-RetweetFBI Still Advertising on Pro-Terrorist Sites

Mon, Apr 7, 2008 at 9:58:28 am PDT

The Investigative Project on Terrorism asks a simple question: For the Record: Seriously, What is the FBI Doing?

In February, we exposed the latest FBI (and CIA) outrage, advertising for recruits in a pro-terrorist, anti-American magazine, the Washington Report on Middle East Affairs. Both of our top national security agencies had placed online advertisements on the webpage of a magazine that included a hagiography to a terrorist the FBI had worked almost a decade to investigate and prosecute, Palestinian Islamic Jihad operative Sami Al-Arian.

Just over a month later, it is clear that the FBI has learned nothing. The agency is advertising for recruits in the Arab American News, another publication with a long history of support for terrorism, terrorists and terrorist organizations. The current edition has an editorial titled, “Let our people go!,” under an ad banner recruiting for the FBI (which also appears on the home page of the website), about accused Iraqi spy Muthanna al-Hanooti, which states:

Arab American political activist Muthanna al-Hanooti was arrested and jailed this week by federal officials upon arrival at Detroit Metropolitan Airport returning from a trip to the Middle East. The following day he was charged with two counts of conspiracy and three counts of lying to the FBI about working for agents with the Iraqi Intelligence Service under Saddam Hussein. (emphasis added)
The editorial goes on to state:
We see a man who worked tirelessly trying to prevent a catastrophe for his homeland and for his new country. We see a guy who, rather than pick up a gun and kill somebody to reach his political goals, chose to participate in the American political system because he believed in it. He believed justice would be served if only more people knew the real story of what was going on in Iraq.
So there you have it. The FBI is advertising for recruits in a publication which proclaims the innocence of an alleged Iraqi spy accused of lying ... to the FBI, and claims that being a paid intelligence asset of Saddam Hussein’s Baathist regime is participating “in the American political system.”

This seems appropriate to me. Could I infiltrate wacko groups like these? Not a chance. You've got to get people close to the action. Could people that you recruit in this fashion be "double-agents"? Absolutely. Managing these sorts of problems are what the spying game is all about.

I remember rocking with the commies in the "American Lawyers Guild" over just such a thing. same old smelly hippes in the ALG, and they wanted the armed forces off campus, yadda yadda. I ripped them a gaping new one in a letter to the editor of the law school's paper.

they did not like me much after that. heh. did a similar thing when Abbie Hoffman (accompanied by a much younger and less famous (then) Ron Kuby) came to speak at the school at the request of the smelly hippies (I went to school in MASS, so, that probably answers a few questions right there). the topic was the evilness of the CIA.

Me and a couple of like-minded fellow students again did much damage. I heard Abbie whisper under his breath "shit, I thought this was supposed to be massachusetts man!" when the more vocal among us started chanting "answer the question", when I asked him WTF was he talking about and was he advocating the abolition of the CIA.

Ah,...fond memories... :)

O/T

Just in from Reuters (I'm cherrypicking, of course):

Gallup Survey Reports what 1.3-billion Muslims Think

While admiring Western values, many Muslims feel they are not respected by the West and that the values the West espouses, such as democracy, are only given lip service when it comes to applying them in the Muslim world.

A recent example was the 2006 election in the Palestinian territories, which the Islamist movement Hamas won in a free and fair poll. The United States and Israel have since done much to ignore the result and try to push Hamas out of office.

Just because you elect someone doesn't make it right - I call this Chamberlain Syndrom, the belief that any duly-elected government has the right to do what it pleases free of criticism from outsiders. If Israel elected some fanatical right-wing party whose sole missions was the eradication of every man, woman and child in Gaza and the West Bank, I think we'd hear a little hue and cry from those areas about it.

83 RememberSekhmet?  Mon, Apr 7, 2008 11:03:32am

1. The software that places some banner ads is, well, stupid software. I see Muslim dating sites on banner ads at Frontpage all the time. People think computers are smart. They are actually very stupid. the algorithms that determine what ad to place on a site can't tell a positive mention of a thing from negative mentions. It just sees relevant words and places an ad. If software is placing these ads, it's nothing the FBI is doing

2. If 1 is not the case, keep these next two points in mind: Nothing beats a native speaker. While there is a potential to get double-agents, an earnest FBI agent who speaks native Arabic or Farsi can save ones butt. There are metaphors, turns of phrase, and all that don't translate exactly. Did Abdul just order Akeem to kill Akbar, or just to intimidate him? How would Abdul phrase what he said in either case? If the term that usually means "intimidate" in this context has come to mean "kill," can a native speaker along with a linguist make that case, so that the FBI wiretap can be used in the case against Abdul?

3. We have all seen campaigns where the point was to create an ad, and dare certain hostile media entities to run it. What would it say if the site refused to carry the FBI ad? Isn't this another way for the FBI to say, "we're watching you...?"

There is a special provision in the Tax Code that was written in such a way that the only trust that qualifies is the Kennedy family trust. Saves them tons of money. It was quietly inserted in the Tax Code in the late 1940's by a Senator who was a friend of Joe Kennedy, Sr.

Will these beers be OK now that they've been re-refrigerated or are they hosed because they got warm?

The interviewer asks him, "Have you been in the service?"
Yes," he
says. "I was in the armed forces for three years."
The interviewer says,
"That will give you extra points toward employment" and then
asks, Are you
disabled in any way?"
The guy says,"Yes, 100%. A mortar round exploded near
me and blew my testicles off."
The interviewer tells the guy, "OK" I can hire
you right now. The hours are from
8:00 AM till 5:00 PM
You can
start tomorrow. Come in at 10:00 AM.
The guy is puzzled and says, "If the
hours are from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM , then
why do you want me to come in at
10:00 AM"?
"This is a government job", the interviewer says. "For the first
two hours we stand around scratching our balls. No point in you coming in for
that..."

That was a excellent question about trust funds. I actually wrote it down because now I want to look into it. I know that University trust funds have to release quarterly (4 times a year) statements that list their top investments, not sure about trusts funds for individuals/families. I'll send out some emails to a couple of my trader friends and see if I can get some answers

Charitable trusts have to provide information concerning their assets, expenditures, and other items, such as who gets compensation and how much. The annual form is a 990.

Private trusts, as for a family or an individual, do not have to make any public disclosures.

I have a serious question. Before going to our softball game last week I accidentally grabbed my 18-beer cooler instead of the big one. One of the other guys also brought beer. I forgot about the 6 in the back of my Explorer (SUV! HAHAHA, environmental wackos!) and they got warm.

Will these beers be OK now that they've been re-refrigerated or are they hosed because they got warm?

short answer is that if it's domestic swill you won't notice the difference, but if it's a fine beer, you probably will. that make sense? :)

The advertising image is located on the news site, not the FBI's so they're not using the image to gather anything. Sadly, the link itself appears to go through the arab news site as well, so it's unlikely that the FBI is able to gather any information about click-throughs. They're totally dependent upon whatever arabamericannews.com provides them. So the utility of this ad for anything other than straight-up advertising is driven by the specifics of the FBI's information exchange with arabamericannews.com.

I'm wondering about Trust Funds across the board.

Charitable trusts (and/or foundations) are completely different animals from trusts for a family or individual. Charitable trusts have to make disclosures, private trusts do not. Charitable trusts pay no taxes, providing they stay within certain guidelines. Private trusts pay federal (and state) income taxes on essentially the same basis as individuals. Private trusts are about keeping control of money or assets, they don't do anything to reduce taxes. (Obviously there are exceptions to everything in the tax code, but that's the simple answer.)

OT: More torch protests

By the time it reached the Arc de Triomphe and descended the Champs-Elysées, the torch was once again carried by an athlete but was barely visible from the heavily guarded pavement amid a dense escort of officers and police vans. A helicopter circled above as a mix of tourists, cheering supporters waving Chinese flags and protesters responding with chants demanding "freedom" for Tibet crowded behind metal barriers lined by paramilitary police officers. A small truck decorated in the Olympic logo and carrying a percussion band was almost inaudible.

I fear that vodka made in Texas would fall into the same category as hot sauce made in New York City.

I guess it's time to remind folks of the "official" beer of LGF - Porkslap Pale Ale (if only in name - the taste wasn't nearly satisfactory).

that was a cool site, very funny. the weiss beer they featured in one part looked tempting.

re: #122 chicagodudewhotrades

It seems like the President has been pushing hard on the US-Colombia Free Trade Agreement today. He is sending it to Congress and they have 90 days to do something with it. I'm wondering what his motivation is. Does he truly want to help Colombia, does he truly believe in free trade (i do) or does he want to give McCain a campaign issue? Or , is it a combo of all 3 reasons? Just wondering

I may be wrong, but I think he really wants this. Bush has had, IMHO, an excellent rapport with Colombia. The only thing previous admins have (seemingly) cared about is stopping the drug traffic. Allowing for overstatement, Clinton didn't care if FARC was terrorizing Colombians, murdering them in the 10's of thousands; all he cared about was the drug traffic. Bush...noticeably after 9/11... has shifted American policy in Colombia by concentrating on FARC as a terrorist organization, which it emphatically is. His priority has been to help Colombians stop the FARC's attacks on Colombians, period. He has shifted the perspective by seeing the drug traffic as a income source for terrorists, rather than as the main thing.
For the first time in ages, American policy in Colombia has been clear-sighted and in line with Colombia's chief concerns. The results have been very, very good.
Bush is determined to follow up with economic help based on a free-market approach, rather than by cash payments of "foreign aid." This is also what the current president of Colombia (a fantastic guy, BTW) wants.

Maybe Bucktown, maybe Andersonville, maybe Old Irving, maybe Wicker Park. I lose track of all these new-fangled names anyway; it was so easier when you could just call them "the slums."

HA! My family is from Andersonville - near Swedish Covenant hospital, North Park college, and of course the great Swedish bakery on Clark Street. It used to be nice - now it has gone thru some changes. Lots of the Swedes moved to the burbs.

Ironically enough, since none of the aforementioned have exactly been military juggernauts for a very long time.

The Austrians and Germans are no slouches in the gun design & manufacture biz, either.

I agree. Most of Brno's money came from production of German designs. A Brno Mauser from the interwar period is typically built with much more craftsmanship and quality than any other Mauser rifle, although to be fair they were not being bombed at the time.

The Italian firearms (non-military, for the most part) are just amazingly beautiful, and, unlike most Italian cards, superior in use as well.

I have never been overly impressed with any of the European weapons mfgs. I agree that the German/Czech weapons are very capable, but, they are not any more reliable or accurate than American weaponry.

Italians however, nothing beats Italian design. Not in the arts, architecture, food, even wines, and other engineering issues, the Italians shine. Don't know how they do it, but, when Italians set out to make something the best out there, they are hard to beat. (I'm not talking about economy cars now...)

Isn't Congress still investigating the NY FBI Arabic translators who were giving out candy to celebrate 9/11? At least I never read of this investigation coming to a conclusion of any sort. What's to investigate this long? Either they did or they didn't.
The FBI, I believe, is an agency with deeply ingrained institutional antisemitism. I doubt anyone will dispute this. They've cooked up the AIPAC case (all developments are hush-hush) that has been going nowhere for years... They refused to hire all Arabic-speaking Jews who offered their services in the wake of 9/11; yet they have an ongoing need for native Arabic speakers. So they have to recruit them _somewhere_, after all.

234 gunjam  Mon, Apr 7, 2008 7:17:53pm

I am puzzled at the dearth of mentions in this thread of FBI Director Robert Mueller, who -- not only is a supreme putz -- but also appears to be a master at flying under the radar, thereby escaping the hard glare of publicity.

Why this man has been given a virtual carte blanche by the conservative(sic) blogosphere for the past five years is beyond me.

It could be argued that he is largely responsible for 9-11.

And, yet, not a week had passed following 9-11 when Mueller was cautioning us not to act in an anti-Arab or anti-Muslim manner.

The PUTZ! He should have been saying: We vow to get these bastards!

Oh, and President Bush deserves "credit" for having permitted Mueller to remain at his post since the 9-11 fiasco.

Leadership, anyone?

I have had this suggested to me previously. I see little in the FBI's track record of the past five years to support your position.

What is your explanation for the fact that the FBI also uses CAIR personnel for training sessions on "Muslim sensitivity training," or some similar dreck?
