Palestinian Arms Smuggling?

Wed, May 21, 2003 at 12:07:31 pm PDT

Guysen Israel News has a breaking story that a very large shipment of contraband weapons, of similar magnitude to the infamous Karine-A incident, has been intercepted on its way to the Palestinian Authority. Guysen is a French Jewish news outlet; LGF reader Caton supplies the following translation:

The IDF confiscated tonight a large arrival of contrabanda weapons for the Palis. First news at 17.41, details not released for publication.

Take it with a grain of salt, because nothing has appeared yet on other Israeli news sites; but if true, this could be the final pothole on the “roadmap to peace.”

Hey, that reminds me - when did the final report of the "full investigation" into Karine A that Arafat promised come out? Anyone have a copy?

2 LAR  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:13:46am

What would they need arms for? I suspect that poor Arafish will be shocked to find out that arms were on the way...

3 leggy mountbatten  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:14:42am

no, no - see, they need those weapons to fight the terrorists and implement the roadmap...

4 Lucile  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:14:44am

Well, I think Israel should use this opportunity to take the moral high ground and give those nice Palis their toys back. (snicker)

5 Q  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:16:09am
but if true, this could be the final pothole on the “roadmap to peace.”

Or Bush, in his usual eloquent way, will call it "just another bump on the road" or some other horseshit along those lines.

this could be the final pothole on the “roadmap to peace.”

Let's hope. It was the Karine-A incident that inspired the President's June 2002 speech that marked a sea-change in our government's dealings with the Paleos. If this is true, it's time for us to step aside and let the Israelis do whatever they need to do to secure Judea and Samaria--and peace--for themselves.

7 Colt  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:20:49am

Boy I can't wait to see the pro-Pals back away from their support after this revelation, just like they did after the Karine-A...

8 Robo11  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:21:26am

Question: If the U.S. was the victim of constant suicide bombings in our malls and city buses, and we new that Arafat was the leader behind those executing the bombings, what do you think Bush would do?

9 Lively  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:25:59am

Three cheers for the IDF.

10 Caton  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:26:15am

OT: What's that? Patriot II batteries deployed around Washington, DC?

Anybody can confirm?

11 Kelly  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:28:29am

The Arab terrorists and leadership do some rather stupid things.

I find it hard to believe that they are so stupid to do this again knowing what the reprecusions are likely to be when caught.

I'll bet even money that at least a few Palestinian and sympathetic agencies and news sources will claim just that.

13 McMonkey & McPig  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:29:42am

I think the more important news from this site is this:

20:50  Deux joueurs de ping-pong arabes ont refusé d'affronter un adversaire israélien lors des championnats du monde qui se déroulent actuellement à Paris. Il s'agit d'un Saoudien et d'un Yéménite.

"20:50 Two Arab ping-pong players refused to play an Israeli opponent during the World Championship, taking place now in Paris. They were a Saudi and a Yemenite."

Those damn Jewish ping-pong players! Always causing problems.

#13 McMonkey & McPig

Heh. It is important. The Saudi and Yemen table tennis federations will not be invited to any international event for a while because of that. This includes the Olympic games. Less Arabs in Greece in 2004.

15 someguy  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:34:21am

Caton(#10):

What's that? Patriot II batteries deployed around Washington, DC?

Still looking. But FOXNews had this tidbit in
one of their articles

At least one Web site urged Muslims "to get out of New York, D.C. and Boston" by Wednesday for what is believed to be a large act of terrorism, officials said.

It's nightime here. I hope I wake up tomorrow hearing that my country is safe and sound.

16 BC  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:39:34am

OT: While looking for something about the shipment in the Haaretz news flashes (it isn't there yet), I came across this item:

21:15 Arab MK Barakeh slams Minister Gideon Ezra`s call for Arabs to become security guards as Nazi-type idea

Just going from this, it sounds like Barakeh's comparing Arabs working as security guards at malls etc (ie working to prevent murders of Arabs as well as Jews) to the Nazis' use of locals (including Jews) as police to do their evil work.

So his analogy, besides being (like all Nazi-Israel analogies) deeply offensive, is also morally outrageous: he's suggesting that it's somehow oppressive, and analogous to forced complicity to murder, to stop Arabs from murdering people.

17 zulubaby  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:41:08am

Two bombs discovered (and thank G-d, safely defused) and one "peace activist" being booted (Terrific!)

So far, it's all good news.

18 view from Ireland  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:41:18am

Is it the same story?

I think the US would find arafat a nice little apartment somewhere. And ask him if he'd like some fries with his human sacrifice.

From Israel Insider:

Explosives lab uncovered in Nablus
IDF soldiers destroyed a workshop found linked to a house in the Casbah in Nablus, which was used to prepare explosive devices and weapons. Six explosive belts were discovered, three of them ready to be detonated.
23 Dr. Jal Hampson  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:49:56am

If it is true, I wonder how long ago terrorfat ordered this shipment?

24 JH  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:50:09am

One thing we should know by now is that as far as the "peace process" is concerned, the world will never say 'never again'.To the liberal mind and apparently the Bush administration as well, what has gone before is a matter of no concern. What really, really matters is sincerity of belief:if you believe strongly enough, everything is possible.Even peace in the Middle East.

25 zulubaby  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:50:18am

G-d bless the IDF. I have such respect and admiration for those soldiers.

assuming it's true, what exactly would make the weapons 'contraband'?

First, the final word on weapons in the the territories is the Israeli gov't. However, the Oslo agreement does provide for certain weaponry to be supplied to the PA, primarily light weapons to be used by the PA security forces. Heavy artilary is prohibited along with some light artilary such as mortars.

Whether or not these weapons are considered contrabad, would depend on two important points:

1) Where the weapons were heading (to the PA or to terrorist organizations; and

2) What type of weapons they are (AK-47's and ammo or mortars)

The answer to these two questions will determine whether this is contraband or not.

33 el Barto  Wed, May 21, 2003 10:57:43am

What weapons? There are no weapons here. There not any weapons within a hundred miles. Any weapons that may be found are obviously planted by the zionist entity to enflame the sensibilities of all peace loving palestinians.
If you do not at once retract these lies will will begin to seeth.

assuming it's true, what exactly would make the weapons 'contraband'?

...Under the Oslo agreement.....the ISraelis allowed Arafat to return, to allow self gov't to the Arabs and prepare for ststehood...

the PA were supposed to impose law and order on areas under their administration, similar to all states...

additionally, the PA security forces were armed BY ISRAEL for this task...and the PA agreed that certain weapons would not be allowed....

[Link: www.washingtoninstitute.org...]

The PSS today is a cumbersome, multifaceted security apparatus consisting of no fewer than twelve different services; the Oslo II agreement, however, allowed only six services. The proliferation of the units as well as the difficulty in defining their exact responsibilities often cause their jurisdictions to overlap, in turn leading to street clashes, confusion, and inefficient work. The commanders of the different branches are often at odds with each other. Practicing the strategy of divide and rule, Yasir Arafat, the commander in chief of all the security forces, has built his security establishment in such a way that only he can arbitrate among the different forces. This system of command ensures that none of the security forces becomes powerful enough to pose a threat to his leadership.

There is a discrepancy between the number of PSS officers the PA is believed to have, the number it is allowed to have according to the Oslo II agreement, and the official number confirmed by the Palestinians. The PA forwarded to the Israelis a payroll of only 18,600 named officers (it did not want to name the others, as Oslo gives Israel the right to veto PSS candidates), but Oslo allows the PSS to have up to 30,000 officers; many Israelis assert the real number, however, is well over 40,000. If true, that makes the PA the most heavily policed territory in the world, with the outstanding ratio of one officer for every fifty residents. (By comparison, the U.S. ratio is 1:400.)

...........additionally, Ireland.....if you lean to spell google...and put that into your browser....you might find lots of information to help clarify your ;view;

35 Dom  Wed, May 21, 2003 11:04:05am

"We need these for when Israel counterattacks. Much better than stones, oh yes..."

I expect for them to find Saddam's arsenal en-route to Hizballah or Jihad Islami or the PA.

The snarky one wasn't actually looking for an answer. It's a little devious that one, likes to come in here and bore us to death, so be alert! Almost happened to me once when I let my guard down for a minute. Careful.

Major PLO violations of the Oslo Accords
The following list delineates 10 of the most egregious PLO violations of the Oslo Accords. The list is neither comprehensive nor exhaustive; rather, its focus is on infractions Israel deems most serious.

It depends whose ship it was. If it was an Al Qaeda ship, they have a fleet of ships, there could be some "intense" interrogations underway. Israel won't say anything until they find out the whole story.

43 Dom  Wed, May 21, 2003 4:18:52pm

Abbas being honest. Wonder why (Tehran Times):

New Palestinian PM Says Arafat Is Still in Charge

CAIRO -- New Palestinian Prime Minister Mahmoud Abbas said President Yasser Arafat remained in charge despite a U.S. and Israeli refusal to deal with him, and said his stamp of approval should precede any political action.
"Arafat is at the top of the (Palestinian) Authority. He's the man to whom we refer, regardless of the American or Israeli view of him," Abbas, also known as Abu Mazen, said in an interview with Egypt's semi-official Al-Mussawar weekly.
"For us, Abu Ammar is the president elected by the Palestinian people and he is the chairman of the whole Palestinian Authority. We do not do anything without his approval," Abbas said, referring to Arafat by his nom de guerre…."I cannot imagine how can there be different treatments for me and for Abu Ammar,"

44 its jake  Wed, May 21, 2003 4:49:44pm

"Stop killing Jews? Ok, I'll talk to the fuhrer about that right away." - Abu Mazen

These guys to represent Palestinians? HOW CAN ANYONE TAKE THEM SERIOUSLY? Arafat (Fatah, PLO, Al Aqsa Brigades etc), a bin Laden's bin Laden and his lackey, Abu, want land! So WE DREW THEM A MAP!

46 Caton  Wed, May 21, 2003 5:03:35pm

I said it before, I'll say it again: we need the Lohamei Herut Israel back.

47 yar  Wed, May 21, 2003 7:05:57pm
final pothole on the roadmap to peace.

You can't be serious, right? Arafat already safely got past the Karin-A discovery. He'll sail smoothly through this one, too. Even if the old murderer finally lost it, appeared on Pali TV and flashed everyone while shouting "Death to Israel! Allah's blessings on (insert latest splodeydope)!" the "roadmap" would still be hailed as a legitimate plan.

I don't even want to think about what would constitute a true pothole.

Remember, a non-negligible portion of Americans don't even believe 9/11 is justification for our defending ourselves.

48 Outsider  Wed, May 21, 2003 8:52:09pm

Almost nothing but the basic rumor on Israeli forums.
It's semi-official that something BIG happened and is not disclosed to the public according to a court order.

49 Big Dan  Wed, May 21, 2003 9:25:10pm

Aw, c'mon, that shipment of Pali weapons was from before. It's just stuff that was on backorder. We really don't want it now. Arafat and his puppet just said so.

And since the weapon restocking fee is so high, we couldn't get an RMA so we have to keep it. And so we might as well use it to kill innocent children, just to get our blood-money's worth.

[/sarcasm]

50 Gil Shterzer  Wed, May 21, 2003 11:01:53pm

According to my check a shipment of weapons was caught but it is not as big as the Karine-A, more like the size of weapons that was caught on the smaller Santorini boat.

And as Outsider wrote it is still disclosed to the public under a court order.

51 Caton  Wed, May 21, 2003 11:22:04pm

#50 Gil Shterzer

Large shipment of weapons, but not as large as the Karine-A. This explains why the "Karine-A" bit was only on the first SMS.

How long do you think before the gag order is lifted?

52 Gil Shterzer  Thu, May 22, 2003 3:52:18am

15:39 Israel time: Arabic TV station Al-Arbia: Israel Navy arrested Hezbollah man Wednesday on boat headed from Lebanon to Gaza (Haaretz)

53 Gil Shterzer  Thu, May 22, 2003 4:16:07am

Gag order lifted:

Israeli naval commando seized a boat headed from Lebanon to Gaza sent so it seems by Hizbullah. A few tones of weapons were on it, about the same as the Santorini was carrying, less than the 50 tons of the Karin A.

54 Morgan  Thu, May 22, 2003 5:13:09am

The Jeruslam Post has a report now.

55 Dirk Diggler  Thu, May 22, 2003 5:14:29am

The ship seizure story has been confimed here:

Arms laden ship seized of the Lebanese Coast

56 Outsider  Thu, May 22, 2003 5:26:19am

The "Abu-Hasan" ship contained:

1 HizbAllah terrorist, 7 sailors,
large amounts of explosives, detonators,
suicide belts, chemicals for explosives making,
as well as magnetic media & documents (probably for warfare techniques, recepies for explosives, perhaps even intelligence & potential targets data).

It sailed from Egypt on the 15th to Lebanon, loaded the cargo there and then sailed twards Gaza.

On the one hand this is good because they were detected and siezed (contrary to a "Karine B" which was sunk at sea) when the captured start "singing" to the Shin Bet this will bolster our security.
On the other hand, makes you wonder how many such ships managed to go through? The Israeli navy is pitifully tiny and can only do so much.

57 Outsider  Thu, May 22, 2003 5:27:59am

#56 - continued

Make that a senior HizbAllah terrorist.
