Israel Celebration

Here’s a very interesting site that highlights the many achievements made by Israelis and Israeli society: Israel Celebration. (Hat tip: Kelly.)

Wow! That was a great place to visit. Wish I could visit the real thing.

I didn't know most of the stuff I saw on the site, but I do know that the People of Israel - despite the hardships face over the years (and centuries) are amazing people. Those who have made Aliyah to such a troubled land are to be commended!

An excellent resource! I bookmarked it.

*Sigh* "He who mustn't be named" will be here soon, I fear.

I had no idea that most of NT was developed at Microsoft's facility there (now we know who to blame when it misbehaves (grin)).

The math co-processor and MMX technology were both invented there by a scientist at Intel's research facility, so they're keeping up the good work with the Centrino.

Does anyone know what percentage of Israel's population is black?

Thank you Charles, for this bookmark. It helps put things in perspective. Occasionally I read some media story about the poor Palestinians, and I forget the bigger picture; that Israel is the only light shining in the Middle East - and it is a mighty strong light. The most ironic thing is that the Arabs of the Middle East who have the most to be thankful are - the ones living in Israel!

Great website!

Interesting question. Looking at CIA fact book they have an entry in the demographic section showing there are 14.6% that are African born.

[Link: www.cia.gov...]

I tried doing a search at the below url but could not find demographic information comprable to what the US has.

In a list of stunning achievements, for some reason this one touches me deeply:

Israel is the only country in the world that entered the 21st century with a net gain in its number of trees.

I cried on the tarmac the day I left Israel. There are no words to describe the depth of the love many of us have for that/our land.

I found a website that talks about the Black population of Israel in all its flavors (Nubian, Yemenite, Ethiopian, etc.), but doesn't give current numbers. Another site mentions that nearly 42,000 Ethiopian Jews were brought into the country, so...

12 freedomsound  Thu, May 8, 2003 6:57:24am

Great site, except for the MLK quote which is apparently a hoax. I emailed them the information, so hopefully they will change that one part to something more accurate.

13 BC  Thu, May 8, 2003 7:00:17am

Great site! Two awesome babes on the home page (no, I'm not counting Golda Meir).

Maybe Israel is finally trying to do a tiny, tiny bit to improve its PR?

14 Kelly  Thu, May 8, 2003 7:02:55am

Dirk,

while search to find a good answer for you I found a site called:

The Jewish MultiCultural Project

Wow, I didn't know that was a hoax. Thanks for bringing that up. (For anyone interested, see more on the topic here.)

Sean:

*Sigh* "He who mustn't be named" will be here soon, I fear.

Like clockwork, with yet another long-winded cant.

My advice to all ye: "Scroll past, young man."

(Apologies to Horace Greeley)

Then there are the lesser imps:
From the Blinded by Bush-Hatred Thread

19 israeliguy  Thu, May 8, 2003 7:20:17am

WOW... that's a GREAT page. I would have some editions to make (mostly in the military area) like uzis, the arrow 2 missle, as well as a few medical developments. Like developing the first beating heart cells from stem cells, and developing a cure to parkinson (the latest is a news story).

20 Wild Justice  Thu, May 8, 2003 7:20:20am

OT,

Does anyone know of a good intermediate/advanced Hebrew-language course on compact disc? (Cassettes are so damn unwieldy.)

21 Geepers  Thu, May 8, 2003 7:25:07am

Sean (#17),

Yes, that's a start. Plus probably; wolfs-bane, cloves of garlic, antibiotics, a tin foil hat, a couple of Mia-Tia's, MOPP suits and a healthy supply of Listerine.

22 Glen Wishard  Thu, May 8, 2003 7:42:12am

Alas, Israel's enemies don't give a damn about Israel's accomplishments. Just like they don't care whether Labor or Likud rules, or whether there are settlements or no settlements.

You look at Israel and see breakthrough medical research, they look at it and see their imaginary "ethno-bomb".

23 freedomsound  Thu, May 8, 2003 7:53:41am

#15 HalfLife

Yeah, I actually found out about that from one of the posters here on LGF a while back. But it is nice to know that there are still other pro-Israel MLK quotes that are genuine.

24 Geepers  Thu, May 8, 2003 7:59:53am

Glen Wishard (#22)

The way I see it the “ethno-bomb” is self imposed and working very well, albeit slowly. Arab governments enjoy ruling over inbred unemployed backward-thinking islamo-bots who are required to be pathetic losers such that the only canard that works for them: “Pity us see what poor pathetic losers we are” can continue to work.

25 Dirk Diggler  Thu, May 8, 2003 8:10:36am
Alas, Israel's enemies don't give a damn about Israel's accomplishments.

I think it would be interesting (and probably worth a laugh too) to compare and contrast Israel's numerous political, scientific, and cultural achievements with those of the "Palestinians".

26 Kelly  Thu, May 8, 2003 8:40:35am

25 Dirk Diggler

You can't laugh at what does not exist. It is sad that the Palestinians and the larger Arab population does not appear to have any similar accomplishments to their credit in the past couple hundred years.

However, the Arabs are credited with making many advances in Medicine and mathematics in the distant past. Their forefathers also deserve credit for storing many important academic treasures that the Catholic church attempted to destroy during the "dark ages".

27 fred  Thu, May 8, 2003 9:33:10am

#26, re: past muslim accomplishments.

Most of the past accomplishments of Islam are connected to the Persian or Greek civilizations and to a school of thought called the Mutazilites who held that calling the Koran perfect was a form of idolatry.

The Mutazilites and the Golden Age of Islam were drowned by the Ottomans who backed a more rigid form of Islam more like today's fundamentalists.

Of course, I should not have left out the Jews.

#28:

Dont forget the Sassanians, Nabateans, Transoxanians, Syriacs, Turcomans, and Berbers!

Also, people tend to neglect Byzantium.

30 Jonathan Edelstein  Thu, May 8, 2003 1:11:07pm

There are also some good stories about Israeli achievements at Israel21c and Good News from Israel.

31 Joel  Fri, May 9, 2003 10:22:52am

Of course what has the Arab / Islamic World achieved in teh past century?
