-RetweetWhat’s on Arafat’s Desk?

Thu, Oct 3, 2002 at 3:31:51 pm PDT

Reverend Andrew White, the archbishop of Canterbury’s special representative to the Middle East, invades Yasser Arafat’s personal space. Baby wipes, front and center. Stack of paperwork, unchanged. Arafat’s clothing, unchanged for a very long time. But what’s that odd pentagonal box next to the water bottle?

Mini-gas stove, like for camping?

2 ploome  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 1:52:01pm

looks like the archbishop is giving old arafat a pep talk...fist in the air...

anyway...if you notice...there are some red colored papers a little way down the 'work' pile...

it was there on the last picture Charles posted..

we should use that red paper as a 'control'.see how much work he is doing...LOL

3 ploome  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 1:58:39pm

here is the previous picture...note the red pages near the top of the pile..

5 Fay Greenwood  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:08:35pm

From the link that ploome posted to the previous picture, that octagonal box thing can be seen in front of the BW's. It looks like it is the same shape as those collection boxes the sally ann shake. Maybe it's a BW collection box and all visting dignitaries, clergymen and UN reps drop their spare change into before leaving.

6 Rodger Dodger  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:10:32pm

The odd bottle, I think, is a shake up model of the Dome of the Rock--you know, the kind of thing that usually has Santa or the Eifel Tower inside.

7 Dave  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:13:44pm

"By God, if you don't tell me what the hell that box is, I'm gonna wipe the floor with you, you freaky old man-baby!"

8 mommydoc  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:21:03pm

I thought it was a photo cube kinda thing, but it seems to be reflective. It also seems to be sitting atop a babyfood jar. Baby wipe, baby food--is Yasir the bi a daddy again?

And is that Dannon water in the water bottle? Who's sneaking that in to him?

Must say, old Andy's looking pretty natty with that pocket square.

9 J Lichty  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:29:12pm

Notice the "Tapper" sitting next to the stapler.(battery operated light as seen on TV)

Perhaps he was filming a new promo for the Tapper.

"Siege on . . . siege off . . . the Tapper."

10 J Lichty  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:30:50pm

I also like the medal on Arafat's left breast pocket. It looks similar to a gold circle condom wrapper.

I think the water is Dannon (isn't that a French company?)

11 MarkD  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:34:41pm

Maybe the box is the missing jewelry box from the Chandra Levy - Gary Condit debacle.

12 Just John  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:36:38pm

It's the new fragrance for failed suicide bombers...

Oh, wait, sorry, that should read "It's the new fragrance made from failed suicide bombers."

It's called "Allahu Akbar Oops! for Men".

When did Fozzy Bear start wearing a head scarf? Wakka wakka wakka.

14 Jonathan  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:39:13pm

Kudos to Ploome. We can now document the pile staying exactly the same for the next 3 months.

15 adam  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:45:24pm

The red pages are in EVERY photo over the past couple weeks, unchanged. I remember seeing them for longer, but Yahoos archive doesn't go back any farther ;)

The odd octagonal box has also made other appearances.

It looks like it may be some of that Mexican hot chocolate that is reallly good. You know, the kind with the cinnamon mixed in.

17 Westoner  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:49:28pm

Is the Rev. giving our Yasser a personal message from Sharon by any chance?

18 Elizabeth  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:56:24pm

I think I remember seeing this "box" before--its a model of the "Dome of the Rock", pictures of which Palestinians have everywhere, as you know.

19 Eric  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 2:56:51pm

It's a Fourth of July firework, the kind you buy at those roadside stands. They got the wick on the top and when it goes off there's six multi colored balls that shoot out and explode.

I'm thinking Yessir He'sarat is saving it for his last stand.

this is a joke article, but the photo is real.

Nice socks, Yasser!!

21 Donna V.  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 3:10:37pm

The little things in the box are obviously suppositories. Arafat graciously offers all of his visitors a suppository and a baby-wipe.

Either that it's a candy dish filled with yummy rabbit pellets.

22 Fay Greenwood  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 3:12:11pm

eeewww Adam, what is that on his feet? And, if there is an uglier person (from head to toe) in the entire fucking universe I'd like to see a picture of him/her. He's wearing the condom medal thingy as well. No wonder the Mrs. lives in Paris. eeewww!!!

23 Fay Greenwood  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 3:17:13pm

Oh and PS to Charles, thanks for this post. I think this is one of the funniest LGF threads ever. Keep it up LGF'ers.

Maybe we could have a "Name that Arafat Accessory" competion. First prize: A years' supply of ba... (on second thoughts maybe not).

24 Richard Heddleson  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 3:26:22pm

The oddly shaped box is a GPS jamming device. They are available from Russian Black Market sources for $39.95. The baby wipes are necessary to clean the jammer transmission antennae daily.

25 Dar ul Harbarian  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 3:31:00pm

NASTY!!!
I've seen nicer socks on homeless people.
That is why the Isrealis keep tearing down his compound. They are desperatly trying to figure out "What's that smell ?!?!?"

I thought the Muslims had a thing about washing their feet several times a day. Apparently, it's O.K. to wash them and put on filthy, stinky socks. (My momma never whupped me, but she would have if she had caught me walking around in socks like that.)

BTW,one day a few years ago, I walked into the bathroom in the Physician's Lounge right outside my office and found 3 Muslim women, all veiled, standing there and one of them was washing her foot in the sink. (They weren't physicians, probably just visitors to the hospital looking for an out-of-the-way spot to "perform abulations".) They gave me "Get lost, infidel" looks and I was so startled that I said "Uh, excuse me" and backed away. A doctor I know well came in and headed for the bathroom and I said "Tom, don't go in there, Muslim ladies are washing their feet in the sink." He's had his leg pulled by me before and so he said, "Yeah, right, Donna" and headed in. He came out a second later and said to me "What the HELL,...," (Things like this never happened when I worked in law firms.)

P.S. mommydoc, I'll never look at a bottle of pump-spray Aqua Net in quite the same way ever again:-)

34 mommydoc  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 4:18:22pm

Adam--great links, except now I have a head cold and extreme nausea. You really ought to post some warnings!

But I think I know what that smell in NJ might be. When was the last time Arafat was there? How many of his emulators live in that area? Hmmm.

The vaseline conjures up all kinds of nasty thoughts. But it certainly does explain the baby wipes--and his eternally greasy look.

Fay--if there is anyone uglier I certainly don't want to see him or her. I might never recover from the trauma. Although it does suggest an interesting LGF contest...Burn victims, the accidentally disfigured and diagnosed birth defects don't count, though.

35 priestwatcher  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 4:23:30pm

that peach colored handkerchief is very dashing.
Sort of adds a little pizazz to that white collar - black shirt look.
what's up with the stand to prop up the book. it looks like it belongs on the beemah for the chazzan.

36 getbuggered  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 4:25:52pm

Donna--great story! I always said I went into medicine for the human drama and I've never had a disappointing day. Ever.

38 Donna V.  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 4:27:19pm

I was right: they are suppositories! Little Tan Suppositories (great name for a blog), vaseline, baby wipes, condom thingy - it's all coming together in a most unsavory way. I don't even want to think about where the dirty socks fit into all this,...,

I'm afraid it is, Adam. I'm afraid it is.

Yeah. He's saving it for Adam Shapiro's next visit.

By the way, the pentagonal thing is a nuclear winter snow globe.

41 LuminaT  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 4:48:32pm
its a tzeddaka box
Tzedakah boxes are a Jewish tradition. Why would he have a Tzedakah box on his desk when he subscribes to zakat?

42 LibraryGryffon  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 4:48:42pm

That little pentagonal thingy looks like it probably is a dome of the rock paperweight, but it could also be one of those little goldfish/beta bowls you buy for five bucks or less at the pet store. The gold thing in the center could just be a rather moribund fish sitting on the brown gravel at the bottom.

43 LuminaT  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 4:49:19pm

For those who are wondering, a "tzeddaka box" (#32, #41) is a charity-collection box. Stick change into it, hand it over to a charitable organization when it's full.

48 Jeff S.  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 5:55:13pm

I realize this is off-topic, but unless I didn't catch it, how in the world did LGF miss this quintessential NY Post tale of Marin County's most famous Moslem? It turns out that lil Johnny Lindh was doing some serious Tali-whacking with his newfound brethren, in between the guerilla training and the Koran memorization. Good thing for J.W. that he had friends in high places, or he might have found his traitorous (and apparently fine) ass on the wrong side of a collapsed wall.

52 mommydoc  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 8:01:18pm

Jeff S.-It has to be a hoax. No practicing Muslim would publicly admit to a homosexual affair--not exactly halal, y'know?

53 mojo  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 8:43:45pm

"C'mon, let's see those hands, Yasser! Are they as hairy as the rest of you? Mmm-hmmm...And why does it always smell like vaseline in here, as if I didn't know..."

54 Robin Goodfellow  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 9:47:46pm

Using various items on the desk for reference (the width of the papers, the size of the babywipes box, the size of the octagonal thing, the size of Arafat's head, etc.) I have determined that the red papers have not changed height on his desk. Which makes you wonder, if he's not working on his work pile, why's it there?

55 Claudia  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 9:48:34pm

After giggling while reading all of your comments, I had to take another look at the picture. Now I'm wondering what the good reverend is trying to saying with his arm gesture...

56 Ratz  Thu, Oct 3, 2002 11:00:36pm

Looking at the photo that started this thread (thanks to adam for all the comparisons), I think that the pile might actually be growing there's at least an additional inch from the prev. pic...

The same materials, the same positions...I'd say that the pile isn't exactly a 'transient part' of the office...we already know that many, if not most, of the photos issued by the PA are staged/manipulated/falsified/mis-presented...so would anyone be surprised to learn that these photos are all staged? After all, what leader has blank walls in his office? Not even Al-Qaida was silly enough for that...they at least had caves. The whole office is too perfect for actual use or habitation. The camera images are ALWAYS from the same side, and are from the same angle (within an approx 90° range of motion).

DIAGNOSIS: Staged
STRATEGY: Hope world catches on
IMMEDIATE PLAN: GET SOME SLEEP!

g'night

After all the jokes, there is a serious question to ask:

Why does the Archbishop of Canterbury send an emissary to a mass murderer terrorist?

61 Riverman  Fri, Oct 4, 2002 3:55:28am

Dorothy, I really, really wish I knew why. There are a thousand reasons and there is no reason. Churchmen can and should do things that make the rest of us sick, but this is just not one of them, whatever justification they might come up with.

All I can say, as an Anglican, is "Not in my name!"

Why does the Archbishop of Canterbury send an emissary to a mass murderer terrorist?

The new archbishop of Canterbury is on record as supporting the Palestinians. He was said some other rather wacky and anti-western things as well.

I remember a small controversy when he was appointed. Perhaps some of our royal subject readers are more familiar with his record.

If I am not mistaken the Pope of Rome has also been very outspoken in support of the baby-wipe billionaire.

The pentagonal thing is a dildo illustrated with scenes from the life of the prophet. The penatagonal shape is meant to cause excess pain, and its to be used during the self-flagellation rites.
