Because sometimes mockery is as good as outrage.

What? No Bert?

2 J Lichty  Thu, Aug 1, 2002 8:01:49am

I wonder if Earnie was inspired by my post yesterday?

What is it with the palestinians and large picture frames at protests/celebrations?

I have never seen that anywhere outside the Arab world.

Maybe everytime an Arab dies I will start holding up my framed artwork of dogs playing pool and velvet elvis.(emphasis added)

3 Charles  Thu, Aug 1, 2002 8:02:37am

I think he was.

4 J Lichty  Thu, Aug 1, 2002 8:08:39am

Yes the idle mind really is the devil's playground.

Perhaps Earnie could do up one with dogs playing pool too!

5 Robert Crawford  Thu, Aug 1, 2002 8:16:54am

Dammit, I WANT BERT!!!

Looks like I'll have to do it myself, then.

Put a friggin notice on these photos that they are manipulated. Putting it out without any explanation is just plain irresponsible.

Pretty soon we wonder what other LGF photos have undergone this treatment without an explanation.

I'm sure you can say, "just lighten up" but on another website there was a photo-manipulated photo of Jesse Jack*ss with a bomb belt. Just like you shouldn't modify quotes to radically change the meaning, same thing with photos unless they are clearly labeled as such.

Credibility is the only currency on the blogosphere, don't fritter it away.

These picture frame photo ops are truly absurd. They approach the babywipe mystery.. Well, not really. Nothing can approach that.

BTW, OT, but another "earth to FBI", as the man suspected of selling fake IDs to some of the 9/11 hijackers has fled the country to Egypt..

I guess the FBI was busy screwing up their chance to hijack the AlQud web site.

Lichty asks in another post, when does the insanity stop? I ask, when does the hurting stop? When?

DZ, lighten up ;)

The joke of the photo is implicit in Charles' comment beneath it, when he mentions that mockery is as good as outrage.

Why has Israel not initiated a massive operation in Gaza? Hamas struck yesterday AGAIN. HAMAS is in Gaza. Don't you often get the feeling that with every Hamas attack, Gaza is one step away from being firebombed like Dresden? I keep waiting.

I prefer the young Elvis.

11 Jennie Taliaferro  Thu, Aug 1, 2002 8:42:50am

Naw, I like the bloated, aging "Elvis in Hawaii" Elvis!
The KING will never die!
ROFL!!! Thank you, Charles!
(Oh! I spotted the Baby Wipes box on the table at the Jesse Jackson meeting with Arafat!)

As Boo Hewerdine once sang, "You'll never see Graceland."

Sir Lichty writes:

I have never seen that anywhere outside the Arab world.

Actually, in quite a few places where a "strong leader" that "provided order" and "made the trains run on time" has gone away, people tend to protest under the pictures of the man they miss so much. (Ever seen pictures of demonstrations in post-Communist Russia? You can usually find a group of people -- usually older people -- marching under the portrait of Lenin, or even Stalin, pining for the good old days when they actually had pensions that were worth something.)

It's the old standby of bloody dictatorships -- cult of personality.

15 Geoff  Thu, Aug 1, 2002 9:18:01am

I have reason to believe they won't be received in Graceland

16 J Lichty  Thu, Aug 1, 2002 9:34:31am

Thanks E.

It's the old standby of bloody dictatorships -- cult of personality

Cult of Personality was a great song in the 80's.

I have never really caught on to the picture holiding anywhere else, but yeah I can see that in any dictatorship. The pictures are probably government issued.

What if we did that here? Can you imagine anyone but James Carville running around with a framed picture of Clinton.

It would be funny to carry one around after cutting the mouth out and do the Conan O'Brien, Clutch Cargo, Bill Clinton character at a party or rally.

Conan...wooo...hooo...look at me...I'm at a rally...

#13, "Five dolla' "... GREAT! The only thing missing is to show that Muslime bomber-to-be with a blast-belt around his gut.
As for Sharon and colleagues: "Gaza is just west and a bit south of Yerushalayim; visit it soon with a lunch pail (oops, LAUNCH pail). "
Am Israel needs a BIG dose of tshuva, starting at the Knesset; evacuating the Arab Moselms(!!) from the national government; spanking Shimmy Peres and telling him to sit down and be quiet; offering the anti-Torah (= G-d-hating) Israeli Jews one-way tix to Chutz L'Aretz. (Yes, we here in USA are coming on aliyah; savlanut.)
And to think the carnage this time was in the "Frank Sinatra" student center. What a role model HE was for the Torah world, eh!?

i HAE BEEN LOOKING ON THE WEB and it has been hard to find any pictures of the clebrations of the Hebrew U attack. I guess the reuter's and AP's photographers were too busy participating in the celebrations to photograph them.

22 Michael Lonie  Thu, Aug 1, 2002 2:31:00pm

Coke ZB,
That is a very good point. I have read that much of the majormedia's coverage of the Palestinian Arab-Israel war is shaped by Arab stringers and cameramen. The western journalists go where the locals tell them to go and interview people the locals find, relying on the locals' translations. Western journalists who don't toe the line may be threatened.
