dude was being an ass, no means no. At the same time, Obama should have just taken the picture, it was poor form, or was Obama afraid of the annoying white guy?

561 iowavette  Thu, Apr 3, 2008 10:26:49am

We should start a pool to determine which cracks first, BO or MO. Then, who can get closest to the date of the meltdown. My money's on Mo. She's an angry, bitter woman. I'm thinking mid Junish.

re: #252 Last Mohican

Yeah, I think they hung him out to dry a little bit. The Secret Service can make embarrassing people disappear a lot faster than that if they want to.

Exactly what I was wondering...if he'd instructed his security to deal with people like this, he wouldn't have had to say anything at all.
