Corruption at CNN

Tue, Apr 15, 2003 at 12:32:17 pm PDT

Revelations about CNN’s deliberate obfuscation of the truth in Iraq are pouring out; here’s the latest, from Peter Collins who was in Baghdad with CNN in 1993 and witnessed their complicity in Iraqi propaganda at first hand: Corruption at CNN.

I was on the roof of the Ministry of Information, preparing for my first "live shot" on CNN. A producer came up and handed me a sheet of paper with handwritten notes. "Tom Johnson wants you to read this on camera," he said. I glanced at the paper. It was an item-by-item summary of points made by Information Minister Latif Jassim in an interview that morning with Mr. Johnson and Mr. Jordan.

The list was so long that there was no time during the live shot to provide context. I read the information minister's points verbatim. Moments later, I was downstairs in the newsroom on the first floor of the Information Ministry. Mr. Johnson approached, having seen my performance on a TV monitor. "You were a bit flat there, Peter," he said. Again, I was astonished. The president of CNN was telling me I seemed less-than-enthusiastic reading Saddam Hussein's propaganda.

The next day, I was CNN's reporter on a trip organized by the Ministry of Information to the northern city of Mosul. "Minders" from the ministry accompanied two busloads of news people to an open, plowed field outside Mosul. The purpose was to show us that American warplanes were bombing "innocent Iraqi farmers." Bits of American ordinance were scattered on the field. One large piece was marked "CBU." I recognized it as the canister for a Cluster Bomb Unit, a weapon effective against troops in the open, or against "thin-skinned" armor. I was puzzled. Why would U.S. aircraft launch CBUs against what appeared to be an open field? Was it really to kill "innocent Iraqi farmers?" The minders showed us no victims, no witnesses. I looked around. About 2000 yards distant on a ridgeline, two radar dishes were just visible against the sky. The ground was freshly plowed. Now, I understood. The radars were probably linked to Soviet-made SA-6 surface-to-air missiles mounted on tracks, armored vehicles, parked in the field at some distance from the dishes to keep them safe. After the bombing, the Iraqis had removed the missile launchers and had plowed the field to cover the tracks.

On the way back to Baghdad, I explained to other reporters what I thought had happened, and wrote a report that was broadcast on CNN that night.

The next day, Brent Sadler, CNN's chief reporter at the time in Baghdad (he is now in northern Iraq), came up to me in a hallway of the al Rasheed Hotel. He had been pushing for the interview with Saddam and had urged Mr. Johnson and Mr. Jordan to come to Baghdad to help seal the deal. "Petah," he said to me in his English accent, "you know we're trying to get an interview with Saddam. That piece last night was not helpful."

So, we were supposed to shade the news to get an interview with Saddam?

(Several people emailed this one; thanks.)

If this keeps up CNN will follow rapidly on the footsteps of ABC. Good. This war is weeding out a heck of a lot more than just anti-Americans and countries like France who backstab but claim to be allies. Keep boiling the water and all the yucky stuff will come to the surface.

I thought Eason Jordan's explanation yesterday was pretty lame (about their complicity in this mess in order to save members of their Iraqi camera crew and their families) - this pretty much seals them up as the BS artiste's they are.

Oh, and I doubt any heads will roll as a result of all this.

And CNN's Brent Sadlers's escapade last Saturday night wandering around Tikrit ahead of the coalition forces has a elicited a strange spin for some readers:

CNN – news channel or a US militia?

(Dont ask why I am reading the Balochistan Post - I found weird story there once, so I check it out now and then)

The last paragraph of the story is wrong, I watched the whole 2 hours of live broadcast and there was no film of the CNN security guard firing at the "hostiles". They were firing back, and admitted as much on the live broadcast, but neither the car chasing them was shown nor was their security guard shown returning fire.

10 Ben Noah  Tue, Apr 15, 2003 10:49:44am

WOW.. Brent Sadler has been all over the TV during this war. I wonder what his response will be to this.

Amazing, but why am I not surprised?

I wonder when CNN's going to put Petah Arnett back on the payroll, perhaps in charge of ethics for the News Division of Time-Warner, provided that Elmer Fudd and the rest of the Cartoon division can't find a strong challenger.

I was flabbergasted when I read this story earlier today, and wonder what kind of person(s) would squelch any semblence of their conscience in order to secure an interview with people who are, quite frankly, manifestations of evil. CNN internation news honcho Johnson allowed his network to be used as a conduit for the lies of a truly despotic madman, and the only thing that bothered him about the deal was that Peter "...was a bit flat there".

It's all theatre to these bastards, isn't it? Have the Leftists become so embrioled in dogma and theory that they are incapable of evil, not to mention recognizing their own complicity in helping it to thrive?

As to Eason Jordan, I'll give him minimum credit for owning up to his part in what so many news organizations see as "The Game". But that is all I will give him. He may have saved his interpreters' skins by keeping quiet, but he allowed countless others to be sacrificed so that he and the others at the helm of CNN could be seen as "Big Swinging Dicks". What a pr!*k!

Too bad we don't have some sort of jounalism standards and practices office when CNN could be fined, or lose certain credentials for participating in such a campaign of disinformation. Perhaps the White House could pull their White House Press Corps creds?

Infidel:

I've often heard CNN described as the "Clinton News Network" as they could "see no evil, hear no evil ..." when it came to 'he who would not inhale".

Gustavia,
Good for you for reading the Balochistan Post (I can only quote the movie Stripes right here, though with a "There was one?")
I digress, but thank you for posting it. I watched Sadler's videophone feed live as well, and the subsequent hi-res sat feeds, and to take this a step further than the baluchistanis...there was no shot of anyone firing on them either...hmmm...as soon as they passed back thru the checkpoint on their way out of dodge the camera tilted down to the dashboard and then automatic weapons were heard...none really distinguishable as incoming or outgoing, same volume really...but thats not the half of it...later on down the road like a minute later during the live videophone sadler claimed that men with pistols in a van that pulled up alongside them were firing as well (no shot of ANY van whatsoever...) Me and my g/f were sitting there gripping and first stating how stupid the reporters were for rolling in there in the first place...
Anyway, one has to wonder:
a) who fired first?...think about it...they were not stopping at a checkpoint, speeding right through it...before the camera panned away you can see a uniformed iraqi making his way back towards the median in their general direction, but it was a CHECKPOINT...our boys whacked plenty of civvies when they didn't/don't stop at our checkpoints, ya know?
b) when pressed repeatedly by anchor anderson about the men with pistols in the van, sadler dodged it and after the sat feeds came thru there isn't any mention of these pistol wielding assasins...
It's funny, the Arabic slant of CNN is that they are working for the US military, and we have the exact opposite view...shows how far apart the sides really are...

p.s maui girl: I was in maui for most of the war...wish I never had to leave :-)

CNN's irresponsible and inflammatory coverage of the Rodney King case provoked the LA Riots of 4/29/92 more than anything. I hold them liable for the 50+ deaths that resulted, and the millions if not billions in property damage.

You know, I have to say that I much prefer Baghdad Bob to CNN. Baghdad Bob, aka the Iraqi Information Minister (canonized at [Link: www.welovetheiraqiinformationminister.com),...] is consistent, is known to lie, and is quite flagrant about it. CNN mixes in some truth with their lies, damn lies, and propaganda, so it's not always clear what's what. I wish CNN would just hire Baghdad Bob to do their newscasts all the time - I would have a better understanding of the truth with him there. Alternatively, Baghdad Bob would make a great SNL Weekend Update newscaster (hat tip for that thought to the Command Post).

28 Inspector Callahan  Tue, Apr 15, 2003 11:31:00am

I wonder where Big Al is? He complained on a prior thread that all news orgs do this, and if Fox made a big deal out of CNN doing this, then CNN was going to investigate FOX supposedly doing the same thing.

FOX made a big deal of this on their Sunday morning news show. Even the resident libs (Juan and Mara) were shocked (or so they said).

CNN hasn't made the statement that all news orgs do this, nor have they blamed FOX for doing the same. So Big Al's statements were wrong. And he's in the news biz.

I believe that most Big Media types are so cynical and jaded that they really believe that all news orgs get away with this all of the time. However, if so, CNN wouldn't be the only org "outed" for this outrageous behavior.

My favorite quote: after citing one scare-quoted sneering reference in the Observer to the "rescue" [sic] of Private Lynch, the author asks:

Eason Jordan is a craven liar. His explanation that the translator would be killed is the most preposterous story I have heard in a long time. If Mr. Uday were going to kill anyone, I would think that it would be Eason Jordan and not the translator. Or does Eason Jordan think that we should believe that he is more important than the King of Jordan and therefore would somehow be protected from Uday's vengeance?

The most telling point of this whole sordid story is the fact that Uday felt he could confide in Mr. Jordan without fear of being exposed. That alone says more about the type of person that Eason Jordan is than anything else.

For those not in the know: the elderly man was Leon Klinghoffer, a disabled American Jew who was pushed overboard by the barbarians because he was Jewish and helpless.

Then Syria was accused of sending, or allowing, Arab "volunteers" to cross into Iraq to fight the Americans. This is much harder for the Syrians to deny. I've met a few of them here in Baghdad, most anxious to return to their homes in Homs and Damascus, others – from Algeria and Morocco – telling me that they will be safe if they can reach the Syrian border because "there will be no trouble from there". But here, too, there's a whiff of hypocrisy.
Whenever Israel goes to war, there are hundreds of "volunteers" from the United States rushing to Tel Aviv to join the Israel Defence Force, and America never complains.

I saw a new conference last week where the reporter actually asked a question about how the Special Forces team "captured back" Private Lynch.

Captured back?!! It's like she couldn't conceive of our brave soldiers doing something good like "rescuing." No, they "capture" even it doesn't make sense.
