Looks like Uncle Sugar may be set to punish the Germany economy a little by pulling some troops. Or maybe they are slowly throwing us out like the French did.

i saw this sign at a peace demonstration:
War Against War!
morons!
also:
Sheryl Crow had supported Clinton and the war in Bosnia. She even entertained the troops over there. But she's against the war in Iraq. Why? Because George Bush is president. Today's peace movement is a leftist political organization that has no more moral integrity than a colony of herpes virus floating in Larry Flynt's hot tub.

T. Jefferson Thu, Feb 27, 2003 3:15:21pm |
Upon this a question arises: whether it be better to be loved than feared or feared than loved? It may be answered that one should wish to be both, but, because it is difficult to unite them in one person, is much safer to be feared than loved, when, of the two, either must be dispensed with. Because this is to be asserted in general of men, that they are ungrateful, fickle, false, cowardly, covetous, and as long as you succeed they are yours entirely; they will offer you their blood, property, life and children, as is said above, when the need is far distant; but when it approaches they turn against you. And that prince who, relying entirely on their promises, has neglected other precautions, is ruined; because friendships that are obtained by payments, and not by greatness or nobility of mind, may indeed be earned, but they are not secured, and in time of need cannot be relied upon; and men have less scruple in offending one who is beloved than one who is feared, for love is preserved by the link of obligation which, owing to the baseness of men, is broken at every opportunity for their advantage; but fear preserves you by a dread of punishment which never fails.
...
Returning to the question of being feared or loved, I come to the conclusion that, men loving according to their own will and fearing according to that of the prince, a wise prince should establish himself on that which is in his own control and not in that of others; he must endeavour only to avoid hatred, as is noted.

Want to have some real fun at this rally, or one like it in the Mid-East?
1)Slip on the flowing robes and paste on a scraggly beard if need be to fit in.
2)Work your way through the throng until you can get to the microphone.
3) Hold aloft and announce you have 5 green-cards and plane tickets to the USA for the five men who praise America the loudest.
4) Run, but watch over your shoulder as they tear themselves to pieces while screaming the lyrics to "Yankee Doodle Dandy" at the top of their lungs.

So did they just gather into a stadium and wave their signs at each other? They could have at least marched at the US embassy..
also, keep in mind that this demonstration was organized by Mubarak. Although it's probably just a way to let off steam. Notice the conspicuous abscence of Palestinian flags. I could see more Pali flags walking down Telegraph Ave. here in Berkeley.

I have to say this is the best effigy I have seen in a long time. The mask and hat - nice touch. I have made a study of these things since the Iranian hostage crisis. Here are some of my thoughts:
1. The Palestinians are really bad at effigees. Please see [Link: www.time.com...] See what I mean? No style.
2. A proper effigy must have actual clothes on a dummy. I notice that places where western dress is unpopular (i.e. Pakistan) have trouble getting the suit jacket, shirt and tie combo so important for the good effigy. The Egyptians use the suit and time well.
3. There is a need for some sort of internal rigid support to keep the effigy's head up when it is being burned. Just having the head nod down looks bad.
4. Finally, just throwing the thing on the street once it is on fire just does not look as good as hanging it by a noose from a lightpole.
Now, don't get me wrong - the ideas expressed by the effigy are utterly repugnant. But, if one is to do something, it may as well be done well.

Right Brain Thu, Feb 27, 2003 6:21:54pm |
According to the CIA Factbook the present population of Egypt is 73 million, that divided into 2 Billion dollars means $28. for every Egyptian, to put this in perspective the budget for the US National Endowment for the Art is $108M or 37 cents for each American. With a $3700 average per capita income in Egypt that $28. is a substantial amount of money, someone tell me why we are giving this sum again?
#16 According to Thomas Friedman 61% of Egyptians believe that 9/11 was a Jew/ CIA plot to discredit Muslims, so don't bother with your "silent majority" or "fraction of a percent" theory, they generally hate and mistrust us.

#33, 34: Actually, I seem to remember a Star Trek episode involving a beautiful Arab-like princess from a despotic planet who falls in love with Kirk after he slaps her (or is it that he saved her life?). I think Kirk at one point even tries to explain to her the virtues of democracy over despotism. Does anyone know the episode I'm referring to?

Money can't buy you love.
Perhaps Lesson #1 of the overseas Jewish communities, something the US should realize by now as well.
Right, #2 Ariel, #13 James (faction, not cabal)?
Why should it be any different when the US hands out welfare checks?
IMO, 25 years of multi-billion dollar annual welfare check entitlements to 2 ME countries, comprising over half of total American foreign aid, is long past due for a major policy revision as money down two ungrateful ratholes. The money should cease and be diverted to more needy countries in Asia, Latin America, and subsaharan Africa. 5 billion can do great good rather than just perpetuate the ME status quo for our two parasitic "friends".
Egypt has strategic value as one of the two centers of Islamic life, and for the Suez Canal. But we pay every dollar they are due for the Suez on top of their aid package.
Israel has little strategic value post Cold War. It is a diplomatic, economic, and military ball and chain on the US's leg. It has moral value for many Americans...but has lost much of it's moral weight abroad and increasingly in the US for it's oppressive actions in occupied territories.
Time to move on. 1978 Camp David had payments that were not meant to be eternal welfare guarantees but to adjust for losses with the peace and bribes to get Egypt and Israel to agree to peace. Special interest lobbies in the USA greased the right palms in Congress to make the billions given to the 2 ME Welfare Queens an
annual US taxpayer obligation.
In the US domestic welfare queens screamed that ended their lifetime dole would lead to ruin and perdition. It didn't. Same with Israel & Egypt...cutting off their wheelbarrow loads of US taxpayer money would cause a major hissy fit, but it would also jar them - get the two countries off their asses and to get them serious about fixing deep socialistic flaws in their economies. And yes, both countries have enough F-16s to get them happy as is.
| 52 | Lyn Thomas Fri, Feb 28, 2003 6:57:58am |
I'm probably way off-base here, but I prefer that the US be seen as in inhuman monster. If the only other choices are naive fools, useful idiots, or soft-minded liberals, I'll take the monster.
OT: A co-worker was telling me that his young daughter's favorite cartoon movie was An American Tail. I paused to think and asked, "That's the one where about Jewish immigrants to New York, except the Jews are mice?" Yes, he replied. Visions of Maus ran through my head as I said, I'm sick of being portrayed as a mouse. I wanna be portrayed as Godzilla.
