oslo messianism

Mon, Jun 10, 2002 at 6:23:46 pm PDT

Charles Krauthammer gave a speech last night in Jerusalem, sponsored by Bar-Ilan University: Israel has abandoned Oslo messianism.

UPDATE: Thanks to the mysterious E. Nough, here’s a page where you can listen to Krauthammer’s speech, in Windows Media Format. It’s about 30 minutes. I’m halfway through, and I’m utterly blown away. Go. Listen. Put the time aside.

Bar-Ilan University has also set up a page where you can hear Krauthammer's speech in streaming audio. It's about 30 minutes in length, and Microsoft's Windows Media player is required to hear it.

I'm hoping they'll have a transcript of the speech on the same page soon.

Not that it matters, but is Krauthammer Jewish? No one seems to know. I've heard he is and I've heard he isn't.

'Not that it matters, but is Krauthammer Jewish? No one seems to know. I've heard he is and I've heard he isn't. '

His idioms and pronunciation would suggest someone who learned hebrew in jewish school as a child, rather than someone who learned hebrew in a theological school.

Krauthammer must have overheard me. I have comapred Peres to Shabtai Tzvi. The Israeli left was seized by a dementia, Jews cannot afford to live in. They projected their own desire for peace onto the enemy which was nothing more than a wolf in sheep's clothing.

That wolf has now been unleashed with a fury and it is preying daily on Jewish lambs.

Thanks God, Israel has been woken up from its delusion before it is too late. It astounds me that Peres is still aloud to parade around pompously and be treated with any respect after he has lead the country to the brink of the abyss. It is under his traitorous guidance and linkage with the terrorist PLO that Israel has been placed in its most precarious and deadly situation ever.

Peres should be brought up on charges of treason and not be allowed to squirm out of this one. Imagine, arming the Palestinians with 4,000 Khalishnkov assault rifles. What police force in the world is armed with assault rifles? Arafat probably cvouldn't believe he got away with that one, making his enemy arm him for the final assault. He must have thought the Jews wanted to die when they forked over those weapons. Why didn't Peres give him an artomic bomb also to ensure equilibrium in the region? All in the name of peace right?

There are still Jews on the left who still are sleepwalking like drunken bears. Mullah Lehrner of the Tikkun Magazine, still espouses his tired sixties radicalism. Obviously, he droppped one too many LSD tablets at Haight-Ashbury.
Time for those Jews to wake up andmell the coffee. The Arabs are every bit as bad as the Nazis. They are playing from the same handbook and bent on the extermination of every single Jew. While the Arabs can afford to lose thousands, the Jews cannot. Time to transfer the entire Arab population of the West Bank to other Arab countries from which they originate and secure Israel's future peace now. That is the only secure and just peace option for Israel.

Wake up and smell the coffee. It's black.

His "rebbe"? Yeah. Question answered. Thanks Michael. ;)

Love this guy. He once devoted his Wash Post to sholosh suedos (The third Sabbath meal) from the column it seemed he grew up Orthodox

Bar-Ilan University is not in Jerusalem. This was a award ceremony honoring Krauthammer, given _by_ Bar-Ilan but taking place in the King David Hotel in Jerusalem. I was there. (So were Bibi, Natan Sharansky, Effi Eitam, Dore Gold, plus Bill Kristol and Leon Kass.) It was a marvelous talk and I'm glad it's already been posted.

Krauthammer is Jewish. I believe his parents were originally from Alsace, but he grew up in New York City.

I.M.: Thanks for the correction. The Jerusalem Post article is a bit misleading on this point.

Aaron: Quite a few European police routinely carry submachine guns.

If you go to Paris or Germany, you'll see traffic cops armed with them, as well as the odd foot patrol.

I've seen 'em with my own eyes. I had a hard time believeing it after seeing US police with pistols and unarmed Bobbies in London.

But assault rifles are more firepower even than those SMGs.

Silly Peres.

Krauthammer is one of the most intelligent observers of the passing parade. As a result his thoughts on events surrounding the present Israeli crisis are of great value. His deep understanding of Jewish history and the various religious and cultural strands that weave in and out of it is what makes this speech an invaluable contribution to our comprehension of the challenges facing all those who are concerned with the future of Israel and Jews.

15 slickvguy  Tue, Jun 11, 2002 4:38:44am

Krauthammer was born in New York, but grew up in Montreal (my hometown).

My favorite line:

'America slept, and Israel dreamt.'

Hopefully, we have both emerged from the collective coma. Thanks so much for providing this link.

Meanwhile, today's LA Times (A9) has run a piece of "Israeli;s interference with humanitarian efforts" that completely ignores the repeated use of ambulences to transport weapons by the Paleostinians.

20 Robert Crawford  Tue, Jun 11, 2002 7:12:05am

I'm sure they also ignore something I noticed in the coverage of the bus bombing: ambulances going to/carrying Israelis are subject to the same searches.

21 zulubaby  Wed, Jun 12, 2002 12:26:30am

There is nothing that infuriates me more than the LA Times and the Arab-loving headers they give their stories.

I would post my current letter to the LA Times on this website, but it is very, very long.

I would like to post the (lame) response I received to my previous e-mail to them.

Can you tell me how to do that?
